2005, US singer-songwriter Chris Whitley died of lung cancer aged 45. Whitley earned critical success with his 1991 album ‘Living with the Law’ and toured with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.

1995, US Soul singer Junior Walker died. (1966 US & UK Top 20 single 'How Sweet It Is.' 1969 US No.4 single 'What Does It Take, To Win Your Love').

1994, Tommy Boyce, singer-songwriter, committed suicide. (1968 US No. 8 single with Bobby Hart, 'I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite', also wrote 'Last Train To Clarksville', 'I'm Not Your Stepping Stone' and 'Scooby- Doo Where Are You.' Sold over 40m records.

1992, US Country singer Roy Acuff died aged 89. In 1962 he was the first living artist elected to the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

1985, Joe Turner, US blues songwriter died. Wrote 'Shake Ratle and Roll', 'Sweet Sixteen.'

1983, Tom Evans from Badfinger committed suicide by hanging himself. Evans co-wrote 'Without You' a hit for Harry Nilson and Mariah Carey.

1956, sheet metal worker Louis Balint was arrested after punching Elvis Presley at a Hotel in Toledo. Balint claimed that his wife's love for Elvis had caused his marriage to break up. He was fined $19.60 but ended up being jailed because he was unable to pay the fine.

1954, Born on this day, Bruce Hornsby, keyboards, vocals, The Range, (1986 US No.1 & UK No.15 single 'The Way It Is').

1899, The world's first jukebox was installed at San Francisco's' Palais Royal Hotel.

It would seem like the boys at No Depression are getting bored, so they decided to take a trip back to their youth--trying to stick square pegs in round holes. Except today they try to call it “art”. This month Grant Alden addresses the topic head on, but it sounds to me more like excuses you gave the teacher when you got caught with your Archies comic inside your Social Studies text book.

RAP goes the ruler across your desk. C’mon, Grant, we don’t need another glam rag. We buy/subscribe to ND ‘cause we like the skinny on Roots music, Americana, alt.country whatever that is. While that nebulous genre varies greatly, don’t stick sausage in my sandwich and try to sell it as prime rib.

I don't beat up on ND 'cause I don't like it. No Depression captures the music I love like no other. And we fight for the ones we love. Yea, I know "If you love something, set it free." Right, whatever, fly back home to alt.country after you've seen Nashvegas, amigos.

2005, US singer songwriter Chris Whitley died of lung cancer aged 45. Whitley earned critical success with his 1991 album ‘Living with the Law’ and toured with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty.

1994, Tommy Boyce, singer, songwriter, committed suicide. (1968 US No. 8 single with Bobby Hart, 'I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite', also wrote 'Last Train To Clarksville', 'I'm Not Your Stepping Stone' and 'Scooby- Doo Where Are You.' Sold over 40m records.

1992, US Country singer Roy Acuff died aged 89. In 1962 he was the first living artist elected to the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

1985, Joe Turner, US blues songwriter died. Wrote 'Shake Ratle and Roll', 'Sweet Sixteen.'

1983, Tom Evans from Badfinger committed suicide by hanging himself. Evans co-wrote 'Without You' a hit for Harry Nilson and Mariah Carey.

1975, Queen started a nine-week run at No.1 in the UK with 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' The promotional video that accompanied the song is generally acknowledged as being the first pop video and only cost £5,000 to produce.

1974, Elton John started an 11-week run at No.1 on the UK chart with his 'Greatest Hits', album. It also enjoyed a 10 week run as the US No.1

1974, One hit wonder Billy Swan started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'I Can Help', it made No.6 in the UK.

1956, sheet metal worker Louis Balint was arrested after punching Elvis Presley at a Hotel in Toledo. Balint claimed that his wife's love for Elvis had caused his marriage to break up. He was fined $19.60 but ended up being jailed because he was unable to pay the fine.

1954, Born on this day, Bruce Hornsby, keyboards, vocals, The Range, (1986 US No.1 & UK No.15 single 'The Way It Is').

If I were to get stranded on some deserted island alone with only 5 CDs (you know, a really highly likely situation)... these would be the ones I'd choose, in no particular order...

Chris Whitley - 'Living With The Law' - The man was a musical genius. Over the course of his career he reinvented himself in so many different ways that it is truly nothing short of amazing. One listen to this and then one listen to his newer material, like 'Rocket House', for example, truly exemplifies the musical diversity that Whitley had. This album was his first big break, back when he had a major label deal with Sony in the early 90's, and is without a doubt one of the finest musical masterpieces this world has ever witnessed. Perfect.

Butch Walker - 'Left Of Self-Centered' - Butch is... well... Butch. There's no other way to describe him. He's one of a kind. He's such a workaholic on all of the albums that he produces that he hardly gets the credit he deserves for his own solo work, which is really unfair. This is one of the best pop-rock records ever, with every song written straight from the heart, with catchy hooks and outstanding riffs. I dare you not to like this CD.

Averi - 'Drawn To Revolving Doors' - Had Chad Perrone stuck around in Averi past this album, they might be on their way to stardom right now. However, he unfortunately left the band following this album. Don't let that take away from this album though, as it's one of the best you'll ever hear. Perrone's songwriting ability is showcased as he pours out his entire heart on confession-like songs such as "This Time", "Mouth Full Of Sand", and "Everything With You". Truly a must have for any fan of acoustic/alt/rock type stuff.

Matthew Good Band - 'Underdogs' - Canada's super-band of the 90's, The Matthew Good Band lived the rock star life fast, hard, and crazy. They finally broke up in 2001, and Good has been releasing solo work ever since, but none of it has ever reached the level that he and his band found on this 1997 masterpiece. Songs like "Apparitions" and "Middle Class Gangsters" are just plain classics... I've been listening to this one for almost ten years now and I'm still not sick of it one bit.

Anberlin - 'Never Take Friendship Personal' - One of the best new artists to emerge from the Christian rock scene in recent memory, Anberlin capture listeners with catchy hooks and a polished sound courtesy of super-producer Aaron Sprinkle. I almost hesitated to include it on this list because it was released only little over a year ago, so I wasn't sure if I could really tell if it has the longevity of the rest of these albums, but then I listened to it again... And I'm left without a doubt, I will still be listening to this one YEARS from now as well. If for some odd reason you don't know who these guys are, do yourself a favor and buy this CD.
