This is NOT a comprehensive listing of all the genres ever named. Some genres are defined one way by some, another way by others. And the placement of bands within those genres is a subject of endless debate. So here is a BASIC list that only deals with the genres that are widely used and accepted by both labels and reviewers to classify metal. I have listed the genres in chronological order to make updating the METAL Family Tree a little easier.

EARLY METAL INFLUENCES (1966-1971)
The major influences of metal are American Blues and Rock & Roll music. In 1957-Screamin' Jay HawkinsI Put A Spell On You is considered by most to be the song that pushed American Rock & Roll to go harder and heavier. In 1958 Chuck Berry "The Father of Rock & Roll" thrilled audiences with the autobiographical Johnny B. Goode. British rock bands, such as Cream, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, The Who and The Kinks modified American rock and roll, adding to the standard genre harder sounds, heavier guitar riffs, bombastic drumming and louder vocals. SHOCK ROCK (1968-1983)
Shock rock is a wide umbrella term for artists who combine rock music with elements of theatrical shock value in live performances. 'Shock rock' first appeared as a loose genre term during the early 1970s, referring to glam rock era musicians. HEAVY METAL 1969
The Birth of Heavy Metal is credited to Black Sabbath. A journalist from Rolling Stone Magazine used the term "Heavy Metal" (a phrase from the lyrics of the Steppenwolf song Born To Be Wild to describe the Black Sabbath concert he had just witnessed. I believe the term could have been applied to a number of bands around at that time including Deep Purple and Judas Priest. Black Sabbath and Judas Priest both began in 1969 in Birmingham, England considered the first true heavy metal bands. From there the style evolved and branched into many different genres and subgenres. Heavy metal remains a vital force in music today, with sellout concert tours and CDs selling impressive numbers of copies without any radio airplay or MTV exposure. Black Sabbath * Judas Priest

PROGRESSIVE METAL (1970-PRESENT)
The origins of progressive metal can be traced back to progressive rock bands from the late 1960s and early to mid-1970s such as Yes, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Focus, Renaissance, The Alan Parsons Project, early Queen, Kansas, Atomic Rooster, Uriah Heep, and Rush. GLAM METAL (1973-1990)
Glam metal (also known as hair metal)
is a sub-genre of heavy metal music that arose in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the United States. It was a dominant genre in popular rock music throughout the 1980s and briefly in the early 1990s, combining the flamboyance of glam rock (mostly those related to band image) with the power-chord musical stylings of heavy metal.During the late 1970s and early 1980s, heavy metal spawned several sub-genre forms; glam metal became its most popular manifestation. The first wave of glam metal bands included, Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Helix, W.A.S.P., Night Ranger, Twisted Sister and Stryper. Their music was a bit closer to traditional heavy metal than their younger contemporaries who would eventually emerge, like Warrant, Cinderella and Poison, whose music and image ultimately became synonymous with the genre. ORIGINAL HARD ROCK (1974-1979)
Hard rock is a sub-genre of rock music which has its earliest roots in mid-1960s garage and psychedelic rock and is considerably harder than conventional rock music. EARLY PUNK (1976-1979)
Punk rock is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Rooted in garage rock and other forms of what is now known as protopunk music, punk rock bands eschewed the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. They created fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY (do it yourself) ethic, with many bands self-producing their recordings and distributing them through informal channels. POWER METAL (1976-PRESENT)
Power metal is a style of heavy metal music combining characteristics of traditional metal with thrash metal or speed metal, often within symphonic context. The term refers to two different but related styles: the first pioneered and largely practiced in North America with a harder sound similar to speed metal, and a later more widespread and popular style based in Europe (especially Germany, Italy, Scandinavia) and Japan (early Visual Kei bands) with a lighter, more melodic sound and frequent use of keyboards. POP METAL (1978-PRESENT)
Los Angeles fostered a more insular scene around the Sunset Strip, starting in 1984-1985. This movement eventually spawned bands such as Poison, Faster Pussycat, London and Guns n' Roses. Other bands were associated with that scene's style but actually came from outside of Hollywood; Cinderella and Britny Fox, both Philadelphia bands, are prime examples. There were also some groups who continued in the style originated by the earlier glam metal bands. King Kobra (which would spawn The Bullet Boys, known most notably for their MTV hits "Smooth Up In Ya" and their cover of "For The Love of Money") is a prime example of this. NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL (1979-1983)
The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (frequently abbreviated as NWOBHM)
is a heavy metal music movement that started in the late 1970s, in Britain, and achieved some international attention by the early 1980s. The era developed as a reaction in part to the decline of early heavy metal bands such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. NWOBHM bands toned down the blues influences of earlier acts, increased the tempo, and adopted a "tougher" sound, taking a more hardcore approach to its music. DOOM METAL (1980-Present)
Typically employs very slow tempos, and low tuned guitars. The music, and lyrics tend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom. The genre is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, who formed a prototype for doom metal with songs such as "Black Sabbath" and "Into the Void". During the first half of the 1980s, a number of bands from England (Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General)
and the United States (Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble) defined doom metal as a distinct genre.

ORIGINAL HARDCORE (1980-1986)
Hardcore is a subgenre of punk rock that originated in North America and the UK in the late 1970s. The new sound was generally thicker, heavier and faster than earlier punk rock. The songs are usually short, fast, and loud, covering topics such as politics, personal freedom, violence, social alienation, straight edge, war, and the hardcore subculture itself. Hardcore spawned several fusion genres and subgenres, some of which had mainstream success, such as melodic hardcore, metalcore, post-hardcore, sludge metal and Deathcore.D.O.A. * The Exploited * Bad Brains * The Misfits * GBH * Discharge * Dead Kennedys * Minor Threat * Black Flag * The Damned * The Masque

BLACK METAL (1981-Present)
An extreme subgenre of heavy metal. Usually makes use of fast tempos, high-pitched shrieking vocals, and unconventional song structures. First Wave included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. A Second Wave emerged in the early 1990s, which consisted primarily of Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortaland Emperor. This scene developed the black metal style into a distinct genre. STONER METAL (1982-PRESENT)
Stoner rock and stoner metal are interchangeable terms describing sub-genres of rock and metal music. It combines elements of psychedelic rock, blues-rock and doom metal. Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo and features low-tuned guitars, a bass-heavy sound, melodic vocals, and 'retro' production. THRASH METAL (1983-PRESENT)
Thrash metal (sometimes referred to simply as thrash)
, is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal that is characterized by its fast tempo and aggression. Thrash metal songs typically use fast, percussive and low-register guitar riffs, overlaid with shredding-style lead work Thrash metal lyrics often deal with social issues using visceral and blunt language, an approach which partially overlaps with the hardcore genre. GRINDCORE (1987-PRESENT)
Grindcore, often shortened to grind, is an extreme music genre that emerged during the mid-late 1980s. It draws inspiration from some of the most abrasive music genres - including death metal, industrial music, noise and the more extreme varieties of hardcore punk. Grindcore is characterized by heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, extreme tempos, frequently accompanied by blast beats, songs often lasting no more than two minutes (some are seconds long) , and vocals which consist of growls and high-pitched screams. DEATH METAL (1985-PRESENT)
Death metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal. It typically employs fast tempos, heavily distorted guitars, deep growling vocals, morbid lyrics, blast beat drumming, and complex song structures with multiple tempo changes. Alternative metal is an eclectic form of heavy metal music that gained popularity in the early 1990s alongside grunge. It is characterized by some heavy metal trappings (most notably heavy riffs) , but usually with a pronounced experimental edge, including unconventional lyrics, odd time signatures, more syncopation than typical metal, unusual technique, a resistance to conventional approaches to heavy music and an incorporation of a wide range of influences outside of the metal music scene. METALCORE (1985-PRESENT)
Metalcore is a term used to describe fusion genres that incorporate elements of the hardcore punk and heavy metal genres. The term is a portmanteau of heavy metal and hardcore punk with emphasis on breakdowns slower, intense passages conducive to moshing. GRUNGE (1988-1993)
Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle Sound)
is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in the Seattle area. Inspired by hardcore punk, heavy metal and indie rock, grunge is generally characterized by heavily distorted electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics, and apathetic or angst-filled lyrics. The grunge aesthetic is stripped-down compared to other forms of rock music, and many grunge musicians were noted for their unkempt appearances and rejection of theatrics. INDUSTRIAL METAL (1988-PRESENT)
Industrial metal is a musical genre that draws from industrial music and heavy metal. It is usually centered around repeating metal guitar riffs, sampling, synthesizer or sequencer lines, and distorted vocals. Founding industrial metal groups include Ministry, Godflesh, and KMFDM. The style became increasingly commercially successful in the 1990s. Subsequently, it is most well-known in various European permutations. Industrial metal's impact has been reflected in many other genres of music, including hardcore punk, glam metal, and hip-hop.Ministry * White Zombie * Godflesh * Nine Inch Nails * Fear Factory * Marilyn Manson * Static-X Ministry, Rammstein, and Dope.

FOLK METAL (1990-Present)
Folk metal includes the widespread use of traditional instruments, and singing styles. The earliest exponent of folk metal was the English band Skyclad. Their debut album The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth was released in 1990. It was not until 1994 and 1995 that other early contributors in the genre began to emerge from different regions of Europe as well as in Israel. Among these early groups, the Irish band Cruachan, the Israeli band Orphaned Land and the German band Subway to Sally each spearheaded a different regional variation that over time became known as Celtic metal, oriental metal and mittelalter rock respectively. Despite their contributions, folk metal remained little known with few representatives during the 1990s. It was not until the early 2000s when the genre exploded into prominence, particularly in Finland with the efforts of such groups as Finntroll, Ensiferum, Korpiklaani and Moonsorrow.

GOTH METAL (1990-PRESENT)
Gothic metal or goth metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music. In some instances it combines the aggression of heavy metal with the dark melancholy aesthetics of gothic rock. The genre originated during the early 1990s in Europe as an outgrowth of death/doom, a fusion of death metal and doom metal. The music of gothic metal is diverse with bands known to adopt the gothic approach to different styles of heavy metal music. Lyrics are generally melodramatic and mournful with inspiration from gothic fiction as well as personal experiences. Norwegian band Theatre of Tragedy developed the "beauty and the beast" aesthetic of combining aggressive male vocals with clean female vocals, a contrast that has since been adopted by many gothic metal groups. NU METAL (1994-PRESENT)
A style that emerged in the mid 1990s and combines heavy metal with elements of alternative rock and funk, often with hip-hop influences. Europe / Stormwind / Wings of Tomorrow (1) / Feb 1984

Listening to this band reminds me of why I think the tags "hair metal" or "hair band" can be dangerous, potentially hiding some good material from bands that formed before the glam style got popular around 1986. Today's selection is a case study.

To me, "hair metal" implies a visual look of teased hair, makeup, spandex, and headbands; a musical style of power chord riffs, catchy hooks, and shouted or sing-along choruses; and lyrics about (a) partying (b) girls (c) partying with girls (d) rocking hard about partying with girls.

There certainly was a lot of this stuff in the back half of the 80s - what we thrash metal/speed metal/nwobhm freaks of the time joined our heroes in calling "posers" - and it wasn't all limited to the L.A. sunset strip, either.

Certainly a number of bands come to mind whose success was pretty much limited to the hair metal heyday: Poison (for sure the #1 leader), Warrant, Cinderella, Britny Fox, Firehouse, Winger, Dangerous Toys, Danger Danger. It's amazing that I can ever remember that many, but this stuff provided the soundtrack to undergrad dorm parties in the late 80s. We weren't gonna attract "babes" playing Nuclear Assualt or Morbid Angel...

There were other bands which had this tag applied to them simply because they had certain elements of the look* - like long or poofy hair - or the lyrics - like songs about love - but clearly did not fall into the category: Great White, Tesla, or Guns N' Roses, for instance.

Then there were bands like Europe, who started out hard rock as hell, but because they added keyboards and added poppy hooks and found massive success during the hair metal years, they've fallen into the hair metal bin forever.

On the surface, it's not entirely obvious that they weren't. They did have the look, although it was more the "ripped jeans and long jacket" look of Bon Jovi than the spandex and makeup look of Cinderella...


...and their two top 20 albums, The Final Countdown and Out of This World, especially their two top 10 singles from the former, The Final Countdown and Carrie, sound like prototypical "hair metal." (Hey, it was those two albums that I purchased first...on party-friendly cassettes...for said purpose. I'll even admit that I still love Rock The Night!)

But by the time of those, the band had been around for a number of years and had two previous albums that didn't sound like those very much at all. Basically, judging those earlier efforts by the latter would be the same approach as judging the sound of On Through the Night and High 'n' Dry by the sound of Hysteria and Adrenalize. Not.

Europe first formed in Stockholm as Force in 1979. In 1982, Joey Tempest's girlfriend entered them into a Swedish rock talent contest, which they proceeded to win on the basis of In The Future To Come and The King Will Return, neither of which sound like hair metal but do kick ass. That got them their deal with their first label, and they changed the name to Europe.

The debut Europe followed in 1983, including those two winning songs and the awesome Seven Doors Hotel. The album with today's selection - and another bad-ass tune Scream of Anger** - was released the following year. The sound of these highlighted tracks kind of reminds me of Thunder and Lightning-era Thin Lizzy, which I suppose isn't surprising given that Thin Lizzy were a big influence on them. Then other times Joey's vocals kinda remind me of Mike Reno (Loverboy), so there you have it.

It was after those albums that the keyboards began to take over, and when they hooked up with Journey's producer, the sound that brought them their success - and charges of sell-out - emerged. The Final Countdown went Triple Platinum over here and the title track hit #1 in 25 countries.

Once the keyboards and pop sound became dominant, John Norum bolted. Understandable, but other than a stint on Don Dokken's Up From the Ashes and the really bad Dokken album Long Way Home, I've never ever heard of any of his other work or solo albums. Have I missed anything? (Let me know!)

I never bothered to get Prisoners in Paradise. The dorm parties were long over by then and the sound was way too soft for even that. I've heard anything from either of the two albums released since the reunion five years ago, and they've certainly been a Europe-only band, completely ignored here in the States. Have I missed anything? (Let me know!)

If you don't have any but want the essentials, Rock The Night - The Very Best Of Europe is probably all you'll need. Or more than you need, likely, if all you want is the early hard rock, in which case you only need the first two albums.

*From that line of thinking, then, I've oftened wondered: was anybody so clueless as to use looks as a basis for actually applying this line of thinking to, say, Ozzy Osbourne during his "glam"-looking years of The Ultimate Sin, as shown in The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years?

We'll also take a listen to some bands inspired and influenced by Skynyrd, like Charlie Daniels Band, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and Doc Holiday.

Then at 5:00, ZO2 is going to stop by the studio for a chat, and we might talk them into an acoustic performance while they're there.
