At 10 February 1999 televised annual music awards ceremony, SHOW TV, at which he was to be named Musician of the Year, he spoke out about his 'Kurdish' background and said that he wanted to produce music in his native Kurdish as naturally as he does in Turkish. He announced that he had recorded a song in Kurdish (Karwan, released on the Hoşçakalın Gözüm album in 2001) and intended to produce a video to accompany it. At this event he was attacked by some Turkish singers like Serdar Ortac, Ebru Gundes and many other singers because of his stance on the use of Kurdish. Kaya went to France in June 1999 escaping various charges arising from his political views. He died of a heart attack in Paris in 2000, at the age of 43.

Bir gün Kâni Karaca dinlerken bir arkadaşım duyup gelmiş yanıma. Birden şöyle dedi "Yahu sen çağdaş müzikler dinlerdin hep. neden bunu dinliyosun ki?"

İçimde bir hayli yarum yapmak geçti fakat sadece "Sesini sevdim işte." diyebildim. O an demek istediklerimi buraya fışkırtayım bari.

Ulan çağdaş müzik ne demek ki? Müzik müziktir. Önceden yapılmışları ve yeni yapılmışları vardır bunlar da sadece kayıt yılına göre bizim (yani iyi müzik dinleyicileri) için önem arz eder. 1975 de kaydeilmiş bir Cem Karaca albumu çağdaş değil diye dinlenmicek mi?
Müzikbir değerdir. Her ritim ve ezgi sevenleri ve dinleyenleri ile vardır. Her müzik vardır ve dinlenebilir. Afrikalı bir kabilenin sadece davul kullanılarak yapılmış müziğini de dinlerim, Kâni Karaca gibi sufi tarzları da, Melodic Death Metali de dinlerim, eğer seversem. di mi ama? :)
Zaten şimdiye kadar (sadece last.fm istetistiklerine göre) 1000 den fazla farklı sanatçı/grubu dinlemişim.
