  • Average age of the top 100 artists I listen to...

Well, I omitted groups (any act that contains more than one person such as TLC), so it may not be accurate. Oh, and artists that appear twice (such as Shanice and Shanice Wilson) will only be counted once. With those things out of the way, it comes down to these 66 artists...

    Rihanna 02/20/88

So to calculate the average age, (1) I copied the data into Excel, (2) highlighted all the dates, and then (3) I see my answer at the bottom tab. The average age of individual artists in my top 100 is 41. More specifically, the average birthdate is March 27, 1967 so Chanté Moore would be the closest to that date of birth. Also coincidentally, March 27 was the day I joined last.fm.

random fact: Miriam Makeba and Rihanna are the oldest and youngest artist on the list respectively and they are both actually tied at #90 with 84 plays.

  • Albums I've Recently Purchased

    Jun 22 2008, 10h05 por Di-chy

    (Left)
    Dwele
    Kano

    (Right)
    Chante Moore
    Imani Coppola

Skethces of a Man is the third studio album from Detroit neo-soul artist Dwele. His MySpace page and online retailers' websites read that it's scheduled to be released at June 24th, but it was already available yesterday at a HMV store near my house and I picked it up right away. This album is his first Koch release and contains the lead single "I'm Cheatin'." Well, Bobby Caldwell cover "Open Your Eyes" is a pleasant surprise.

Beautiful songstress Chante Moore just released her first solo album in 8 years, Love The Woman, last week. After releasing two duet albums with her husband Kenny Lattimore, Chanté then signed to jazz label Peak Records and started making this solo album. The lead single "It Ain't Supposed To Be This Way" is a smooth jazz tune, but the whole album is more like "Jazz-influenced R&B" and hasn't gone too far from her older works.

Kano is a British hip-hop/grime MC and London Town is his second studio album, which was released in 2007. This album features various styles of sound other than grime and guest spots from variety of artists, including Craig David, Kate Nash and Damon Albarn of Blur.

Chupacabra is the debut album by female singer/rapper Imani Coppola, which was released more than 10 years ago. Since I got hooked by a song by some group called Little Jackie and found out that Imani is its vocalist, I've been also interested with her solo works and decided to buy this CD. Little Jackie is now preparing for their debut album, The Stoop, due at July 8th.

  • Timeline

    Fev 10 2008, 4h47 por TMoor

A new Last.fm friend recently asked me my favorite songs of all time. I can't compile a list that narrow, but it did get me to thinking about the music I've listened to over the years.

Like the first song I remember hearing: "Hit the Road Jack" by Ray Charles. I was 3.

The first song I ever learned, my older brother taught me:

    It's a me
    It's a me Oh Lord
Standin' in the need of prayer

I grew up on Top 40 radio and remember first paying attention to rotation with "Another Saturday Night" by Sam Cooke. The concept of "crossover" music was years away for me.

One year my older sister came back from summer vacation with a stack of albums that I quickly appropriated. Artists like Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Friends of Distinction, Junior Walker & the All-Stars. She also had a coupla things I just couldn't get with: A mopped female vocal quartet called The Beatle Buddies and a female country singer. All I remember about her was a cover of Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe." And then there were the two albums that I eventually would wear out by the newly renamed Diana Ross & The Supremes: "Reflections" and "Love Child" -- which began my fascination with the group and its troubling lead singer. Especially the latter collection and specifically the title tune. It answered important questions in my life that I didn't know how to pose at the time. And it was the first time a song's lyrics ever resonated with me.

I started my own music collection (of 45 singles) with the 90-cent purchase of Laura Lee's "Women's Love Rights."

I was in junior high school when I was exposed to "Black radio." In heavy rotation at the time were gems such as "Master of Eyes (The Deepness of Your Eyes)" by Aretha Franklin, "Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye.

The first album I ever bought was "Rags to Rufus" by Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan.

I was a college freshman studying in my dorm room. Normally I liked to study by the school (or one of the city) radio station's quiet-storm airings. This particular day one show ended and another began. No segue, no anouncement -- just a sensual jazz guitar intro and even more sensual vocals: "You're so late getting home from the office./Did you miss your train?/Were you caught in the rain?" Nancy Wilson's "Guess Who I Saw Today" was my introduction to jazz. Years before, I'd seen Sarah Vaughan on a TV talk show. I didn't know who she was. The host made a big deal over the guest as did my mother. I wasn't impressed. Frankly, I thought she sounded like a man. It wasn't until college that I heard "Key Largo" and "Gloomy Sunday" and fell in love with that voice. My quote for years had been: Nancy Wilson turned me on to jazz, but Sarah Vaughan turned me out.

Later on during my college years -- while I was seriously feelin' Patti LaBelle, Patti Austin, Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Roberta Flack, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, The Emotions and, of course, Aretha Franklin -- a friend lent me an album cassette called "You Know How to Love Me," beginning a lifelong love affair with Phyllis Hyman.

Sometime in the early '90s, I found that I'd begun liking fewer and fewer of the top Billboard titles until finally I recognized practically none. Ultimately I wound up a devotee of Grown Folks' music, largely smooth- jazz vocalists and instrumentalists. Some of the young'uns today consistently act like they got some musical sense: India.Arie, Chanté Moore, John Legend, Corinne Bailey Rae, Melinda Doolittle. And Janet Jackson. And despite everything, evenWhitney Houston, too. But especially India.Arie.

At this point in my life, the music's gotta seriously come right or not at all.

  • Mya: Why Not So Successful?

    Nov 1 2007, 10h39 por Di-chy

No doubt Mya is a highly talented artist. Not only does she have a strong yet cute voice, she is a great songwriter, as well as a trained dancer as you can see on some videos and live performances. So, it's only natural that Ms. Mya Harrison has been signed to a big record label (Interscope) since her debut 10 years ago and able to put a bunch of big-name producers behind the board for every album she has released.

But at the same time, she's not so commercially successful as fellow R&B beauties like Aaliyah, Beyonce, Ashanti and Ciara. I personally think Mya is several times better than Ciara as a singer, but for now Ciara gets much more airplay and sells much more CDs than Mya does. What's the problem?

Like the predecessor Moodring, Mya's new album Liberation is said to be produced by hit-making producers, such as Scott Storch, Jonathan "JR" Rotem, Bryan-Michael Cox, Tim & Bob and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. However, despite the several singles already released off of the album, it still keeps on being pushed back and has yet to get the final, conclusive release date.

It's simply because all the singles have been unsuccessful. It sounds somewhat tragic that even "Lock U Down," featuring Lil' Wayne and produced by Scott Storch, and "Walka Not a Talka," featuring Snoop Dogg and produced by Jonathan Rotem, were both totally flopped. In fact, multiplatinum-selling rappers and beatmakers are no helping for her problem.

I especially love her singing slow jams like "After the Rain" and "Can't Believe," and am unhappy with rumored ballad track "The Hills" shelved. But I also realize these kinds of song is not appropriate as the lead single from a pop album. Ironically, if Mya decides she no longer wants to be commercially, crossover-ly successful like Ciara, there will be a lot of ways she can survive. Better try to be another Chante Moore, seriously.
