  • 50 Questions about my Top 50: 2009 Version

    Nov 2 2009, 23h13 por melbo

Because it's been almost two years since I filled this out...I thought it would be fun to see how this has changed.

    1. How did you get into 29? (Martina Sorbara)
My friend Christina loved her first. She has excellent taste in music, so I looked her up.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Clay Aiken)
Haha...umm...I guess something he sang on American Idol? I don't remember whether I watched the auditions that season or picked up the show later.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? (Chris Isaak)
No idea. I don't really pay attention to his lyrics...more his music and his voice.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49? (Spice Girls)
Haha, I guess I prefer Spice World?

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Mariah Carey)
    Five.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50? (Billy Joel)
First, how is Billy only #50?! That's disturbing. I love so many of his songs (so many!!), but if I have to pick just one, I always go with TocarThe Longest Time. I was so disappointed that he didn't sing it at Wrigley Field last summer.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? (Sarah McLachlan)
Mm, yes. TocarWintersong. It's such a beautiful type of sad, though.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15? (Andrea Bocelli)
Vivo Per Lei (con Giorgia), unless it's Olympic time. Then it's Because We Believe.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (Vienna Teng)
    TocarHarbor, TocarWhatever You Want, TocarAntebellum.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (The Beatles)
There are probably a hundred. I mean, really, does their discography ever end? All You Need Is Love would be the most obvious.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40? (Shania Twain)
Come On Over. Seriously, weren't the majority of the songs on that album released to great success?

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (Jack Johnson)
    TocarBetter Together!

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (Laura Pausini)
I discovered her through a fantastic lady that I used to work for. She passed away a few years ago, but listening to Laura always makes me think of her.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38? (Michael Jackson)
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough. I think.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (Backstreet Boys)
BSB makes me so nostalgic. Specifically, I guess I'll go with TocarAs Long As You Love Me

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live? (Madonna)
None. I'm sure that would be a great show, though!

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (Destiny's Child)
I don't know what the first song I heard would have been, but the first one that I liked was probably TocarBills, Bills, Bills.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11? (John Mayer)
    Continuum! Easily.

    19. What is your favorite song by 1? (Emm Gryner)
So far, this is the only ranking that hasn't changed since the last time I did this survey, and the answer hasn't changed either. My favourite Emm song is still Blackwinged Bird

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? (Rascal Flatts)
No! I would love to, but I don't have any local friends who like them.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? (Rachael Yamagata)
Her songs make me think of many fabulous road trips with Jules.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? (Sara Bareilles)
    TocarGravity. So. Incredible.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? (Astor Piazzolla)
I have no idea. Since I'm a skating fan, TocarLibertango is a safe bet!

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? (Diana Krall)
The Girl In The Other Room

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? (Regina Spektor)
    TocarHotel Song or TocarSamson

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (Alicia Keys)
    I'm sure it was TocarFallin'

    27. What is your favorite album by 3? (Chantal Kreviazuk)
Here's another one that hasn't changed! But the answer might...the verdict is still out. What If It All Means Something has been my favourite, but her new one, Plain Jane is gaining ground. We'll see.

    28. What is you favorite song by 2? (Céline Dion)
Céline is still #2. And TocarS'il Suffisait D'Aimer is still my favourite. Although there are SO MANY.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? (Sarah Slean)
TocarMy Invitation, and I didn't really like it, so I didn't listen to her for a long time. I'm still not crazy about that song, but I do love her.

    30. What is you favorite song by 8? (Kelly Clarkson)
I can't believe she's ranked so high, first of all. I don't feel like I listen to her that often. Maybe because it takes me so many listens to decide whether or not I like her songs, haha. I guess my favourite is TocarSince U Been Gone. Does that make me shallow?

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Keith Urban)
    I haven't.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (Chicago)
    TocarJust You 'N' Me

    33. What is you favorite album by 12? (Superchick)
    Beauty from Pain

    34. What is the worst song by 45? (Coldplay)
I don't think there's any that make me groan.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Daniel Bedingfield)
    TocarJames Dean (I Wanna Know)

    36. What is your favorite album by 48? (Blue Rodeo)
I definitely haven't heard all their albums, but I have The Days in Between and I like it.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (U2)
I haven't ever, although I'm sure it's a great show. I'm not sure I would shell out the cash for it, though.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36? (Bryan Adams)
    Seriously? Obviously TocarSummer Of '69

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? (Jamie Cullum)
I'm going to go with These Are The Days, because that's the first track on Twentysomething. I was with a friend when she bought it and we listened to it on the way home from Windsor.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7? (Michael Bublé)
    It's Time

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? (98 Degrees)
    I still love TocarStill.

  • Your life in song (yes, a shuffle game)

    Set 16 2009, 16h02 por Carpetbagger513

    1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
    2. Put it on shuffle
    3. Press play
    4. For the first question, type the song that's playing
    5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
    6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool...just type it in, man!

IF YOUR LIFE WERE A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE???

    1. Opening Credits:
"TocarCan't Help Wondering Why" - Blue Rodeo

    2. Waking Up:
"The Dream" - The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (how appropriate)

    3. First Day at School:
"Green Grow the Lilacs" - Chad Mitchell Trio

    4. Falling in Love:
"Oh No Oh My" - Walk In The Park (Been there, done that)

    5. Wedding Night:
"Ghost Town" - Hal Ketchum (iTunes isn't feeling very optimistic about love today)

    6. Fight Song:
"The Rat" - Dead Confederate (Hey, I've been called worse)

    7. Breaking Up:
"It's Enough To Leave You..." - Monahans (It was more than enough, actually)

    8. Prom:
"Ellis County" - Buddy & Julie Miller

    9. Life:
"TocarFloyd" - The Lennings (Floyd, my father in law, knows the secret of life? Or Floyd the Barber from The Andy Griffith Show? Those are the only two Flods I know)

    10. Mental Breakdown:
"The Knot Unties?" - David Karsten Daniels (the knot of sanity, apparently)

    11. Driving:
"TocarWichita Way" - John Cowan (I've driven to Wichita before. Hundreds of miles of corn fields doesn't exactly make for exciting scenery)

    12. Flashback:
    "TocarSantiago's Shottis" - David Schnaufer

    13. Getting Back Together:
"TocarLaydown" - Chikita Violenta (awwwww yeah.....)

    14. Wedding:
"Traded for Fire" - Dolorean (again with the pessimism...)

    15. Birth of a Child:
    "Maybe" - Jim Lauderdale

    16. Final Battle:
"Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart" - Whiskeytown

    17. Death Scene:
"Surfing Lake of the Ozarks (Recuerdos de Camp Sambra)" - Mark Rubin & His Jews of the Golden West (I'm going to drown while surfing in the Ozarks? That settles it, I'm never going to Branson)

    18. Funeral Song:
"Jolie Blonde" - Evangeline (kinda upbeat for a funeral, but I'll go with it. My Cajun in-laws will appreciate it)

    19. End Credits:

I thought I would be a bit of a dick and make this here list. Not as impressive as some, but longer than many. For personal record, mostly.

The * indicates I have also interviewed the performer in one way or another. (Zines incl.)
The # indicates they have stayed on my sofa/spare bed.
The ‡ indicates they have played at a show that I organised, or on my radio show.

  • Blue Rodeo in Kapuskasing on July 25th

    Jul 26 2009, 15h57 por WLDB

Last night I saw Blue Rodeo for the fourth time. As usual they put on a very good show. I went with Chris, the same fellow I went to the Neil Young concert with.
We left to go to Kapuskasing at about 3:45 PM. I thought that would be cutting it close as the doors open at 7, turns out we weren’t cutting it close at all. We arrived at around 5:30 and the first thing we decided to do was get food. We went to a local restaurant and they were packed so we went another block to Caseys. As we were approaching the building Jim Cuddy came out of it. We were both surprised. What surprised us more was that he couldn’t get in, apparently that place was packed too with wait times of up to an hour for a table. So we ended up having to settle for a chip stand, not sure what Jim ended up doing.
We then got in line at the arena sometime around 6:40 and they let us in at 7:15. The arena got very hot very fast. At the back of the arena there was an open door and that was it for ventilations. All three bands would comment about the heat several times each. The whole concert was general admission which was perfect, we ended up as close to the stage as one can be. Though as time went by and multiple trips to the bathroom or the bar took place it seemed harder and harder to get that close again. By the end of the night we were about fifteen feet from the gate, which is still not bad at all.
The first band to come on were The Shaftmen, a blues/rock band. They were a pretty decent outfit but they looked pretty old. They played for about three quarters of an hour. The next band came out very quickly. Chris and I went onto the other rink during this time for beer and water. The other rink had tables lined up and a screen showing the entertainment going on on stage. Chris went upstairs to get water and I went to the bar for the beer, I ordered four. I quickly realized this was not a good idea when I realized that I would have to carry these cups several hundred meters in a crowded place. With no one to help me I had no choice but to down one of them. Three I can handle, not four.
I had already had several before that quick one. I was back in front of the stage with Chris when it suddenly hit me, the alcohol that is. Well what could I do but keep on drinking and enjoying this second band. I still don’t know who it was but the singer was from Kapuskasing and they described it as a homecoming.
Blue Rodeo came on sometime around 10 and played til 12:15. Here’s the set list (probably not in the right order)

    What Am I Doing Here
    Rain Down on Me
    Blue House
    5 Days in May
    Fools Like You
    C’mon
    Bulletproof
    Rose Coloured Glasses
    Trust Yourself
    Bad Timing
    Photograph
    Heart Like Mine
    This Town
    Head Over Heels
    Diamond Mine
    Lost Together
    Encore:
    TocarHasn't Hit Me Yet
    Try
    TocarTil I Am Myself Again

So as you can see the set list is more or less the same as all the shows for the last month. I would have liked to have had a few more Greg songs, but Im happy with what we got. It was my first time seeing “Bulletproof” and “Fools Like You” which was great. They seemed to be having sound problems through the first half of the show which was barely noticeable to the audience but you could tell the band was not too happy about it. Probably something with the monitors. During the last couple songs the audience forced the gate in front of the stage down and the security guys disappeared. I had never seen anything like this at a concert but I was still enjoying it. Then people started taking their shirts off, cant say I blame them it was like a sauna in there. Most of the band was drenched in sweat. Jim gave away a few guitar picks to some people up front. Mostly young women (it was a 19+ event). I filmed several of the songs and got some nice pictures of it all. Chris seemed impressed that I was able to accurately guess every song, I explained to him later that I saw the set lists here so it wasn’t that hard. Overall I’d say this was the best BR show I’ve been to so far. Looking forward to the next one!

  • Recollecting live experiences

    Mai 22 2009, 17h10 por U-L-T-R-A

This list is by no means complete. I will omit several opening acts, early festival acts and maybe even some major acts. But despite my fading memory and with help of Google and Wikipedia, I will try my best to make this list as complete as possible. I've slowed down over the years, but these days I prefer quality over quantity.
