Apparently this album has the magical power to confuse hardcore Radiohead fans so much that they have to come here and make us laugh

I don't normally like to bicker with people about opinions on music and even less often do I go to someone's profile and look at their charts, but I can't help but smile in response to seeing someone who has Radiohead, Oasis, The Strokes and The Beatles among their top artists calling Trout Mask Replica "overhyped." Kid A may well be the embodiment of "overhyped" across all art forms. The Strokes were (are? I don't know or care if they're still active) an inoffensive midtempo guitar rock band inexplicably heralded as "the new Velvet Underground" by the music press. Oasis is (was? Like everyone else in the world outside of the UK I ceased giving a shit about the Gallagher brothers about 19 years ago) a totally average pop band that people seemed to think were "the new Beatles" because they were from the UK; guess they missed out on the whole "they don't have any good albums" aspect. I love the Beatles, but I can't take a shit without someone saying the Beatles did it smellier earlier.

Not really. A person who manages to contradict themselves in the space of two sentences is pretty impressive

"Most people in the 'entire world' have no idea who this strange beefheart person is" -- he's been on the cover of Rolling Stone and interviewed by David Letterman. Obscurity defined.

@Wegotlemons Hey man. With a weirdo album like this one it's probably for the better that you not read up on peoples opinions of it. Reading backstory spoils the meat of anything, ya know? If you dig this music then cool, and if not then that's cool too. I suggest if you don't "get it" at first but you're willing to let it play over and over to try and "understand" something about it. For me, that goes for all music I ever listen to. From the mainstream to the oddities. To me, that's what's cool about music and the self. You can listen to stuff for enjoyment, and you can listen to stuff for education. As you get deeper into music it becomes more of a history lesson. Things fall into place with eachother and styles reflect off one another til they jigsaw together through time. Just keep on listening to music and don't be afraid to mix the weird with the straight. Music is controlled sound. Unless it's not, then it's Merzbow.

I don't think all TMR fans feel the same way about it. It's very open to interpretation. Beefheart invented his very own musical language during the intense period when he wrote and the band practice and recorded the album (read the album's background history on the internet, it's insane stuff). His music directly reflects the process of thoughts and emotions in his head: the band strictly sticks to the musical score (you might not believe this but the band practiced what they play on the album for 9 months. they played it EXACTLY the same way everytime) while Beefheart freely sings and plays reed over the instrumentals. If you want to get a grip on the music, focus on the drums. The drummer dude is the person who translated Beefheart's improvised compositions on the piano to written musical score for rock band. The drum rhythms play a very big role on the album... keep in mind that the album was intended to sound exactly as it is. If it grows on you, it will be very rewarding.

Feel free to discuss. If you're wondering why or how some people like this album so much, just ask. If you already know it's a shitty album, goodbye and have a nice day.

You're haven't discussed anything yet. Radiohead. Calling the album "shit" doesn't count as discussion my friend. Radiohead.

At least we don't go to Radiohead's page and call their fans "strange obsessive people" or "sad pretentious fags who don't know shit about music but think they do". Go worship Radiohead dude, at least they're famous in the 'entire world' :D

@Rezzo64 Most people in the 'entire world' have no idea who this strange beefheart person is, and how he attracts strange obsessive people to worshipping him.

@Wegotlemons I have a friend who is a hardcore Green Day fan and thinks Radiohead are unlistenable. He doesn't troll Radiohead's last.fm page though. I like how he's not a pathetic douche.

Obviously everybody in the entire world is pretending to like it. Those who don't like it: they aren't in on the joke. When you show this to your friend and your neighbour and they think it's crap, it's because they are unaware of the joke and therefore immediately dislike it. You're not in on the joke either. That's too bad. Everyone is laughing at you Wegotlemons, and it's because you're doing a terrible job trolling
