Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

One of Amazon's better-kept secrets is that their site offers an abundance of free music in the form of single tracks from albums and, even better, album-length samplers by smaller labels.

Here are links to some that I've enjoyed listening to/learning from this past year. I should note that these things' shelf life as freebies is not indefinite; there are a couple other excellent samplers that would appear here but are no longer available for free. So, check now, and check back often--new stuff gets added quite often:

Barsuk Records: 2009 Amazon Digital Sampler. Home of indie- and experimental pop. The best-known bands here are probably Death Cab for Cutie, Mates of State, Ra Ra Riot and The Long Winters (whose best song, "Pushover," is here). Other fine groups, though, are Menomena and Viva Voce. Nary a miss here.

Six Degrees Records Global Grooves Sampler. Six Degrees is a fairly well-known dance-oriented "world music" label, and this sampler attempts to represent that breadth. …

Segunda 18 Out – III Festival UFC de Cultura Fui só 2 dias desse Festival! No dia da banda Breculê. Os caras tocam bem e tal, mas não me pega. Acho que tentam ser sofisticados demais, sem conseguir fazer um som básico, um feijão com arroz. Akém de ser extremamente enfadonho. Sempre tenho sono no show deles. Show da Mayra Andrade foi foda!! Voz linda, musicas foda, sotaque lindo, grande presença de palco! Foi foda, queria sempre!! Pantico Rocha fez um som bem bom, com algumas músicas que eu já conhecia de um CD dele! Melhor momento era quando ele pegava na batera!
Na quinta eu fui tocar com a Unidos da Cachorra e depois teve o som da Groovytown! Esse vocalista novo deixou a banda com um som muito mais massa! Curti do começo ao fim!! Na sexta vi o show da CéU. Esperava bem mais dela! Ela é meio toscona no palco e o som tem muito sampler pro meu gosto. Falta pegada. Decepção. Ao contrário do show do Otto!! Eu não gostava dele até então. Mas essa turma de Pernambuco é foda!! Som bem variado…

Eigentlich hatte ich vor gehabt um 11 Uhr ins Theater zupilgern. Aber in Anbetracht der Menschenschlange, die schon sehr lang war, verzichtete ich auf ein Konzert im Theater und begab mich mit meinem Kumpel zum Neumarkt, dem ich Der Black ans Herz gelegt hatte. Am heutigen Morgen, waren die Ansagen nicht ganz so von Giftpfeilen getränkt, aber dieses Konzert ließ den Wunsch nach einem Tonträger größer werden, den ich dann auf dem Markt erwarb. Wie es meinem Kumpel gefallen hat? Er fand es ganz okay. Ja Ja, die Geschmäcker sind verschieden...

Thüringer Folkloretanzensemble Rudolstadt e.V.:

Beinahe wäre es dieses Jahr passiert und ich hätte die Tänzer aus Rudolstadt nicht gesehen (Das wäre das erste mal in meiner tff-Laufbahn). Auch wenn es nicht mein Geschmack ist, was diese Gruppe macht, so gehören sie, wie die Bratwurst auch, zur Tradition dieses Festival und wenn es nur ein Tanz ist den man sieht.
