Nous avions de très bon billet pour le spectacle programme double de Cesaria Evora et Seu Jorge c'était pour le 2 juillet 2007 à la Place des arts pendant le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Attention le programme à changé il y a eu la cancellation de Seu Jorge. Ce qui est frustrant c'est que les producteurs, Spectra, n'ont pas annoncés cette modification. Le spectacle aura toujours lieu mais uniquement avec Cesaria Evora.

De notre côté on c'est fait rembourser nos billets étant des fans de Seu Jorge, c'est dommage. Nous allons donc nous rabattre sur Carlinhos Brown histoire de se remémorer les bons moments du Carnaval de Bahia. Haaaa le Brézil !

Uno de los músicos brasileros cuya personalidad más me ha impactado es Antonio Carlos Santos de Freitas, conocido como Carlinhos Brown (en honor a James Brown). Especialmente me ha impactado su faceta solidaria, apoyando a los niños de su barriada...

Wow, she is gorgeous. First you fall in love with her music, then with her voice, then with her beauty, then... what she represents.

I just copied and pasted - sure it is not a good practice, but I did not know how to do it best! - Daniela Mercury's from Wikipedia into the lastfm wiki page. I already could perceive how special she is by listening in her music, but after a quick research in Wikipedia and her personal web page, I realised that she is something close to a Diva or God for Brazilian music as well as for Carnival.

I ran into her music in at a Fnac store in Lisbon in Christmas 2004-2005 by guessing that the album Carnaval Electrónico (featuring Carlinhos Brown, super popular at that time in my country Spain)would be of my pleasure. And I loved it! I had finally managed to make a step forward in music from Brasil by getting to know more stuff from that country other than the typical bossa nova and samba references which I also enjoy but have been sometimes a barrier to reach new artists (Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jorge Ben, etc.) - thanks to last.fm, because it manages to bring such barrier down-.

One of these simple things that happenned the other day. I realised that I was stuck in discovering new music from Brasil, but now with lastfm that is no excuse, so I browsed for Daniela Mercury and found out all what I just said, plus managed to download her album "Sou de qualquer lugar" from www.legalsounds.com - again, why do record companies not get into these move: download a lot more, but cheap, instead of consuming less, and expensive? (the site is russian, where copyright laws are simply not defined) -. Again, I loved it. My favourite song of the album: Baiana havaneira

My recommended songs in Electronic Carnival album are the popular tracks: Maimbe Danda and Quero Ver O Mundo Sambar.

Ben, it is now your turn to let me discover more about Brazilian music.

I love Daniela because she is one of the few alive Brazilian artists that I know of which keep on making new music. Carlinhos would be the other one.

As I've mentioned before, I'm a pretty big Brazilian music fan, though generally a novice...I love the stuff, and between living in New York and working frequently in Maimi I have the opportunity to sample quite a bit and see a number of Brazilian bands and artists live...but I'm often limited to what's been released here in the U.S. or to artists that make it over here to perform...

Like last night, I saw Lenine at Joe's Pub, a wonderful intimate venue (150 people capacity) in lower Manhattan...he's come highly reccomended to me by Brazilian and American friends whose taste I truly trust. I have to say that Lenine wasn't my favorite - he's got a wonderful voice, and some really amazing songs, but too often the set veered off into 70's-style prog rock noodling which just isn't my thing...Lenine's voice is on a par with Seu Jorge's but I much prefer the later's musical style and band. But people really really love this guy (as evidenced by all the beautiful women - and some guys too - in total rapture at the show last night)...what's the deal/appeal?

More importantly, I'm looking for suggestions...

So I'm already into the music of many of the greats: Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Baden Powell, Jorge Ben, Astrud Gilberto, Milton Nascimento, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Carlinhos Brown, Tom Ze. And I know some of the contemporary stuff - like Otto, Fernanda Porto, DJ Marky, DJ Patife, DJ Dolores, DJ Marlboro, CSS, Nacao Zumbi, Cibelle, Bebel Gilberto, BossaCucaNova, O Rappa, plus some of the hip hop like Marcelo D2, bnegao...And in the next couple of months Joe's Pub has a great series of shows that I'll check out, including Karina Zeviani, Choro Ensemble with guest Ted Falcon, Otto, Cibelle, Curumin, and Tetine.

But I want to know more...anyone out there with some recommendations for the best newest Brazilian music to check out...I'm open-ears for all styles and types though I'm really interested in new, innovative sounds and the hottest tracks, albums, artists on an underground level there (no pop charts please) - thanks!
