  • Charts - 6/4-13/4/08

    Abr 14 2008, 22h21 por Kapitankraut

Looking at the tag cloud, this is the week my charts went to Cuba. Nothing wrong with that at all, not by a long margin.

    9. Bongo Maffin
I've already mentioned my great enjoyment of these kwaito performers, and if anything they're better the second time round. I must get my hands on more kwaito when I'm back from overseas - anything with rapped vocals in pretty much every South African language has to be worth it.

    9. Los Fakires
As nearly as I can explain it, this is the sort of music that the Buena Vista Social Club project was going for, with the key difference being that this band played together for years and years. That same lovely languid vibe is there, along with the feeling that any of the musicians in question could absolutely slay all comers on their chosen instruments.

    7. Iced Earth
Call them overrated (I frequently do), call them hit-and-miss (likewise), but when Iced Earth are good, they're very good. This position is due to their album "The Glorious Burden", which is insanely jingoistic in its lyrical content, but just comes out very well when performed.

    7. Pedro Luis Ferrer
A performer of Cuban changui music. Stop me if I'm wrong, but changui is kind of the ancestor to son. Son being the style that everyone associates with Cuba. Ferrer's songs are all simple - deceptively so, I shouldn't wonder - but remarkably well-performed and just sound like summer, every second of them.

    6. Los Compadres
Everyone knows Compay Segundo, right? Well, this was the band which caused him to have that famous nickname ("Compadre Segundo" = the second voice in the band). Thus, one can expect some brilliant early renditions of Compay's hits in here - and this duo doesn't disappoint.

    5. Ñico Saquito
More of this wonderful early son stuff. It's almost impossible to pick favourites between Ferrer and Saquito, so I'd happily listen to both.

    4. Celia Cruz
The Queen of Salsa, famous the world over for the cry of "Azucar!". This position is courtesy of a large greatest-hits and also her final album. Of the two, the final album is a slightly more consistent listen - she was dying at the time it was recorded, mind you. Weirdly, though, I can't claim to have been entirely swayed by Celia on first listen.

    3. Napalm Death
From Cuba, back to the world of metal, in this case the pioneers of grindcore. I gave their two most recent albums a listen, which may well have been missing the point, and they were moderately impressive. I know I'm probably coming into it backwards, but if I'm after the kind of brutal onslaught style of metal, there are bands following ND's footsteps that I think I prefer.

    2. Iron Maiden
There really isn't much I can say about Iron Maiden other than that I truly enjoy everything of theirs I've heard. One of my favourite bands in any style of music.

    1. Annett Louisan
I promised myself I'd get her studio work after her live album impressed me so much, and if anything the studio work is marginally better. Definitely one of the finds of the year, this girl. Seriously sweet voice (although possibly not to everyone's tastes), brilliant backing band and very clever lyrics.

  • Elza! Elza! Elza! now on-demand streamable

    Set 10 2007, 15h04 por talking_animal

Last year I was in Delft, at Plexus, the really good record store there, and the proprietor pulled out a copy of Vivo Feliz from some pile on some table, puts it on the PA system, and floors me.

Everyone knows Elza Soares, right? For the US listener, if she or he knows Elza at all, she is one of those 1970s Brazilian singers who made a number of funky samba records then sort of disappeared from view as musical tastes changed. You can find her work on a couple of sampler discs, as well as greatest hits collections. If you read her bio here on last-fm you can find more about her sad life story.

Back to the story, I'm in Delft, and Elza comes over the PA, and it's just the most monster dance record possible. TocarRio de Janeiro features a bouncy bassline that sounds like Victor Wooten kidnapped by tropical booty activists, has this rap that sounds like it was run through the same vintage vocoder/compressor that turned Sheila E's rap from TocarIt's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night into something so over-the-top and ruthlessly erotic, a nutty saxophone solo, and in between, Elza chanting "I loff you," in a particularly villainous accent, as if she was about to whisk you home from an Ipanema nightclub, share with you a night of mind-altering passion, then saw you up into pieces with her giant ruby industrial laser. You could see it from the start, yet you loved it anyway.

If you like that song, maybe you'll like the French-language rap on the next song, or the Celia Cruz imitation on the one after that. ¡Azucar!

I bought "Vivo Feliz" immediately and took it home and loved it and cherished it. And now the entire album is available on last.fm's on-demand streamable service. Go and listen.

    Sourcing my library...

(I’m only scratching the surface really, since I have between 6k-7k songs on my iPod and 35k on a separate hard drive that I don’t even want to look at...)

But anyway, sourcing my library… I have several tags that are nation-specific. I didn’t tag stuff US, UK, or any other (primarily) English-speaking country (yet), but here are my favorite acts/albums by country:

ibiza – My ibiza tag is pretty voluminous, so I won’t go there. I did go to ibiza a few years back, and as seen on my dashboard, I love the chillout, cafe del mar-type music.

As far as world music goes, my favorite artist is Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. He passed the year I moved to Hawaii, and his life still is much celebrated over there.

I seem to listen to a lot of DJ-type music from germany:

house DJ – Timo Maas (I even gave him a tag: maas)
trance DJ – Paul van Dyk (tag: pvd)
Honorable mention, spanish guitar - Ottmar Liebert

and germany is also the birthplace of one of my favorite classical composers - Johann Sebastian Bach.

spain – Living in spain got me way into the DJ culture and this is why some people I meet, that go to my Myspace page, or here, say I listen to weird music – It’s not weird, it’s eclectic! Or so my eclecto-meter says...

trance, dance, house, chillout DJ – DJ Sammy
latin pop, electronica, new wave – Mecano

Also, those Gregorian chant-ers, The Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo De Silos are from spain.

netherlands - Another laid-back country where a lot of different types of music originate (but mostly trance, in my library)

trance DJ - DJ Tiësto (tag: tiësto)
trance DJ - Armin van Buuren (tag: avb).

brazil – Somehow related bossa nova artists Bebel Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto (Bebel is the daughter of, and Astrud was a wife of João Gilberto), however, Astrud is not Bebel’s mom… I think. Anyway, both are often remixed by Washington D.C. lounge DJ’s Thievery Corporation.
