• Special Albums - Indie Brazil

    Mar 30 2009, 0h01 por robertfjr

This is a space where I want to write about special albums I find on the internet. I usually spend a lot of time reading blogs. There are some fantastic blogs out there with free downloads. Here you go:

    1 - Fellini - Amor Louco

Third album by Fellini and the one that has the best quality of recording. It was released in 1989 and has gems such as "Chico Buarque Song","Amor Louco","LSD", ect. Well, for me all 12 tracks are just perfect. If anyone wishes to download it , go to:
    Fellini - Amor Louco
All four albums can be found in this fantastic Brazilian Blog

2 - Arte No Escuro - Arte No Escuro

Representing the efervescent Indie scene from Brasilia (Brazil's capital) which in the second half of the 80s brought innumerous bands to life, here is Arte no Escuro. You can download the whole album right here. They never released another album!!

    3 - Compilation Não São Paulo Vol.I

Seminal compilation of Brazilian Indie Rock from São Paulo released in 1986. All tracks are classic as Akira S & As Garotas Que Erraram - Sobre as Pernas and timeless Chance - "Samba do Morro" and "O Striptease de Madame X". It can be downloaded right here.

The volume II of the compilation is found HERE

    4 - Monokini - Mondo Topless

This gem of an album is not old. It was released in 2002. From beginning to end it encapsulates in a retro 60s eletronic style a sound that reminds of Stereolab, but as the samba and bossa are our invention, Mondo Topless is a great original work. It is impossible not to like it or not to dance with it. Indispensable! Download right HERE

    5 - Nau - Nau

Released in 1987, Vange Leonel and Beto Bigher got together to form this amazing band. Vange's voice is incredible and the hit single "Corpo Vadio" is hypnotizing. They never produced another album though unfortunately. To download go HERE.

    6 - Pelvs - Another Spot

Where can one find the most English of all the English Shoegaze bands? London? New York? Berlin? Tokyo? Nope! You find them in Rio de Janeiro and their name is Pelvs. I have to admit that when I first listened to Peter Greenaway's Surf their first disk back in 1998 or so, I could not admit they were Brazilian. Pelvs is the essential indie Brazilian band and all albums can be found right HERE

    7 - Casino - Casino EP

Another great band from midsummer madness with free tracks available. The EP can be downloaded right HERE as well as the first album. A must!

    8 - Picassos Falsos - Picassos Falsos

Another great band from Rio de Janeiro who produced a quite peculiar sound style mostly due to its vocalist. They recorded two albums in the 80s and the singleQuadrinhos became an instant success. For downloading both 80s albums, here you GO

    Why we chose:

Terry Lynn - What isn’t there to say about Terry Lynn? She’s been around the music scene for decades, and always helps out where she can. For several years she hosted an open mic night, and even though she bounces from venue to venue she always pulls through with one of the most successful open mics in all of South West Florida. It is an honor to be able to return the favor to her and place one of her songs in our show. I chose to showcase her music, because she spends so much of her time showcasing others’ music.

Day - Thank you for the most well put together press kit I’ve ever been handed in well over 10 years of working in media. This puppy came with 2 cds, 1 single promo song, 2 8×10 glossy photos, a 2 page bio write up, credentials from some who’s who of independent music, and a logo embossed bright orange folder. Their music backs their presentation as well. Corey, thank you for running out to your car at 2 in the morning to get me the kit.

In Violent Sleep - Raquel’s music rocks. This song was the random cookie found when going through the artist submission forms online. I think she might be local to David or myself, and I’ll have to keep an eye out for her band playing in a town near me. Do yourself a favor and keep an eye out for her band playing in a town near you too.

Mr. Bella - Sometimes I get confused if we state why we choose the featured artist that we choose or not. I’m going to get in the habit of telling you, because if you just spent an hour listening to the episode to catch them, you deserve to know. And in Tampa, the band that promotes the hardest award goes to, Mr. Bella. Easy enough on why we’d choose them, they work their ass off promoting themselves. We are just here to help.

    Noted Links (Bizarrely loaded edition):

Earth Stood Still - Listener Question & August 4th Cd Release

We couldn’t get an Earth Stood Still song into this episode, since it didn’t fit the motif, but we were able to get them to ask David a question. Why let them stand out in this way? Simple, they have a new Cd that came out last week. Go to their website and give some of the music a listen. If you do that for me, then in a month from now when I say brand new music from Earth Stood Still, you’ll say, “It’s not new, I heard that last month.”

  • IR: The SoCal Sessions #14 - Well... Slap My Ass and Call Me Catorce

    Jul 16 2007, 5h17 por Discochuck

Episode fourteen receives a Bitter:Sweet slap and enters the world on an electronic wave of bossa nova followed by a live Jazz Bakery performance by sweltering vocalist, Sara Gazarek.

Leo from the TLP show interviews rockin' Florida artists Tailgunner Joe & The Earls of Slander, followed up with the Red Elvises belting out a fifties sounding romp about a devil woman on their ridiculously large Siberian guitars... very fun stuff.

Resident house band for the dead and damned, Serenading the Dead brings us their style of burlesque/vaudville music with a Zeppelin-esque classic that slides into Chance's 'Time Travel', a beautiful foray into headphone polished sound, perfect for a night of self-reflection into the past or possibly even the future (with the right spirits in hand).

Oliver Future arrives from Austin, capturing the feeling of being transplanted to LA, with the bouncing 'Happiness Machine'. We join up again with Yellow Thunder Woman and Robert Davey of the Bastard Fairies, listening to their Venomous Tale of deception, neccesity and love. The mid-July block party ends with Jubilee from the Willowz, definitely best heard while watching the Toben Seymour video filmed in LA... a light show putting the old Lazerium and Disney shows to shame.

The session ends with Ben Brooks & The Anger peforming 'Bend', a multi-layered demo that immediately captured our attention. We hope you enjoy these great songs and we will see you soon for a friends of the family type segment.

    Adios los Bastardos.
