  • NME's "The top 100 greatest albums of the decade" and me [100-51]

    Nov 26 2009, 16h53 por leelaa

NME published a list of the top 100 albums of the start of this century along with a top 100 tracks one and now instead of just reading it, I decided to also do some thing with it.
My problem with NME lists is, that they're pretty narrow minded with their focus on mostly british and US music. But since this was the first list I came across, I'll use this one, starting with the places 100 till 51.

The top 100 greatest albums of the decade

Recently I was putting some tickets in the box I store all my tickets/flyers in and realised how tatty and faded they were becoming. This fact, combined with my appalling memory, has led me to keep a list of the gigs I've been to. In making that list, I thought I'd produce the following A-Z of bands I've seen to post on here.

This list comprises of all the bands I know I've seen, whether it be as headliners, supports or at a festival. It is not a definitive list; some bands I've seen more than once but don't know how many times and I'm sure there's plenty of bands I've missed. But hopefully I've not missed too many...

  • Changes in taste.

    Mai 6 2009, 10h57 por Cartman842

I've had a complete change in my taste of music. Bands I'd previously been in love with I find bland and repetitive. New bands have moved in and become more listened to than ever. Old favourites such as the Arctic Monkeys, Milburn, Foo Fighters, Ben Folds and The Libertines have disapeared from my playlist to be replaced by ska-core, ska-punk and other related genres. Sure my room is still plastered with Muse posters, but I havn't listened to an album or watched HARRP in months.

Sonic Boom Six, Streetlight Manifesto, The King Blues, Capdown, Random Hand, Operation Ivy among others are now what I'm listening to. It's much different from what I use to be in to.. but, it's fucking awesome.

'Be whoever the fuck you want to be'.

    Keep Skanking.

  • Customary End Of Year Best Of

    Dez 14 2008, 20h38 por missionverdana

Now I've been a bit lazy about puting my school paper articles up here, so here's the end of year round up:

It’ll soon be time to say goodbye to 2008, and instead of the usual round up of this year’s albums, I’ve decide to recommend some songs that made my year.

    Esser – Satisfied
With Classical-style keyboard parts and an addictive chorus performed by a very talented young man, this song is alt-pop perfection. Just check it out; it’ll have you singing for the rest of the day.
    http://www.myspace.com/esserhq

The Futureheads – The Beginning of the Twist
This quartet’s third album was released back in May, and this single marked a triumphant return, after the lack of success with 2006’s News and Tributes. An anthem for the indie-kids.
    http://www.myspace.com/thefutureheads

    Gallows – Black Heart Queen
Although this track was not released in 2008, it sums up 2008’s Underage Festival for me; it was at the close of this track that someone decided it was a good idea to chuck a bottle at vocalist Frank Carter. Remember, bottling artists is not nice and they don’t deserve it (even if they are called Lethal Bizzle and have decided to perform at Download Festival).
    http://www.myspace.com/gallows

Funeral for a Friend – You Can’t See The Forest For The Wolves
I’m a big fan of this band’s first album, and this particular track really captures the raw passion and spirit found on Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation. Although some of the other tracks on the latest album, Memory and Humanity, aren’t as full-on or fiery, it’s certainly worth a listen.
    http://www.myspace.com/funeralforafriend

Midnight Juggernauts – Into The Galaxy
This incredibly imaginative Klaxons-esque track from an Australian trio is one of the best songs I’ve heard all year. Midnight Juggernauts are rising stars (pardon the pun) in the dance/alternative scene, so look out for a new album next year.
    http://www.myspace.com/midnightjuggernauts

Los Campesinos! – Death To Los Campesinos!
I have to admit that this band really, really annoyed me. That is, until I heard this song. Suddenly, they didn’t seem quite so irritating after all. Vocalist Aleksandra has a beautiful singing voice, which balances out the more agitated tones of Gareth, the other lead vocalist. Seven people making a lot of noise with guitars and glockenspiels is rather more palatable than you might think.
    http://www.myspace.com/loscampesinos

    Paramore – Misery Business
They might just be another identikit emo band, standing out solely because of their female vocalist, but Paramore are a step ahead of the game with this particular track. Hayley Williams’ vocal talent is displayed excellently on Misery Business.
    http://www.myspace.com/paramore

The Metros – Last of the Lookers
Self-dubbed “punk and roll”ers, this is the second single from London five-piece The Metros. This song is different to the usual drab indie offerings, with far more attitude, whilst still remaining catchy.
    http://www.myspace.com/themetrosband

    Innerpartysystem – Don’t Stop
An electro-rock track that takes a while to get going, Don’t Stop is great once the chorus kicks in. You’ve probably heard of this song solely because it was the first track to be made into a vinyl consisting of chocolate. That’s right, an edible record! Perhaps not the best idea, as it was reportedly difficult to play the song, and it apparently didn’t taste very nice. The song itself, however, is far better, but not quite the musical equivalent of Thornton’s finest.
    http://www.myspace.com/innerpartysystem

The Ghost of a Thousand – Black Art Number One
Their album was released last year, yet this song appeared on the twobythree EP (a collaboration with Reuben and Baddies) and is apparently one of my most played songs of the year, according to last.fm (a site that features music recommendations based on what you listen to and calculates charts of your most played songs, artists and albums). A severe detonation of hardcore, if you’re a fan of bands like Funeral for a Friend and Gallows, this is certainly one to check out.
    http://www.myspace.com/theghostofathousand

Tom Allalone – Hell Hath No Fury
A video for this was actually released back in 2006, and I recall the song being played a lot on XFM’s Xposure (one of the best places to find new music, in my opinion) last year, but it’s actually being released this year. Curious. This well-crafted blues-influenced track will have you dancing around your bedroom like a lunatic. Or maybe that’s just me.
    http://www.myspace.com/tomallalone

    Vampire Weekend – A-Punk
Originally released in 2007, this is another track that’s returned to haunt us from the past. It’s an upbeat, jiving song with unintelligible vocals. Don’t let that put you off though, as A-Punk is a truly creative burst of musical inspiration, and one of the festival anthems of the summer.
    http://www.myspace.com/vampireweekend

Panic at the Disco – That Green Gentleman
The apparently overlooked second single from Panic at the Disco’s sophomore album featured a rather bizarre video (of which there is a brilliant description on Wikipedia, in case you can’t be bothered to actually watch the video). Just as entertaining as Nine in the Afternoon and more meaningful; this song should have been a bigger hit, but it only peaked at #90 in the UK singles chart. Then again, charts really don’t appear to matter these days.
    http://www.myspace.com/panicatthedisco

Speaking of charts, the Top of the Pops Christmas special is back this year, after the BBC faced much pressure from viewers and music mogul Simon Cowell alike. If that’s not enough, there will also be an episode on New Year’s Eve, featuring a musical review of 2008.

Finally, I will leave you with a more festive recommendation; the wonderful Christmas Is Awesome by Reuben, who announced a hiatus earlier this year, much to my sorrow. Check out the song, accompanied by a lightly amusing video, on Youtube.
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wH2umxtA_sc

If that’s not your cup of tea then you might prefer The Priests. No, not a really unimaginatively named band, but a trio of priests who sing sacred songs and are joining the annual battle for Christmas number one.
    http://www.thepriests.com/

And here are some other tracks I enjoyed but didn't include in the article:

Dashboard Confessional - Saints and Sailors
    Baddies - Battleships
    Hadouken! - Dance Lesson
Hour of the Wolf - Death's Coming
    Capdown - Cousin Cleotis
    Jason Mraz - Curbside Prophet
Conor Oberst - I Don't Want To Die (In The Hospital)
    Swound! - Bust A Move
Big D and the Kids Table - Noise Complaint
Blackhole - Not That This Is A Bad Thing
    The Audition - Edinboro
