Editors Introductory

This guide is to educate other users which are into death metal but are either just into the new wave of death metal (so like slam death metal) or are just getting into this massive expansive genre. This will take you on a journey from the start to the end of Floridian death metal scene. All bands mentioned are worth the listen and also worth the odd CD buy to fit into your collection.

The Odyssey


The journey begins in the heart of Florida, the beating arteries of death metal. You may have heard of a lot of these bands, but everyone is deserved to have recognition with the start of the fourth phase (depending on the way you look at it) in the heavy metal family tree.

The first doesn’t come as a surprise. This is of course the legends Death who formed in 1984 with the general idea of trying to speed up the thrash scene and also put in more deep vocals. These were of cause the death growl. This has obviously progressed over the years into a more guttural vocal sound. But this rough growl, and backing that sounds like a melodic thrash that is even faster than speed thrash set up for more familiar artists to spawn.

This is like what happened, recently, with wigger slam death metal, once that initial idea has sprung up, you get the first wave of that genre as a sort of backlash for that creation by the pioneer. So, onto the the first of the first wave , now the initial idea was here it was time to let it loose. Now, yes officially these guys formed one year before Death. However, Possessed, a lot of the time are noted (there is a lot of debate about this) ‘re-identified’ Death’s sound to make a raw, rougher shout (more like speed thrash vocals) and a heavy beating drum beat that never seems to change within the song. This was yet historic with the Heavy Metal scene. Until then the music was either raw and underground, or melodic and high flowing vocals, but with this the music was first to put together the raw fast beating of the music with the harsh sounding of the vocals and, more importantly, still showing overtones of melodic rhythms.

Now, with this under way there were a lot of bands coming out like Loudblast, which incorporated the same structure as Death but with a revolution of breakdowns (which were usually at the start of their songs) and with hardcore-ish vocals (with also low whispering ‘evil’ screams). And more like this with Necrophagia, increasing the artistic value with gang chorus (which are at least two people singing at once in harmony like Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the wall) but these guys did lay some heavy double pedals, technical riffs of twisting anarchy and, of course, screaming and whispering to give that ‘evil’ overtone. Poison, from Germany, tailing towards the more black screams that happened later in the 90’s in black metal with Necrodeath, Mutilator, Messiah, Sepultura, Terminal Death and Vulcano taking the extreme Thrash option with Death metal harsh vocals and growls with it.

When the 90’s came in, the Floridian scene really stepped up its gear and so did the rest of the world. This was the last wave of the pioneering and on to the formation of new genres, like brutal death metal, black metal and slam death metal.

Editors Introductory

So, this thing is working well now, I can see the big differences from the pre-weekly editions group charts to how they look today. Still a few anomalies here and there but these will be squeezed to the last one after these artists below pound your ears!

This time just the artists below, haven’t had tiem to put anything up. But next week I might do something extra like a poll or something. Also, any suggests for names for the weekly editions would be fantastic. Eg. The Fifth Atrocity etc.

Week Main Listening: 23rd – 30th November

Fourth Edition

1) Defeated Sanity , You all know this band by now. The Prelude to Tragedy the first and full most, most epically produced guttural slamming death you could hear, with that living up to their name again with an album which blew my mind. That is indeed “Pslams of the Moribund”, this album slams, pounds, blasts and thrash riffs all the way down to a nail. Markus Keller was a bit dry with his vocals but now they have got rid of him, perhaps they get a much better range machine out in the scene, as their German I wonder if it will be Bastian from Provocation? All the rest is fine, slamming greatness from the Germans. Myspace

2) Kastrated, now I love finding awesome bands from your country, but I especially love it when you actually know a friend within the band you have got into. This is indeed the Burnley blasting slamming (weird quotes) band which has turned out a five furious songs on ”North-West Slam Fest” which also featured Ingested and Crepitation. This is truly the most up and coming slam death band that I like which hails from my country (and that is a big thing, a lot of slam scenes around major cities it seems these days). So, look out for Chris’s guttural vocals, Smith roaring blasting filling machine like drum work, Kenny and Tom’s guitar slamming riffs and of course the baseline tones from Al. Myspace

3) Malignant Rupture, is a young band from Summerville, south Carolina. Yes, it is slamming but it has got good side influences of old school death metal to. They sound a lot like Monstrosity in a weird way. It is groovy with a lot of blasts in between the fun slam riffs. The two songs on their myspace page are awesome. I hope they get a CD out soon! 4) Soils of Fate, the Swedes do love their death metal and don’t they do it well. Yes and here is yet another good slamming band hailing from the cold and daring lands of Scandinavia! With ex-Stabwound, MP5K and Repulsive Dissection members you know what you are getting for your money. This low down guttural, slam riff, blasting band lets out quality tunes out of their “Crime Syndicate” album of 2003 and really let it slam! Myspace

5) Vermicular Decay an interesting young band from USA again. Yet again the slams are here but also the strange combination with Cannibal Corpse-esque riffs (and also Suffocation) with a Sect of Execration tone with gutturals as low as Katalepsy! Myspace
