i'd like to correct Gregh61 spain and parts of porutgal were under the flag the Umayyad's Empire in the west ..not the Ottomans ... this song is more Gypsy than arabic-turkish even they did connect in romania and spain..amazing song my Dylan's favorite.

This song is ridiculously good. Love the melody and it's a lyrical masterpiece. That opening line where he sings with an almost middle-eastern accent it's just beautiful. You can hardly hear what he's saying but that's my favourite part of the song. I have to admit I prefer the album version to any of the live versions.
