  • A time for reflection, or something

    Set 26 2009, 21h18 por pink--squares

This year I have enjoyed so much good music, I'm actually really excited about the mere thought of compiling an end of year 'best of' list, maybe this is why I don't have many friends. It's been my favourite year for music I can remember for a long time. This is the first year I have used last.fm with any degree of regularity so I figured as some sort of pointless preamble I would revisit my favourites from 2008 since this page seems to be developing quite nicely into a portal of all my musical goings on (which I guess is the intention, huh).

    2008

    Album of the year:
    1 M83 - Saturdays = Youth

    Closely followed by:
2 Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
    3 WHY? - Alopecia
4 Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs
    5 Beach House - Devotion
6 Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
7 Mystery Jets - Twenty One
    8 Kyte - Kyte
    9 Vampire Weekend -Vampire Weekend
10 Brightblack Morning Light - Motion To Rejoin

    Back in December, yeah?

Thu 11 Jun – Northside Festival Opening Party with Brightblack Morning Light

Studio B could be considered a nice little music venue. All neat and tidy, whitewashed with a sad yet endearing fountain on the rooftop bar. Yet the bottom half feels like some luxurious opium den, with couches far more comfortable than anything I've experienced anywhere else. This, as it turns out, was the perfect place to see Brightblack Morning Light and their ilk.

Mariee Sioux came up first, and as soon as she spoke into the microphone to introduce herself, several couples around me simultaneously stated "she has a cute voice". They didn't even know the half of it. So long as she kept to singing slowly, it came out perfectly, like an articulate friend singing. Her guitar playing skills suited her needs, and were secondary to her singing anyway. And a few times, she even came close to sort of a female Tim Buckley, which is a tremendous compliment coming from someone so enamored with his work. A really good opener, and easily the most conscious performer of the night. Even when her friend did accompanying guitar with mixed results (though he was good, veering into Stars of the Lid territory with a vocalist isn't a great idea), it still remained fascinating.

Zomesseems to have had some fans out there, I don't know how however. An extremely short set (like 20 minutes or so) with various members of the audience laughing at whatever the point of such unengaged music might be (a critique of elevator music, who knows). Can't say this guy really did it for me or for most of the people.

Brightblack Morning Light was the last up. Basically, they couldn't be more mellow if they tried (and of course, they wouldn't, since trying would mean they would have to expend effort at some point). Grooves that would exist in murky, smoky rooms, that sort of remain static for almost ten minutes. This is time traveling music, in that it can pass by without any conception that time might of passed. It exists with no exact beginning or end, just whenever they feel they've had enough. Definitely an unusual approach to music, to remain so focused and unchanging. I must be honest, they've honed whatever weirdness they were trying to achieve. When I heard these people came from middle of nowhere Alabama and moved to middle of nowhere Northern California, I figured made sense. They definitely have a sound unique to themselves, just not sure if it would really be active enough for most people.

Overall, an alright, but not exceptional concert. Nothing here really struck me as something worth searching out. Possibly the first act attracted my greatest interest, and the sets became less and less conscious as the night progressed. Zomes might be good, but their set sounded like so much else around, but with less thought. If you ever need music for your opium den, Brightblack Morning Light might work.

Jesus fuck am I bored to be doing this shit.

    1. How did you get into 29?
Wire: I read the review of the triple pack of Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154 on Pitchfork and downloaded it on the spot. The descriptions of the albums combined with the fact that the first two had (rare) perfect 10s made them seem irresistible. I wasn't disappointed.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
TocarSleep was the first track I heard by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, 40+ plays later, it's just as transcendent as the first time I heard it. Nothing feels better than when the horns kick in shortly after the 16-minute mark.

    3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33?
Um. All of TocarAgoraphobia? Thanks, Deerhunter.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49?
    The Lemon of Pink

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
I own all of Stars' studio albums, and Set Yourself on Fire is easily my favorite, but Heart and In Our Bedroom After The War have some great songs as well.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Wow, that's actually a really tough question. R.E.M. is one of those scarily consistent bands, and just about any random single would be just as worthy of the title as any other. But, here are a couple from which I could pull a favorite, maybe: TocarThe One I Love, TocarOrange Crush, Losing My Religion, and Man on the Moon

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
Well, being that New Japan Philharmonic is actually an orchestra, there are probably tons of them! I listen to Symphony of Evangelion the most by them, which has quite a few sad "songs."

    8. What is your favorite album by 15?
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory easily takes the cake, although my favorite songs by Dream theater can be found on Octavarium

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
Everyone knows that A Day in the Life is the Beatles' greatest song, bar none. Lennon, McCartney, and orchestral bliss.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
There isn't really a Led Zeppelin song that I would describe as making me "happy," besides maybe Rock and Roll. Um. Oh, and The Crunge, maybe.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
Admittedly, High Society is the only album I've heard by Enon, so I'd have to say that.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Sleepwalker is probably my favorite and also their best, but I also love Ghost Love Score and The Siren. Actually, these might as well be equal, but Tarja's voice in Sleepwalker is strikingly beautiful. I'm staunchly opposed to New Nightwish.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
My favorite memory involving Neutral Milk Hotel is probably riding in my friend's car, singing along to 1945.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38?
One Evening is probably my favorite Feist song by virtue of the fact that she sounds incredibly sexy in it.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Nothing by Brightblack Morning Light really jumps out – it's mostly serene and peaceful, which I think is part of their appeal.

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
I don't even know who my 25th most-listened to artist is, but I can tell you that the answer is 0.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
I know it probably makes me a total square, but TocarFloat On was honestly the first song I ever heard by Modest Mouse. Yeah, yeah, I'm a sad excuse for a indie kid.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
Homogenic will forever be Björk's masterpiece.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Sarah is probably my favorite member of Arcade Fire. Violin is instrumental to the emotional impact of their music, especially in their early work, and they're lucky to have such a talented violinist.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
    No.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27?
A good memory involving Elliott Smith... hrm, watching Good Will Hunting for the first time with my boyfriend comes to mind, which features a number of his songs.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
Cloud Cult, hah! That's a funny question. I'll go with either You Got Your Bones to Make a Beat, Washed Your Car, or Take Your Medicine.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
    By Alkaline Trio? I haven't a clue.

    24. What is your favorite album by 18?
9 Times That Same Song by Love Is All[artist]. Such a spaz album.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21?
TocarAin't No Way features Aretha's best vocals on record, but she does a chilling cover of A Change Is Gonna Come as well. Other than that, TocarChain Of Fools (especially the unedited version).

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
TocarLovefool was my first exposure to The Cardigans, as I'm sure it was for most.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3?
Not to be cliché, but Daydream Nation really is Sonic Youth's best album.

    28. What is your favorite song by 2?
That's a hard question considering I love a lot of them for different reasons. I'll go ahead and say that TocarCause = Time is Broken Social Scene's best song, but I really love TocarKC Accidental, TocarStars and Sons, Ibi Dreams Of Pavement (A Better Day), 7/4 (Shoreline), TocarFire Eye'd Boy, TocarWindsurfing Nation, etc. Really, there's not a bad track on either You Forgot It in People or Broken Social Scene.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
I'm pretty sure that [track arist=The Flaming Lips]Do You Realize??[/track] was the first song I ever heard by The Flaming Lips, but I can't be certain.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8?
Argh! Picking favorites for the higher-up bands is so difficult. For Architecture in Helsinki, it's either Do The Whirlwind, Maybe You Can Owe Me, or Like It Or Not.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
    None!!

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Lacuna Coil is a metal band – they don't specialize in happy. But I'll say that TocarStars comes the closest.

    33. What is your favorite album by 12?
My God. Sigur Rós' Ágætis byrjun is so damn good.

    34. What is the worst song by 45?
Eh, Dane Cook's a comedian, and I can't think of a bit that I particularly dislike by him at the moment, but they're not all good; that's for sure.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
TocarHigh Rise was the first song I ever heard by Ladytron because it's the first song on Witching Hour

    36. What is your favorite album by 48?
Buh. It's been so long since I've listened to Tori Amos that I honestly couldn't tell you.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live?
    Zilch.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36?
Bell Orchestre? Probably Recording a Tunnel (The Horns Play Underneath the Canal).

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
First song I ever heard by Koji Kondo? Hah! The theme music to Super Mario Bros., of course!

    40. What is your favorite album by 7?
Oh, this couldn't be any easier. Loveless is My Bloody Valentine's masterwork.

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
No, actually, my favorite songs by We Are Scientists are actually somewhat depressing.

    42. What is your favorite album by 41?
Their only album, Give Up. Song would have been a much harder endeavor for The Postal Service.

    43. What is your favorite song by 24?
Romantic Rights really gets me going. <3 Death From Above 1979

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46?
Radiohead? Ranting among friends about how they're no tthe second coming, and – for the most part – make really horrible music.

    45. What is your favorite song by 35?
TocarLove Reign O'er Me takes the cake for The Who

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Oh, God, is there! I'm Always in Love by Wilco puts a ridiculous grin on my face at times.

    47. What is your favorite album by 4?
    The Woods, Sleater-Kinney's swansong.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37?
I don't know any of the names of Caesars members.

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43?
Wet and Rusting was my first song by Menomena at the recommendation of a friend. I do like their music a lot, but it's not like Wet and Rusting at all, for the most part.

    50. How many albums do you own by 20?
Serena Maneesh? I own one album and one EP.
