  • Acquired (December 2008)

    Dez 19 2008, 4h52 por mikem123

All the albums I've actually bought (CD and iTunes) this month, with my impressions from 1 (terrible) to 3 (solid) to 5 (eargasmic).

    Enslaved - Monumension - black metal - 2.5
Doesn't seem as focused as other Enslaved albums, so there are lots of parts that put me to sleep.

    Enslaved - Isa - progressive black metal - 4

It's true, this may be "Enslaved lite," but "Enslaved lite" is a lot better than "Amorphis lite" or "Emperor lite." Enslaved have successfully integrated psychedelic (Pink Floyd especially) flavours into their sound, which come mainly from the keyboardist Herbrand Larsen, who also does most of the clean vocals. This is still a pretty guitar based album. The guitarists Arve "Ice Dale" and Ivar Bjornson weave guitar riffs harmoniously, creating dark and primal, yet truly catchy, backdrops for bassist Grutle Kjellson's furious gutteral vocals and Nordic imagery. "Lunar Force" and the title-track are perfect slices of what some people call "progressive black metal," although post-black metal makes more sense to me. I don't feel like a storm is descending on me (most black metal); I feel like I am in a warm bubble as I watch the storm. The title-track has a very catchy riff, as well as one of the psychedelic keyboard breaks. Larsen chanting "watching you die with tears of ice" is absolutely memorable. "Lunar Force" has an unbelievably powerful riff that is permanently burned into my psyche. The album continues, picking up again at "Return to Yggdrasill" and not letting up through the monster 12 minute "Neogenesis." "Return to Yggdrasill" has another amazing harmonized riff and almost feels celestial with the heavy use of keyboards and acoustic guitars later on. One track that caught my eye the second or third time around was "Ascension," which has another surreal keyboard passage and uses an organ in a good way.

This album isn't as disturbing as most black metal. If anything, it's completely the opposite of black metal. Most black metal I know tries to destroy my psyche; "Isa" is a pleasing (but pretty dark) experience. The only track I wouldn't reccommend is "Bounded by Allegiance," but that's just me. I'm sure some would like it.

Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness - progressive rock, metal - 2.5

I want the hour of my life back. Basically, the band pulls out all the stops, including but not limited to: strings, sitars, eastern sounding melodies, mellotron, sound effects, acoustic guitars, blah, am I missing something? I wish Tchort had cut down on some of the excess, because this takes a lot of pretentiousness to appreciate. Listen to TocarA Change of Seasons, TocarBlack Rose Immortal, Crimson, or one of the prog classics if you want a good long song. This could be cut down by at least 2/3 and still been good.

Husker Du - Zen Arcade - hardcore punk - 5
A shocking album that, incredibly, mixes hardcore punk, pop music, psychedelia, and noise rock into a neurotic snapshot of the life of the messed up kid in the 80's. Words like harrowing, cathartic, and terrifying don't even begin to describe this album. More a sociological artifact than music in some places, this is not easy album to listen to. It's pretty rewarding though. Amid the hardcore cathartic bursts, there are a couple of beautiful piano interludes, as if to say that the brutal emotions are there for a purpose, not necessarily to avoid convention. I'm sure this represented more than a few peoples realities better than much of the pop muzak of the 80's. Great songs include: the traumatic "Pink Turns to Blue," the total anthem "Somewhere," the poppy acoustic song "Never Talking to You Again," and the emotional tour-de-force "Reocurring Dreams," which appears once as a shorter blast, and then as the full 14 minute piece. This is really way too diverse to be called punk rock, but this sheer unhinged emotional force is common in hardcore. I think this band defintely inspired many of the first emo and post-hardcore bands. It is one of the greatest album of the 80's to my ears.

    Lush - Gala - shoegaze - 5
This album is basically Lush's first 3 ep's put together. One of them was produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins, so it's easy to see how much the ladies and guys of Lush enjoyed the 80's dream pop music. They play a very effective brand of it though, which came to be known as shoegazer rock. The vocals and guitars are dreamy, and well, "lush" is a very good word to describe them. I found this album very relaxing and easy to get into. The vocals are sometimes smothered beneath layers of guitar, but this actually works well for most shoegazer bands.

    Moonsorrow - V: Havitetty - folk metal - 4.5

...And the Finns once again reclaim the folk-epic-viking-whatvever crown. What an album! This totally blows Light of Day, Day of Darkness away. I was swept away. I could not put this album down. It is basically two songs that go for about an hour. There is a nod to the viking kings Bathory at the beginning of track 2, but I feel like Moonsorrow has sort of grown out of their Bathory influence (some might say dependence). Epic, orgasmic, this is how you write a metal epic.

    Mortiis - Født til å herske - dark ambient - 4
Pretty cool gothic/dark ambient album with 2 27 minute ambient but melodic songs. I was surprised at the direction Mortiis went in after hearing how extreme Emperor got. I think this is as good as the 80's gothic masterpieces by bands like Black Tape for a Blue Girl and Dead Can Dance.

My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River - doom metal, gothic - 4.5
This really is the best MDB album. "The Cry of Mankind" repeats an epicly sorrowful siren-like melody over and over, giving way to the verses and later a (kinda unnecessary) 3 or 4 minute ambient passage. The rest of the album is almost as good: "A Sea to Suffer In," "Two Winters Only," and "Your Shameful Heaven" are still some of the best songs MDB has written. Aaron Strainthorpe seems to be terminally depressed on this album. The combination of his mournful drawl and morbid lyrics, the crawling guitars and the somber violins, and the romantic elements creates a very austere atmosphere which is still something MDB can do better than 90% of the bands that try. I'm left comfortable numb, and in a way I enjoy this, but much differently than say a Doors or Wilco album, obviously. This is not happy music, but it is likeable music. I'm excited to see where this goes, and I don't care where. My version includes a couple bonus live songs, one in which the singer cracks his voice from despair. Truly a MDB moment.

Ramones - Rocket to Russia - punk rock - 4
Goofy punk rock fun fun fun music from one of the top bands of New York's CBGB's. Like all Ramones reissues these days, mine has shiteloads of bonus tracks, outtakes, live performances etc, and the liner notes give a good perspective of the urban life their music turns inside out. They turn the most serious and unhealthy topics into 2-3 minute bubblegum pop songs with snotty vocals and buzzsaw guitars rampaging throughout. I love the snotty "he don't care" in the call-and-response of "I Don't Care" and "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" is a classic. The dumber the choruses and topics, the more I like this (see "We're a Happy Family"). Overall, the best Ramones album I own.

Spirit - Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus - psychedelic rock - 4
This album comes right from the late 60's psychedlic/counter-culture scene of the USA, and is full of far-outness. I can't remember half the song right now, but this album is really great to 'experience' as opposed to remember later. 3 stand out: "Space Child," "When I Touch You," and "Street Worm," although I could've easily said "Morning Will Come" or "Animal Zoo." Just get high. S'all good.

Tank - Filth Hounds of Hades - nwobhm - 4
This band was put together by The Damned's bassist/singer Algy Ward, and they share the asskicking simplicity of punk, if not the sound. The guitars are raw and typical of the NWOBHM sound that bands like Iron Maiden and Samson did at the time. This is riff-based, with good ones coming in the stupidly named "(He Fell in Love With) A Stormtrooper" (maybe that's the point, dumb and fun), "Run Like Hell" whose lyrics bring a big dumb grin to my face, and the most metal song of all, "Blood, Guts, and Beer." This is low-brow, party metal with punk and Motorhead influences, and I like it.

    Wintersun - Wintersun - melodic death metal - 3.5

It was hard for me to decide what genre this is. While it has some death metal elements, and is melodic, it`s almost more like black metal or folk metal at times, with it`s emphasis on frostbitten-ness and, well, winter. I found some of the tracks epic and good (Starchild, Death and the Healing), while the effect of others wears off after a few listens (Beyond the Dark Sun). Overall, though, with fantastic songs like Winter Madness (truly an high moment for Finnish metal), I can`t complain. I`m close to liking this a lot, but there are some moments that kinda leave me cold, and not in the way Jari Maenpaa and co. want.

Within Temptation - The Silent Force - gothic rock, pop - 3
It all gets a little too fancy and over-emotional at times. I wish that the singer Sharon del Adel would vary the emotions her vocals represent, because this whole "drowning in tears" thing has been done before, so it's not really special, just annoying. Other than that, it's a pretty enjoyable album. She actually is a good singer when she tones it down a bit (something Tarja never learned to do), like on the beautiful ballad "Somewhere" and the graceful symphonic rock of "It's the Fear." I don't mind that the guitars are polished and pushed back in favour of keyboards and orchestration. It's not that WT were becoming more pop that irritates me, it's that I don't believe all these *grief and tears* displays come from the heart, so it is kind of hard to put my heart into it when these emotions are so commonplace and overused.

  • 5 awesome bands you've never heard of

A list of my favourite bands that are extremely underground or unsigned. I've provided download links for all the ones that are currently without a record label, or whose work is unavailable elsewhere.

    1. 2 Bullet

A Japanese EBM/industrial metal group. This group is one of my favourite bands right now. First off, they're interesting for mixing guitars and synth with about equal emphasis. Second off, they're an EBM act with practically no techno influences, and undistorted vocals, which makes them completely different from basically every other EBM band except Das Ich. They're also very theatrical. The theme seems to be "revolution", and they start shirtless-wrestling with each other at a lot of stage shows. They're really talented and I think pretty much anyone who likes EBM or industrial metal will like them.
You can get their free album You're Downloading Anarchism here:
    http://2bullet.net/xoops/modules/contents0/index.php?id=8

    2. Vanished Empire

This band is a side project of Dee Lee from 2 Bullet(Collaborating with Dj Chihiro), and is probably the least known of any band on this list with only 16 listeners on last.fm. It's similar to 2 Bullet, but darker, and without guitars.

    3. Acretongue

What genre is this band? Ethereal, atmospheric, avant-gardeish electronic music. People usually call it EBM, and it makes appearances on compilation such as Endzeit Bunker(an industrial compilation), but it's really not. It is, however, extremely awesome.
I'm actually quite excited about this band, since it's excellent and apparently their first album is nearing completion. As it is they've only put out limited edition demos and made a few compilation appearances.

    4. Killer Bug

Some of the harshest noise out there. Killer Bug was an alias Kazumoto Endo used to use for his pedal-based noise music. I don't like to use a cliched phrase, but it's definitely not for the faint of heart.
You can get a compilation of his work here(remove the space in the URL):

    5. Control Alt Deus

Extremely trancey EBM from Portugal. It's pretty awful generic, but it does generic-ness better than a lot of big name aggrotech bands.
