Catharsis was an influential American hardcore band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina that was active from 1994 to 2002. They were known for writing extremely lengthy songs (sometimes broken into multiple parts) with complex title names and unusual time signatures. Catharsis innovated and influenced hardcore worldwide with its great music and political ativism through Crimethinc collective. Through the years Catharsis has acquired a highly devoted group of fans in DIY hardcore scene all over the world, reaching status of cult band.
History
Catharsis was formed in 1994 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. After a couple of releases, vocalist and studio guitarist Brian D began releasing the band’s albums through the anarchist decentralized collective Crimethinc., with which he was heavily involved. Several members of the band went on to join or form other notable bands such as Zegota, Paint It Black, Requiem, 3 Inches Of Blood, Trial, Undying, and Walls of Jericho.
Influences
Catharsis took appreciable influence from Integrity, Neurosis, His Hero Is Gone, Breakdown, Deadguy, Nausea, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and black metal. They also recorded a reggae song, reflecting the singer’s appreciation for Peter Tosh. The Passion album takes samples from Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man.
