Words will easily fail when attempting to describe the sonic worlds created by the Turku-based sextet Callisto, as no language can adequately convey the feelings of pathos and elegance this music evokes. Their sound is deeply rooted in the somewhat somber atmosphere so characteristic of the northern landscape they inhabit, but instead of toying with suicidal themes they seek the beauty in melancholy, and manage to make it sound strangely uplifting. Lyrically Callisto is christian but cryptic, walking a similar path as bands like Trouble or Woven Hand.
Callisto began their musical exploration in 2001 inspired by such ‘post-hardcore’ bands as Neurosis and Breach. In mere eight years they have progressed far past any genre boundaries, from the godly racket of their early days and their first album True Nature Unfolds to the dark cinematic sophistication of Noir and ultimately to their adventurous masterpiece Providence, now released. The most striking change in Callisto’s sound is the new singer Jani Ala-Hukkala, whose varied vocal styles mark a departure from the band’s earlier style. The original vocalist Markus Myllykangas has not quit the band, but will instead concentrate on his guitar playing duties from now on.
Never interested in repeating themselves, Callisto have taken a bold step away from their earlier, more instrumental material and composed a vocal record.

i'm being as objective as i possibly can.. but i hear no repetitiveness whatsoever in Providence.. the compositions are more diverse, the use of instruments is more carefully considered and skillful.. the broadening of vocal use adds to the spectrum of emotions represented.. and the atmospheres just show more colour. but as to your listening of Providence.. 'several times' isn't a real listen. i've given the album probably over 60 spins, and it still feels like there's so much left to hear. with Noir, 10 spins and i felt like i knew all the songs. "As I've stated before, the album repeats itself. Why can't you accept the fact my opinion is different than yours?" - of course i can accept that your opinion is different.. but my problem is that i strongly feel that Providence is being received very unfairly. it's the album of the year in my book, i don't understand how such brilliant music can be ignored by so many

I've listened to the album through several times and I don't find it on the same level as Noir. As I've stated before, the album repeats itself. Why can't you accept the fact my opinion is different than yours? We're both looking for different things in music and more so, Callisto's music. I find Wormwood, Ladderday Saints, and Pathos to be better than any songs on Providence. But, Where the Spirits Tread, Dying Mouths and Providence are all excellent songs (Dying Mouths being one of my favorite Callisto songs)

what on earth do you base your standards for creativity on? Providence has twich as much substance as Noir. and i think you haven't given it a REAL listen because like most others, you can't hear Providence for what it is, but instead struggle to defend their less evolved albums

The only reason I'm calling it that is because I see Noir as the peak of what they've done and I think Providence isn't as good. That's why I consider Noir to be the one album that was the height of their creative process. I'm not saying that a band has to follow a linear progression but bands can either drastically change, progressively change or stay relatively the same. Also, there are moments in time when everything comes together for an artist of any median, and what they create is almost a heightened spiritual experience. Though they may duplicate that in the future, it stands that there's something truly as close to perfection with a certain work. That's the way I see Noir. Though honestly, I still like Ordeal of the Century more.

Why do you think I haven't given it a REAL listen? I just don't think it compares to their previous albums. It's not a bad album by any means but I don't see the what's so praiseworthy. I think Noir was spot on as far as progressing their sound goes. While Providence isn't a bad follow up, I don't think it's the height of their musicianship. I just think it's a good followup. Like I said before, a lot of the songs get into to the same rut and it feels as though the album begins to repeat itself.
