Os Booker T & the MG’s, é uma banda de Rhythm and blues, criada em Memphis, em 1962, por Booker T. Jones (orgão), Steve Cropper (guitarra), Al Jackson (bateria) e Lewis Steinberg (baixo) e Mark Dunn (baixo, 1964). Ficaram conhecidos como a banda de estúdio da gravadora Stax Records, por trás de álbuns lançados por outros artistas, como Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas, Albert King, e Sam & Dave. A banda terminou em 1971.

História

Booker T. Jones começou a trabalhar na Stax Records, em Memphis, como saxofonista, em 1960. Em 1962 a banda Booker T. & the MGs foi formada como a banda da casa, na qual o líder da banda, Booker T. trabalhava. Steve Cropper e Donald Dunn, que foram membros da banda Mar-Keys, e tocaram no hit de 1961 Last Night. Dunn continuou no Mar-Keys até 1964, quando substituiu Lee Steinberg, baixista original da banda.

No começo dos anos 60, a banda fez a parte instrumental de Carla Thomas (Gee Whiz) e seu pai Rufus Thomas (Walking the dog). A reputação como uma banda independente veio com seu hit Green Onions, em 1962.

Durante os próximos 7 anos, o grupo gravou independentemente alguns álbuns e outros pela Stax enquanto corriam atrás de sua própria carreira. Booker T. Jones trabalhou com o produtor William Bell e co-compôs o blues clássico Born Under a Bad Sign.

Hmm, I have two versions of Time is Tight on my computer. One is 4:58 and the other is 3:16 (and done in a more soul-ish way). Any ideas on how to separate song tags? Which one should be renamed?

i think overall it's a shame that they only have 500,000 plays and 90% of that number is green onions (which is a great track). they were so much better than a 1-hit wonder band though.
