  • Top 1000 Albums (1970-2009) - Part I (2000-2009)

    Nov 23 2009, 12h42 por Funkafonik

Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the best Albums that have been released in the last 40+ years.

I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.

I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year; an ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually been released on official releases. The final result will be a Top 1000 for Official Albums, and Top ~250 for Live/EP albums.

These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:

Total Sum of each Album's Song's (running time X playcount)
    DIVIDED BY
    Album's Total Running Time

Thanks to MediaMonkey and its amazing scripting abilities, that formula gives an Album's REAL playcount, taking into consideration every song's lenght & playcount in relation to the overall album's lenght and # of songs on it.
You'll see the result (# of times I've really listened to an album since 2005) besides each, along with my 10* Rating. (x/x)
Besides each Year, you get the Total of all Albums' Playcounts and the average of all Albums' Ratings. (x / %)

Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.

    (**) are the complete albums I was into at that time;
    (*) are albums that contained only a few song(s) I was into or listened to at that time;
and those without (*) are albums I discovered years later.

  • My top 10 (favorite) songs/bands ever

    Set 13 2009, 20h48 por dtismajesty

In this journal - I will list my top 10 most favorite songs (excluding seconds from an artist already used)
What you should take from it - I hope you can check out some of this great music and find something you like =)

    Honorable mentions
    Porcupine Tree - Stars Die
    Anathema - Inner Silence
Lunatic Soul - The New Beginning
    Riverside - The Same River
    Shadow Gallery - Colors
    Tori Amos - Winter

    10.Quidam - TocarDifferent
Quidam is one of my favorite bands. They are completely unique and innovative, and their music is so beautiful. Different is not a typical song from them, it is a mere 3-something minutes long, and there are maybe 6 vocal verses. It does not drag at all, and due to its light and accesible nature it glides across the listeners ears.

    9.Marillion - TocarEaster
Marillion is a band with quite a reputation for being one of the few to successfully fuse Pop and Prog effortlessly. However, Easter does not fit perfectly into either. In this way it is very unique in it's melodies, containing Celtic and Irish overtone (Hogarth dedicated it to Ireland) Although Marillion are not the most innovative of bands, they have definately created a unique gem with Easter.

    8.Dream Theater - Another Day
I have mixed feelings regarding the prog metal veterans Dream Theater. I am not a metal fan (DT might be the only band labeled as such on this list) but I absolutely love JLB's vocals, and some of their earlier work has a really genuine quality. However, this is often swallowed up by their need to still fall within the realms of "Prog metal" My favorite Dream Theater song was a toss up between many different songs, including The Spirit Carries On, Learning to Live, Solitary Shell, and many more, but Labrie's vocal performance on Another Day and the powerful lyrics and meaning put it above the rest.

7.Shpongle - TocarOnce Upon the Sea of Blissful Awareness
Shpongle simply cannot be classified into any genre less broad than "music." and "Shponglularity" I do not want to try and explain what they sound like. Every track that they make is exellent, but only this song features the angelic voice of Abigail Gordon. This song is quite literal, as in your mind your are drifting through a sea of bliss yet you are aware of the intricacy of what you..... Damn, there I go again. well... moving on....

    6. No-Man - Photographs in Black and White
No-Man may have started out as an outlet for Steven Wilson's many creative ideas, but it has evolved in more ways than I can describe. Bowess's lyrics and singing lend themselves perfectly to the music. Together We're stranger is one of my favorite albums of all time, and it's 10 minute centerpiece Photographs in Black and White is it's crown jewel, a swelling and melancholic piece, simple but beautiful.

    5. Chroma Key - TocarUndertow
Chroma Key is the musical project of just about the most innovative keyboardist there is, Kevin Moore. His ambient tendancies and layed back vocal style could appeal to anyone who is willing to give it time. Undertow features the incredible drumming of Mark Zonder of Fates Warning.

    "There's a song that I'd rather forget
but I don't think I've shaken it yet
As soon as I do, I'm gonna write us another one"

    4.Gazpacho - TocarMassive Illusion
Gazpacho is almost as difficult to describe as Shpongle, so I will just say... Night is one of the best albums ever made, and Massive Illusion is the best song on it.

3.Pineapple Thief - Start Your Descent
Pineapple Thief is the perfect cross of Prog and Pop, which borders on Indie and Alternative. Start your descent is an absolutely moving, melancholic and longing ballad, simply beautiful. It is one of their more pop oriented tracks (some of their others clock in at over 27 minutes) but it has a genuine undertone that cannot be missed.

2.Pain of Salvation - Never Learn to Fly
Wow, where do I start with Pain of Salvation? Polyrhythems and ridiculous technical skill? My favorite vocalist ever? Incredibly intricate writing? No, their lyrics are their most definitave quality. (Gildenlows incredibly diverse vocals is a close second) and Never Learn to Fly perfectly blends all of these elements, with beautifully written vocal arrangements and soul-wrenching lyrics. It's too bad this was only a bonus track from one of their albums.

1.Dare - The Calm Before the Storm
I remember hearing Dare's single Abandon on the radio so long ago. It was a relatively forgettable AOR song, but the singer and the lyrics had a quality unheard of for its time. Dare experienced short-lived mainstream success before fading into the back-catalogs of hard rock. After a long absence from the music scene, a much more matured Darren Wharton released Calm Before the Storm. This album was a huge leap forward, from strong pop material to truly heartfelt music. Celtic overtones are slightly evident (ones that would later become a keystone in their sound) and their recent album Beneath The Shining Water is stronger as a whole, The Calm Before the Storm is simply one of the most emotional songs ever made. It is like a key to feelings in your soul that you can not describe, because music today simple isn't made for that reason. The vocals absolutely soar above the incredibly well thought out instrumentation that blends together beautifully. Hearing this song was the most incredible musical experience of my life. I don't know what else to say. Except that Dare is coming out with a new album "Arc of the Dawn" that I can't wait to hear.

I hope you enjoy the music listed here half as much as I did.

  • Review: OSI - Blood

    Jun 14 2009, 20h16 por strwrngpurple

While scouring the net for new music, something I do from time to time, I came across OSI. Reading up on them, they sounded like they had some potential. A project formed by Jim Matheos of Fates Warning and Kevin Moore of Chroma Key & Dream Theater. The project has been focused on electronic music for the most part, but this release has introduced quite a bit of heavy guitar. This sounded like something that would appeal to me. There are a handful or artists that are masters at mixing electronic and heavy guitars (see Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, mid-90's Fear Factory and even Linkin Park) and when it's done well it sounds so good to me.

With that in mind I came in with high expectations even though I had never heard them. What I got was a mixed bag of disappointment and excitement. The album starts off with a track that has some of the most generic nu-metal guitars I have ever heard. This was the disappointing part for me. Whenever the heavier guitars kick in on this disc it usually ends up ruining whatever good had been done previously within that track. One exception is Microburst Alert which is an instrumental that builds up wonderfully with a repetitive electronic drum loop that ends in a lovely clash of hard guitars and the backing electronics.

The excitement, for me, came in the tracks that were full on electronic or the tracks that used the guitar as more of an effect. The best track here, Radiologue, is nothing but a wonderfully laid back synth and an excellent vocal performance from Kevin Moore. I have read reviews on this that complain about Moore being too "laid back", but I think that's the point. He isn't trying to overpower the music underneath him, he is trying to fit in with it and does a really good job. Another fantastic track is Stockholm which is a track that does use the guitar as more of a backing effect than a cheesy nu-metal rip off.

This disc is a great mix of agressive and laid back. It never really seems to try too hard. They stay in the zone they are comfotable with and it works. This really could appeal to a lot of people. There are parts of things like Assemblage 23 and even some Skinny Puppy but never coming across as hard as either one of those artists do. I hope the guitars grow on me through repeated listens, because the programming and vocals here are excellent. I can't call this a must listen, but for people who like a little guitar with a lot of darker electronic elements should check this out.

    Jul 4 2008, 2h21 por lappado

    1. How did you get into 29?
Julee Cruise: Why, through Twin Peaks of course!

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Clive Carroll: Don't remember. I saw him live the first time I heard him, and I hardly ever remember set lists and stuff like that.

    3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Hellbillies: I have four of their albums on CD, namely 'Lakafant', 'Liv e' Laga', 'CoolTur' and 'Spissrotgang'.

    4. What is your favorite song by 15?
Eels: No one song really stands out as a favourite, but if I had to pick one I would go for 'TocarRailroad Man'.

    5. What is your favorite song by 5?
Steely Dan: TocarMy Old School has got everything that the Dan is all about. Coolness, smugness, clever lyrics and great musicianship. Hands down my favourite.

    6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
George Harrison: Any Road - the opening track from his last album 'Brainwashed' - always puts a smile on my face.

    7. What is your favorite song by 10?
Massive Attack: TocarGroup Four, no question about it. This song depresses me, in a good way. Is that even possible?

    8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
BigBang: Visiting their studio in Oslo was a blast. :)

    9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Matt Uelmen: Nope, at least not happy in the traditional sense. Diablo/Diablo 2 are not very happy games, but playing them made me happy, I guess.

    10. How many times have you seen 25 live?
    Sting: Once.

    11. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Bob Dylan: I have no idea. But probably Mr. Tambourine Man or Blowin' In The Wind.

    12. What is your favorite album by 11?
Leonard Cohen: As much as I love his old stuff, I would have to say his latest album, 'Dear Heather'. It just has a nice and timeless quality to it, both lyric- and music wise.

    13. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Tommy Emmanuel: The one man band, Tommy Emmanuel himself of course! Or I could say his bass player, mr Tom Thumb. ;)

    14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Henry Mancini: Nope. That would have been difficult, seeing he was mainly a composer/arranger/conductor.

    15. What is a good memory involving 27?
Mark Knopfler & Emmylou Harris: Hard to say, given the short lived nature of this duo. Had I seen their show in Oslo in 2006, it would probably have made the list.

    16. What is your favorite song by 16?
Pink Floyd: I can't possibly limit myself to one track, so I say the whole closing medley from 'Dark Side Of The Moon', from 'Us and Them' to 'Eclipse'. The best closing tracks of any album to date.

    17. What is your favorite album by 18?
Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed: 'Me and Chet' from 1975 perfectly captures the wildness of the Alabama Wild Man Jerry Reed and the super chops of the Country Gentleman Chet Atkins.

    18. What is your favorite song by 21?
Tord Gustavsen Trio: Probably 'Where Breathing Starts'. Oh the melancholy.

    19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
Chet Atkins: Quite possibly TocarYakety Axe.

    20. What is your favorite album by 2?
Mark Knopfler: Ooh.. Tough one, they're all so good. But having to pick one, I must go with 'Sailing To Philadelphia', if so just for its amazing title track.

    21. What is you favorite song by 3?
The Beatles: Another tough one. I've always had a special affection for 'Carry That Weight' from 'Abbey Road'. It's a short but sweet tune.

    22. What is you favorite song by 8?
Angelo Badalamenti: 'Fire Walk With Me'. This song just takes me to a dark dark place. And I like it there.

    23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
Paul McCartney: Sadly, none. But I hope I will be able to one day.

    24. What is the worst song by 12?
Hellbillies: Pretty much any song from their first album, except 'Aksjon på Ål'. 'Kule knallert-Kari' is also a de-favourite.

    25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
Chroma Key: That would be 'TocarColorblind', the first song off of CK's first album - 'Dead Air For Radios'.

    26. What is you favorite album by 7?
James Taylor: As with Cohen, I love his old stuff, but his 2002 effort - 'October Road' - really soothes me in a different way.

    27. What is your favorite song by 24?
Chet Atkins & Tommy Emmanuel: That would be 'Tiptoe Through the Bluegrass'. A very nice and cheerful tune. :)

    28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Gerry Mulligan: His take on Chopin's 'TocarPrelude In E Minor' makes me smile.

    29. What is your favorite album by 4?
Dire Straits: This varies from time to time, but generally I tend to like 'Communique' a tad better than the rest.

    30. How many albums do you own by 42?
Stevie Ray Vaughan: 13. No, I'm not going to list them.
