I'm very bored and i dont know how many people actually bother to read my journal on here but i thought i'd do an expanded style sequal to my previous entry...

1. Damien Rice - O
I'll start with mr rice since i'm currently listening to him. Haven't listened to this album in so long and also just relised that i have never actually listened to the album all the way through before (until right now). The guy's got a really nice voice and the music is really pretty and kind of rustic, the mix of acoustic guitar and strings works well for me. Great songs to sing along too.

2. Martina Topley-Bird - Quixotic
I love martina, i love her voice and i love her style. Quixotic mixes "trip hop", rock, electronics and soul together to great effect and her voice has a fantastic presence and is very recognisable. The follow up The Blue God is also amazing, however Quoxotic is a lot more varied is style and mood.

3. The Radio Dept. - Lesser Matters
Bought this about a week or so ago based on the 3 tracks i had heard on the Marie Antoinette Soundtrack (one of which Keen on Boys is on this, thier first album). As far as indie rock goes i'm not much of a fan, but with the wall of sound fuzziness, the great drum machine work and a really soft male vocal, TRD really caught my attention. Going to have to investigate their other releases.

4. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Kaleidoscope
My favourite siouxsie and the banshees album changes from week to week, last week it was The Scream, this week its Kaleidoscope. A damn-near perfect album of post-punk tracks with some dabbling in electronics. Happy House and Christine are (of course) classic tracks but for me at the moment Red Light steals the show with its electronic stomp and great lyrics (also for those who don't know, have a listen to Red Light and Santogold's My Superman back to back, a mash-up must be done).

5. Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
As embaressing as this is (especially since my boyfriend was brought up on her music), i've only really starting to get into her music. She was always there and i knew i loved the singles that i had heard but its only been in the past few weeks i have properly investigated the albums. HOL is probalby an obvious choice but its a good place to start, i love the first part of the album, Cloudbusting is just an amzingly beautiful song and the rest is just as enjoyable. The second half, entitled "the ninth wave" is just as brilliant, a concept piece: "the story of a woman who is lost at sea, facing death by drowning, and the tortured night she spends in the water" (wikipedia). Personally, thats one of my worst nightmares, and to top off the scare factor, Waking the Witch is just fantastically creepy and bizarre and Hello Earth features a piece of classical music used in Werner Herzog's 1979 remake of Nosferatu which creeps me out. I wish i had become obsessed with this woman sooner.

I've actually been working on the "perfect party playlist" for a few years now, with different rates of success. I obviously have quite a different music taste from the people I usually hang out with.

Now, my latest task is to play an amateur, "gonzo" DJ at a party our class organizes. It's supposed to be a low budget, but very mainstream oriented event. So, what I want to do is play music most people will recognize, like, and dance to, while staying inside the area of undisputable quality. This, for me, means no commercial house, no other "worn out melodies with cheap beats underneath" bullshit and so on.

My general idea was to start from danceable classics of 50s rock'n'roll (Elvis Presley, Bill Haley and his Comets, Ike Turner maybe), then go for some Chuck Berry and The Beatles twist, throw in some Pulp Fiction style surf (Dick Dale and His Del-Tones)... You see where I am heading with this :)
So I need some help, as I only know the most obvious songs by all these artists, and as good as none by the following: Little Richard, Fats Domino, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley, James Brown... Any tips are appreciated!

Of course, I'd throw in some 70s and 80s music too (yeah, this is where the quality dispute begins :D): Boney M., Billy Idol, Baccara, ABBA, Cameo, Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Kool and the Gang, grease soundtrack... Any tips on what I could use there? Again, I know the "usual suspects" and am looking for some fresh, maybe a bit unusual song ideas :) And what about the "dark side" of the 80s: Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen...

The third category is danceable, funky tracks in the style of Fatboy Slim, Jamiroquai, Touch and Go's über-hit Would You... ? Any songs of that kind I should be aware of? I will, of course, try to infiltrate some of the party-plausible indie rock tracks... Hope that succeeds. Ideas similar to the hits of M.I.A., Hot Chip, MGMT, LCD Soundsystem...?
