  • NEWSLETTER 2009-03: ÓLAFUR ARNALDS new project KIASMOS - debut release for PRE-ORDER…

    Fev 24 2009, 2h59 por erasedtapes

Dear friends of the Erased Tapes collective!

2009 will see us release more cinematic albums including Codes In The Clouds’ long awaited debut ‘Paper Canyon’. But first we will start this year with some splendid techno releases! Yes, that’s right – TECHNO. And it’s intelligent. it’s playful and joyful. So let’s dance to it like it’s 1991... Love, Robert.

    Kiasmos/Rival Consoles – 65/MILO (12”/Download) for Pre-Order now!

Ólafur Arnalds new minimal techno side project Kiasmos shares split 12” debut with label colleague Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles. You can preview and pre-order it in our online store: http://store.erasedtapes.com

Icelandic neo-classical prodigy Ólafur Arnalds teams up with Bloodgroup mastermind Janus Rasmussen for a new project – Kiasmos. In order to shorten the waiting period on Arnalds’ forthcoming new album, Erased Tapes Records release their first tracks ‘Tocar65’ and ‘TocarWalled’ on March 30, 2009. As huge fans of label colleague Ryan Lee West alias Rival Consoles, Arnalds and Rasmussen share this debut split 12”/Download release ‘65/Milo’ with West, who contributes three more acidy, electro-laden tracks - ‘TocarMilo’, ‘TocarFunc’ and ‘TocarARP’.

After Arnalds had worked several times as a sound engineer for Rasmussen’s main project Bloodgroup, the two musicians discovered their common love for minimal, experimental techno music. At first they only met on weekends for a few drinks, and used the time to create experimental sounds with beats and various samples. The project developed and it became more serious – the result is Kiasmos.
Rasmussen, who has more experience with electronic music, usually crafts the beginning of the songs. As both have touring commitments, Rasmussen sends the first beats via email. With Arnalds’ good ear for pure and timeless melodies, he is then responsible for the overall song structure and the fine-tuning. ‘I am really enthusiastic about this project. Finally, I can make music that the people can dance to’, explains Arnalds in an interview with the German electronic music magazine Beat.

'The newest enrichment of Iceland's already extremely versatile music scene!’ – Beat Magazine (DE)
'Arnalds possesses a deft ear for theme that many composers thrice his age lack.' – Exclaim (CA)

Rival Consoles – Helvetica (7”/Download) OUT NOW!

Instead of X-Box versus Playstation, here West plays classical against dance music! You can preview and order your personal copy of the limited, hand-stamped 500 edition in our online store: http://store.erasedtapes.com

Rival Consoles is 21-year old IDM-smith Ryan Lee West from Leicester in the Midlands of England. After having supported his city neighbours and label comrades Kyte on an extensive European tour in November 2008, West locked himself away all winter to finish his first full-length album, set to see the light of day in mid 2009. In the meantime fans of his debut ‘The Decadent EP’ will be pleased to hear that TODAY Erased Tapes Records released an exclusive 4-track 7” single / download bundle – Rival Consoles’ take on classical music entitled ’Helvetica’.

West was the first to represent Erased Tapes Records at the British Music Week 2007 in Cologne, Germany. New York composer and film scorer Nico Muhly, Daniel James aka Canon Blue from Nashville as well as fellow countrymen The British Expeditionary Force are amongst the first to receive West’s trademark remixes. Ryan repeatedly performed at the Tate Britain Museum in London where he drew over 2000 visitors into his unpredictable, yet detailed sound drawings. As the last title on ‘Helvetica’, a remix of his debut EP track ‘TocarSeventeen’, as well as the three 12” tracks on ‘65/Milo’ imply, West wants to prepare everyone for something extremely more dance-orientated coming up next… IO.

‘Two words: Electro Genius!’ – BBC Radio (UK)
'Modern electronic music at its most interesting.' – The Milk Factory (UK)
’The next Ólafur Arnalds record... sounding like an uptempo Mr. Oizo remix. Easily one of the most interesting releases of 2009 so far.' – Zombie Attack (UK)
'One very hyper man amalgamating the progressive beats of LCD Soundsystem with the wicked techno chaos of Aphex Twin. It is apparent that this is an act which it’s totally cool for you to like!’ – Rock Sound (UK)
'The sound of a drum machine smacked by a serial killer invades these harrowing instrumentals making your every waking moment like walking down a darkened street to the sound of rustling bushes. An impressive selection!' – New Noise (UK)

Codes In The Clouds – First promo UK shows announced!

11 March LONDON, Buffalo Bar w/Liger
14 April NORWICH, Queen Charlotte w/Jeniferever
    28 April BRIGHTON, Freebutt w/Jeniferever

We are currently working on their upcoming debut album together with label comrade, producer and The British Expeditionary Force mastermind Justin Lockey. You can preview first tracks on their MySpace page: http://myspace.com/codesintheclouds

You can purchase the CD or Download in our online store: http://store.erasedtapes.com

Finn. is German singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Zimmer, who recorded his third offering ‘The Best Low-Priced Heartbreakers You Can Own’ in the catacombs of an old 14th century church underneath the streets of Hamburg and recently found a new home with Erased Tapes – a conceptualist with the voice of Leonard Cohen on helium. • RIVAL CONSOLES - Helvetica - Limited Edition 7" incl. DDC for PRE-ORDER NOW!

    Fev 6 2009, 19h15 por erasedtapes

Rival Consoles is 21-year old IDM-smith Ryan Lee West from Leicester in the Midlands of England. After having supported his city neighbours and label comrades Kyte on an extensive European tour in November 2008, West locked himself away all winter to finish his first full-length album, set to see the light of day in mid 2009. In the meantime fans of his debut ‘The Decadent EP’ will be pleased to hear that on February 23, 2009 Erased Tapes Records will release an exclusive 4-track 7” single / download bundle – Rival Consoles' take on classical music entitled 'Tocarhelvetica'. Instead of X-Box versus Playstation, here West plays classical against dance music!

Influenced by impressionists like Claude Debussy and modern electronic artists such as Autechre and Daft Punk, Ryan Lee West created a unique signature sound for Rival Consoles. A playful and brutal mix of electronic beats, emotive piano melodies and warm synth string arrangements. Ryan repeatedly performed at the Tate Britain Museum in London where he drew over 2000 visitors into his unpredictable, yet detailed sound drawings. He was the first to represent Erased Tapes Records at the British Music Week 2007 in Cologne, Germany.

In February 2007 he released and toured the more quirky ‘Vemeer EP’ under his second musical alias Aparatec, which sold like hot cakes and earned him IDM, acid and electro fans alike – Brian at Norman Records was ecstatic:

‘Bendy as heck acid electro, that's really bloody accomplished and fresh. He's the first person I've heard to utilise that sound and for him to be progressive with it without resorting to plagiarism earns him big brownie points. I bet even AFX would be impressed with the lad's fantastic efforts. It's his keen ear for warm melodies and tidy, playful beats that makes this such a damn treat.’

New York composer and film scorer Nico Muhly, Daniel James aka Canon Blue from Nashville as well as fellow countrymen The British Expeditionary Force are amongst the first to receive Rival Consoles’ trademark remixes. As the last title on ‘Helvetica’ implies, West added a remix of his debut EP track ‘TocarSeventeen’ to prepare everyone for something extremely more dance-orientated coming up next…

  • Erik Levander is finally back!!

    Mar 1 2008, 12h06 por Rumraket

March 17 2008 marks release number 12 from the Efterklang driven label Rumraket.

In our humble opinion Erik Levanders new album Kondens is a masterpiece (f*** objectiveness). You can test run his new album via this free MP3 hosted by Rumraket - Oskärpa - www.rumraket.com/music/Erik_Levander_Oskarpa.mp3

Read the album press release below.

If you would like to own the album then you can already buy it from
    iTunes = http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=270384949&s=143458
    eMusic = www.emusic.com/album/Erik-Levander-Kondens-MP3-Download/11132740.html
    Klicktrack = www.klicktrack.com/shop/release.jsp?cp=79&r=66970

Erik Levander is from Sweden and is a dark romantic with a knack for abstract electronica and beautiful moving melodies. In a single song you will be able to hear the aftermath of digital Ragnarok intervened by divine haunting melodies and a new world rising up in the horizon built upon a weave of lush bleeps and brittle stutter.

We (as in Efterklang/Rumraket) met Erik Levander at the wonderful forma nova festival back in 2005. Since then we have called him our friend and he has guested several Efterklang recordings, among them the latest Parades album. It is truly a pleasure and honor to be the label to release Kondens - his new and 2nd album as a solo artist.

The album has been underway for almost 4 years. Halfway through the process Erik’s hard drive suffered from a major crash and there was unfortunately no backup. With the kind help of donations from music loving people all over the world, enough money was raised to have the drive repaired in a fancy lab. Very unfortunate once again the data proved impossible to recover. All donators have since continued as private sponsors of the album. Almost 2 years has passed and now finally the album is finished. Some songs are completely new and some songs have been remade by building upon early stereo-mixdowns.

Erik Levander makes majestic and tender themes, which he heavily confronts with his passion for noise, classical, traditional and impro music. With the help of his computer he forms all of it into one big detailed and roaring murmur of electronica, romantic melodies, discordia, eccentric beauty and gripping drama!

Born 1981 in Linköping, Sweden Erik Levander grew up listening to bands like My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth and Red House Painters while taking classical clarinet lessons. Besides the clarinet Erik also masters the guitar, piano and other racket makers. All of this can be heard throughout on the album. Sometimes in their pure forms and often manipulated into a new form. Today he lives in Copenhagen where he is about to finish his master degree in architecture.

Throughout the years he has played in a wide array of bands and projects, but since 2002 he has focused on the electronic music he makes on his computer. Already he has an interesting discography behind him. The official debut album Tonad (NEON Gallery Records, 2004) is his biggest milestone so far. Besides his solo project Erik Levander sometimes finds time to play in the Swedish experimental impro-act FRIA KONSTELLATIONEN.

Rumraket is a small and friendly label driven by the Danish band Efterklang. Besides limited editions of Efterklangs releases Rumraket has released albums with Grizzly Bear (us), Cacoy (jp – Tenniscoats + Dj Klock - RIP), Kama Aina (jp), Taxi Taxi! (se), Slaraffenland (dk) and Canon Blue (us)

  • Canon Blue gives away Halcyon EP

    Dez 17 2007, 18h11 por puddlegum

It can be difficult for artists to give their music away for free to the consumer, considering the time, energy, costs, and the amount of thought that they put into the album. But at a time when artists simply need to be heard, waiting for people to purchase music might mean that the music simply goes unnoticed. Canon Blue is aware of this and has decided to give their four song Halycon EP away as a free download.

Daniel James, the creative Tennessee gent behind Canon Blue, signed with the Danish Rumraket record label to release Colonies on September 24. Now, just three months later, Canon Blue and Rumraket have decided to release this EP for free. The four-song download is packaged with album art, credits, and a note from Daniel. The album was mastered by Mads Brauer of Efterklang, the band that operates Rumraket.

With a label behind him, Daniel James was able to invite guest musicians to record cello, sax, slide guitar, trumpet, and drums. As before, James produced, recorded, and mixed the album.

The decision to release this album for free is a brilliant move. Canon Blue is still fresh on people’s minds, and now this gem will be passed around to solidify the name. Before any band sees any return to their hard work, they have to have a wide fanbase. More listeners translate into ticket sales, and merchandise sales at live shows. Giving your music away for free pays off in the long run.

“This EP, for me, is a way to reflect on yet another year quietly slipping by, enjoying the present stillness of a tennessee winter, and looking forward to what is coming up over those yon there hills. I hope you are to able find something in it too. thanks for listening…” (a note from Daniel James)

    Groups: The Arctic Circle

If you like my reco of the week this week, you might be interested in my recommendation for the perfect Christmas album - The Arctic Circle Presents: That Fuzzy Feeling.

My friends in Last.fm who get regular shouts from me with the words 'trust me' will know I mean it when I say it. I mean it now - trust me, this is the album you want for Christmas.

The Arctic Circle is a loose collective of musicians and bands ranging from indie and folk through electronica to orchestral and choral.

The 15 tracks on the special edition Christmas album are mostly original Christmas songs and carols, some of them one-off collaborations. The result is a warm, slightly old-fashioned sounding, sophisticated album, ideal for those dinner parties and get-togethers, and one you will enjoy for years to come.

You can hear three tracks on MySpace.

The album was released at the beginning of this week and is only available from Lo Recordings.

    Track listing:

    1. Fuzzy Lights – Snowstorm in a snow globe
    2. Canon Blue (Rumraket) – Halcyon
    3. Dollboy (Arable) – Look Darling, It's Starting To Snow
