Now just a little more than halfway through the year, I decided it was time for a sequel to my earlier post, 2009: A Good Start. There've been a handful of releases well worth the attention of any self-respecting music fan; in this post I'll share my particular favourites.


Let's start with one for the indie kids: Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse - Dark Night of the Soul. This is my first Sparklehorse album, so I can't comment on any musical development on his part, but this is certainly is a step in the right direction for Danger Mouse. This collaboration takes him almost entirely away from his hip-hop background and juxtaposes his unique production style against a stark, bluesy folk-rock sound. Each track features a different guest vocalist, including the likes of Iggy Pop and David Lynch (whom is also responsible for the art book included with the limited run of the album). On the whole, nothing about this album sounds too out of the ordinary though, does it? On the contrary- it seems there were some "difficulties" with the label EMI in releasing this album, and so the duo have released, in a rather John Cage-esque fashion, a blank disc. The entire album is streamable from the NPR website (and any file sharing network you care to name).


It seems to me like 2009 might just be the year of art-dubstep (oh no, here comes the journalistic wank). Many producers are sidestepping the all-too-aggressive (silly? clichéd?) wobble-fest, and going for an articulate and emotive vibe. Martyn's Great Lengths is a fantastic example of this; glitch-flavoured garage rhythms, contorted vocal samples and gritty synths. There are only two guest appearances on this album; D-Bridge on These Words and the legendary Spaceape on Is This Insanity?. After having moderate success in the drum & bass scene, I think it's now evident where Martyn's strengths truly lie.


Joker / 2000F & J Kamata - Digidesign / You Don't Know What Love Is: This is by far my favourite single of the year. Its quirky, retro-future beats ooze with style and sophistication, while remaining danceable and fun. Digidesign's midrange melodies and odd palette (is that a Sonic the Hedgehog sample I hear?) make for a catchy tune, while You Don't Know shakes things up on the flipside with some melancholic vocoder and g-funk textures. As Hyperdub's signature sound (can something so dynamic be a 'signature'?) is further cementing itself as one of the most important in the dubstep scene, many more copycats are appearing out of the woodwork, but none are even close to matching Joker and his purple pals.


Much like Joker, Zomby and Flying Lotus, Samiyam lies in some strange, ill-defined territory. Some call it wonky, some just call it hip-hop or dubstep. Rap Beats Vol 1 seems defiant of all these titles, with 8-bit synths and gritty soundtrack samples all-pervasive. Whatever you want to call it, this collection of short tunes (each of the 24 tracks is only about 1:30 in length) is nothing short of charming. It's evocative of mid-20th century cinema and jazz, much in the style of early 90's trip-hop, which in my books, is a very good thing. This atmospheric quality lends the album well to being played either as 'listening' or 'background' music.


Blu Mar Ten's new album isn't quite out yet, but the second single of 2009, Believe Me / Made Of Air, is stunning. You may have noticed that I already tumbled the artwork for this one; I love the whole thing- both the direction they've taken with the artwork (by ithinkitsnice, whom is also responsible for the artwork of BOP's debut album 'Clear your mind') and the step back into drum & bass territory. For a number of years, many people were mourning the death of drum & bass, but I think tracks such as Believe Me show that drum & bass is very much alive. With string flourishes, mellow piano chords and beautiful vocal samples, these tunes are accessible enough for a new listener, but with warped bass, acute drum programming and amazing sound design, are also deep enough for the drum & bass purist. The digital version of the single includes a third bonus track, entitled Overwhelm. I hope this one appears on the vinyl editon of the album, because it's as good as the title tracks.
