'Ao perder a minha vaga com os Brazilian Boys de Carmem Miranda, vaguei pelas ruas de Las Vegas e sem querer dei de cara com um cartaz do grupo de Cal Tjader, cujos discos conhecia da casa de Bené. Fui até o camarim para dizer que os admirava e, com coragem, aceitei o convite para tocar com eles. No final da noite, virei pianista do conjunto e passei a ganhar em dólar. Se tivesse me transformado em menino de Carmem Miranda, teria ido parar em outra praia.'

'Brigar com síndicos rabugentos é bobeira. Em Los Angeles, uma síndica sem coração vetou, sem qualquer aviso prévio, a entrada no quarto que eu alugava. Sem dinheiro, fui me hospedar em um hotel que ficava em frente ao The Crescendo. A idéia era fugir do frio, descansar um pouco a cabeça e tentar encontrar uma forma de me manter na América. No dia seguinte, desci para fazer meu check-out decidido a apelar para a bondade do recepcionista. Apresentei-me como músico brasileiro e abri o jogo: não tinha dinheiro para pagar a estadia. No mesmo instante, entrou pela porta o cubano Armando Peraza, que tocava tumbadora com Cal Tjader e que foi logo perguntando: Qué pasa, chico? Minutos mais tarde, o cubano já tinha quitado minhas dívidas, e eu conquistado um amigo da ilha de Fidel. Síndicos estressados podem fazer um bem danado.'
