Jim Beard and the new Walter Becker album!

We've just wrapped up an international conference call with Siggy and Neb from the esteemed Radio Dupree in Sweden. It was a very important meeting. There is some news about Walter Becker's new album, courtesy of mr. Jim Beard. We're alas a little too tired right now to work with what was handed to us so graciously, so we figured it would be ultimately appropriate to make it an April Fools' Day article. So, for now, Jim's the word and see ya'll tomorrow!

We did post a little ditty over on a Steely Dan fan guestbook The Blue earlier as an appetizer:

Jim Beard: "The CD sounds very nice. Warm and fat. Great tunes and grooves. Nothing like 11TofW. Walter sounds great on it. I think the fans will be happy."

Which tracks do represent "New Romantic" style best?

I would like you to get involved in this.

There are tons of compilations CLAIMING THEY REPRESENT THE STYLE BEST
Over the years I've been adding to this looong list for the songs which represent the New Romantic music style best.

Can you please add something I missed? Disagree about some or suggest to put some songs higher in this list to be more visible?

It takes to read the whole bunch or better just scroll the column of artists on the right to say if I'm right.

China Crisis @ the Brook, Southampton 12/10/07

Fri 12 Oct – China Crisis
I saw China Crisis at the Brook in Southampton. I briefly saw Eddie Lundon outside the venue before I went in but sadly I didn't a chance to talk to him.
The venue was small but quite nice and they actaully played good mix of New Wave and Disco before the gig started. The support band was a band called The Kovacs, While not the sort of band I would usually like I thought they were quite good.
Then China Crisis came on. The first song they did was Strength Of Character and they did most of their best known songs Black Man Ray Wishful Thinking, King in a Catholic Style, Christian and African And White and they also did It's Everything, You Did Cut Me and Diary of a Hollow Horse I was pleasently surprised to hear The Soul Awakening but disappointed they didn't do Working With Fire And Steel
They also did a few songs I didn't know which I liked the sound of I think I need to get a few more of thier albums. On the whole it was a good night and the band put on a good show.

Stars in their eyes

I have a friend who's in a successful funk band - well, as much as a funk band is ever successful. But what's weird for him is how much bigger they are in North America than back in the UK. So he goes over the pond and plays to thousands at various festivals and gets adoring fans asking tedious questions about his drum kit. Then he comes back to the UK and plays a gig to 60 pissed students who don't even like funk. It's a strange life.

I was thinking about my friend's band as I watched Stars last night at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds. Now, I LOVE the Brudenell, it's probably one of my favourite venues, but it is basically a working men's club turned indie, and I wondered what it must be like for Stars playing to pretty hefty audiences in their native Canada, then doing the gig over here to 200 sweaty students.

But then there's nothing like an intimate gig, and you sure as hell find out whether a band can cut it. And boy, did Stars cut it. The signs were initially ominous. We had a line up that seemed to consist of Weird Al Yankovic on drums, some twit from the Scissor Sister on bass, and two lead singers, one of whom is that girl you've seen at every indie disco of the last 15 years, and one of whom bears an uncanny resemblance to
(G.O.B. the unsuccessful magician brother from Arrested Development). That and the fact that he was clearly *cough* *cough* about my age.

Such fears were unfounded.
Stars aren't like a lot of bands I like. They're poppier, most straightforward, less obtuse, and dare I say it, more mainstream. But there's something irresistible about the interplay between the male and female vocals, and the songs are just out of the world. It's strange too, that although some of the influences on them are great stuff like, say, early REM Kirsty MacColl or power pop like Big Star and more latterly, The New Pornographers, some more worrying bands popped into my head now again. Sure, these days liking The Cars is acceptable, but I'm not sure we'll ever see a China Crisis revival any time soon.

But like all good bands, Stars were greater than the sum of their parts and completely won over an audience, half of whom barely knew the band. And, how did I know most of them were young students? Well, apart from the trying-too-hard-fashion, because when Torquil (let's not go there with the name?) dedicated a song to the peerless The Wedding Present, three people cheered, me being one of them. Those in the room were too young to even know who the Weddoes were, let alone that they were one of the best bands to come from Leeds. Tsk, tsk, young people today... ;-)

Um, well, I still haven’t progressed with the whole 1982 thing *embarrassed silence*….so here’s another Lyrics Game instead!

This time around all the song titles have place names in them (planets,countries, cities, towns and streets). They’re all the names of real locations…though the song writer may not have necessarily have had the real location in mind. You’ll see what I mean. Some of them may also use a colloquial or slang name for that place (for instance LA might be referred to as ‘The City of Angels’)
