  • 2009 - Records...

    Jul 1 2009, 8h42 por TheBlackPope

Half of the year passed by, some cool records got released, these are my favorites (a lot of „usual suspects“) until now:

    1. James Blackshaw - The Glass Bead Game

Will there be a better record this year? I doubt it,... (I just LOVE everything James Blackshaw does!)

    2. Ilyas Ahmed - Goner

How to play the blues in 2009, excellent record.

    3. Group Bombino - Guitars from Agadez, Vol. 2

Amazing, groovy record to play all day long!

    4. Six Organs of Admittance - Luminous Night

Ben Chasny gets better and better...

    5. Flower/Corsano Duo - The Four Aims

    Free Improvisation at it's best!

    6. Kluster - 1969-1972

Incredible collection of previously unreleased recordings! (I was stupid enough to buy this expensive LP-Box...)

    7. Courtis/Moore - Brokebox Juke

    Amazing one,...

    8. Jozef Van Wissem - It Is All That Is Made

Another crypto-religious masterpiece - pure bliss!

    9. Sir Richard Bishop - Freak Of Araby

    Makes me smile,...

    10. Gareth Davis & Steven R. Smith - Westering

    Beautiful dark & moody record.

    11. Sun Araw - Heavy Deeds

... perfect for having some cold beer in the sun.

    12. No-Neck Blues Band - At 6 A.M. We Become The Police

... maybe some of the best recordings they've released ever!

    13. Neokarma Jooklo Trio - Time's Vibes

... some say, the record's to well produced - that's why I like it.

    14. Blues Control - Local Flavour

... yep, no doubt this will be included in the end of year list!

    15. Master Musicians of Bukkake - Totem One

Since the Sun City girls are no more there is at least those guys...

    16. Sunburned Hand of the Man - A Grand Tour Of Tunesia

Thanks to Ronnie to remind me about this one!

    17. Chris Corsano - Another Dull Dawn

I just got this a few days ago,... seems like it could be a Top 10 record at the end of the year...

    18. The xx - The XX

It's hyped, but it's good, very good. Sparse but elegant with beautiful boy/girl-vocals. Top-record.

    19. MV & EE With The Golden Road - Barn Nova

    Another instant masterpiece!

    20. Evangelista - Prince Of Truth

Great, great record, but it's even better to see Carla Bozulich perform!

    21. Die Goldenen Zitronen - Die Entstehung der Nacht

Jochen Distelmeyer go home, listen to this and LEARN!

    22. Steven R. Smith - Cities

... another Steven R. Smith record, another winner

... maybe some more records will be added to this list, time will tell.

The Psychic Paramount - II [no quarter]

Sunn O))) - monoliths & dimensions [southern lord]
okładka nowego albumu dość zwyczajna jak na sunniczne standardy (jakiś ciemny okrągły kształt, enigma cieknie z ekranu i tworzy tłuste sople, ogólnie przypomina duuużo mroczniejszą odmianę okładki 'zeit' Tangerine Dream). lista kolaborantów i okupantów jest ciekawa - jakieś chóry, instrumenty klasyczniawe. jeszcze się sunnitom zachciewa w nieokreślonej przyszłości współpracować z chórem gospel. jeszcze kurwa klawesyn i frytki do tego [siermiężny żarcik]. a tak srsly, to jest fajnie. ciekaw jestem co ten chór wyczyni. i znowu attila, goddamnit!

Oneohtrix Point Never - zones without people [arbor]

Sun Araw - heavy deeds [not not fun]

Wooden Shjips - contact [mexican summer]

Do sierpnia!

    UPDATE:

Alasehir - torment of the metals [important]
ojaaaaaaaaa! wheeeeee! heeeeeewack! nowy alasehir wychodzi, pastrze śpiewają, bydlęta klękają. więcej psychobrudu i przeciężkich riffów bez kobiecej ręki. fak jea.

Shit and Shine - 229 2299: girls against shit [riot season]

    Aluk Todolo - finsternis [utech]

Blues Control - local flavor [siltbreeze]

Eternal Tapestry też wydaje coś nowego. na three lobed wydaje. fajno bydzie.
edit: nawet dwa albumy wieczna tapetka wydaje. jeden będize na three lobed, będize nazywał się palace of the night skies, drugi wydaje not not fun, a nazwa będzie brzmiała the invisible landscape.
    i Mammatus może też.
Wildildlife by się nowy przydał też, oj srogo by się przydał.
Shrinebuilder też wyjdzie w tym roku. OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHhH

  • Unrock Series: Datashock

    Out 2 2008, 21h18 por TheBlackPope

    Datashock, Heatsick & Cones

    http://www.lastfm.de/event/750776

    05.10.2008 Kulturrampe, Krefeld
    20.00 Uhr VVK/AK € 7.-/€ 10.-

    Aktuelle Releases:
Datashock & Shivers – Vol. 4 LP (Textile, France)
Datashock – s/t LP (Qbico) sold out

  • Feed Your Head! #03

    FeedYourHead! #03

Your Brain is hungry, time to feed him (HER!) with some new music.

    Shit and Shine

Your parents are afraid of this band. Hell, YOU are afraid of this band. Two bassists, five to twelve drummers and sometimes extremely simple electronics devices or children's keyboards. Add a wall of amplifiers and imagine that bunch of freaks play the very same rhythm and riff for 2-3 hours without almost no changes at all. It is not a band, it's a state of mind. They are deadly serious and not serious at all at the same time. They tend to get drunk before live performances and end playing whenever they the hell they want. They will crack your skull open and shit their psychedelic-noise-indusrial-stoner-doom-headfuck plasma in. And you will be grateful for that.

    Valet

I discovered this artist maybe a month ago. And I was hooked. Deep drones, folky passages and the haunting voice of Honey Owens (of Jackie-O Motherfucker) put in some damn good mood. There is also some good ol' electric guitar with effect-layered solos. Nice for a late night listening. Or an early morning listening.

    Black Dice

Noise can be pleasant and enjoyable too. Clicky sound experiments, ambiental soundscapes, changing pitch, weird samples. Don't want to pigeonhole here, but I would place them somewhere between Boredoms and Negativland.
    Highlight album: Beaches and Canyons.

    Ścianka

One of the very few psychedelic bands on the Polish scene. And probably the most experimental. Their music is almost incredible to categorize, but I think "psychedelic" is a very good description. Because it is definitely heady. Distant guitars, echoed vocals, weird lyrics, noise, ambiental drones and general weirdness. Dni Wiatru is a good place to start - a good showcase of their style and compositional abilities.

    Haare

Mother of all gods! Such an incredibly obscure band. Not even 1000 plays on last.fm. It is definitely not popular, but it's not easy listening either. Julian Cope totally worships Haare, he even made The Temple Album of the Month. When I got it I understood why. My brain literally melted and I could imagine tectonic plates moving and the glaciers shaping the landscapes. Listen at night, with a good subwoofer. Preferably stoned.

    Aan

We're still in Finland, and we're still in the areas of drone. But Aan is much more civilized and calm than Haare. While Haare could be, let me quote Mr. Cope here, the soundtrack set to the process of creation, Aan could be the soundtrack to a trip to pagan forests of Finland. Haunting, wordless vocals and echoed ambience create a unique atmosphere. This time listen to it during a summer day, while sitting in a garden.

    My Cat Is an Alien

Drone, drone, DRONE!!! These Italian brothers go deeper and more cosmic than most creating mystical spacey soundscapes. And when you think it can't get more transcendental than that, they throw in bells and chimes to hypnotize you even more. Music in the vein of Finnish Haare, but with less noise.

    Blues Control

This New York City based dynamic duo managed to create a sound of their own from their very first album. Take a totally stoner-like, psychedelic fuzzy guitar in the vein of Electric Wizard or Dead Meadow and slap some liquid Popol Vuh-like electronics in the background. Then add shitloads of reverb and make it sound as if the sound was coming from a sunken submarine. That's Blues Control.

    Les Rallizes Denudes

In the last issue of Feed Your Head! I mentioned three Japanese psych-noise bands. But this band is above them and they're above most of the bands ever to come out of Japan. These guys started it all. Extremely noisy concerts, almost no studio recordings, use of stroboscopes and trippy visuals and left-oriented political views. They're very little known even in Japan, but they developed a cult following and a devoted fanbase. LRD existed from 1967 to 2005. Fun fact: the first bassist of a band actually was a terrorist who took part in hijacking a passenger plane in 1970.

    Yatha Sidhra

Far-out, man! A krautrock band heavily inspired by Indian and eastern music. They made a flute their main instrument, adding to relaxing nature of their music. Traditional drums and delicate guitar passages add to the feeling of sitting in a beautiful garden somewhere beyond the time... Meditation Mass is an obvious choice.

  • Choons of 2007

    Fev 1 2008, 10h19 por ChoonyFish

    Albums of the Year

    1) Burial - Untrue
Echoey dance vocal snippets, minimal dubstep beats, pops, clicks and crackles - best served on headphones. Gorgeous, late-night inner-city vibe.

    2) Bachi da pietra - Non Io
Italian alt blues guitar, voice and percussion - like a mellowed-out Caspar Brötzmann. Sort of.

    3) José González - In Our Nature
If someone had told me 2 years ago I'd soon get into this acoustic folky shit I'd have laughed. Cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop" is even better than the original...

    4) Dave Gahan - Hourglass
Stong electronic pop from frontman of Depeche Mode. "Saw Something" is more lovely than anything I ever expected from Dave sans Martin Gore.

    5) Interpol - Our Love to Admire
Oh how Interpol divide opinion. "Joy Division rip-off!" Yes Paul Banks sounds like Ian Curtis, but that's where it ends. Joy Division were stark and raw - Interpol are fleshed out and sumptuous and that.

    The rest...
    Andy Stott - Merciless
Angels Of Light - We Are Him
    Blotnik Brothers - Mizuage
    Blues Control - Blues Control
Einstürzende Neubauten - Alles Wieder Offen
    Grinderman - Grinderman
    Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Porn Sword Tobacco - New Exclusive Olympic Heights
    Recoil - subHuman
    Siouxsie Sioux - Mantaray
Throbbing Gristle - Part Two: The Endless Not
    Von Südenfed - Tromatic Reflexxions

    How could I forget?
Editors new album. Not played it yet. Silly me.

    -----------------------------------------------------

    Tracks of the Year

    Battles - "Atlas" from Mirrored
Someone suggested this sounds like Ewoks doing post rock and they were bob-on. Vocals pitch-shifted back and forth alongside rigid guitar/drums/electronics/loops. Was a highlight on Later with Jools Holland, but I lost interest with the rest of the album, as utterly fashionable as it is.

The Gossip - "Standing in the Way of Control"
Banging dance pop, belting vocals and bouncy, dirty bass.

    Serebro - "Song No.1"
Russia's Eurovision entry. Yes, that's right. It had all the hallmarks of a UK number 1 pop hit , however with sheep mentality absent from phone voting, the UK votes were all over the place and we gave 12 points to some other rubbish. Great bouncing girlie pop with balls.

Gym Class Heroes - "Cupid's Chokehold"
It's that rap tune with the Supertramp sample. Love it or hate it catchy pop.

Ghosts - "The World Is Outside"
Bland verses actually, but the indie-pop chorus stuck in my head for days.

    -----------------------------------------------------

    Honorary Albums of the Year
    Stuff I discovered in 2007.

    Ulver - Perdition City (2001)
Slick sax-infused trip-hop electronica. A mostly instrumental soundtrack for a late night. Ulver were once a (frankly unlistenable) black metal outfit so delve into the back catalogue at your peril.

Cult of Luna - Salvation (2002) + Somewhere along the Highway (2006)
Swedish doom metal. Gentle acoustic guitars build up crescendo-like into a crushing sonic powerdrive.

    Allerseelen - Abentuerliches Herz (2002)
This album moves from Neubauten-esque industrial to acoustic loveliness to dance beats and ends with a metal guitar whine followed by a Wagnerian string motif. And still manages to gel really well as a whole.

Henrik Nordvargr Bjorkk - Vitagen (2005)
Dark doomscapes conjouring imagery of dark towers, windy tunnels and downright creepiness.

    Reuber - Südpol
Rolling electronic soundscapes, this was perfect on a sunny and breezy day on the beach.

    The rest...
    AZ - The Format (2006)
    Burial - Burial (2006)
    Isis - Oceanic (2002) + Panopticon (2004)
Old Man Gloom - Christmas (2004)
    Melvins - A Senile Animal (2006) + Stag (1996)
    Monolake - Polygon Cities (2005)
    Sahg - I (2006)
    Sunn O))) & Boris - Altar (2006)

    ----------------------------------------------------

    Honorary Tracks of the Year

Anywhen - "The Siren Song" + "Postcard" from The Opiates (2001)
"The Siren Song" is possibly the saddest song ever to have been played into these ears. The whole album isn't bad but the other tracks are far outshined by these two.

    Sunn O)))
    - "My Wall" from White 1 (2003)
    - "It Took the Night to Believe" from Black One (2005)
"My Wall" is percussionless crushing monolithic doom that's 25 minutes long. Julian Cope provides OTT spoken word nonsense, but when he eventually shuts his mouth (pun intended) that's when it really opens up into the sound of planets forming. "It Took the Night to Believe" is some scary shit with black metal vocals just this side of laughable.

Clutch - "Burning Beard" from Robot Hive / Exodus (2005)
Full on metal with a strange time signature. Yet to give the album a proper listen. Rock!

Blotnik Brothers - "Electro Manifesto (Beats on Demand)" from Museful Revolution EP (2004)
Remember 1984? Spinning on your back on the kitchen lino? This cool modern electro would be great for twirling away on the laminate flooring of 2007.

Afrika Bambaataa - "Ain't Talkin' No Shhh" from Dark Matter Moving at the Speed of Light (2004)
    Enormously catchy electro funk.
