  • One album for each year I've been alive.

    Dez 19 2009, 21h56 por Spark_and_Spark

I hate seeing all these little games (or 'memes' as people call them) in the Related Journals section, since these games/quizzes seem to be the only thing people use the Last.fm journal for! But, here I am, falling in line.

I thought this one was quite cool, so here I go.

(1991) Loveless – My Bloody Valentine
Nice way to start off. I'm sure there's nothing new to say about this album. If you've never heard it, go listen to it now. And listen to it loud. It's gorgeous.

Other honourable mentions for '91 would be P・O・P by THE MAD CAPSULE MARKET'S (hard, fast punk rock) and The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest (classic hip hop, with jazz.)

    (1992) Automatic for the People – R.E.M.
Very slow and melancholic and kinda depressing. It's, of course, one of the best albums I've heard. TocarSweetness Follows is one of my favourite songs. It's so good.

カプセル・スープ ("Capsule Soup") by THE MAD CAPSULE MARKET'S is another great CD from '92.

(1993) Midnight Marauders – A Tribe Called Quest
One of the best hip-hop albums ever, for sure. The Tribe know what they're doing.

Recipe for Hate by Bad Religion is another very, very good album from '93. And of course Björk's Debut.

(1994) Blowout Comb – Digable Planets
Well, I do like hip-hop jazz, and Digable Planets got it goin' on. Great album, and highly unappreciated.

Quite a lot of runners up: Dummy by Portishead... Stranger Than Fiction by Bad Religion... Mix-Ism and Park by THE MAD CAPSULE MARKET'S... Let's Go by Rancid....
    Good year.

(1995) ...And Out Come the Wolves – Rancid
In a similar tone for what I said with Midnight Marauders, this is one of the best punk albums ever. Fo' sho'.

Scratch or Stitch by Melt-Banana is another good one from '95.

(1996) 4 Plugs – The Mad Capsule Markets
Bass driven punk rock. It's awesome, all the way through. I love you Takeshi.

Not much else from '96 that I can think of. Any recommendations?

    (1997) OK Computer – Radiohead
My first Radiohead album (surprise) and definitely one of their best. Good ol' depressing Radiohead.
I never really liked The Bends myself... strange, I know.

Homogenic by Björk is my second choice for '97. A classic album.

    (1998) Keasbey Nights – Catch 22
Shall I do it again? One of the best ska-punk albums ever. Oh yes.

Charlie by Melt-Banana was another good one. And Life Won't Wait by Rancid. I liked how they experimented with reggae and ska on that one.

    (1999) Vent fou – Jorane
Jorane has got to be one of the most under appreciated or simply unknown artists ever. Seriously, listen to this album, it's amazing.

Other mentions go to... Black Sails in the Sunset by AFI. Back when they were good. No Gods / No Managers by Choking Victim, and GAUZE by DIR EN GREY. (I like it.)

    (2000) Teeny Shiny – Melt-Banana
Very interesting album. Weird. And amazing. Very amazing.

16mm by Jorane and Rancid (2000) by Rancid get runner up for the millennium.

(2001) A Call to Arms – Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution
Very unique and uncategorizable music. All acoustic, of course. Strings, horns, guitars, drums, brilliant lyrics from Tomas Kalnoky... I highly recommend this EP.

This would be tied with Amnesiac by Radiohead, my favourite album by them.
Vespertine by Björk and 010 by THE MAD CAPSULE MARKET'S also deserve mention.

(2002) Turn on the Bright Lights – Interpol
Interpol's debut is their best, in my opinion. I suppose it's good that they moved away from the Joy Division sound after a while and got their own sound, but I do love the type of music they were playing here. Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down is one of the best songs ever.

鬼葬 ("Kisou") by DIR EN GREY was another good one of 2002. One of their best albums, I'd say.

(2003) Everything Goes Numb – Streetlight Manifesto
One of those life changing albums for me. I'm not quite sure what it changed exactly... but it reached something deep, emotionally. Yeah, it's good.

犯行声明文 ("Hankou Seimeibun") by the GazettE also came out in 2003. It's my favourite release by them. Oh, and there's VULGAR by DIR EN GREY. Very good album.

(2004) The Power Out – Electrelane
Electrelane are a really good band. All female too, which is cool.
Nice warm atmosphere about this album. Quite gentle.

(2005) in the direction of sunrise and night light – Deadman
One of my favourite albums. deadman just have such a great sound. Shame they broke up. I miss Mako's voice. At least aie and his unique guitar playing hasn't stopped activity.

Withering to death. by DIR EN GREY also came out 2005. Good stuff.
And 蛾蟇 ("Gama") by the GazettE. I really like this EP.

(2006) You Are There – Mono
MONO are geniuses. Some of the best music out there.

(2007) Somewhere In The Between – Streetlight Manifesto
Another classic album from Streetlight. The best kind of ska-punk there is.

studs by the studs was another great release for 2007. I didn't really like anything the band did after this EP though. Ah well...

(2008) UROBOROS – Dir en grey
Probably my favourite album... ever. So of course it's my 2008 pick.

devils in bedside by 9GOATS BLACK OUT is also one of my favourite CDs. Good times in 2008. And the Let the Right One In soundtrack by Johan Söderqvist. It's beautiful.

(2009) 沈黙の音 ("Chinmoku no oto") – …。【サイレンス】 ("Silence")
I already made a journal entry about 2009 releases, so I won't dwell too much. But this EP is quite excellent.

Black rain by 9GOATS BLACK OUT and xx by The xx were also very good.

Well, that was how I wasted my time today. Let's see what I can do to kill time tomorrow...

    Dez 15 2009, 4h42 por PxUnit

Decided to find one with 50 questions this year instead of 40 since that really makes more sense. I'll be using this one from now on. Hurrah.
This year, I've discovered more artists and have been listening to music via Last.fm a lot more.
Also I'll say how many artists I have in my library each year from now on, to see how many artists I've started listening to. I'm not going to day play counts because I just don't feel like it.

    1. How did you get into 29?

  • Brag About Your Top 20

    Fev 28 2009, 8h37 por PxUnit

I made this up because I was bored and it was late. I wrote a journal where you diss your top 20 so why not show them some praise as well? Feel free to take the idea I suppose.

    1. Big D and the Kids Table
I love them. My favorite band hands down. Must be, since they're my #1. All of their songs are amazing. I can honestly say I don't hate or dislike any of their songs. Salem Girls is one of my favorite albums of all time, though some fans don't really like the album, I think it's amazing. Gypsy Hill is a must have for any ska fan. And I don't care what some people have said, I think they've stayed consistently great through all their albums. Even Porch Life because it hilarious. I hope they keep making music for a long time. (:

    2. Leftöver Crack
Just an amazing band. Stza's angry voice is in a way very fulfilling when I listen to them, the angrier sounding the song the more I like it. It must be since one of the first tracks I ever heard of there's was Homeo-Apathy and I fell in love with them. The Good, the Bad and the Leftover Crack is one of my favorite songs ever. I think their cover of Supermarket Song is really great too. Very outspoken band who believe in the words they deliver.

    3. Crass
This band can be addicting if you dig this kind of music. Honestly, Crass scared me at first but I learned to love them. Shaved Women creeped me out and now its one of my favorite songs of theirs. Banned From the Roxy is a very cool song, You've Got Big Hands has a cool bass line, Darling is a song I randomly start singing no matter where I am. Just very catchy and unique, in my opinion.

    4. Fall Out Boy
I'm a very stubborn person, and usually nothing can persuade me to change my thoughts about things. I prove that with this artist. Fall Out Boy is hated by a lot of people, especially by the punk scene, which is the majority of the type of music I listen to. But I like Fall Out Boy and I won't let fame change my opinion about them. Now, I do really dislike Pete Wentz. He seems very fake and the only thing I like about him is his vocals, his lyrics, and the fact that he plays bass for this band. That's it. Otherwise, I think Patrick has a very nice voice, it is unique even though people think other FBR bands sound like FOB, that's because FOB was around first. They're older stuff is awesome, I love how pop-punk it was and its very enjoyable. I love the new stuff as well, its no longer pop-punk but a very unique sound they have created for themselves.

    5. Neutral Milk Hotel
Such a great band! To some people it might take a while for them to get accustomed to their style but when I first heard them I instantly fell in love with them. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is almost godly. When I first got it, I listened to it over and over and I never got sick of it. Every time King of Carrot Flowers Part 2 & 3 come on I can't resist to sing along to "I love you Jesus Chriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiist. I love youuuu yeeeeeesss I doooooo". On Avery Island is very good as well, I find myself singing Song Against Sex often. Jeff Mangum's voice is hauntingly tranceful (if that is even a word ;p) and very alluring. The best Elephant 6 band in my opinion. Of Montreal is pretty good too but not as good as these guys. ;)

    6. Choking Victim
Essential band for anyone to check out if they're looking for great ska/punk bands. No Gods, No Managers is an essential punk album, in my opinion. Crack Rock Steady is one of the greatest ska/punk songs ever. Squattas Paradise is personally a special album for me. Like LoC, I like their angrier songs although LoC has more of those and CV leans more towards ska/punk (Yes I know they're basically the same band ;])

    7. Green Day
This is great band! I don't care what you say! (:
I don't consider Green Day a punk band, I don't even consider their older stuff punk. They're pop-punk though they've gradually lost that as the years have gone by but I still love their music no matter what. Insomniac is one of my favorite albums and so is Warning. Rest is one of my favorite songs of all time. Green Day is such a huge part of my life because they got me into punk and ska. Because of them I discovered Operation Ivy and the rest is history. Green Day will always be one of my favorite bands. (:

    8. The Mad Conductor
This band is truly unique and there is no other band out there like them. I honestly like them better than No Cash. The mixture of hip-hop, reggae, dub and outer space-like sounds just works! When I got the Mechanical Claw EP I was so eager for a full album to come out because it was so good and I didn't like having only 5 songs. Tomb Diggin' Shovels is extremely catchy and I can never ever get tired of it. Renegade Space Rock is great. Destapadores is my favorite song off the album. Very unique sounding band that is worth checking out.

    9. High School Football Heroes
One of my favorite ska bands, or should I say, skemo. I'd have to say, this is one of the very few bands that I think the second album is better than the first, even though its an EP. I just think the quality is better and it's more ska-ish. Nonetheless, I think the first album is great as well. A Long Look At a Short Lived Dream is very catchy and one of my favorites. I love all the songs on the EP. But I haven't heard from them in a while and that makes me sad. ): I saw them at Warped Tour '06 and met with George (HSFH lead vox) and Drew (former Patent Pending bassist) and its a very funny story... If you really want to know it just ask and I'll be glad to tell it. Anyways, I ended up getting a picture with Mike & Drew (Patent Pending), Dave & George (HSFH) and Kevin (new lead of Catch 22). It was really one of the best days of my life.

    10. The Suicide Machines
First of all, I'm still upset that they broke up. ):
Anyways, if you listen to ska/punk you must listen to these guys if you haven't before. Very great band. Some of my favorite songs of theirs are Hey, Vans Song, DDT, and No Face. I love their angry punk stuff just as much as their ska/punk stuff. They're a very likable band. I actually wish they're name stayed as Jack Kevorkian and the Suicide Machines because I just think it sounds. And yes I do know who Jack Kevorkian is. ;) Anyways, Destruction By Definition = essential ska/punk album.

    11. The Arrogant Sons of Bitches
I really don't know how they surpass Bomb the Music Industry! since I have so many more of their songs. Hah.
Anyways, a very cool ska/punk band. I don't think they're for every ska/punk fan, since they are a little different but nonetheless a band that you should check out if you're getting into the ska/punk scene. Jeff is just crazy. Stupid band name, stupid song names, you can't help but love it. I Just Wanna Have Sex With You is probably one of my favorite songs of theirs. Hah. Simply because it can make me laugh.

    12. Panic at the Disco
Very mad the ! is gone...
Pretty much same thing applies to this band as does Fall Out Boy, I don't care what anyone says, I really like this band. I sort of don't like what fame has done to them but whatever. I still listen to them apparently.
Thought I do actually like the new album, I like the old one much better. I really liked the electronic upbeat, circus-esque sound of the first album and I was really looking forward to another album like that and I was slightly disappointed. On the other hand, dropping the ! and getting the new sound might have been a reborn process. Oddly enough, Folkin' Around is one of my favorite songs on the album. As for the old one I absolutely adore Time To Dance. I'm glad it never got on the radio or else it would have gotten played out. I even read Invisible Monster's because of that song! Just incase you didn't know, the song was written based off that book. ;)

    13. Bomb the Music Industry!
Very fun band. I like them more than ASOB that's why I'm puzzled as to why they aren't ahead of them but whatever. I think the songs are funnier than ASOB and for some reason I think they're a little less punk than ASOB? I dunno I'm just ranting now. Anyway! They're worth checking out especially since all of their songs are free to download. Their song names are just straight ridiculous. But I love Does Your Face Hurt? No? 'Cause It's Killin' Me!!!, Tell My Boss, "I Hate You" and Sorry, Brooklyn. Dancing Won't Solve Anything. I think this band is a little more ska-ish sounding to me too... hmm. Well, yes, a very enjoyable band and worth checking out if you haven't already.

    14. Gym Class Heroes
I'm surprised that these guys are on my top 20 actually, I didn't know I listened to them that much. I never thought that these guys would actually go mainstream, but they did! I didn't really mind though, but I started to not like Cupid's Chokehold afterwards...
But this about praising this band! Very unique and Travis is very talented. The Papercut Chronicles is a very good hip-hop album and worth checking out if you're a fan of hip-hop. Papercuts is a great song and so is Simple Livin'. As Cruel As School Children gave a more poppy sound to them but nonetheless catchy. I haven't listened to the newest album much yet, but it's a bit more back to the hip-hop. I would really love to get my hands on some of their older stuff...

    15. Morning Glory
Yet another child bore from Choking Victim, some of the songs are very catchy. Less ska and more punk than CV. Long Live Revolution Rock is my favorite song of theirs and it's a song you feel like you can go out into the streets and sing it at the the top of your lungs. Two other songs I really like, The Whole World is Watching and Gimme Heroin, are more towards ska and very good songs. Any fan of Crack Rock Steady should definitely check this band out.

    16. Every Time I Die
One of the very, very few metalcore bands I really like. I have no idea how I gravitated to this band, it must have been destiny. They are pretty unique since there are tinges of a southern rock and hardcore sound in their music. I really enjoy listening to this band, despite them being metalcore, some of their songs are catchy. Some of my favorites are Gloom and How It Gets That Way, I Been Gone a Long Time, Pornogratherapy and L'Astronaut. They have some unique sounding songs that I think gives them individuality. All in all, I think they're worth a listen. (:

    17. Antischism
My favorite crust punk band! Its sort of biased because they're from my neck of the woods. Yep, this is probably one of the best bands my state has produced (in my opinion anyway). I think crust fans should definitely give this band a listen, I think they're pretty good. One of my favorite songs of theirs is Lines on a Map. I would really like to actually get my hands on a CD of theirs. Some members of this band went on to form the band Chronicle A/D and the very few songs they have released are actually very good. I'm not sure what else is going on with them though. But yes, give Antischism a listen if you're a punk fan. ;)

    18. Scary Kids Scaring Kids
This band is one of those emoish/alternative bands that just got me drawn into them. The City Sleeps In Flames got me hooked on them after watching the video of My Darkest Hour. I loved how they used an electronic sound with their songs which make them unique. SKSK's songs are enjoyable to listen to and my favorite song of the new album is Star Crossed Lovers. On their After Dark EP has another one of my favorites, What's Up Now which incorporates the electronic keyboards very well. Overall, a very good post-hardcore band. (:

    19. No Cash
Very great ska/punk band. Considered a crack rock steady band and certainly loved by crack rock steady fans alike. They only had one album but their songs are pretty satisfying. Gasoline, Wilkes-Booth Style and Run Your Pockets are my favorite songs. Gasoline seems like the early comings of The Mad Conductor, no? More punk than ska, in my opinion, than other crack rock steady bands but they're sound makes them stand out against the others. Once again, worth checking out if you're an LoC and CV fan!

    20. 岩垂徳行
For those who have no idea what that says, it is Noriyuki Iwadare. My most unique artist in my top 20 and I'd have to say my most talented. As you might tell, Iwadare is not ska nor punk band. Not hardcore nor emo. Iwadare is an amazing composer of many music soundtracks. The one I listen to is the orchestral Gyakuten Saiban soundtrack or in other words, the Ace Attorney soundtrack. His work is amazing and I can never get sick of it. (: The Fragrance of Dark Colored Coffee, both orchestra and jazz versions are brilliant. The Steel Samurai Theme is another one of my favorites. A truly great composer that deserves praise.

Alright, this seemed to turn into somewhat of a summary and discovery but oh well, it's very late and I'm very tired and this took a very long time to type. ;)

    1. Big D and the Kids Table
(Honestly very hard to do...) The only bad thing I can really say is I'm mad they never come near my place on tours and I want a new album already.

    2. Leftöver Crack
Quit being such whiney babies about America, if you have such a problem with it move to another country!

    3. Crass
Learn how to actually play your instruments.

    4. Fall Out Boy
Emo sell outs! I honestly do despise Pete Wentz.

    5. Neutral Milk Hotel
Jeff Mangum has a funny voice and some of their songs are... yeah.

    6. Choking Victim
Pretty much the same as LoC. Plus some of your songs are recorded so crappy I don't listen to them much.

    7. Green Day
OMG JUST RELEASE YOUR NEXT FRIGGIN' CD ALREADY! Jesus, what's the point of making your fans wait YEARS for another album! Quit it with the Foxboro Hot Tubs and be Green Day!

    8. High School Football Heroes
Skemo? Come on. And quit confusing people, have you broken up or not?
Plus a lot of your songs sound the same.

    9. The Mad Conductor
This one was hard for me to insult as well. I love most of their songs, but a couple are sort of eh.

    10. The Suicide Machines
What is up with some of those poppy songs!?
And I'm still grieving over the break up you know... a little part of me died that day.

    11. The Arrogant Sons of Bitches
Honestly some of their songs are stupid and obnoxious.

    12. Panic at the Disco
I'm extremely mad that the ! is gone. I'm mad the new album was nothing at all like the first one, although good in it's own way I was eager to hear more songs like the first album. I still miss Brendon.

    13. Bomb the Music Industry!
    Honestly, who play the computer?

    14. Gym Class Heroes
What happened to the hip-hop vibe after the first album? The second was much less hip-hop although your new one is sort of a combination of the two. And I hate that you went mainstream with Cupid's Chokehold. Not really sure why but I didn't like it.

    15. Morning Glory
Another band the guys of LoC dreamt up because they can't stay in one band for long. Some recordings are crappy and some songs I don't really like.

    16. Every Time I Die
Some songs sound the same, older stuff is better.

    17. Antischism
Why did they have to break up!?
Some of their songs I could live without though...

    18. Scary Kids Scaring Kids
First of all, stupid band name. Second, newer albums aren't the greatest. Cover of Notorious Thugs is fantastic though.

    19. No Cash
Mad they only made one album, a couple of their songs I don't really like. Vocal get annoying after a while, no one can compare to Stza.

    20. Juanes
I really don't know how he is in my top 20. Hah. Most of his songs are good but I don't really like some of them

This was very difficult to do. Hah. I feel bad for dissing all of these artists since they're apparently in my top 20 for a reason. I apologize everyone. (: Heh.
