Mon 26 Oct – European Plague Tour 2009

Wie niet voor Cannibal Corpse of Dying Fetus of Obscura naar Dordrecht afreist, komt misschien wel voor Cannibal Corpse én Dying Fetus én Obscura. Dat is in het kort het principe van de metal package tour. Onder aan de bill zijn dan nog één of twee onbekende bands te vinden, die vaak betalen om mee te mogen op de tour. Om 19:30 spelen ze voor een handvol bezoekers hun twintig minuten vol in de hoop zo een naam op te bouwen.

Bij Evocation ligt het net even anders. De Zweden zijn niet zo bekend, maar zijn van onberispelijke afkomst. De in 2005 heropgerichte band weet op de European Plague Tour 2009 zijn cultstatus dan ook waar te maken, ondanks het aan een voorprogramma inherente matige geluid. De gitaristen mixen hun zagende Stockholmriffs met melodieuze Gothenburgloopjes af, waarmee ze een vrij originele mengvorm van beide vormen van Zweedse death metal creëren. Zanger Thomas Josefsson is dan ook nog een volksmenner met relativeringsvermogen. Als hij zich verslikt tijdens een over the top ruige aankondiging, moet hij zelf het hardste lachen. Zo weet Evocation het publiek dat nog aan de bar hangt de zaal in te spelen; aan het einde van het optreden staan er beduidend meer mensen voor het podium dan aan het begin.

Ook Obscura-leider Steffen Kummerer blijkt ondanks alle vooroordelen over progmuzikanten over humor te beschikken: "De ideeën voor dit nummer hebben we gestolen van de band Death, van de plaat Human. Kennen jullie dat?" Er gaan spaarzaam wat handen omhoog. "Oh, wel twintig mensen." Waarna weer een weergaloos technisch doch melodieus stuk techdeath volgt. Helaas ontbreekt het Nederlandse baswonder Jeroen-Paul Thesseling om prozaïsche reden: hij kon geen vrij krijgen van zijn werk. Zijn vervanger kan uiteraard ook uitstekend bassen, maar is niet zo goed ingespeeld met de drummer en speelt in tegenstelling tot Thesseling gewoon met fretten op zijn bas, wat toch iets van de uniciteit van het Obscurageluid wegneemt.

Vervolgens gaan de shirts uit en de petten met de rechte klep op voor de br00tal slamz van Dying Fetus. De slammetalgodfathers zijn de enige band op de avond met maar één gitarist, maar dat lijkt eerder een voor- dan een nadeel; Dying Fetus heeft het meest heldere geluid en de solo's van John Gallagher zijn fantastisch. De band speelt strak, zodat de moshpit zich snel vult met T-shirtloze witte lichamen die zich tegen elkaar aan gooien op de maat van een getriggerde snaredrum die klinkt als een Olympische tafeltennisfinale. Dying Fetus wint de prijs voor het beste optreden van de avond met de muziek die altijd bruut is, maar dat niet ten koste laat gaan van diepgang.

Cannibal Corpse probeert niet eens beter te zijn; als de pauzes tussen de nummers net zo lang duren als de nummers zelf, krijgt een optreden nooit vaart. Er wordt tijdens die stops wel altijd ijverig aan stemknoppen gedraaid, maar zo belangrijk is het voor de lompe old school death metal niet dat de gitaren perfect gestemd zijn; het lijkt erop dat de heren toch een dagje ouder worden en af en toe even moeten uithijgen.

Als ze dan eindelijk gaan spelen, dan klinkt het wel goed. De veteranen uit Buffalo hebben het beste geluid van de avond en spelen hoorbaar al jaren samen. Als George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher niet grunt, dan blijken zijn gebrek aan een kin en ridicuul gespierde nek hem 's werelds beste headbanger te maken. Hij daagt het publiek zelfs officieel uit tot een wedstrijd. Die uitdaging wordt niet opgepakt, maar verder heeft Cannibal Corpse niet te klagen over publieksparticipatie.

Deze show heeft nog een ouderwets metalpubliek met een hoog percentage freaks en white trash - Cannibal Corpse is de ultieme anti-hipster metal - dat bovendien al drie bands lang in hoog tempo bier naar binnen aan het gieten is, dus de sfeer zit er goed in. Een grote groep mannen en één vrouw zijn zo druk met elkaar bont en blauw beuken, dat ze niet de tijd hebben vraagtekens te zetten bij het in vergelijking met Obscura en Dying Fetus weinig interessant songmateriaal van Cannibal Corpse. Nou ja, tijdens die lange pauzes misschien. Maar die zijn er om bier te halen.

Dying Fetus has posted additional in-studio footage taped during the Descend Into Depravity recording session online now at this location. Descend Into Depravity, Dying Fetus’ seventh studio recording, was recorded at Wright Way Studios in Baltimore, MD with producer Steve Wright.

Dying Fetus are currently touring in support of Descend Into Depravity, rounding out their European run alongside Cannibal Corpse this week in the United Kingdom. Upon returning home, Dying Fetus with team up with The Faceless for a co-headlining US Tour. This tour, dubbed “The Planetary Depravity Tour”, will kick off in mid-November and also include Beneath the Massacre, Vital Remains, Annotations of an Autopsy and more on select dates. Descend Into Depravity saw its international release in late September and is currently streaming in its entirety at this location: www.DescendIntoDepravity.info. The album debuted at #166 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and at #4 on the Heatseekers Chart.

Dying Fetus recently premiered the first video from Descend Into Depravity, for the track “Shepherd’s Commandment”, online here. The “Shepherd’s Commandment” video was lensed in New York with director Kevin Custer (Hatebreed, Testament, Soulja Boy, Kingdom of Sorrow).

This is just a post discussing my thoughts on some of the new releases this year that I've managed to get my hands on and listen to. Each review, per se, will only be brief as I have a fair few to get through, but long enough to share my thoughts on them. Please, leave your comments and let me know what you think. Starting in alphabetical order, first "cab off the rank" is:

Alestorm - Black Sails at Midnight

Well... What can I say about this? Compared to their earlier effort (see Captain Morgan's Revenge) this just falls flat. Tracks like "Leviathan" and "Chronicles of Vengeance" try to fool you into thinking you were listening to their first major release, however it's a pity that the best track on the album is just a cover. If you liked Captain Morgan's Revenge, then do yourself a favour and listen to it again, just louder, rather than bother listening to this.

Breaking Benjamin - Dear Agony

Following on the heels of 2006's Phobia, I was a little anxious to see how this one would turn out. However, I'm happy to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Songs like "Give Me A Sign", "Anthem Of The Angels" and, of course, the first single "I Will Not Bow" just remind me of why I fell in love with BB. In my opinion, this is their strongest album to date and definitely worth checking out.

Candlemass - Death Magic Doom

Wow... That's all I can say. I don't have much knowledge about Candlemass as I've only heard one album prior, that being 1987's Nightfall, but this album made me listen. From the moment "If I Ever Die" began, I knew that this album was going to be good. Starting off strong, it goes from strength to strength with "Hammer of Doom" right through to "My Funeral Dreams". Maybe I don't have enough knowledge of Candlemass to make an accurate judgement that most will agree on, but, based solely on my own personal tastes, I strongly recommend listening to this at least once.

Cannibal Corpse - Evisceration Plague

Meh... I never really could get into CC, Vile is just better. Sorry, but I just didn't like this album. There was nothing that made me think "Holy Crap, I better sit down and listen or else this album will kick my arse" so if you like CC, then check it out I guess, but... Meh

Chimaira - The Infection

Aaah... This is where it gets interesting. I still like Resurrection better, but The Infection really does try to improve. It took me a few listens before I started to appreciate how well this album comes together. Each song has it's own unique style to it, whereas Resurrection's songs just flowed into each other, The Infection is like a collection of songs that Chimaira felt you HAD to hear. Tracks like "Frozen In Time" and "Impending Doom" take time to start, but, like "Six" before them, they are worth the wait. No album is perfect, but this has definitely been one of my highlights this year.

Deathstars - Night Electric Night

Hmmn... What to say about this one... I don't know... I mean... It's Deathstars... If you've heard Synthetic Generation or Termination Bliss, then you know what to expect. Nothing here stood out and screamed at me, the songs are catchy sure, but that's how Deathstars roll... Not much to say, it's not brilliant, but it's not crap, it's just... It's Deathstars.

Okay... So I have more albums to get through than I thought, so I'll get around to posting up my thoughts on some more of 2009's albums soon, and, don't worry, they'll be in alphabetical order. First up in the next part will be Evermore's Truth Of The World: Welcome To The Show... Yerrr, didn't see that one coming? Meh, I don't like it anyway, but more on that next time. The 69 Eyes

Liebe Spaßgesellschaft,

der Bandcontest im Darmstädter Tanzbunker, dem Steinbruch-Theater, ging gestern in seine dritte Runde. Immer noch bemühen sich zehn Bands musikalisch direkt oder beste Drittplatzierung ins Halbfinale zu spielen.



Der gestrige Abend hatte im Schwerpunktprogramm Bands mit einer härteren Gangart parat - also harte Knüpller und Brecher an Riffs. Nach reinrassigem Rock und -Coregeschrubbe durfte man dieses Mal etwas erwarten, weshalb der Laden nochmal eine Schippe mehr Besucher als vergangenen Mittwoch drauflegen konnte. Es hat sich schon längst herumgesprochen, dass eine überzeugende Performance auf der Bühne eben nur die halbe Miete ist - wer die meisten Anhänger in den Bruch zur Abstimmung mobilisieren kann, darf sich ebenso gute Chancen ausrechnen.


Durfte auch heute wieder durchs Programm führen: DJ Doom.

Erste Band des Abends:

Underkill

Um gleich jeden Verdacht zu bestätigen: Ja, diese Reportage ist ein wenig parteiisch. Meine Wenigkeit verdingte sich aushilfsweise bei The Hammerschmidts , aus welchen sich (quasi wie KISS aus Wicked Lester und Bullfrog Beer) nun Underkill entwickelten.

Das Quartett praktiziert musikalisch den prog metal, ähnlich wie Mastodon (v.a. auf Blood Mountain oder gar Opeth - natürlich sind sie da vom Können noch mehr als gefühlte zehn Autominuten entfernt. Den Lokalmatadoren aus Darmstadt kommt zugute, dass die Truppe als Erste auf die Bühne müssen - ein gutes Omen, schaffte es in diesem Wettbewerb bisher noch jede Band auf Startplatz Eins ins Semifinale.

Ihr aus fünf Songs bestehendes Programm rockt die Truppe gekonnt runter, sieht man von den üblichen Ausfällen ab - das Effektpedal hat keine Lust, und auch der Verstärker verzieht sich vorzeitig an die Fleischtheke. Und dabei haben Underkill noch Glück - Mischer und Drumkit waren bis kurz vor Auftritt noch keineswegs selbstverständlich gestellt.


Sänger Flo mobilisiert alle Stimmbänder und grölt in einer angenehmen Tonlage, die man ihm nicht zugetraut hätte. Nervosität aufgrund mangelnder Bühnen war allen anzumerken, außer Simon an der Klampfe, der schon öfters vor Publikum gezockt hat.

Der Menge schmeckte der musikalische Cocktail jedenfalls, vereinzelt gab es sogar Headbanger, welche körperlich dem Takt folgten.
Einen Höreindruck kann man sich hier auf last.fm oder auf ihrer Myspace-Seite machen - lohnt sich auf jeden Fall.



Zweite Band:

Amity

Im Halbdunkel des Soundchecks dachten nicht wenige zunächst: schon wieder Mortal Existence? Ein weibliches Wesen am Mikro sowie eine mit etwas mehr Lebenserfahrung ausgestattete Band? Nein, die Wiesbadener Amity brauchen keinen Keyboarder, schlagen aber mit Heavy Prog in eine ähnliche Kerbe wie die bereits Qualifizierten.
Wohlgemerkt: ähnlich. Nicht dieselbe. Genauer betrachtet machen es Amity nicht ganz so anspruchsvoll.



Ich weiß nicht - Amity machten ihre Sachen an den Instrumenten schon ordentlich, auch die Sängerin gab ihr Bestes. Aber die dargebotenen Songs hauten mich nicht vom Hocker. Ehrlich gesagt waren die relativ eintönig und vermittelten auf mich eher den Gedanken an Hintergrundbeschallung. Eine offizielle Webrpäsenz war nicht auszumachen, die namensverwandete Metalcoreband, auf die ich mich auch eingestellt hatte, war's jedenfalls nicht. Ebensowenig wie eine musikalische Offenbarung.


Dritte Band:

Sardaukar

Der Name lässt die Vermutung zu, dass die Ortsnamen und Begriffe von Tolkiens Mittelerde noch nicht vollständig zwecks Bandname abgegrast wurden. Cirith Ungol, Gorgoroth, Minas Morgul - und Burzum. Die Odenwälder Sardaukar haben sich allerdings nach einer Gruppierung aus Frank Herbert's Dune benannt. Und ihren eigenen Arzt haben sie auch mitgebracht.

Der Fünfer lässt sich musikalisch am besten in Richtung brutal death metal einordnen, Debauchery, Cannibal Corpse und Co. lassen grüßen. Endlich eine Band, welche die derbe Keule auspackt. Die Zuschauer wussten dies zu goutieren:

Mit dem bis dato dichtesten Gedränge vor der Bühne sowie lautesten Beifall empfehlen sich die Odenwälder mit ihrem selbst betitelten Gorecore fürs Weiterkommen. Wer mehr sehen und hören will, der kann das hier.



Vierte Band:

New Blast Chaos

Als heißestes Eisen fürs Weiterkommen werden die Mainzer New Blast Chaos gehandelt - ihre Hörproben auf Myspace jedenfalls hinterließen einen starken Eindruck.
Hardcore mit Technical Death Einschlag steht da auf der Brust, und der Sänger Vogo sieht auch so aus, als würde er es damit ernst meinen:


Tigerente: Nebenberuf

Mit ordentlichem Einsatz und growligem Organ gibt der Frontmann alles und verlässt als Erster des Abends die Bühne um das Publikum Auge in Auge zu beschallen. Weiter hinten hörte sich das Dargebotene allerdings nicht so prickelnd an - technisch und qualitativ liefern New Blast Chaos zwar die beste Vorstellung ab, nur war der Musikstil nicht jedermanns Sache. Mir persönlich war es zu wenig Gefrickel und ordentliches Gegniedel an der Gitarre, um das Technical zu rechtfertigen. Besser als Amity war die Show jedoch allemal. Und auch als das was nach ihnen die Bühne betritt.


Letzte Band:

Set a Seed

Die Heppenheimer gaben mir von Anfang an dasselbe Gefühl, welches mir auch Crystal Finch (raus in Durchgang 1) und The Green River Burial (Abflug in Durchgang 2) - nämlich dass man alles irgendwie schon mal woanders gehört hat, und das obendrein auch besser. Bei so einer Veranstaltung allerdings auch nichts, was man sonderlich bemängeln sollte. Set A Seed praktizieren Metal mit Alternative Einschlag, und mehr als eine an bekanntere Töne angelehnte Passagen ließ sich auch herausfiltern.

Mir jedenfalls sagte das nicht zu - schade, der erste Eindruck auf ihrer Website ließ mehr erhoffen. Selbst ohne Underkill, welche meiner Unterstützung bekommen, hätten sich Set A Seed hinter Sardaukar und New Blast Chaos eingeordnet.

Auf den Stimmzettel landeten bei mir nach Underkill die Odenwälder Sardaukar, Letztere sah ich auch sicher in der zweiten Runde.



DAS URTEIL

Bei der bislang höchsten Stimmteilnahme gab es keine wirklichen Überraschungen. Amity (30 Punkte) und Set a Seed (35) belegen die Plätze fünf und vier, hätten damit bestenfalls noch Chancen als etwaige Nachrücker (was extremst gering wäre).

Mit 55 Punkten landen New Blast Chaos auf dem Bronzetreppchen. Weil sie im direkten Vergleich mehr Stimmen abgreifen konnten als Lykewake (41) letzte Woche, sind sie ebenfalls sicher im Halbfinale.

Beifall ernteten die beiden direkt Qualifizierten: Sardaukar kam auf 81 Punkte und fährt die bis dahin höchste Punkzahl der drei bisher absolvierten Vorrunden ein. Underkill folgen ihnen mit 62 Stimmen. Glückwunsch den Weitergekommenen!

Sab 10 Oct – European Plague Tour 2009

El pasado sábado 10 de Octubre tuvimos la ocasión de presenciar en la madrileña sala Heineken una gira única, formada por grandes bandas clásicas del genero del brutal death principalmente como Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus o los reunidos suecos Evocation y unas de las mejores formaciones jóvenes actuales como son los alemanes Obscura.

La apertura de puertas quizás fuera demasiado temprano, pero es lo que tiene celebrarse un concierto en una sala de estas características, por eso como todos sabéis antes de las 23.00h todos fuera, que la sala tiene que abrir y dejarla en condiciones para su respectiva clientela habitual. Por eso los suecos Evocation comenzaron su corto show a eso de las 18.45, lo cual me sorprendió gratamente porque tenia más ganas de ver a Obscura y al no abrir, quizás tuvieran un poco más de tiempo para su actuación. Aprovecho para comentaros que al parecer el orden de los alemanes y lo suecos se iban intercambiando la posición en todas las fechas de la gira, datos bastante positivos para ambos.



Por lo que con puntualidad inglesa, los suecos liderados por Thomas "Tjompe” salieron a escena a presentarnos mayoritariamente su ultimo trabajo “Dead Calm Chaos”. La verdad que era la única banda del cartel representante de la escena sueca y la verdad que dejaron el pabellón muy alto en sus escasos 25 min de actuación. En general vimos a una banda muy entregada, con un sonido mejorando por momentos resultando un gran concierto para prepararnos de lo que nos iba a caer después. El primer tema en sonar fue “Silence Sleep”, sin duda un tema ideal para abrir su show, mucho sólo cristalino de guitarra característico del estilo, por lo menos eso es lo que me parecía a mi desde el foso de fotógrafo donde pude degustar sus tres primeros temas “Silence Sleep”, “Angel of Torment” y un desconocido “Veils Were Blown” perteneciente a su primera obra “Tales From The Tomb” editada en 2007. Después cuando me volví con el público quizás me encontré con un sonido mucho más apelotonado y menos preciso.

Ahora quiero puntualizar sobre un aspecto (porque seguro que la mayoría de vosotros no los conocéis), Evocation fue una banda que surgió en plenos años 90 y que por alguna extraña razón, lo dejaron en su mejor momento de forma. La prensa especializada les denominó los nuevos Entombed, ya que supieron aunar el mejor death old school con los sonidos más frescos provenientes de gothenburg, donde por aquel entonces bandas como In Flames o Dark Tranquillity comenzaban a dar sus primeros pasos y otras como At the Gates empezaban a consolidarse gratamente. Por lo que Evocation son sinónimo de ser unas de las bandas con más repercusión de la escena sueca de antaño, es una pena que vuelvan cuando la escena quizás esté demasiada saturada de este tipo de bandas, eso si en directo cumplen a la perfección y personalmente me encantó poder degustar en directo una banda de esta repercusión.



Para la ocasión tampoco pudieron faltar trallazos de la talla de “Dust” tema 100% técnico y melódico, la sorprendente “Antidote”, donde la banda demuestra esa increíble forma de clavar todas las notas y finalizaron su show con el gran corte “Feed The Fire” (de su primer álbum), con el último tema del disco “Razored To The Bone”, tema 100% At the Gates, y con una increíble Outro al ritmo de quejumbrosas guitarras. En definitiva, realizaron un buen show, pero quizás les falló algo el sonido y sobre todo el poco tiempo que tuvieron. También se les vio ser una banda que quizás no esté acostumbrada a realizar directos y giras, pero por lo general muy buena actuación.

Sobre las 19.25 salieron a la escena los “yogurines” de la noche, Obscura, una banda que con dos trabajos y gracias al apoyo que han recibido de su sello relapse records, se han colado por meritos propios, gracias a la edición “Cosmogenesis” en una gira tan brutal como es esta “European Plague Tour 2009”. La banda no necesitó mucho cambio, ya que la batería de ellos y la de Evocation era la de Dying Fetus. La banda no tardó más de diez minutos en salir a escena y el resultado fue sobresaliente. Quizás la técnica demostrada y las ganas de esta formación pudiera parecer que se comieron con patatas a los suecos de Evocation, y a mi parecer así sucedió. Sonaron mucho más compactos y lo más importante, más rápidos, técnicos, virtuosos y brutales a la vez. También acompaña que gozaron de un excelente sonido por lo que estos chicos triunfaron como la Coca-Cola en su posiblemente primera gran gira europea acompañando a unas bandas de excepción. El público reaccionó muy bien al ver como se las gastaba esta jovencísima banda tan amiga de los sonidos extremos que bandas como Cynic o Death patentaron hace años y que bandas como Obscura siguen creyendo en continuar su amplio legado.



En cuanto a la elección del setlist ninguna pega, sonaron temas como el que abre su nuevo compacto “Anticosmic Overload” un tema 100% técnico, como la gran mayoría de temas del disco, en donde vemos rápidamente como se las gasta esta gente, con un batería como Hannes Grossmann hiper tecnico & comprometido y con dos guitarras que para nada son mancos, uno de ellos Steffen, además vocalista (atención al vozarrón del colega), por lo que el merito es doble. Después continuaron con otros temas como ”Choir of Spirits” con esos aires vocales experimentales gracias a las voces de Steffen en el estribillo, que me recuerdan y mucho a gente como Borknagar, todo ello aderezado con la más amplia gama de guturales marca de la casa. Aunque el virtuosismo en mayúsculas lo vimos en “Universe Momentum” con ese despliegue de rabia y técnica por los cuatro costados, lo mismo sucede con la bestial “Desolate Spheres”. Y para terminar nos ofrecieron “Centric Flow” otro tema personal con esa mezcla entre rabia y virtuosismo, y es que las guitarras parecían que hablaban en todo momento. En definitiva, me quito el sombrero ante esta joven formación, la cual seguro que les depara el mejor de los futuros. Dentro de poco volverán a nuestro país acompañando esta vez a gente como The Black Dhalia Murder, 3 Inches of Blood y otra joven formación death técnica como son The Faceless. Gran Show de estos pequeños genios que destacan por realizar un death metal ultra técnico con impresionantes cambios de ritmo (blast beat-medio tempo) y peliagudos solos a las 6 cuerdas…

A eso de las 20.15 irrumpieron en el escenario los tres angelitos de Annapolis (Maryland, EEUU) que conforman la maquinaria de Dying Fetus. Además me resultó especialmente curioso contemplar cómo fueron ellos mismos los que probaron los instrumentos y, sin más dilación que lo que tardó el batería Trey Williams en quitarse la camiseta, directamente, comenzaron a repartir cera al personal con ese death metal machacón tan característico del grupo.



Poco a poco comenzaron a desgranar piezas fundamentales de su discografía, incluyendo su último redondo “Descend Into Depravity” que ha salido al mercado hace apenas un mes y cuya portada recuerda bastante a videojuegos de hace años estilo Metal Gear Solid y similares. Resulta, no obstante, increíble la tralla que pueden meter tres personas que, con tan reducido número, no pueden ni jugar al mus ellos solos. En este sentido, uno tras uno fueron cayendo los temazos de la banda, con un sonido bastante correcto, y con esa ametralladora a mil por hora y los contrastes de voces ultratumba-fregadero que son capaces de realizar el dúo dinámico John Gallagher-Sean Beasley: Los nuevos juglares del siglo XXI que recorren pueblos y ciudades machacando a la temerosa población con sus nuevos sonetos y composiciones.

En líneas generales, por tanto, fueron unos 45 minutos de caña descomunal formándose los primeros pogos de impresión, al mismo ritmo que decrecía el oxígeno que teníamos disponible pues, pese a algunas excepciones sobre todo con Evocation, la verdad es que durante los dos primeros grupos más o menos pudimos estar tranquilos y sin demasiadas apreturas (de hecho, el respetable estuvo muy frío fundamentalmente con Obscura, no sé si por desconocimiento o por estar apabullados por tanta técnica y brutalidad). Así que, en definitiva, un concierto bastante bueno por parte de los vecinos de Baltimore Dying Fetus, bastante técnicos y con unas partes un poco “core” que resultaron adecuadas para desengrasar al personal y despegarlo de la pared ante tanta contundencia.

Pues bien, después de las tres dosis de potencia que llevábamos en el cuerpo, aún quedaba el considerado como plato fuerte de la noche. Nada menos que los también norteamericanos Cannibal Corpse, con su superdotado vocalista George Fisher al frente.



En torno a las 21.15, con una puntualidad exquisita como en toda la noche (de hecho estaba previsto que empezasen 15 minutos más tarde), irrumpieron sobre el escenario los de Florida con toda su fuerza intacta. Poco a poco fueron desgranando sus ya numerosos discos con grandes canciones, realmente recibidas con alborozo por el respetable, como “I Cum Blood” donde el amigo vocalista empezó a mostrar que su cuello no es de este mundo, con esos molinillos interminables en los que la musculatura del cuello parece equivalente a la de los toros de lidia retomando, al instante y sin ningún problema, la letra de la canción correspondiente. Cayeron, también, cortes como “Sentenced To Burn”, “Fucked With A Knife” o “A Skull Full Of Maggots” además de algunos otros que ahora entraré a detallar.

En este punto hay que comentar que no cabía ni un alfiler en la sala Heineken de Madrid (por supuesto, los pogos casi llegaban al techo). Además, nunca entenderé cómo es posible que la gente siga yendo y viniendo, con los correspondientes empujones, pisotones, codazos, restregones de sudor, golpes de melenas en la cara, etcétera; cuando resulta imposible desde el punto de vista de la física de los espacios poder encontrar un hueco para poder desplazarse. Pues bien, podemos asegurar que cierto distinguido público resulta contumaz en el esfuerzo y va, va y va (incluso cuando queda una canción o dos) sin importarle nada ni nadie, pero bueno esto es como predicar en el desierto…

Centrándonos en lo realmente importante, los de Tampa siguieron machando al personal con ese death metal tan propio que mezcla rompedoras partes de Blast Beat con machaconas fases de medio tiempo, buenos solos a las seis cuerdas y, todo ello, alrededor de los impresionantes juegos vocales de su frontman, el eminente Mr. Fisher (o Nathan Explosion para los amigos que conozcan la serie Metalocalypse y su grupo Dethklok, de cuya primera temporada llevaba camiseta nuestro vociferante amiguito), que es capaz de entrelazar voces más death-guturales con otras de un estilo más gritón-rasgado sin ningún problema al mismo tiempo que, faltaría más, gira el cuello a la velocidad de la luz y pega “frenazos” en seco para seguir desbrozando esas letras tan explícitas y sangrientas.



Además, uno tenía la idea de que pasados los sesenta minutos de concierto estos angelitos deberían sustituir a su batería por amputación de brazos y piernas dada la velocidad y complejidad de su música, pero nada más lejos de la realidad pues aguantaron en el escenario nada menos que una hora y veinte minutos (hasta las 22.35) con unas últimas canciones apoteósicas que nos dieron a todos la puntilla que estábamos deseando. Se trata de los cortes “The Time To Kill Is Now”, “Priests Of Sodom” (esta última de su disco más reciente “Evisceration Plague”), “Hammer Smashed Face” con su característico riff de bajo al inicio de la canción y la finalmente apoteósica “Stripped, Raped And Strangled”. En definitiva, un concierto muy bueno que redondeó una noche mágica en todos los sentidos.

Pues, en resumen, se puede concluir que asistíamos a un festival realmente prometedor de metal extremo que, sin lugar a dudas, cumplió con creces nuestras expectativas o, incluso, las superó ya que el sonido fue en general bueno durante toda la velada, con alguna excepción ligera como el caso de Evocation o quizá al inicio de Cannibal Corpse cuando se oía algo bajo al cantante, los grupos actuaron con gran profesionalidad entregándose al máximo (sobre todo quizá Obscura y los cabezas de cartel), el público se comportó dentro de lo que cabe esperarse en este tipo de eventos de masas, llenando la sala además (sold out), y la organización resultó, y ya es decir, de lo mejor de la noche pues se abrieron puertas con puntualidad y los grupos fueron reventando el escenario según el horario previsto o, incluso, con una ligera antelación sobre el mismo; por ello desde aquí nuestra humilde felicitación para la promotora Rock And Rock pues de este modo da gusto asistir a conciertos que, con estos grandes carteles y el gran desempeño de las bandas, resultan muy amenos y llevaderos para todos.
