    Celebrated Poetry in Music

I’ve compiled a list of songs and albums by musicians who have taken poetry from established and renowned writers (whether only in their respective countries or in a worldly sense) and put them to music. The list didn’t turn out to be as long as I had initially hoped, but for anyone who is big into poetry – this should keep you busy for a little while. Feedback is definitely welcome (especially if someone locates me some songs using Robert Browning, Walt Whitman, or Emily Dickinson which I’m really surprised I couldn’t find).

  • Album of the Year 2009, AND ITS NOT ANIMAL COLLECTIVE

    Jan 24 2009, 9h33 por Lortagreb

It’s clear upon first listen to this follow up to their last album that they've have not altered any slightest thing to their sound, and why should they? They’ve mastered their sound and production and topped themselves with this early January release, it's fucking perfect. Flawless, polished production. Great creative song writing. The front man has been consistent releasing new material with his various side projects, and whilst he’s revealed that this is his most personal album yet, it doesn’t seem evident upon first listen. His harsh and demonic voice cutting through you whilst the bass pounds into your ears, leaving no chance of catching a breath as a swift jump into the dirty underground sound of the next track, ups the ante and the relentless bass and monotonous robotics, these are some fucking promising first tracks. The dissonant experimental sound manipulation is just cutting through your ears. It’s easy to critisize the lyrical content of this album; some tracks have some sub-par lyrics, some even having none at all and just manages offensively addictive by their title, but what it really is; lyrically dark, threatening, and very fitting in some respects. This isn't lyrics, this is music. Music has nothing to do with lyrics, if you only want lyrics go read some teenage poetry on myspace.

Easily the album of the year, nothing could possibly beat this, and also one of the best industrial albums ever made.

    FUCK YAR AWESOME COVER TOO

  • MELLO CLUB Christmas Party with ROGER WOOTTON (Comus) and PIU

    Dez 2 2008, 19h44 por sjugge

straight from the Melloboat MySpace blog (Swedish version below)

    Dear friends!
Now is it less than 48 hours left to the MELLO CLUB Christmas party at Café Edenborg in old town in Stockholm.
I am filled excitment for what Roger Wootton and PiU has on their repertoire.
Roger Wootton, singer in the English band Comus will join us for two days of immortal music. He is backed up by PIU which is one of the most promising bands from Sweden these days.

Have received some info that they will perform music from both FIRST UTTERANCE and the TO KEEP FROM CRYING album. Have also heard that they will perform a never before heard COMUS song called "Out of the Coma". All guests will be served delicious GLÖGG and Swedish pepper cakes.

Roger Wootton who is a phenomenal artist/illustrator has created a spectacular MELLO CLUB Christmas Card and a numbered and signed painting of a cruel Santa Claus. These paintings can be bought with or without frame. A limited quantity of the LP version of Kraftwerk..s - Organisation Tone Float will be available if someone wants a Roger Wootton signed copy. (Roger painted the front sleeve on this highly collectable LP)

I am blessed to have such a wonderful honour to present the very first solo performance of Roger Wotton and PIU.
Welcome all good friends to a (anti) Christ mass party with the godfather of frightening lyrics in the Death Metal vein!!!

    Date: 4-5th of December
    Time: 19:00 CET.
Venue: Café Edenborg / Stora Nygatan 35 (old Town) Stockholm.
    Phone: +46 - 733 - 870 950

    Swedish version

Sabu Martinez - "Burned Sugar" (melloCD-026) and
Sabu Martinez / Sahib Shihab - "Winds & Skins" (melloCD-027)

Burned Sugar was recorded live in front of an audience at the Swedish Radio (Stockholm) in april 1973. These recordings are something really spectacular.

    The line-up:
Sabu Martinez: Bongos, congas, bukoba, talking drums, tympani, gong, all sound and percussion effects /
Bernt Rosengren: Sax & flute /
    Wlodek Gulgowski: Electric piano /

Winds & Skins was recorded 13th of December 1978 (exactly one month before Sabu´s untimely death)
On the Winds and Skins recording Shihab Shihab delivers some of the funkiest and most mind-blowing notes ever performed on an electrified sax, steadily backed up by five suggestive percussionists. The myth that Sahib Shihab never played electrified sax can hereby once and for all be dismissed!
A more unique session has never taken place in Sweden. Two top giants in the world of jazz goes berserk in the very end of their lives!

    The line-up:
Sabu Martinez: Bongos, congas, bukoba, talking drums, tympani, gong, all sound and percussion effects /
Sahib Shihab: Sax & flute /
Johnny Martinez: Various drums & percussion /
René Martinez: Various drums & percussion /
Daoud Amin: Various drums & percussion /
Ivan Krillzarin: Various drums & percussion /

The circle will be closed through the bonus track. These bonus track includes the very first session that Sabu Martinez recorded in Sweden.
He recorded this tune for a radio program just after his departure to Stockholm 1967. By his side he had Christer Boustedt on sax and Palle Danielsson on double bass.

  • Atmospheric Music, Chapter V

    Ago 2 2008, 8h31 por Bergatroll

    Atmospheric Music, Chapter V
    Capitalized For Awesome.

Atmosphere is something that is generally subjective and can manifest itself in many ways. This is the fifth installment of a journal series where I rant on, recommend and explain some albums that I found to be very atmospheric in their nature. This is NOT a journal where I talk about my favorite albums overall. To read the previous journal Click Here.

Here are a few albums from artists that I've been obsessing over recently:

    17. Infidel?/Castro! - "Bioentropic Damage Fractal"
    Experimental / Avant-garde / Noise / Post-Rock

Experimental? Yes, to the point of plain weird and risking an overdose. I love this album so much I'm almost willing to call it my favorite album ever even though I hate all this "my favorite genre is" or "my favorite artist is" etc. etc. No ill will towards you who namedrop your favorites but I don't find my taste to be so easily pigeonholed. Bioentropic Damage Fractal is a melting pot of mixed sounds, sometimes done with "proper instruments" sometimes just whatever. From random and chaotic electronic grind to 20 minute long post-rockish ambient noise pieces. I really like the grind tracks, they're fun, constantly changing leaving you not knowing what to think really, but it's at the long atmospheric ambient operas where it's really at considering what kind of journal this is. The contrast is enormous, from extremely distractive grind to slow soundscape music. Which might answer the question why they're so unknown, I mean, someone who's into the one polarity wouldn't instinctively like the other, but then I guess to seek out this kind of music you would have to rather open-minded in the first place. It's just hard for me to fathom that something this great has gotten so little attention, hence I make up theories as to why that might be, it's a natural reflex, makes life easier.

"Let's make a song, start it out almost silent but continuously builds up an tension which rapidly expands the whole time for ten minutes" seriously... How fucking awesome isn't that for a song concept? It's not really that generic reverb-drenched ambient which you imagine it would be either, it's a more dry and noisy sound collage thing. There are so fucking many layers of sound, properly done panning as well, with good balance and sometimes psychedelic of nature, which just enhances the way this monstrosity of sound devours you. It's a gloomy, malicious, melancholic, chaotic double-disc opus which - if something - would suit as a soundtrack for the decay of mankind.

To sum this up: Avant-Garde is for the cool kids.

    18. Bohren & der Club of Gore - "Black Earth"
    Doom Jazz / (Dark) Ambient

Long droning ambient tones immediately captivate me as I begin to listen. The funeral-paced drums sets the tempo of my breathing. The rhodes piano plays a dark melody for me, an emotional one. Bass tones sounding as if they had traveled from the most unfathomable depths of the abyss has begun to tremble me. The bass is later on played with a bow which creates what can only be described as a fearsome sound. The almost silent buzzy noise created by the brush fondling the snare is tingling my ears. Ah the sax... I don't know how long it's been playing for I have forgotten when it begun. It plays me a lonely tune. Which isn't necessarily grieving the absence of company. It's a tone which I can relate to. I frequently find myself to be extremely tired of, and unwilling to participate in the social play that where we all must assume our "role" to survive in today's society. Since when was "survival of the fittest" exchanged with "survival of the most fake"? I often find myself trying to isolate myself from others, however I always fail because I am a wheel in society. Therefore this tone represents to me, a sense of belonging, I have found what I was looking for. It does not make me feel ecstatic, elated, hearty or happy. Yet despite all it's melancholic glory, it does make my heart pound hard and in a way makes me feel happy.
That was a slightly romanticized rant but whatever rite?

    19. ZandoZ Corp. - "Suffocating Egos"
Rhythmic Noise / IDM / Industrial

Suffocating Egos' atmosphere is very futuristic in it's nature, though it's not the corny sci-fi sound you might be imagining, it is a dark and dystopian cyberpunk atmosphere. Despite that imagining what kind of music would accompany a book or something is something so subjective, it is how I interpret it. I bet that people who are as familiar and appreciate cyberpunk-fiction as much as I do would agree. This highly unknown Brazilian combines rhythmic noise, IDM and industrial into a quite disturbing concoction. Industrial melodies and IDM ambiances with chaotic rhythms put on top, perhaps too noisy to be called IDM rhythms. The melodies usually aren't very special and kept quite simple but they're something that makes otherwise chaotic music pleasant to listen to... Well, pleasant in a subjective way :} I wouldn't exactly call this easy-listening if you understand what I mean. Anyways, what makes the melodies good is the great variety in sound with no melody sounding as the other. As well as how those are weaved together in all the layers to together create what is the mechanic sounding atmosphere of Suffocating Egos.

    20. Genghis Tron - "Board Up The House"
    Experimental / Electronic / Grindcore

Though admittedly it's far from my favorite Genghis Tron album. I much prefer the more direct approach of Dead Mountain Mouth. Despite that, I believe this to be their most atmospheric album hence why I chose this one. It feels pretty much like a natural successor to their older works and takes a more progressive approach than Dead Mountain Mouth which took a more progressive approach than Cloak of Love which was purely experimental. While all this progressive wankery with complicated fingerplay and chaotic transitions between rhythms and riffs is more than often frowned upon, I personally think Genghis Tron does such a good job at this, keeping it at a moderate level, that I think this just doesn't fall under the same umbrella. Allow me to further elaborate; this is GOOD while the other is BAD which leads us to the conclusion that Genghis Tron =/= Other.

Another thing issue I would like to address is metalheads problem with drum machines. They bitch and whine because it is done electronically and therefore not true and what the fuck who cares. A drum machine can first of all do ANYTHING normal drums can do, absolutely everything, including ghost tones and everything else. That is because you can sample. It can not only do ANYTHING normal drums can do it can also do it ten times better and ten times more dynamic with cutoff volumes and playback velocity etc. The list goes on, there are billions of alternatives. I play drums myself, when I want to make up a rhythm to go with the music I imagine it in my head at first and then play it, the only difference when I use a drum machine is that instead of playing it I draw it, I get the exact same beat, actually I even prefer writing drums with a drum machine because it's faster and I can plough through ideas more quickly. The only area where a drum machine is obsolete is within improvisation, but what-the-fuck would you call metal an improvisational genre? Genghis Tron uses drum machine because with the proper knowledge it just plain sounds better.

Anyways, time to get back on topic. The structure of this album is quite brilliant and you can immediately tell that it's meant as one long song rather than separate works. Some parts are more interlude-ish and some are more meant as choruses, and I don't mean choruses in their traditional sense, I mean it as something that stands out from the rest of the song which just happens to be kind of catchy. I don't even think any song has any choruses in their traditional meaning. The IDM influences are still here, thank God for that (I don't mean God as in God, rather simply as an expression), though not as obvious and frequent as in Dead Mountain Mouth. But at least they don't make the same kind of album over and over again which would just be embarrassing, though that being said this is still very similar to it's predecessor. The slight noise influence seems to have been even further toned down to the point of disappearing completely. Some parts of the album is ambient, but never completely, rather it is often kept in the background which gives the soundscape an obscure feeling with their more recurring and "convenient" synth with heavy and harsh on top. Something that I find myself enjoying is the more on this in comparison to the previous album is the more frequent journeys into clean-oriented singing which are just breathtakingly beautiful, or perhaps that is the wrong word as they can be quite upsetting at times as well, in contrast to the harsh screaming to heavy music it sends shivers down my spine. The melodies send shivers down my spine, especially those of the more interlude oriented songs. This album sends shivers down my spine.

Thank you for reading, if you did. For further reading check out (though the early ones are kinda suckeeeh (not the albums, just my writing about them)):

If I fooled you by coming here looking for something else, due to my excessive use of connections, I don't really care. :) But do leave me a comment will you!?

  • Tournament of Fools, Round One

    Jul 16 2008, 14h06 por alfvaen

This is borrowed directly from a recent series of journals by JoeIsListening, wherein one takes 64 songs selected at random from one's playlist and puts them in an elimination tournament which I gather is based somewhat on basketball playoffs or something. I don't know from basketball, so I won't comment on that. To quote from Joe, "These will be divided into 32 musical face offs. Losers go away and the winners advance until 'there can only be one.'" I eliminated any under-1-minute tracks from the list, but didn't bother with a ten-minute-plus track or a number of 8-9 minute ones.

I am also borrowing Joe's Difficulty-O-Meter, which "gauges the degree of difficulty in deciding which song advances. The scale runs from * (no contest, no thought required) to ***** (pass the razor blades)".

Now, I've got close to 30,000 tracks in my system, many of which I could not hum even a snatch of upon seeing the title, so this could be interesting, or not as much. Let's see.

    1. Lebanese Blonde (French mix) by Thievery Corporation
    vs.
    2. Relax (Come Fighting) by Frankie Goes to Hollywood
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: Frankie
Comments: Both of them good grooving tracks, but I think "Relax" got the edge because of my greater familiarity with it, and perhaps it's a bit less laid-back and a little more forceful.

    3. TocarBroken Birds by Jane Siberry
    vs.
    4. 7 8 9 by Barenaked Ladies
    Difficulty: *
    Winner: The Ladies
Comments: Little contest here--a pretty much acoustic track from a past-her-prime Siberry doing a misguided album of songs she wrote as a teenager, versus a catchy children's song from Canada's top popsters.

    5. Heat of the Moment by Willy DeVille
    vs.
    6. TocarDreamin' by Lou Reed
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Willy
Comments: Willy DeVille mostly wins by default, because the Lou Reed track, from his subdued "Magic & Loss", is just not very strong. We'll see how Willy does in the next round...

    7. TocarHell in a Handbasket by Drywall
    vs.
    8. Framed by Saga
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Drywall
Comments: This is far from my favourite track from Stan Ridgway's "Drywall" project, but it's still at least distinctive enough to edge out a less-familiar prog-rock track from Saga.

    9. TocarAfterglow by Genesis
    vs.
    10. The Message by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
    Difficulty: *
    Winner: Flash
Comments: A weak track from a weak Genesis album against one of the classic songs of rap music? Okay, I'm not rap's biggest fan, but Grandmaster Flash nailed this one.

    11. Slip Inside This House by The 13th Floor Elevators
    vs.
    12. Close But No Cigar by Weird Al Yankovic
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Al
Comments: A catchy, appealing tune from Weird Al's latest album, even if not one that stuck out on first listen, holds its own against Roky Erickson's eerie tune.

    13. We're Just Temporary Ma'am by White Whale
    vs.
    14. The Warrior by Scandal
    Difficulty: *****
    Winner: The Whale
Comments: Okay, "The Warrior" is a classic of 80's pop-rock, where White Whale are just some obscure upstart indie-rock band, but "We're Just Temporary Ma'am" is catchy and has a great title, which won out over nostalgia by a hair.

    15. Prayer Meeting by Chet Atkins
    vs.
    16. Ultraviolence by New Order
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: The Order
Comments: While "Ultraviolence" is one of those tracks that I couldn't hum you a bar of right now, it still outdoes a Chet Atkins instrumental cover version from "Solid Gold '68". Or, at least, this particular one.

    17. My Hippy Angel by Bob Geldof
    vs.
    18. TocarThe Luxury by The Tragically Hip
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Sir Bob
Comments: While the Tragically Hip have some great songs, I have trouble getting into a lot of their album tracks, while Geldof's song is a fun listen.

    19. TocarRocket by Primitive Radio Gods
    vs.
    20. TocarTake Me Away by Fefe Dobson
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: Fefe
Comments: Though Dobson's Avrilesque charms are overly obvious, they nonetheless outweigh those of that PRG guy.

    21. Stay Awake by Suzanne Vega
    vs.
    22. TocarStreets of Banaras by Ann Mortifee
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: Ann
Comments: This was an interesting pairing. I love Suzanne Vega's a cappella take on the Mary Poppins song, but somehow her quiet, deadpan song paled next to Ann Mortifee's intense, histrionic soprano workout.

    23. TocarFurry Old Lobster by Jonathan Coulton
    vs.
    24. The Last Word by Mary Chapin Carpenter
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: Mary
Comments: Mary Chapin Carpenter wins out over Jonathan Coulton for having more clever lyrics, but this is admittedly one of Coulton's weaker numbers.

    25. As Good as New by ABBA
    vs.
    26. TocarThe Nightfly by Donald Fagen
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: BAAB
Comments: The throbbing disco beat and harmonies have it over Fagen's soft jazz and wry weary-radio-DJ lyrics.

    27. TocarQuestions in a World of Blue by Julee Cruise
    vs.
    28. TocarThe Rhythm of the Heat by Peter Gabriel
    Difficulty: **
    Winner: Pete
Comments: Julee Cruise is just a little too wispy to take on the primal power of even the live version of one of Gabriel's best tracks.

    29. Tomber by Laurence Jalbert
    vs.
    30. TocarTapestry by Carole King
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Laurence
Comments: Laurence Jalbert, who on this song strikes me as a sort of Francophone Melissa Etheridge, edges out Carole King on this one.

    31. You Took My Heart by Chris Isaak
    vs.
    32. TocarJunior by John Mellencamp
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: Cougar
Comments: John Mellencamp's story was a little more compelling than Isaak's bouncy lament.

    33. Chance (single version) by Big Country
    vs.
    34. TocarMessages by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: BC
Comments: The OMD track just wasn't striking me, which left Big Country on top by default.

    35. Animation by Jon Anderson
    vs.
    36. TocarFoxglove by Bruce Cockburn
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: Bruce
Comments: The Jon Anderson track just went on and on, leaving the field open for Cockburn's little guitar instrumental.

    37. What If We Don't Get What We Want? by 13 Engines
    vs.
    38. TocarRooms on Fire by Stevie Nicks
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Lucky 13
Comments: An uncharacteristically low-key track from alt-rockers 13 Engines, which takes out past-her-prime Stevie.

    39. TocarMermaid Smiled by XTC
    vs.
    40. TocarPerfect World by Talking Heads
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: XTC
Comments: I'm not that familiar with the XTC track, actually, but it manages to beat out one of my less-than-favourite Heads tracks.

    41. TocarManto's Arrow and the Sphinx by Andreas Vollenweider
    vs.
    42. TocarEric's Theme by Vangelis
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Vangelis
Comments: Despite (or, perhaps, because of) what sounds like Lisa Gerrard wailing in the background, Andreas Vollenweider is unable to beat the majestic track of "Chariots of Fire".

    43. Kissing Gate by Sam Brown
    vs.
    44. TocarFading Lights by Genesis
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Ms. Brown
Comments: Not my favourite Sam Brown track, but it's better than the dull and overlong Genesis song, at least.

    45. TocarWhat a Day That Was by David Byrne
    vs.
    46. There Won't Be Trumpets by Stephen Sondheim
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Mr. Sondheim
Comments: Perhaps if the Byrne song had been the "Stop Making Sense" version, it might have beaten out this minor Sondheim song from the "Side By Side By Sondheim" revue.

    47. TocarThe Killing Moon by Echo & The Bunnymen
    vs.
    48. Pull Me Down by Skydiggers
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: Echo
Comments: For a song I was unfamiliar with, the Skydiggers track was unexpectedly strong, but not enough to beat out the classic E&TB song.

    49. TocarSo Serious by Electric Light Orchestra
    vs.
    50. TocarBus Stop by The Hollies
    Difficulty: **
    Winner: Holly
Comments: It'll take more than that silly ELO song to defeat one of the best pop songs of the 60's! I can see "Bus Stop" getting quite far in this competition, in fact...

    51. TocarDouble Take by Blondie
    vs.
    52. Islands of the Future by Gentlemen Without Weapons
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: Blondie
Comments: Oh, my. The Blondie song is pretty silly, and from their latter days, but what is it up against? While Gentlemen Without Weapons sounded more pop than new-age with their synthesizers filled with animal and natural sounds, this song contains a gagworthy voiceover from a young Fairuza Balk that eliminates it from this round.

    53. TocarGrimsby by Elton John
    vs.
    54. Nightswimming by R.E.M.
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: REM
Comments: The Elton John song is okay, but not great, and the REM song has been growing on me lately.

    55. Careful With That Axe, Eugene by Pink Floyd
    vs.
    56. TocarThe Horns of Rohan & The Battle of the Pelennor Fields by Bo Hansson
    Difficulty: **
    Winner: Floyd
Comments: Oh, please. There's no way that Hansson and his synthy Lord of The Rings soundtrack can compete with such an epic of prog. I mean, with screaming and everything!

    57. Look Down by Claude-Michel Schönberg
    vs.
    58. Saskatchewan Sea by The SplendourBog
    Difficulty: ****
    Winner: Les Miz
Comments: The SplendourBog song is an interesting ode to Canada's flattest province, but it can't decide whether to be serious or jokey, so the Les Misérables track, not one of my favourites but decent enough, narrowly pulls ahead of it.

    59. The Story of One Chord by Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper
    vs.
    60. Lovers Anonymous by 10cc
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Mojo
Comments: The Mojo & Skid track is silly stuff, and so is the 10cc I suppose, but the 10cc track has the disadvantage of being pretty dull musically, so it drops out.

    61. TocarI Wanted Your Heart by Magazine
    vs.
    62. Love Don't Need No Tyranny by Tanita Tikaram
    Difficulty: ***
    Winner: Tanita
Comments: Neither of these are songs I'm that familiar with, but the Magazine track was grating on me a bit on this listen, so Tanita takes it through greater tunefulness.

    63. Amelia by Joni Mitchell
    vs.
    64. TocarFuture Call by Jill Cunniff
    Difficulty: **
    Winner: Jill
Comments: While I like a number of Joni Mitchell songs, this isn't one of them. I mean, my favourite album of hers is "Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm", for heaven's sake. Jill Cunniff's isn't quite Luscious Jackson, but it's still a more fun listen.

Next week, or so, Round Two, where the 32 winners in this round duke it out with each other...

  • Mellotronen News July 2008

    Jul 5 2008, 19h22 por sjugge

For those who missed out on the latest announcements of the Mellotronen camp...

News / Nyheter 28th of June 2008 (A Swedish version will follow below)

The rolling MELLOTRONEN shop will visit the festival PARKFESTEN 2008 outside Nora (örebro) the 12th of July [event page]. Hope to meet many Mellotronen friends on this new festival which we hope will be a yearly tradition.

We have just released a new and fresh double CD edition of Kultivator - "Barndomens stigar". The CD will be available at our stand at PARKFESTEN as well as 1000 of other CDs, LPs and DVDs.

Talking about DVDs so is the editing of the mighty MELLOBOAT 2008 DVD done!!! The result is beyond all expectations!!! Hoping to release the double layer DVD in the end of August.

At the same time will our two releases of unreleased material with Sabu Martinez be available. Yes you have heard this before but now is it actually the truth!!! Believe it or not....

Here comes some important dates: 26th of September, 24th of October, 19th of November and 5th of December. These are the dates to remember if you are in the Stockholm area during the fall and wants to visit the MELLO-CLUB at Café Edenborg (Stora Nygatan 35, gamla stan) [venue page]. The coolest place in old town. We wil offer new arrivals of LPs, CDs, DVDs, fresh coffee, food, beer and music performed by interesting musicians. What can be better? See you all soon I hope / Stef.

  • Atmospheric Music, Chapter IV

    Mai 11 2008, 11h56 por Bergatroll

This is the fourth installment of a journal series where I rant on, recommend and explain why I like the albums. This is NOT a journal where I talk about my favorite albums, rather a journal where I talk about some amazingly atmospheric albums I've come across and highly recommend. To read the previous journal Click Here.
In difference to my previous journals who are mainly composed of albums I've found for myself, this journal will only be composed of albums that were recommended to me directly.

    13. Stendeck - "Faces"
    IDM / Ambient / Industrial

The down-side of ambient is that it can at times get boring to actively listen to since not much might be happening in the music. Stendeck however, at least for me, never gets boring. The ambience is always there providing you with a nice pleasant atmosphere to dream away in. But we also have the rhythms, the industrial rhythms providing, lets say entertainment? Preventing the else pure ambient music from getting boring. Just because it has a rhythm it doesn't mean it's not boring of course and I'm not saying all stuff without rhythm is boring either. The beats are intresting and fairly complex. A hint of noise / powernoise can be found in the beats which is something I personally highly appreciate. Another element which makes this album perfect to dream away to is that the songs are weaved together, you won't get that pause in between songs instead each new song will pick up where the last left off. You might be suspecting that all the tracks sounds just about the same now. No, each track is very distinct and unique. A nominee for album of the year 2007.
Thanks to InterSeKtion for recommending me this.

    14. 5ive - "Hesperus"

    Read below

Yes the boyband. They're friggin' GODLIKE MUSICIANS I TELL YOU. Especially Neville he has such a nice voice. LOL KK............. NOOOOOO! I'm talking about the Sludge / Stoner Rock / Progressive Doom Metal band which, for the record, had the name first and forced the boyband to change name to Five. 5ive reminds me of those instrumental post-rock bands what with complex song-arrangements and whatnots. Perhaps it's me misinterpreting what post-rock really is. But then post-rock doesn't really have a definition anyway. Post-metal could be a more correct label for them, but I'm not ready to dissolve my boycott of the use of that Donald Duck-label just yet.

The first time I listened to this album I thought, wow this is so smooth I really hope they don't add vocals to ruin that, which they didn't :O For that I am oh so thankful. I don't think this music would work as well as it does if it had vocals. Harsh/Screamed/Growl vocals would ruin the smoothness in no-time. Ok let's just go with clean vocals then? Well... No that would instead ruin that particular "dirty sound" which we so often find in Sludge. The sometimes (note: !!!!SOMETIMES!!!!) a bit noisy guitars remind me of Boris's psychedelic noisy guitars which can be found on some songs on "Smile". While the clean guitars are nice, they're not what makes this album so atmospheric, it's the darker distorted guitars. At first I thought it was the bass doing the job, but after reading about them a little I found out that THERE IS NO BASS :O (lol I imagine Myaxe frowning as he read that) I was liek "wut, I want that überdark sound on my guitar". The dark distorted guitar stands for the dark soundscape which can be heard throughout the whole album. The drums pleasant to listen to, sometimes they are a bit complex, which might upset people who want to be able to grasp the rhythm instantly, but it's nothing too complex really. The guitars and drums remind me of Kyuss, especially the "Blues For the Red Sun" album. They have somewhat similar composition and sound. I find 5ive to be darker and more sludgy though.
Thanks to Lord_Krichian for recommending me this.

    15. dälek - "Absence"

    Hip-Hop / Noise

Expected metalhead reaction upon reading the genres: "LOLWUT? Hip-hop? Hip-hop sucks man, don't listen to such crap, it's not even music."

Expected hip-hopper reaction upon listening: "LOLWUT? Hip-hop? This crap isn't hip-hop, it's not even music, it's just noise."

Your expected reaction upon reading the previous: "Oh, isn't that stereotypical of an elitist to make fun of stereotypes?"

A very fair mixture of noise and hip-hop with some industrial-ish beats on that. It's still hip-hop and it's still noise. A regular close-minded hip-hopper wouldn't like this. Personally I like Dälek mostly because of the music, or the noise, whatever you want to call it. I'm not a huge fan of rap or hip-hop and the only hip-hop I regularily listen to besides this is Sage Francis who is alternative hip-hop too I guess. The rap delivery technique is kind of dirty which goes well with the dark atmosphere of the music, the down-side of this is that it's frequently hard to tell what he is saying. After reading the lyrcs I can confirm that they are good as well. A personal favorite lyric off this album would have to be distorted prose (read it yourself) which is also a damn good song. Hip-hop is a genre that is very rarely atmospheric, but Dälek is one of these rare hip-hop acts that actually are. If you haven't heard Dälek and is skeptic towards hip-hop you might want to check this out as it really is something else. If you dislike both hip-hop and noise maybe you just shouldn't bother though.
Thanks to KursiveradStil for recommending me this.

    16. The Bear Quartet - "Eternity Now"

    Indie Rock / Alternative

Gone indiefag? Why yes I have. I really do despise the label indie. I don't quite hate it as much as I hate the post-metal tag, though both are equally pointless and hold about as much information as a deleted wikipedia article (Devil Doll article R.I.P. ;_; ("an underground not notable band" my ass!) the wikipedia-mods are incredibly stupid, they didn't even delete the articles on Devil Doll's discography, haha fucking dipshits). Where was I? Oh right, despite my despise I still tagged this as indie rock? Well hate me but I dunno how else to describe it. Alternative?

At least this album isn't as faggotry as their previous albums (well, lyrically it is, but not musically (noise-influence lulz? yum yum)). I don't really listen to their earlier stuff (this is their most recent album). I do listen to "Ny Våg" (it's predecessor) from time to time but not anything earlier than that really. This album features quite a bit of pitch-altered vocals, which is intresting but might be a turn-off for some. The guitars are enjoyable too who also are very altered. What I foremostly enjoy about this album though are the drums (which also are altered) and the synths. The synths vary from noise to pleasant melodies too annoying sounds (annoyance is a good thing despite popular belief after all, you should go ahead and thank all the trolls that have annoyed you on this site right away) to ambientishness. Though this album isn't as atmospheric as the previous ones I wrote about in this journal I still thought it deserved a spot because some of the songs are really atmospheric. I guess I didn't really write much about the album itself but if you want to know more why don't you try to listen to it yourself? (also fu)
