  • [140] Blood, Sweat & Tears - Blood, Sweat & Tears (1969)

    Jun 12 2009, 21h06 por Llorenza

Blood, Sweat & Tears - Blood, Sweat & Tears

Can a group who starts and ends his album with a variation on Erik Satie really do something wrong? No of course not, and so they already win my heart from the first song on. :)

Not that Blood, Sweat & Tears make it that easy. They were one of the first groups to combine rock and jazz. I can say one thing: sometimes it's absolutely rock(/pop), something it's absolutely jazz. Mission succeeded. My problems lie of course in the jazz part... but thanks to the rock/pop part I liked those parts too. Maybe music like this is ideal for jazz newbies like me!

Highlights? TocarSmiling Phases, that has a great horn and a neat jazz piano part at the end. Also a great horn in TocarMore and More which is almost dance music and at moments definitely soul music (you can imagine James Brown singing this). TocarAnd When I Die is a cover from Laura Nyro: a funny childish melody and still with the Laura Nyro stamp of tempo changes on it: really amusing! The mambo part at the end of TocarGod Bless the Child is very contagious and reminds of Tito Puente. Top of the bill is of course hit single "TocarSpinning Wheel". Oh, and by the way, I really like the singer's voice (David Clayton-Thomas). TocarBlues - Part II (Where's part I?) is too long for my taste (and too jazzy), although the Sunshine Of Your Love melody in the middle is a nice surprise and the end really makes me think of Janis Joplin :). Lots of references alright!

To conclude: this music is quite special and original. It's not completely my cup of tea, but it's always a pleasure to hear something "different". I wonder what opinion jazz lovers have about this album. Too commercial? Anyway, it's quite good for someone like me. An accessible mix of various styles... everyone must find something he likes in this music box.

(Vooral zweten op: TocarMore and More, TocarAnd When I Die, TocarGod Bless the Child, TocarSpinning Wheel)

  • Plattenteller: Blood, Sweat & Tears - Child Ist The Father To The Man (1968)

Dann folgt Kooper’s “My Days Are Numbered”, ein philosophischer Big Band-Lovesong. Klasse. Darauf folgt dann mit “Without Her” von Harry Nilsson komponiertes Easy Listening auf musikalisch allerhöchstem Niveau, bevor “Just One Smile” (geschrieben von Randy Newman) wieder hymnischer ausfällt: “Just One Smile to / Make my world worth livin’ / A little world to build my world upon” - kann man es besser ausdrücken als in so manchem Stück, das auf dieser Scheibe verarbeitet wird? Schwer.

Das Intro, Kooper beginnt zu singen, man hört ihm den Schmerz förmlich an: “But the hands of time / Keep tickin’ on my back / Cause it’s been so long / Since I had her back beside me”. Noch dazu die Metaphern: “I can’t quit her / Cause in my darkest night / She comes on like a light”, (alp)traumhaft! Dann nimmt die Platte mit “Somethin’ Goin’ On” wieder Fahrt auf, das Intro hört sich an, als ob jemand an der Kirchenorgel abgedreht ist: “Somethin’ goin’ on / And I don’t know what it is” - genau.

Warscheinlich fällt meine Wahl letztendlich dann doch zunächst mal auf die beiden Singles “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know” und “I Can’t Quit Her”, die in den Charts keinerlei Eindruck gemacht haben, was mir ein Rätsel ist.

PLATZ 1: YOUNG KNIVES - SUPERABUNDANCE

PLATZ 2: COLD WAR KIDS - LOYALTY TO LOYALTY

PLATZ 3: WALTER BECKER - CIRCUS MONEY

PLATZ 4: LAST SHADOW PUPPETS - THE AGE OF THE UNDERSTATEMENT

Platz 4.

PLATZ 5: DIRTY PRETTY THINGS - ROMANCE AT SHORT NOTICE

Platz 5.

DIE SONGS DES JAHRES - TOP 20

    01. Young Knives - Counters
    02. Walter Becker - TocarCircus Money
    03. Last Shadow Puppets - Standing Next To Me
    04. Young Knives - Dyed In The Wool
    05. Young Knives - Fit 4 U
    06. Cold War Kids - Mexican Dogs
    07. Last Shadow Puppets - Calm Like You
    08. Dirty Pretty Things - Buzzards and Crows
    09. Rooney - TocarAre You Afraid?
    10. The Raconteurs - You Don't Understand Me
    11. Duffy - TocarWarwick Avenue
    12. Kings Of Leon - TocarSex On Fire
    13. Walter Becker - TocarPaging Audrey
    14. Young Knives - Light Switch
    15. Cold War Kids - TocarSomething Is Not Right With Me
    16. Young Knives - Up All Night
    17. Dirty Pretty Things - Plastic Hearts
    18. Young Knives - Terra Firma
    19. Last Shadow Puppets - My Mistakes Were Made For You

Schade!

    CLASSIC-ENTDECKUNG DES JAHRES

Die Entdeckung des Jahres im Bereich "Classic" sind eindeutig Blood, Sweat & Tears - was für eine perfekte Mischung aus Rock, Jazz, Blues, Funk und Soul. Alles drin.

  • Jim Beard and the new Walter Becker album!

    Abr 1 2008, 13h20 por GinaMizar5

    Monday, March 31
We've just wrapped up an international conference call with Siggy and Neb from the esteemed Radio Dupree in Sweden. It was a very important meeting. There is some news about Walter Becker's new album, courtesy of mr. Jim Beard. We're alas a little too tired right now to work with what was handed to us so graciously, so we figured it would be ultimately appropriate to make it an April Fools' Day article. So, for now, Jim's the word and see ya'll tomorrow!

We did post a little ditty over on a Steely Dan fan guestbook The Blue earlier as an appetizer:

Jim Beard: "The CD sounds very nice. Warm and fat. Great tunes and grooves. Nothing like 11TofW. Walter sounds great on it. I think the fans will be happy."

  • Top 20 for 2002 - Retrospective

    Fev 18 2008, 19h47 por edimervaldo

    "It's getting better, man!"
The "rookies of the year" are Blood, Sweat & Tears and Procol Harum. Like 2001, Classic Rock ruled the top 20.

Now, the list of the 20 most important songs for that year.

20 - Nickelback - TocarHow You Remind Me Well, the radio stations insisted so much in this song. Then, I was convinced to put it on the top 20. It's bubblegum, but I like it.
19 - Oasis - TocarGas Panic! When it was launched, I thought that Standing on the Shoulder of Giants was a poor album. In 2002 I bought it and discovered that it is the best Oasis' album.
18 - Canned Heat - TocarOn The Road Again The song is very good, and the vocals are fun.
17 - Slade - This Girl From times to times I discover a new wonderful shouting song of theirs
16 - Sally Oldfield - Night of the Hunters Moon Unfortunately, the only copy I have of this song is a poor old vinyl single
15 - George Harrison - TocarWhen We Was Fab A song that reminds me of the unstable beginning of the year
14 - Supertramp - TocarMy Kind Of Lady This song has a very good melody. It's a chic ballad
13 - Morris Albert - TocarFeelings A sad sad sad song for the sad sad sad moments
12 - INXS - Never Tear Us Apart It's a pity that Hutchence decided to hung himself. Maybe INXS were the best Aussie band
11 - The Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Now I don't like this song so much, but at the time I liked it
10 - Procol Harum - Pandora's Box Like "Night of the Hunters Moon", a great song I've got in a poor storage
09 - Emerson, Lake & Palmer - TocarPeter Gunn Keith Emerson playing made a excellent song even better
08 - Procol Harum - Conquistador Specially the live version with the orchestra
07 - The Moody Blues - TocarLost In A Lost World Reminds me the sundays cleaning the floor...
06 - Blood, Sweat & Tears - TocarI Love You More Than You'll Ever Know Their first album (Child Is Father to the Man) is one of the best ones that I've ever listened.
05 - Pink Floyd - See Emily Play In 2002 I discovered the Syd Barrett era. I think it's much better than the later albums
04 - Renaissance - TocarLet It Grow One of the best ballads I've ever listened
03 - Jethro Tull - TocarA New Day Yesterday A very powerful song
    02 - Blood, Sweat & Tears - TocarI Can't Quit Her Another BS&T song
01 - Nazareth - TocarThis Flight Tonight Their version for this Joni Mitchell's song is really awesome. It was also the "lucky song" of the year
