  • Autumn & Jazz in Kiev

    Out 24 2009, 14h45 por ukrsamurai

Fri 16 Oct – Jazz in Kiev 2009

«Mike, could you please sign my ticket? – Yes, thank you for coming! ».

Stats, part 5: jazz

    Ago 20 2009, 16h15 por -273C

Just another one statistical post. Jazz is our field of research today (top-100 of the tag jazz, to be exact).

    предыдущие посты / previous entries
    mainstream
    russian rock
    progressive rock
    black metal

First of all, our traditional arrangement with respect to number of plays and number of listeners.

    Pic. 1 - full size

    Pic. 2 - full size

In both cases the most popular artist is Amy Winehouse (and, yes, I supposed it would be correct to exclude Tom Waits from jazz stats). Then the things go more classical: Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and so on.

    Pic. 3

And that's the way, general dependence of playcount to number of listeners looks like. You can notice, it's bending upwards with growing number of listeners. So, that means, the leaders of our statistics are treated by listeners in a different way, than other artists.

    Pic. 4 - full size

The graph of specific number of scrobbles (a playcount divided by number of listeners for each artist) confirms that notation. Surprisingly, jazz artists have very low specific scrobble number - 11 in average. Amy Winehouse has the highest one - 32.

    Pic. 5

The histogram just supports concentrating of specific number of scrobbles near very low values, repeating the histogram for other genres in general. Sad, but true. Is jazz dead?

    Pic. 6

Some stats about the user activity in shoutboxes. As one can see, there's no strict dependence of number of shouts to number of listeners. It's obvious, that more popular artists should get more shouts. By the way, Amy Winehouse isn't included here - see the next plot to understand why.

    Pic.7

And here's the dependence of number of shouts in the shoutbox to specific number of scrobbles. Amy Winehouse takes the lead again, having six times more shouts than others. So, she's really anomalous for the jazz. And without Amy, the graph exhibits the property, found in previous research: average specific number of scrobbles behaves like a barrier, separating artists with few shouts from artists with lots of them. Let us see, what another genres would show us the next time)

The total playcount in jazz's top-100 is 348 millions.

  • Miles Davis - On the Corner

    Jul 14 2009, 21h30 por Dyokhatta

This review was originally posted on Rate Your Music on 14 July, 2009: http://rateyourmusic.com/collection/Joci/rating16095639

On the Corner was released in 1972 as an attempt by Miles to get closer to the young black audience. This is an admirable intention, but so many people despise this record. "It is cacophonous/too hard to get/too hard to follow/not jazz," they say. Well, it certainly isn't jazz. It's simply music with directions by Miles Davis (as it is implied on the album covers).

I'm not a jazz expert, so my approach may not be that consistent. First of all, I really love this album. It took me quite a long time until it grew on me, but it finally happened. Although the album has four tracks (two in the 20 minute range and two short ones), it feels like a continuous groove over the same rhythm pattern.

Many people find the album tedious and monotonous, but if one listens to the album a bit more carefully (not as mere background music), they will find so many nuances and little parts that are really enjoyable and quite diverse. I think I managed to find these little parts and I can really feel the groove of the music. It's not about traditional song structures, it's just about the groove, the particular feel that the musicians had while recording and the feeling you get while you listen. If one pays attention, certain motifs reappear in the songs, such as the main "riff" of On the Corner (the song) and the main theme of Black Satin in Helen Butte/Mr. Freedom X.

The instrumentation is also very interesting. Miles often utilizes his new electric trumpet whose sound is fed through a wah-wah pedal, thus creating a tone similar to an electric guitar. At times he sounds like Hendrix, especially when he plays those "screaming" sounds. Another special addition is the sitar, although it is featured much less than the other instruments. It gives a sort of Eastern vibe to the music, which is quite unusual even for Miles. The line-up features some of Miles' best-known sidemen: among others, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Jack DeJohnette.

All in all, On the Corner often feels like an ambient album from the time when that term hasn't even been coined. But while typical ambient music is peaceful and helps one relax, this album grabs you and doesn't let you go, not even when it's over. The cover art is a perfect reflection of the music: the tumultuous vibe of the city (NYC) with its archetypal figures: the pimp, the prostitute (at least it seems to me like that), the down and out businessman and the hipsters dancing in the street.

I strongly recommend this album to anyone who would like to dig deep into Miles' music. However, the music might not reward you with its treasures right after the first listen.

It's About That Time (Miles Davis)

Note to people sitting next to me: You don't have to ruin the show for everyone around you by yelling out things like, "Wow!" and "Jesus Christ" and "What the fuck?" every single time there's a drum roll, or a sustained sax note, or an arpeggio performed, no matter how many Miller Lites you had before the show. It's nice that you're learning to appreciate jazz, but you don't have to try to prove it to the people around you by acting like you know what's going on on stage. Fucking idiots.
