    Avete mai fatto caso a come le figure dei cosiddetti "serial-killer" esercitino una costante influenza sulla cultura popolare? Inutile citare i film e i romanzi (tantissimi) ispirati a queste figure maledette, concentriamoci invece sui riferimenti agli "s-k" disseminati nel mondo della musica, rock e metal.

    - David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz: citato, ad esempio, nel testo di 'Insane in the brain' dei Cypress Hill;
    - Ten Bundy: 'Ted, just admit it', canzone dei Jane's Addiction;
    - Jeffrey Dahmer: 'Dirty Frank', canzone dei Pearl Jam, Dahmer è citato anche nel testo di 'Trigger inside' dei Therapy?;
    - John Wayne Gacy: 'Pogo the clown', canzone dei Dog Fahion Disco, il personaggio di Capitan Spaulding ne La casa dei 1000 corpi di Rob Zombie oppure gli stessi Insane Clown Posse;
    - Ed Gein: 'Nothing to Gein', canzone dei Mudvayne;
    - Ed Kemper: l'unreleased-track dei System of a Down 'Forever' pare si riferisca a Kemper;
    - Armin Meiwes: cannibale (non è propriamente un serial-killer in quanto non mi pare abbia commesso almeno tre omicidi, ma lo cito lo stesso) che ha ispirato 'Mein teil' dei Rammstein;
    - Charles Manson: Marilyn Manson (ovviamente), la canzone dei System Of A Down 'ATWA' cita scritti di Manson;
    - Zodiac Killer: 'Gemini', canzone degli Slayer;
    - Angel of Death: come l'omonima canzone degli Slayer, "Angelo della Morte" è un nickname attribuito a più serial-killer soprattutto nel caso di "infermiere killer".

    Per non parlare dei vari nomi d'arte adottati negli anni dai componenti dei Marilyn Manson (Gidget Gein, Daisy Berkowitz, Olivia Newton Bundy, Madonna Wayne Gacy, Ginger Fish) o delle citazioni disseminate nella scena death-grind (gli Ed Gein, i Bathory, i Dahmer, i Macabre…) che mi sfuggono o della collezione di oggetti appartenuti a serial-killer vantata da Jonathan Davis dei KoЯn!!!

    Quindi... guardatevi le spalle mentre scrobblate!

    After releasing his masterpiece, U2 2004's sweeping epic arena rock masterpiece How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, Bono took a well-deserved hiatus before going slowly insa

    Hey, what's up. I'm stop_jackin_it and I was going to tell you the current news of the terrible massacre occuring in Gaza Strip's since late December, however, I realised that I was no Jewish journalist trying to cover up the magnitude of the disaster to CNN, so I just came here to talk about all the minor annoyances that have been happening to me lately. One of them's lack of sleep. During the last two fucking weeks I haven't been able to sleep properly until 2-3 AM, and I've had to make myself a shitty tasteless sandwhich, turn on the TV to watch some good ole porno/pseudo-(f)arty "independent" films, and read several times The Catcher in the Rye to try to get Mark David Chapman and Charles Manson out of jail. I've tried everything: weed, coke, acid and (of course) some booze. Must be related to the end of this fucking world coming on 3 years. (Main article: Barack Obama).

    Oh, another problem I've had is that thanks to this shitty insomnia problem is that everyone says I've had been screaming at them for no good reason when I wake up at 7 pm, after 16 deserved hours full of sleep. The problem is that nowadays everyone's listeing their shitty with their stupid, crappy iPods at full volume, causing them to be UNAVOIDABLY AND INVARIBLY FUCKING DEAF, WHICH MEANS THAT I HAVE TO TALK TO EVERYONE USING THIS -ANNOYING FOR SOME- VOLUME SO THEY CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I'M SAYING. OK? FINE. COME AND SUE ME IF YOU WANT TO, SNEAKY BASTARD!

    Oh, I have another problem. I have another week and a half off. Since the last holiday season was officially the shittiest I've ever had and the last 2 weeks have been even more boring than meeting a homosexual and Cockio Hotel-loving metalhead, I decided that I was gonna hang myself tomorrow if I didn't find something else to do.

    Fortunately, I remembered that the latest Woody Allen's movie was being displayed on some nearby theater and decided to invite a friend to watch it.

    Which brings me, unfortunately, to Twilight. My friend already saw that other film and I missed the opportunity to watch Scarlett Johansson's hypnotizing cleavage, so we decided to wear our best movie critic/snob clothing and watch Twilight.

    Ass.

    It was one of the corniest, phoniest, most disgusting things I've ever paid for. What the fuck was smoking whoever was the author of this big pile of feces???? And who was idiot enough to spend several million dollars producing a film adaptation of this senseless (even for a fiction story) Dracula-meets-Romeo-and-Juliet "tale"?? I think that someone needs a crash course on economy, particularly these days, when Wall Street's sucking a big cock and fucking up the entire world...

    I refrain from telling you specific details of the film, because you may as well waste your money reading the book or find the movie's plot on Wikipedia and save time, but I think I'll have to share a detail or two about it:

    -One of the main characters, known as Bella, looked like a fucking pseudo-vegan, anorexic slut. Her male counterpart, Edward, seemed to be a racist and assholish-looking bully. The only character I found any redeemable was his sister, whose name I don't remember but I found very fuckable.

    -The soundtrack. Oh well. If you're 10 and love Paramore and have orgasms when you listen TocarDecode, watching this will become one of your life-defining moments. Best moment of the film: When Tocar15 Step started playing, of course! Which was curiously enough the end of the film and the start of the credits, and I closed my eyes and imagined I was watching something like "(No Matter How Overrated You Say We Are, We're Still) Radiohead: The Concert" instead of having spent two of the most eternally tedious hours of my life watching that piece of crap. Worst moment: Why, the baseball scene, of course! I don't have anything against Supermassive Black Hole or something, but I don't find any attractive the prospect of watching a bunch of apparent vampires playing baseball to the rhythm of Muse (which some of you may know as Thom Yorke meets Rage Against the Machine meets fake progressive rock) trying to have an appropiate sound to be remixed so it can be heard in a bar for s on a friday night. I just wish I could unsee it. Oh, my poor eyes :'(

    In conclusion, if you're a MCR/Panic at the Disco/Fall Out Boy ignorant fangirl/fangay, you should probably see it. If you don't, though, do something else: vandalize Wikipedia, stalk your neighbours, become the new Bill Gates, build a house for someone who needs it, make a band and become the biggest rock star ever... but please don't dare to watch this stupid piece of rubbish. Thank you very much.

    PS: Do not fap to my review. thanks!
    PPS: How could I not connect this to the Twilight Soundtrack?

    SEPTEMBER 2008 RELEASES

    ESP-DISK, the premiere American avant garde record label of the sixties -- one of the most turbulently creative periods in music history – has returned to reclaim its rich legacy with a series of releases that include reissues of groundbreaking out of print albums from its extensive catalogue, exciting previously unreleased live sessions from its vaults and new recordings that follow in its great tradition of presenting cutting edge modern musicians under the banner of “The artists alone decide …” The latest collection of compact discs from the company is comprised of re-releases: three important free jazz dates by Lowell Davidson, Gunter Hampel, and Karel Velebny, and a freak-folk session by MIJ from the label’s glory days, digitally remastered and attractively packaged with reproductions of the records’ striking original art work and reminisces from label founder Bernard Stollman, along with a brand new trio cd from French bassist/compser Stephane Furic Leibovici featuring reedsmen Chris Cheek and Chris Speed, Jugendstil.

    ESP 1012: Lowell Davidson Trio

    Brought to the attention of ESP-Disk’ by Ornette Coleman, Lowell Davidson recorded his singular session, Trio, on July 27th, 1965 with Gary Peacock and the ever amazing Milford Graves. Sadly, the only recording ever released by Davidson, it remains fresh and exciting 40 plus years later. A unique piano trio recording in the tradition of Cecil Taylor and Herbie Nichols.

    "Davidson is not as well known as he should be, a pianist of extraordinary virtuosity, his compositions held loose, minimalist frameworks which gave way to solos of extraordinary harmonic complexity and were hallmarked by oddly dissociative serial runs." - Clifford Allen, All About Jazz

    ESP 1042: Gunter Hampel Group - Music From Europe

    Recorded in Baarn, Holland, on December 21st, 1966, Music From Europe was a strong statement of European free jazz from one of its first and strongest leaders, Gunter Hampel. Over the beautifully structured compositional suites are strong blowing and improvising by both reedmen (Hampel, Breuker) and the elastic rhythm section (Veening, Courbois).

    "Gunter Hampel's second release as a leader and his only one for ESP. Hampel (heard on vibes, bass clarinet and flute) teams up with the many reeds of Willem Breuker (soprano, bass clarinet, tenor, alto, baritone and clarinet), plus bassist Piet Veening and drummer Pierre Courbois during three complex and sometimes eccentric originals. The nearly 22-minute "Assemblage" is the main piece, and overall, the music is an interesting combination of composition and very free improvising, giving one an interesting early look at Hampel and Breuker." - Scott Yanow

    ESP 1080: Karel Velebny - SHQ

    Another example of European free improvisation, Karel Velebny's SHQ on occasion feels a little tentative in comparison to full-on fearless explorations like the work of Peter Brötzmann or Fred Van Hove. Although there are several free passages, especially on the largely solo opener "The Uhu Sleeps Only During the Day," the rhythm section of pianist Ludek Svabensky, bassist Karel Vejvoda, and drummer Josef Vejvoda largely sticks to basic post-bop rhythms that rein in Velebny's bass clarinet and tenor saxophone and Jirí Stivín's woodwinds. As exploratory post-bop goes, this is often very good stuff, particularly on the closing "Andulko Safarova," which has the graceful, floating quality of one of Gil Evans' more exotic scores, and the swinging "Joachim Is Our Friend."

    ESP 1098: MIJ - Yodeling Astrologer

    When MIJ, aka Jim Holmberg was found by ESP-Disk’s Bernard Stollman, yodeling by the fountain in Washington Square Park, on a hot, summer Sunday afternoon in 1969, he explained that an auto accident had fractured his skull and impaired his hearing. But it had also altered his perceptions and enabled him to do things that he did not understand, but which worked musically. The next day ESP-Disk' sent him into the studio to record Yodeling Astrologer. With Onno Scholtze's help, MIJ explored the possibilities of multiple reverb to provide a series of echoes for his yodeling. When the project was completed, both participants continued to reverberate. They may be reverberating still. An original freak folk classic.

    ESP 2003: Charles Manson - Sings

    Charles Manson visited New York City in the early 60s with his guitar and his songs in a vain search for recognition. In Beverly Hills, famous musicians gave him their studio to produce this album. He has vocal backup from the women of the "family". During a stay in a San Francisco prison, he met a fellow inmate, and gave him the album to release. While Manson was being tried and convicted of participation in the murder spree, the government attempted to discredit the hippie movement by citing him as an example, hoping to defuse the rising tide of anger among the population over the war in Viet Nam. Because his songs were considered musically and historically significant, Sings was released briefly by ESP in 1974, and is now being reissued. All royalties are paid to the son of one of the victims, who obtained a judgement against Manson. It has been expanded from 14 to 26 tracks!

    ESP 4048: Chris Speed, Chris Cheek, Stephane Furic Leibovici - Jugendstil

    Jugendstil is a brand-new release by bassist/composer Stephane Furic Leibovici (The Twitter Machine, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry – Soul Note Records). The music is based on compositional material which is developed through organic means (not repetitive means). This session was recorded with long time collaborators Chris Speed (clarinet) and Chris Cheek (tenor and soprano saxophones), produced by Jim Black, and recorded by Joey Marciano in NYC on June 20th, 2006 with liner notes by Kevin Whitehead.

    "Stephane Furic's deceptively simple and elegant compositions pretty much played themselves, realized
    and colored by two of the greatest sounds on the planet, Chris Cheek and Chris Speed."- Jim Black

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

    The music recorded by ESP-Disk in the mid-sixties has had a profound influence on succeeding generations of improvisors. Its liberating effects have been deeply felt not just in modern jazz, but also in the worlds of rock, folk, classical and free improv, contributing greatly to the artistic freedom that true creativity craves and real art requires. The release of this new music for the ages insures that today’s artists will have the opportunity to hear some of the defiant sounds that helped define the tumultuous times in which they were first made.

    1. How did you get into 29?
    I got into Charles Manson after hearing Devendra Banhart's cover of "TocarHome is Where You're Happy." I read up on Charlie's musical history and life, and was fascinated by the beauty of his vision and perspective. It's a shame that most people are taught to fear this man for his actions, and never look beyond the scapegoat status that society has forced onto him.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
    I'm not positive which John Fahey song i heard first, but it may have been "TocarLion" off of a compilation of Devendra related music. John Fahey easily became my favorite guitarist.

    3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33?
    Something about Arcade Fire that makes them very special to me is how much of their lyrics I sung in my heart before hearing their songs, so picking a favorite lyric is nearly impossible. If I must, however, I'll say "I'm livin' in an age/that calls darkness light/though my language is dead/still its shapes fill my head" from "My Body Is A Cage." So much from Funeral means a lot to me, also. "Tunnels" especially.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49?
    The Allman Brothers Band's Eat A Peach or At Fillmore East.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
    Two by The Strokes: Is This It and Room on Fire.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
    "TocarBat Macumba" by Os Mutantes because it's so fun to sing. Hard to choose, though.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
    Definitely. It's a shame that Ramblin' Jack Elliott is so low on my chart, he means a lot to me. When I saw him play last winter in Berkeley (one of the most beautiful experiences I've been a part of), he ended with "South Coast," that last note echoing into the universe, never ending, and tears in my eyes.

    8. What is your favorite album by 15?
    Beirut's The Flying Club Cup.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
    I can't answer this. Kevin Barnes is a genius, I mean it, and of Montreal supports him perfectly. Lyrics, melody, everything. I won't even try to pick one.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
    YES. Marc Bolan, another genius. T. Rex makes me happy and feel the need to move. I'd say "TocarMambo Sun" and "The Slider" make me happiest.

    11. What is your favorite album by 41?
    Really the only album I've listened to of Jens Lekman is Oh You're So Silent Jens, a very beautiful album.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
    Beck! I'd say "Debra" or "TocarE-Pro," but there are so so many.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 31?
    Hmmm...Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons was there for me during my first dives into "Freak Folk," so I definitely have great memories of learning and loving his voice, all the beautiful and unique voices of these golden souls.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38?
    From The Sound of Music? I think "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Edelweiss."

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
    Mmmm, Caetano Veloso. Is there ever, lol. The first is definitely "TocarLost In The Paradise," then "TocarThe Empty Boat" and "Sozinho." "Paradise" is, I completely believe, a perfect song. And "Sozinho" is a river of lightly floating blood, pure and clear.

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
    David Bowie...never, lol.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
    Cold War Kids.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
    The Black Keys

    DEVENDRA BANHART - um... devendra i suppose.
