Listening to the album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" released in May 1963 by Columbia, Dylan's second studio album. This album established Dylan as a true Folk songwriter

A masterpiece. Written in 1962-1963, so ahead of its time, and stunning.

I can see someone like Tracy Chapman getting off on this track and having a prophecy that she shall be a folk singer, although her singing reminds me of Joan Armatrading. Let's call Tracy Chapman the Love child of Bob and Joan. Not a bad deal!

To see through the eyes of fear is to see only what you want to see. To see through the eyes of awareness, on the other hand, sees only what is happening in the present. All that you can experience is the unknown, and you can experience it either through fear or through awareness. Over the years, Bob Dylan's lyrics have made me not only aware of the unknown but comfortable with it. "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" was one of Dylan's best songs for contracting the fear of the unknown with the awareness of the unknown; he shows many examples of people who experience the unknown through the eyes of fear while his character experiences the unknown throughout the eyes of awareness.

I agree with everything said on this page, but would add that this song was the product of Bob spending all his time for years at folk clubs and listening to rambling musicians learning his trade, and that the melody comes from a very long American tradition in which political points are encompassed in very simple, but very structured forms. The power of the song comes from this incredibly freeing form, which allows you to just continue piling on the images to Kingdom come.

I found that if a person never had a Dylan album, "Blood on the Tracks" would be a good starter. Eventually, they can go back and forward through his catalogue and discover everything else.
