  • Proposal: Never Say Dinosaur II

    Set 18 2009, 14h54 por TulsaMJ

A friend asked me on Facebook what Petra songs I'd like to hear covers of. There was a cover album of Petra songs many years ago called Never Say Dinosaur: A Tribute to Petra... what would I put on a Never Say Dinosaur II in 2009? Hmm. Well, let's brainstorm here:

Family Force 5 - they could bring a really fun vibe to Get Back to the Bible from Petra
Ashley Cleveland - a mother's touch for Mary's Song from Washes Whiter Than
Pillar - would ROCK It Is Finished from Beat the System
Stellar Kart - could do an energetic take on TocarWhole World from Back To The Street
Newsboys - would do a great job on Ready, Willing, and Able from Unseen Power
tobyMac - could fill in some details on Sally (a song about a Christian girl who loses her way) from Come & Join Us
Thousand Foot Krutch - They could totally pound it on Underneath the Blood from Wake-Up Call
Skillet - could bring some really raw heart to In the Likeness of You from Unseen Power (or could sear our eyebrows off on Mine Field from On Fire!)
Chris Tomlin - could make us fall back in love with Love from Beyond Belief
Britt Nicole - could bring some feminine enthusiasm to I Love the Lord from Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out
Steven Curtis Chapman - after what his family has been through recently, I would cry my eyes out if I heard him sing TocarGrave Robber from Not Of This World
Superchick - more girl energy for Heart of a Hero from No Doubt

Wouldn't it be cool to showcase some of the underappreciated gems from the Petra catalog? :)

  • Top 10 Worshiplike Songs.

    Mai 30 2009, 22h03 por mapleleaf10

There are many worship songs out there nowadays. You can find "worship" in any genre. Whereas I don't like limiting worship to just the songs you sing in church Sunday morning, some songs like that are just really good. You can fully worship God while rocking out to the hardest Christian Rock there is out there. However, going under the cliche of "worship", these are my top 10. Not in any certain order, though!

    1. Jesus Paid It All by Kristian Stanfill
This is the classic hymn "Jesus Paid It All." However, it adds a refrain that I find amazing: "Oh praise the one who paid my debt / and raised this life up from the dead.

    2. TocarWhen The Tears Fall by Tim Hughes
These one has been covered by artists such as The Newsboys, and is such a beautiful song. "When hope is lost, I'll call you Saviour. When pain surrounds, I'll call you Healer."

    3. My Jesus I Love Thee by Go Fish
This has been my favorite hymn for awhile. This is a good version of it. I'm a fan of Go Fish in general. They give the song a fresh feel without updating it too much.

    4. TocarThe Stand by Hillsong United
In general, I'm not a Hillsong fan. This is one of the few songs by HIllsong though that I do like. It is just an all around amazing song. Good lyrics, good meter, et al.

    5. TocarIn Christ Alone by The Newsboys
Many artists have covered this song. Many. This one is one of the most well-known, and in my opinion, best. This song sums up the gospel so well and is quite doctrinally sound. Good stuff.

    6. TocarAmazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) by Chris Tomlin
Amazing Grace is one of the most well-known hymns ever. Not only does Tomlin add lesser-known verses to this version ("The Earth shall soon dissolve like snow..") but he adds a powerful chorus to it.

    7. How Deep the Father's Love for Us by Skillet
I realize that many artists have covered this song. This is my favorite. I love Skillet's entire Ardent Worship album but this track stands out. The words itself are powerful (But this I know with all my heart / his wounds have paid my ransom) and the tune is simple yet moving. There are other good versions out there, but this song alone is why I purchased the album.

    8. Sweetly Broken by Jeremy Riddle
I just learned this song this year in chapel. It quickly became a new favorite. It has good lyrics and doesn't have an overly difficult tune to sing.

    9. TocarAwesome God by Rich Mullins
Whatever happened to this song? We sung it all the time in High School but now I can't remember the last time it was sung in a church! It always did drive me bonkers when we would never sing the verses. They are the best part of the song! Rich Mullins by no means regarded this as one of his better songs (check out some of his other stuff if you haven't. Songs has many of my favorite songs by him on it) Anyway, I adore this song, it goes to prove that even the simplest of songs can have a profound impact.

    10. Days of Elijah by don marsh
Another one we don't sing very often anymore! I do like it though. It's catchy, gets stuck in my head, and focuses on Old Testament things, whereas many modern worship songs seem to dwell on the New Testament.

That's it for Angelique's Top 10 Worship Songs. Maybe my next blog will be Angelique's Top 10 Most Hated Worship Songs?

  • its been awhile..

    Jan 11 2009, 3h15 por shnickyfan

so my last journal entry was in aug 06, aka the summer before university.
so clearly, some of my music selections have changed, and some hasnt!

    still the same:
Westlife for one. the slow sappy stuff with no swearing, and G rated lyrics. its good to know that there's still secular music out there that isnt full of profanity. plus Shane's got amazing vocals. cant go wrong there!
plenty of other late 90s and early 00s music is still on my playlist. its what i 'grew up' with so i dont think i'll ever get tired of it, even if many of hte bands have broken up already. such as S Club 7, Blue, Atomic Kitten, 5ive, McFly (well, they're still around and i like their new stuff too!), Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees.
christian stuff, i still listen to Hillsong and Hillsong United but not as much. i guess Hillsong United was more geared towards youth, as in high schoolers? so i prefer Hillsong stuff now. haha... and i've always listened to Chris Tomlin and still do!

'new' music (well, to my library at least):
When Home first came out, thats the only song i liked. but ive learnt to appreciate the whole rat pack era and stuff thats a tad bit more jazzy so Michael Buble's one of my favourites now. and you cant forget about Jason Mraz either! really loved his latest album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things. sadly, ive missed 2 opportunities to see him. or rather, i didnt really make the effort to go =P
so entering university, i was invited to attend the Passion 2007 conference with a few friends. and that really broadened up worship music for me. before the conference, i knew maybe most of Tomlin's songs, a few songs here and there by the other 3 main Passion worship leaders (David Crowder Band, Charile Hall, Matt Redman, and i had heard of a few others such as Shane & Shane, Steve Fee, Christy Nockels/Watermark, Tim Hughes, Kristian Stanfill, etc
another new discovery is Lincoln Brewster. c'mon.. a worship leader with a mohawk and has crazy skills on the electric guitar. if you're ever in the car for a really long time (aka road trip, travelling back and forth from home/school towns, etc), stick in a Brewster CD. catchy riffs, catchy beats, catchy melody, great lyrics, yeah!

obviously i couldnt list out every single artist i listen to, but this is the general gist of it.
oh, and i got an iphone! so once i figure out how to scrobble that... BOOYEAH! :D

  • my mp3-player non-scrobblings, pt. 4

    Dez 19 2008, 11h34 por spikemobile

as those who follow, may see, i'm not the one who often changes music in his m3-player. in fact once it's in there, it stays there for a long long time, hence the non-scrobbling thing.. it's a shame it never gets scrobbled in the amounts it is played here (it woulda made the tops).

    * A Plea For Purging!!! what can i say about these guys? they're redefining metalcore, imho. a lot of good guitars, very eclectic, very fast (without being overbearing).. A Critique of Mind and Thought is excellent! very hard to pick a track that doesn't stand out, they all do.. perhaps TocarSlaying of the Serpentine Dragon is THA track! but then again, so are other tracks.. good! good! good!

    * For Today's Ekklesia is a very tight album with no skip-tracks. tight! tight! tight! breakdowns, beautiful riffs, melodic interludes, good vocals - (not so generic) metalcore at its finest. TocarRedemption is awesome! and so are TocarReady For the Fight and TocarA Higher Standard!

    * Lengsel's sophomore record (The Kiss The Hope) is more diverse than their first installment (Solace).. much more experimenatation took place on this record. An Anonymous Phone-Call and a Dead Line is an eerie but good introduction to what awaits you. a great incorporation of russian-bible-reading by a fairy-talish female voice. heavy and awesome!

    * no matter how hard i tried, i couldn't rid my player of Matisyahu's No Place To Be EP. + i added the masterpiece TocarKing Without a Crown to the mix. mati is da bomb!

    * aching raw guitar-driven dark horse artist Neon Horse from Tooth & Nail. all tracks are equally skilled, equally aching, equally rawky, equally good! Mark Salomon's voice and lyrics (of Stavesacre's fame) makes it an unforgettable experience! TocarCuckoo!, TocarSpeed Killz, TocarI Know - I Just Don't Care pave the way for the rest of the album to come...

    * sludgy post-metalcore orchestra from germany The Ocean give you run for your money with their double-disc Precambrian. if you haven't gotten it yet, you should. it's one of those atmospheric, heavy, pounding records that you wish you've recorded! the songs flow from one into another, so it's really hard to pinpoint which song's which. but i've got my favorite - TocarTonian. i get psyched every time i listen to it!

    * and again, Passion's favorites from Charlie Hall (We Are Yours, TocarMarvelous Light, TocarWalk The World, TocarYou Are God), Chris Tomlin (TocarGod Of This City, TocarHow Great Is Our God, TocarSing, Sing, Sing, Your Grace Is Enough, etc.) and Matt Redman (TocarBlessed Be Your Name, TocarYou Never Let Go, TocarGod Of Our Yesterdays), with two sermons from Louie Giglio included. especially after this encounter with Passion firsthand, these songs and the passion behind them are so much more vivid, when i listen to these songs..

    * a good overall album from Pillar. For The Love Of The Game is solid, much better than Where Do We Go From Here (or maybe i just didn't get that one), imho. the growth is obvious. TocarFor The Love Of The Game starts things off and gives the album its strong direction, TocarSmiling Down slows things down a bit, and TocarForever Starts Now is an awesome conclusion for an overall good modern hard rock album!

    * Relient K's MMHMM rocks like only Relient K can! TocarBe My Escape is worshipful and dependence-triggering! TocarI So Hate Consequences is gut-wretching and thought provoking. TocarWho I Am Hates Who I've Been should be enjoyed on account of its title alone, let alone the music and lyrics, which are nothing short of excellent (which is exacrtly what you come to expect from Relient K. TocarMy Girl's Ex-Boyfriend has become so much truer now that i've got my significant other! a great grat album indeed!

    * what can one say about a young artist like Second Thief. these guys know how to rip, that's for sure. they've got this full-blown mix of metal, hardcore, nu-metal, deathcore.. you can hear they're young, but they're great nonetheless! loved them and their first and so far the only record, as far as i know, Threshold.. a few tracks that really stood out for me - TocarSacrifice, TocarJasper Fire, TocarRosmarus... will see what their second album will look like. they do have the potential!

    * it's the Seventh Star!!! yeah, their two albums - Brood of Vipers and The Undisputed Truth are unparalleled, be it the lyrics or the angst and passion of the music! it's all there! after seeing these guys back in the summer, these two albums with their hammering hits - among which are TocarBrood of Vipers, The 96th Thesis and crowd-favorite TocarResistance to Resistance (off of BoV), and TocarThe Undisputed Truth, TocarIsaiah Six, TocarFor All The Saints, TocarI Versus I (off of UT) - have been playing over and over again in my ears! too bad that summer show was their last...

    * what can i say about The Almost? Southern Weather is an overall enjoyable treat with honest lyrics (sometimes even too honest) and radio-friendly passionate music. TocarDirty And Left Out was on a repeat button for quite some time! (there's something reminiscent about this song; it kinda reminds be of the passion and the pain and the grace of Underoath's TocarSome Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape) other highlights are TocarAmazing, Because It Is, TocarSay This Sooner and TocarSouthern Weather. aaron is great!

    * the same story as with Matisyahu's EP is with The Famine's 3-song demo. can't get enough! although their full length the raven and the reaping is out (which i by the way love), these three songs, especially - yeah! yeah! yeah! - Fading Glory. the Embodyment's line-up still rips my chest apart and makes my heart pound faster!

    * and of course the-can't-get-enough-worship from The Glorious Unseen. you can't describe it, you just have to listen to it. take the starters - TocarHear Our Prayers and TocarForever Holy.. the rest is just as brilliant, just as worshipful and just as inspiring!

    * an interesting FACEDOWN RECORDS fit Thieves and Liars has really got what it takes. their debut When Dreams Become Reality is a real treat for all the classic hard rock sound with a tinge of psychodelia. from hard-hitting Road To Nowhere to more laid-back and sorrowful Forgotten truly epic!

    * my hxc-loving friends from ukraine Опозиція with their second (and unfortunately last) record Один iз Тисяч.. if you love xLooking Forwardx, Stretch Arm Strong, old Comeback Kid, you'll also love this!!!

    until the next installment.. c-ya!

ps: hmm, i wonder if anybody reads it at all.. guess not, but oh well..
