Cecelia Peniston nasceu em Dayton, Ohio e mudou para Phoenix, Arizona aos nove anos. Estudou em Trevor Browne em Phoenix e mais tarde fez exames de beleza onde cresceu senod chamada de “Miss Black Arizona” em 1989. Começou sua carreira com música em 1990 que asisnou contraro com A&M Records e iniciou cantando em uma banda de rap “Overweight Pooch’s” em 1991 com o single “I Like It”.

Ela foi descoberta por um famoso DJ Manny Lehman que lançou seu primeiro álbum “Finally” em 1992. O álbum lançado pela A&M Records vendeu três milhões de cópias pelo mundo. Seu primeiro single, “Finally” alcançou a primeira posição e o hit número 2 nos Estados Unidos. “Finally” foi usado em um filme Australiano que chama “Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the desert” (Priscilla A rainha do Deserto).
