  • Top 20 - NOVEMBER 2008

    Nov 3 2008, 21h29 por Tony031R

November, and this time I'm definitelly not gonna get all romantic over it and I'm gonna cut to the point. A big shout to everyone who was there at Can You SUBstep?, to Yazee.ro, supporting us, trusting us with the bookings and sharing our point of view regarding our events concept and last but not least Whistla and the Sub.FM crew. Also my personal "thank you" goes to everyone out there (few or many) who understood what this event was about and who support our promoting concept.

Unfortunately, the current state of affairs on the Bucharestian scene, translating, in my opinion, into forced promoting of this genre, proved to me again that in in Romania trends and tendencies seem to have a bigger priority that the music itself. However, the good (or bad) part is that I will stick to c0p's words "don't give the people what they want, give the people what they need, it's all about education and balance" and I will not submit any of Dubstep.ro promoting activities to the idea of an event based on general hype. I can assure you there are many artists out there, more or less popular, whose sounds don't break the commercial barrier. Those artists will be present sooner or later at Dubstep.ro events. What I can tell you for now is that there's gonna be a Dubstep.ro 1 Year Anniversary party, probably somewhere in December and that the Can You Step partnership with Yazee is most likely to be continued. Keep an eye on two guys out there: DJ Chef and Phaeleh. Also be sure to check Wascal this weekend at Irie Youth Dubstep Party in Mash-Up Club, Bucharest.

The great thing about this month is that late autumn, as always, is the start for new releases, studio work, tours, gigs and so on. I managed to get my hands on tons of new releases, so brand new selection for those who will be present at Bass Step in X-Cave, Galati this friday. Also keep an eye on future gigs. Constanta, Iasi and Hai Karate! in Expirat, Bucharest soon...

Until then, this month's selection as it follows:

  • Top 50 Review

    Jan 21 2008, 19h35 por Darsa

I was supposed to this a long time ago. Here it ya'll.

    50.Linkin Park
Now, it's either people will attack me for having the "horrible" LP in my charts, or they will be happy they're at the bottom. I can say while I believe they'll disappear soon, I will always like them. Infact, I miss listening to them a bit, always brings me back. Oh, and after MTM their songs don't sound the same
    Favourite Song:Papercut

    49.Gym Class Heroes
I still wonder why I didn't get another album yet. For now, GCH offered me a breathe of fresh air from gangsta rap/complex rap. Nice, catchy and better than this G-Rap stuff.
    Favourite Song:TocarShoot Down the Stars

    48.Shuvel
How long can I listen to one album? They're not bad, I'm just bored at the moment. Still, I never wasted time listening to them. I really hope a new album will come out.
    Favourite Song:Jump In

    47.Nappy Roots
When I say I like Hip-Hop, some may think I'm all on the lyrics, other will think I'm all Gangstaz-N-Pimpz. Well, I like Hip-Hop for what it is. Nappy Roots offer me a country-influinced sound to calm down. Catchy, fun and unique. Their "Wooden Leather" is a progression from the debut by the way.
    Favourite Song:War/Peace

    46.Fear Factory
Somebody should slap me for not getting more albums from these guys. Maybe because I'm disappointed with "Archetype". Still, I believe I'm getting into Industrial Metal.
    Favourite Song:TocarLinchpin

    45.Sweatshop Union
They'll keep falling down until a new album will come out. Now, the question is:Do I want them in my charts? Of course, they got me to Underground Rap.
Favourite Song:Never Enough (Money Loves Me)

    44.Betzefer
Arghh, why only 1 album? Go write another one. Still, I can see them climbing. I still didn't really catch some songs from their album.
    Favourite Song:Black Inside

    43.Rage Against the Machine
I hardly listen to them anymore... And I still need to check out the first. However, everytime I hear a RATM song I will remember why I love them so much
    Favourite Song:TocarDown Rodeo

    42.Atmosphere
I guess I should give "Seven's Travels" another chance... Or maybe I'm more satisfied with Brother Ali.
Favourite Song:Smart Went Crazy (The Beauty Pill)

    41.Three Days Grace
I tend to enjoy nice catchy rock, but if it doesn't hit me hard there's no reason for it to be in the Top 50. Still, I give them credit for "Overrated".
    Favourite Song:TocarOverrated

    40.GZA/Genius
Whoa, I forgot about him. I will check the project with Muggs to see if there's a reason to give him another chance.
    Favourite Song:TocarVictim

    39.Papa Roach
I'm suprised. Papa Roach will be a childhood artist for me, and I still enjoy their music and I still think "The Paramour Sessions" is their best effort since "Lovehatetragedy" which is itself a great one. I plan to check out their very first one, Old Friends... I wonder if it's good.
    Favourite Song:TocarTime and Time Again

    38.Dead Celebrity Status
That's how it is when you got only one album. I had a good time though, but I'm bored for now.
    Favourite Song:Someone I Once Knew

    37.Rihanna
Hmm, I have this habit of checking an artist's one or two albums and than forgeting about them... I hate when it happens. I hope "A Girl Like Me" will be good, or she will disappear until the next album.
    Favourite Song:TocarQuestion Existing

    36.Adema
I wasn't really impressed with the debut, so I went off. Still, there's 2 more albums to check out with 2 different vocalists, I hope they're better.
    Favourite Song:TocarSo Fortunate

    35.Chamillionaire
His new album is one hell of a progression. "The Evening News" got an amazing music video. I guess Chamillionaire is one of the best rappers to hit the mainstream, and yes, there's more of him than "RYDEN DIRTAY!".
    Favourite Song:TocarThe Evening News

    34.Audioslave
I guess until I will not be lazy to download "Revelations" they will drop. Still, I tend to pick them up from time to time, a great band and I'm interested in other works of Chris Cornell.
    Favourite Song:TocarOut Of Exile

    33.50 Cent
Ha! Well, this is mainly because I listened to "Curtis" to review it (It's somewhere in my journal, check it out) and then I was listening to "The Massacre", and I've enjoyed it. I won't say 50 Cent is a great rapper, but I enjoy it from time to time.
    Favourite Song:TocarDisco Inferno

    32.Insane Clown Posse
"The Tempest" proves that Dr. Dre isn't such a good producer. The stars behind this group are the producers, and ICP's job is to-not-ruin-it. And they doo it good.
    Favourite Track:TocarHalls Of Illusions

    31.Crazy Town
Got a little bored of them. I still enjoy them, and my MP4 still contains alot of CXT songs. Infac, I heard a reunion is on and a new album might come out... I hope so.
    Favourite Song:TocarLollipop Porn

    30.Everlast
As long as the Rapper-Turned-Singer-Turned-Rapper stays in my top 50 I'm happy. His "Eat At Whitey's" didn't disappoint and I hope "Whitey Ford Sings The Blues" is even better.. If so, I'll put him in favourite artists soon.
    Favourite Song:2 Pieaces Of Drama

    29.Anthrax
I hardly listened to them... And they're in the 29th place? Whoa, I guess it's time to re-check out "State Of Europhia" and get other stuff. For now, I don't mind them here, I just need to focus on them more.
    Favourite Song:TocarI Am The Law

    28.DMX
I don't tend to listen to him a whole lot, but when I do I really enjoy it. One of the best rappers to hit the mainstream, I only one more album to finish my collection.
Favourite Song:TocarLord Give Me a Sign

    27.Beastie Boys
Again, I hardly listened to them lately. But the rest of the albums I need are all considered good (Hell, of their albums are considered good). Besides, my love for them grew after their debut album appeared in the newspaper's "Top 50 Debut Albums Of All Time".
    Favourite song:Paul Revere

    26.Dilated Peoples
At first, I hated scratches, I HATED IT!. Still, I checked out Dilated knowing this is what I get and now? Scratches rule. Of course, I also like Evidence's & Rakaa's lyrics & flow. Both are very talented and with Banana (Sorry, Babu) we got ourselves underground stars. I won't say they're groundbreaking, but the more Hip-Hop groups like them will come out the better. Oh, and I've been a fan of Dilated long ago, I hope the new album will come out.
    Favourite Song:TocarWar

    25.Kid Rock
Ok, I need to explain:I don't like the man behind the music, I only enjoy the music. There's something in it I can't resist. I just hope he will mature and stop with these sexsongs. Oh, and his new album sucks, don't waste your time on it, listen to "Cocky" or self-titled instead.
    Favourite Song:Jackson, Mississippi

    24.Zion I
I hardly listened to them lately, but I will never deny their talent. I hope more artists like them will see the light of the day.
    Favourite Song:TocarLuv

    23.Sage Francis
You know, I might go far and claim StrAnGE (Get it?) is one of the best thing ever happend to Hip-Hop. When I got "A Healthy Distrust" I didn't really like it. Then I checked out "Human The Death Dance" and was bored of it. Something inside of me, maybe because I saw his CD in a store made me give him another chance, and I'm glad I did. I still need to understand the meaning of the songs in "Human The Death Dance", but this guy got some sick rhymes. I will give "A Healthy Disturst" another chance and check out his mix albums & his debut, I hope I won't be disappointed.
Favourite Song:Black Out On White Night

    22.Korn
I listened fully to only 2 albums, but I get the impression Korn will be in my favourite artists soon, I need to listen closely to "Follow The Leader", since from what I heard it's a great one.
    Favourite Song:Korn

    21.Kanye West
It's just a matter of time till he falls. He's so high because of "Graduation". Far from being the best Hip-Hop album of the year, but I seem to enjoy it more than older efforts.
    Favourite Song:School Spirit

    .::Top20::.
Things get a little strange here

    20.Craig David
Already knew Craig David from a soundtrack, he's actually a pretty good singer. I was more impressed with his "The Story Goes..." album, now he has a new one and I still need to check out his 2nd one. Hope he rises up.
    Favourite Song:TocarWalking Away

    19.Capleton
Not much to say aside that I wasn't impressed with his new album. His full discography is laying somewhere, and I need to pick it up. He's the one who got me into reggea, and that's why my MP4 is full of his "Reign Of Fire" songs.
    Favourite Song:Never Share (Burn Dem(

    18.CunninLynguists
Only one album got them this high, a few listens to "Southernunderground" and I went off. I guess I should check out the new album or they will slowly fall.
    Favourite Song:TocarNothing to Give

    17.Urban Dance Squad
When I first checked them out, I expected another Ozomatli-I thought I will immidiatily get hooked on the corssover. Boy, I was wrong. When I got "Persona Non Grata" it took me time to even have an opinion! But I didn't stop, and I simply kept on giving them chances. Suddenly, I got used to it and even got used to Rudeboy's vocals, which is for me one of the best vocalists. I think the only thing standing in UDS' way to the top is Public Enemy.
Favourite Song:Tocar(Thru) The Gates of the Big Fruit

    16.Ozomatli
Whoa, I just talked about them. Unlike UDS, as soon as I heard Ozomatli I got hooked. Maybe because it's more poppish, or simply catchy, but Ozomatli are a special band. With latin roots, rappers, guitarists and more stuff Ozomatli is an amazing crossover band. There's still more material to check, and a live album. I hope they will rise up in my charts, since they're way too underrated.
    Favourite Song:TocarSaturday Night

    15.Brad Paisley
I think it's becoming a little disturbing. Reggea, RNB, 2 crossover bands and now country? Ye, Brad got me into country and he's so high because of only 2 albums. I wonder if the rest of his stuff are good.
    Favourite Song:TocarOnline

    14.Faith No More
I'm so happy they're in my top 20. Mike Patton is my favourite vocalist ever, and I never believed I'de like FNM so much. They deserve it, and along with more material to check out, I hope to see FNM rising up in the charts, since they suit in there with all the other crazy bands.
    Favourite Song:A Small Victory

    13.VilleBillies
One of the most unique bands I heard, the mix of rock/rap/country is done greatly on their debut. There's a new song in their MySpace and I hope a new album will come out. Even I hardly listen to their only album for now, I believe I will find myself listening to it again one of these days.
    Favourite Song:Rolling Stone

    12.Swollen Members
I really don't know what to say. They got me to Undergorund Hip-Hop, I can still remember how it happend. I only started to really love them after "Black Magic" and there's a new album in the works, but after "Black Magic" I wonder if it'll be more than a 3.5/5, but these are Swollen Members... So I expect more creepy rhymes and great beats. Damn, I feel like I need to say more, but no words cna describe them for me..
    Favourite Song:TocarPut Me On

    11.Brother Ali
I think he's the reason I stopped listening to Atmosphere. His new album was one of the best things of 2007, I never reallythought I'de listen to it so much. While I haven't been listening to it lately, I plan on giving his first album another go.
    Favourite Song:Letter From The Gouvernment

    10.Terry Scott Taylor
Whoa, I guess I've been overlistening to the Neverhood Soundtrack. While I'm a big fan of the game, I only checked the soundtrack after having some experience with music, so I got somewhat an objective view on it and I think it's amazing. So different, so strange, and always brings me back. I would like see more of TST's solo work, but it's hard to find it. Either way, the fact there's someone with TST in his top 10/20 shows the Neverhood is not dead.
Favourite Song:The Battle of Robot Bill

    9.Fall Out Boy
Arghh, sometimes I can't resist catchy music when it's done well. While it can be quite annoying when they get fans because Pete Wentz is sexy or something, I actually enjoy the music. Their new album, "Infinity On High" is a great one, a more "experiemental" effort if you ask me. The songs really differ, unlike the Cork Tree album, where all the songs sound the same.
    Favourite Song:TocarThriller

    8.Clawfinger
I didn't really know if checking them out was a good idea. I was already familier with the industrial-metal scene and I thought they would mean nothing to me. Well, Clawfinger has sometihng else-lyrics. While I'm not agree with their Anti-God/Religion songs, the rest is amazing. While the songs are quite simple, with this kind of vocalist and lyrics, they only need a catchy melody to catch your ear. From the albums I got:"Clawfinger" "Hate Yourself With Style" "A Whole Lot Of Nothing" & "Life Will Kill You", "A Whole Lot Of Nothing" is their best for now.
    Favourite Song:Right to Rape

    7.Uncle Kracker
Honestly, I don't kow what to say. I already heard Kracker on the "Osmosis Jones" soundtrack, but when I checked him out I simply fell in love with the music. While a little less original than Kid Rock, he's way more talented. I can't wait to buy his whole discography, and even more to "Happy Hour", though no one knows what's going on with it.
    Favourite Song:Break U Off

    6.Cypress Hill
I've come to the point where artists are way too good to describe. Their debut album is a masterpiece for me, a few more listens and it's a 5/5. Cypress is Gangsta Rap of a different sort, aside they worked with rockers their music tend to get stoned or very dark. They also ahve a sppanish album, made of older hits in spanish. By the way, DJ Muggs proves us Dre was never ahead of his time.
    Favourite Song:TocarHand on the Pump

    5.Jay-Z
I didn't listen to JZ recently, but while writing this I listened to him a bit and I understand why he's my number 1 rapper. Holding my favourite song from my favourite album, he must not get out of the top 10. I hope American Gangster is more "Reasonable Doubt" than "blueprint".
Favourite Song:What More Can I Say

    4.(hed) Planet Earth
Whoa, I hardly listened to them and they're still so high. Oh well, aside from some annoying Sexsongs these guys deserve to be one of my favourite bands. I don't seem to care about Insomnia sadly.
    Favourite Song:TocarBlackout

    3.Soilwork
Another band I harldy listen to for now. They got a new album out, and I got 2 albums to rate. You know, I feel like getting a little deeper into metal, so Soilwork gets another go.
    Favourite Song:Brickwalker

    2.Public Enemy
Public Enemy! One of the best things Hip-Hop ever knew. With Chuck D's golden flow, dope beats from The Bomb Squad these guys demand, and deserve respect. They also had a new album out, and I think it's a great one. I can see them taking the top spot since they got a large catalog for me to check out. By the way, when I was in America I bought 3 of their CD's, so here's
another reason to be so high.
    Favourite Song:Bring The Noise

    1.Corporate Avenger
Ah, Corporate Avenger. I hardly listen to them now, but their first album was amazing. While I really not with their message I can't deny their music so they turned to a guilty pleasure. Their 2nd album, "Born Again" was a huge disappointment. While the first was original Industrail Rock-Rap, "Born Again" is simply hardrock and that isn't so special, While I heard CA are back in the studio, unless they bring some rap & electronic back, or atleast give us more originality they won't be at the top. Besides, it seems that just around 50 tracks and Public Enemy also got 1000 plays. Now, do CA deserve the top 1 spot? Yup, but soon more artists will crawl up up and take the top-Either PE, UDS, Uncle Kracker or maybe even Ozomatli. Still, "Freedom Is A State Of Mind" is one of the best albums I ever heard.
    Favourite Song:Christians Murdered Indians

That's it for now, 'till next review.
