The band started in 1994 as a solo project, with Vindsval playing all instruments under the name Vlad. He released two demos under this title before changing the projects name to Blut Aus Nord before the release of Ultima Thulée in 1995. The next three albums were recorded with the aid of session musicians: It is only fairly recently that the group has had any permanent members apart from Vindsval.
The project’s most critically acclaimed release is The Work Which Transforms God, a concept album which - in spite of being mostly instrumental with none of the lyrics made public - is meant to challenge the listener’s prejudices and preconceptions about reality, life and various metaphysical subjects. The Work Which Transforms God has been almost unanimously praised in reviews and was named by Terrorizer Magazine as it’s number one album of 2003. However, some people find that album a pointless exercise in weirdness for weirdness’ sake. Another point of interest is that Vindsval has only allowed the lyrics from one of Blut Aus Nord’s four full-length releases, Memoria Vetusta, to be published and thus made public.

I have had Memoria Vetusta I for a long time but never really bothered to give it a good listen. It is only now that I have realized its beautiful melodies and atmosphere. A real gem for its time. Also, MoRT is basically a Dark Ambient album for me.

MoRT isn't gonna be for everyone. It's pretty much at the opposite end of the spectrum from the Memoria Vetustas, so naturally some people are gonna be polarized one way or the other.

TFC: Yes, MoRT is experimental but are the experiments overdone? Hell no. Whole album sticks to a one concept and played in a manner which doesn't have to suit everyone. But it would be pretty different if BAN would like to put every possible experimentation in it. I would say that Karras - xenoglossy is as you would say "experimental for being experimental". And sorry but I really don't like every Vindsval's release :)

TFC makes a more convincing argument, to be honest. Especially better than a "hur hur ur gay" blathering -- just more ill-conceived self-righteousness from that one. Anyhow, I don't agree that Odinist was very experimental at all, let alone being 'experimental just for the sake of it'. It was, however, while a /good/ album, not exactly his most inspired work, so at least as far as Odinist goes I think TFC's claim that Vindsval may have been in a bit of a slump at the time is not totally inaccurate. The decision to do Memoria Vetusta II after that probably reflects this. I do like MoRT quite a bit though, and don't really see it as the result of a lack of ideas at all. It's just taking one strain of BaN's sound to its logical conclusion.
