Tue 10 Nov – White Rabbits, Glass Ghost

Say what you will about the alleged sameness of indie rock, but even without considering a single note, White Rabbits made for a distinct and interesting view. The band consists of six members, and the most consistent line-up employs two drummers, two guitarists, a bassist and a keyboard player, which at least two vocalists on each song. However, the band members switched instruments and stage positions like schoolchildren playing dress-up. “Ooh, I want to wail on a single ride cymbal for two minutes!” “OK, I'll take your guitar then.” Such musical monkeyshines lack any meaning if there aren't good tunes to play along to, so White Rabbits spent most of their hour or so on stage on It's Frightening, a disc that neatly straddles indie-rock sensibility with radio-ready pop energy. The band weren't below making a tremendous racket: the lead guitarist spent a good deal of the set stooped in his corner of the stage with a Whitman's Sampler of effects and pedals, while both drummers thumped with manic intensity. The band kept the crowd engaged throughout, but the clear zen moment was Percussion Gun, the leadoff track to It's Frightening, the last song before the encore, and a bit of a breakout hit.

While the headliners earned their keep, the opening acts followed two different ideologies. The first band out was The Dig, NYC band that played rock as enjoyable as it was predictable. Although a few of the songs were indie-by-numbers, the last number channeled Bryan Adams, of all people. Between the Rabbits and The Dig was a duo called Glass Ghost, who was spending their last evening opening for the Rabbits. Both acts seemed to enjoy their times together and a few members of the Rabbits helped with percussion duties during the last part of Glass Ghost's set. Still, it was hard to reconcile how fundamentally different the two acts were. The Rabbits were a gang playing uptempo noisy pop, whereas Glass Ghost was one guy playing gentle, almost fragile drum fills and another guy playing keyboards and singing. In my personal opinion, I am being generous by assigning the latter action verb. The vocalist had a high, whiny and very limited voice, somewhat like listening to a third-grade girl sing nursery rhymes sporting newly-scraped knees. It was an unappealing mixture of '80s style keyboard pop (think of the background music for Napoleon Dynamite) and twee. Although the small throng assembled stage-side voiced their approval after each number, the applause withered steadily everywhere else.

Alesana, unfortunately none, dont seem to like Alesana at my local music stores

My friend Christina loved her first. She has excellent taste in music, so I looked her up.

Haha...umm...I guess something he sang on American Idol? I don't remember whether I watched the auditions that season or picked up the show later.

3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? (Chris Isaak)
No idea. I don't really pay attention to his lyrics...more his music and his voice.

Haha, I guess I prefer Spice World?

First, how is Billy only #50?! That's disturbing. I love so many of his songs (so many!!), but if I have to pick just one, I always go with The Longest Time. I was so disappointed that he didn't sing it at Wrigley Field last summer.

Mm, yes. Wintersong. It's such a beautiful type of sad, though.

I discovered her through a fantastic lady that I used to work for. She passed away a few years ago, but listening to Laura always makes me think of her.
