  • Laura Nyro - NEW YORK TENDABERRY. My Review.

    Set 12 2009, 0h57 por Crustclock

Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry

    Released: September, 1969
    Genre: Pop, Jazz-Pop, Soul
    Label: Columbia
    Producer: Laura Nyro, Roy Halee

For a while I considered Laura Nyro to be simply 'alright'. I thought the first three songs on Eli were what she did best; the more introspective numbers, such as ‘TocarPoverty Train’ bored me with their minimal accompaniment and slow movement. I was, however, interested enough to try the next most popular album in her discography: ‘New York Tendaberry'. I can't imagine, given how it is now one of my favourite albums of all time, how I could have listened to it for so long and been largely unimpressed - thought it too dull and sparse - but it wasn't love at first note. I think I was searching for the optimistic pop exuberance of my then-favourites from Eli, 'TocarSweet Blindness' and 'TocarLu'. I was left unaffected by the emotion and soul on those melancholy but beautiful tracks - impatient as I was for something immediate and uplifting. I found it a chore to sit through tracks like 'TocarYou Don't Love Me When I Cry' and 'TocarSweet Lovin' Baby'. I was, however, immediately struck by the soul and energy of the excellent and heartwarming 'TocarTime and Love', and most of the time I must have barely listened to the preceding tracks - paying attention only when it's opening chords kicked in.

For some reason, my realisation of her brilliance came in a very sudden way. I put this down to the fact that I had recently begun listening to music at music higher volumes, wearing headphones. I decided to give Tendaberry a play from beginning to end - to give those neglected tracks another chance to impress me.

The album's frequent contrast between the hushed and intimate, and impassioned, heavy piano chords often irritated me, as it meant I could not keep a consistent volume level, but after hearing the songs in this way, I was immediately gripped by the symbiotic control she had of her voice and her piano. To see the chords written down in minims and crotchets does no justice to the incredible deliberation of her playing. On the epic 'TocarCaptain for Dark Mornings', her voice soars, plummets and rises in a gentle, sweet whisper, while her playing slows to a crawl. Such sharp fluctuations in volume speed and dynamics are tricky to replicate and execute, but on her records these nuances sound utterly natural and effortless.

I don’t pretend to know what the lyrics meant to Nyro herself. With lines like “mama open up the room lock/ sip sip/ I'm going to the moon dock” or “people and the landlords shine/down and gay wine /in the doom swept the band away”, one can only presume their exact meaning is strictly personal. The lyrics lay images and emotions down like an artist’s hues, and with a poet’s tact. Even the ostensibly straightforward ‘TocarTime and Love’, which delivers the heartwarming message “nothing cures like time and love”, might be less unambiguous when compared with ‘TocarYou Don't Love Me When I Cry’s heartbreaking lyrics, which cast doubt on this message; the exuberant imperative, “don't let the devil fool you/ here comes a dove”, sounds more like futile self-deception. Idealistic love and irresistible temptation is described; “the devil is sweet”, “I'll live and die and rise with my captain”, but as is what remains after. The titular city is also a lyrical theme. The line “sidewalk and pigeon/ you look like a city/ but you feel like a religion to me” gives an idea of her attachment to her hometown, the “gutter in stacks”.

New York Tendaberry is a song cycle if no other album is. I can listen to 'TocarTime and Love' alone, but something about the slowly-built continuation from the lyrically enigmatic 'TocarGibsom Street' feels completely natural. She can do so much with nothing but her voice and the piano that it's easy to overlook how much the production lends to the music. The tracks are all similar in their economical use of additional instruments. The sudden surges and abrupt exits of the strings on 'TocarSweet Lovin' Baby' tastefully accentuate the impassioned vocals without competing with them, and 'TocarCaptain Saint Lucifer' (my favourite Nyro track of all time) is heightened at its chorus by a full ensemble to similarly gorgeous effect - the illustrative drum hits after "buckles off a poverty drum", followed by the brass stabs punctuating "tell Gabriel" are pure magic. 'TocarNew York Tendaberry' was once my least favourite Nyro track, but I now think that it sets the perfect tone for the final track. This is not an album that should end on some big, brassy singalong.

After my realisation, I discovered some wonderful tracks on Eli and the Thirteenth Confession which I had overlooked – ‘TocarThe Confession’, ‘TocarTimer’, ‘Eli's Comin’’. I still like those fun, catchy tunes she does, but they are no longer what I love about her music. It's odd; her influence and significance in popular music, once you've heard her, is blindingly obvious - to contemporaries such as Carole King and Joni Mitchell, as well as artists like Steely Dan and Todd Rundgren - yet she's almost forgotten in the Rolling Stone (and ilk) rock/pop canon.

Ah well. Those cunts don't deserve her.

So I'm fairly bored, and was wondering which female artists had the most plays. I already knew that Britney Spears had the highest play count, but just thought it may be interesting to see the rest. I'm updating figures where possible, the top twenty are checked fairly often as they're most likely to change, but I try to check the rest too.

Jessica Paris is one of those artists with an experienced sound. For many she might be a new name, and indeed she doesn't have a long list of releases on her name, but her experience in both life and music has been vast and on "Tempting The Gods" she sounds like a seasoned veteran musician. With stellar vocal performances and strong song arrangements, Jessica Paris is a spotlight artists for the years to come.

With the strong opener New Orleans, Paris sets a very high standard. The poppy, though also breathy and folky, opener is full of life and has a certain catchiness to it. With vocals that are perfect for this folk & roll style, Jessica Paris immediately claims her position as very talented and, most likely, soon to be discovered new artist. The slightly moodier Medals is an interesting change compared to the opener. And while it might not be as radio-friendly, the song's quality is no less. The song can lean on a pretty strong arrangement and sound build-up and the passion that Paris puts in the song can only be applauded.

The obvious radio single candidate, Socrates & The Virgin Mary is perhaps one of the best songs on "Tempting The Gods". Central, again, is Paris' vocal performance, which provides that seasoned sound. Singers like Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell & Carole King in the past had seasoned vocals and a signature sound. Jessica Paris could be the heir to their throne.

The Whore, a song with a provocative title, is actually one of the more upbeat ones on the album. Paris finds herself in a postition where she can musically fill the gap between the singer/songwriter sound from the seventies and the current one. She's definitely on par with Tracy Chapman, of whom she sometimes reminds me, especially in this song. And with Nothing To Say, a more paced down, folky approach shows the versatility and vast capabilities of this talented musician. After that she continues with the more poppy Sugar Cane which could be an underrated song by many. Listen upon listen I keep discovering little new things in the song. Subtle vocal changes, interaction between the lyrics and the intensity of performance and an overall stellar vocal presence give this song a right to be praised.

Missing July is another song with a lot of radio potential. The uptempo and catchy rhythm, combined with Paris' lush & soulful vocals give the song a very passionate and forthgoing sound that is easy to catch on to. And while Half Moon might not be most complex or sophisticated song on the album, it is very much my favorite. Once again I can make the comparison with Tracy Chapman, but it's also definitely very much Jessica Paris. The acoustic, folky song has a very intimate and honest, stripped down character. It's the pure essence of the music that you hear and Paris makes it come across fully.

The next song is a collaboration with Sal DiPasquale and has a nice ring to it. The urban approach in the song is peculiar at first, but the more I listen to it, the more I get used to it and the more I can get into it. It's not really my cup of tea, but it shows Paris willingness to branch out and try new things. Her strong vocals mix well with the rest of the arrangement.

The summery, poppy Insanity has a bit of a late 70s/early 80s feel to it, musically, but what stands out most is the wonderful vocal presence by Jessica Paris. Everything clicks and with this abnormally strong song, she ends "Tempting The Gods" on a very, very strong note.

With "Tempting The Gods", Jessica Paris made sure that the music community has something else to look forward to, namely her follow up release. "Tempting The Gods" shows a high standard that raises expectations for Paris' future. But for now, she can be very proud and very happy with the album she delivered.

    1. What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
    TocarSweet About Me

    2. What is your favorite album by 2?
By now, she's only got 1: This Is The Life, but it will be hard for her to make one that will be better.

    3. What is your favorite lyric that 1 has sung?
I cannot answer this question. It made me realize that I don't love her songs for her lyrics somehow, because I can't remember any... Strange, why is it on the number 1 position?

    4. How many times have you seen 11 live?
    Not in real life... :-(

    5. What is your favorite song by 7?
    TocarNew Kid in Town

    6. What is a good memory you have involving 20?
None particularly, just the the moments when I'm enjoying the music, I think.

    7. Is there a song by 3 that makes you sad?
If I have to name one, then I will say 'Les Boys'. But that's more because it's a bit of a shame for Dire Straits to have ever record this song.

    8. What is your favorite song by 9?
No doubt about that one: Forgotten!!!!!!

    9. How did you get into 22?
By watching the movie 'Into the Wild'. Eddie Vedder wrote and performed the soundtrack. I love the songs and the theme of the songs and the movie.

    10. What was the first song you heard by 21?
That's a long time ago, but there's a great chance that that will be Another Brick In The Wall (Part II). I heard that song in the charts of all-time-best-songs when I was young.

    11. What is your favorite song by 4?
    Hurt So Bad, great voice!

    12. How many times have you seen 10 live?
    Only on DVD... :-D

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 13?
I think that will be the moment when I first saw Amy performing TocarYou Know I'm No Good. It was when I just settled in my new house. I got no tv, so I had to view the rebroadcasts on internet on my computerscreen, which I had put on my table...

    14. Is there a song by 23 that makes you sad?
No, music most of the time doesn't make me sad.

    15. What is your favorite album by 15?
Well, I'm not really into her albums. I just got a lot of songs of her, which I like, but I don't know which album it belongs to. Maybe I should get her albums! :-)

    16. What is your favorite lyric that 19 have sung?
Well, it's not sung by him, but it's written by him. Performed by Judas in the 'Jesus Christ Superstar' movie in 1973. The song is called TocarHeaven on Their Minds and in this song Judas makes clear why he think's about Jesus the way he does and how it has come this far. It's really a phenomenal performance!

    17. What is your favorite song by 8?
It has always been Crawling Up A Hill, but I really like TocarShy Boy, TocarSpider's Web and TocarOn The Road Again too!

    18. What is your favorite song by 16?
Do I have to name only one? Well, I'll have to go for All My Loving then.

    19. How many times have you seen 5 live?
If they ever come to Holland I want to go there, but up until now, I have no succes...

    20. What is your favorite album by 12?
Why do these questions come up for the artists that only have one? Well, it's a hard choice, but I think I'll go for the Life's A Beach album. And since they broke up, this answer probably will never change! :-)

    21. What is a good memory you have involving 25?
No special moment, but her songs from the 90's always make me feel like a child again, when I heard those songs for the first time. Especially songs like TocarHero and TocarWithout You.

    22. What was the first song you heard by 18?
    TocarMercy

    23. What is your favorite album by 24?
    A Change Is Gonna Come.

    24. What was the first song you heard by 17?
I think that'll be TocarYou've Got a Friend, but it can also be
Tocar(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman. But when I first heard her when my father listened to her album (I must have been very young) then it probably was the first track of the Tapestry album: TocarI Feel the Earth Move. In short: I don't know!!! :-D

    25. What is your favorite lyric that 14 have sung?
In some way this question is about artists which I don't love because of their lyrics, but just for the music. I love Wishbone Ash's guitars, so I'll go for the lyrics sung by the guitar in TocarThrow Down The Sword.
