  • LJB July mixtape: Hey There's a Dog Over There!

    Ago 7 2009, 22h54 por tom_dissonance

The ever-missed John Peel used to theorise that any record with birdsong on it would probably be automatically good. (The title track of Bridget St. John's Ask Me No Questions, which Peelie produced and released on his Dandelion label, even takes a break at the end for an interval of church bells and hand-picked birdsong clips from the BBC Archives).

i sort of feel the same about records with the sound of barking dogs on. i will pretty much always listen to a track that features a dog barking, even if it is completely gratuitous, silly or unrelated to the song. This holds true even if the dog is hamfistedly sampled (DMX), not even a real dog (Slim Gaillard), or even both at the same time (the truly egregious Woofers and Tweeters Ensemble). i'm still not quite sure why this is.

Anyway, July's mixtape is entitled Hey There's a Dog Over There!1 and each of the 20 tracks feature either real or simulated woofing. Weirdly, i've got enough of this sort of stuff to make another mixtape again of it, so i might drop that some time in the future.

Click the link at the bottom for the mixed version or hit up the blog for individual files.

    1. M.I.A. – "Bamboo Banga" (from Kala, 2007)
Dog action? Some barking samples, most notably the confusingly sexy bit where she sings about "doggin' on the bonnet of your red Honda" (blimey) and a vicious-sounding snarl abruptly breaks the reverie.

    2. Bilge Pump – "TocarSling Yr Hook" (Let Me Breathe, 2002)
Dog action? Full-on free jazz barking solo from 01:42 to close.

    3. Frank Zappa – "Hot Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel" (Broadway the Hard Way, 1988)
Dog action? In the form of Obvious Samples played as percussion on what is presumably some sort of early sampling keyboard, presumably by Bobby Martin, live in concert. Pretty silly.

    4. Jane's Addiction – "TocarBeen Caught Stealing" (Ritual de lo Habitual, 1990)
Dog action? Iconic. They open the tune and attempt to keep the beat over the first few bars, with varying success.

    5. Black Sheep – "Similak Child" (A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing, 1991)
Dog action? Wins extra credit for actually interpolating the barking into the beat as a percussion instrument, as two dogs stage an enthusiastic bark-off.

    6. De La Soul – "TocarDog Eat Dog" (Stakes Is High, 1996)
Dog action? Freeform barking underpins chorus and parts of verses, emphasising cannibalistic nature of rap game.

    7. The Mighty Underdogs – "TocarDoglude" (droppin' science fiction, 2008)
Dog action? Rhythmical, dense, layered - total dog win basically. Even a series of epic howls to conclude in proper style.

    8. Slim Gaillard Trio – "SERENADE TO A POODLE" (1947-1951, 2002)
Dog action? Slim is evidently pissing himself all the way through this tune, possibly at the instigation of questionable dog impersonator Jim Hawthorne, whose overdone barking refrains turn frankly ridiculous by the end of the track. But in kind of a good way.

    9. Le Tigre – "What's Yr Take On Cassavetes?" (Le Tigre, 1999)
Dog action? Dogs contribute jubilant barking coda to discussion of art cineaste reputation.

    10. Tom Waits – "Buzz Fledderjohn" (Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, 2006)
Dog action? Providing rough bluesy ambience to a tune that could well have been recorded in a barnyard.

    11. Cassetteboy – "TocarDogs Dogs Dogs Dogs Oh Yeah Dogs" (The Parker Tapes, 2002)
Dog action? Dog sample nirvana. "No cats here, of course..."

    12. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown – "TocarAlligator Eating Dog" (No Looking Back, 1992)
Dog action? Fearsome introductory growling totally misrepresents really rather jolly song.

    13. Contrastate – "TocarPoodles In Practice Dress At The Battersea Dogs Opera" (Four Years In 30 Seconds : A Collection Of Music From Around The World, 2007)
Dog action? Fucking weird spoken word/noise action. Dogs saturate its 34 seconds. The second half of the parent album also features it (along with all the other tracks) played backwards. Damn, last.fm, you don't half dish out some fucked-up recommendations sometimes.

    14. Cassetteboy – "TocarYeah Duggan... Austin, TX" (Mick's Tape, 2005)
Dog action? Backing up The World's Whitest Rapper as he pays tribute to the dog in question.

    15. Woofers & Tweeters Ensemble – "We Can Work It Out" (Beatle Barkers, 1983)
Dog action? Oh man, this whole record is made of really poor primitive sampling-keyboard arrangements of Beatles songs. "Guys, this is just RIDICULOUS, and totally disrespectful to the music of The Beatles. I mean WOW....jeez." comments one Heather. Well, i agree, but i think that's why it's so good. (Commonly misnamed as "Beatle Barkers"; that's actually the album title).

    16. DMX – "TocarStop Being Greedy" (It's Dark And Hell Is Hot, 1998)
Dog action? Maybe the single most prolific dog-sampler in music, it'd be remiss to skip him. Sometimes his sampler doesn't work so he just does the dog voices himself.

    17. Man Parrish – "Hip Hop, Be-Bop (Don't Stop)" (12", 1982)
Dog action? Seminal throw-everything-at-the-wall-see-what-sticks '80s electro groundbreaker finds time for a snatch of pitch-shifted canine in the mid-section. Then promptly on to the next thing. Brill.

    18. The Flaming Lips – "The Big Ol' Bug Is the New Baby Now" (Zaireeka, 1997)
Dog action? Gorgeous semi-spoken tribute to Stephen Drozd's dog (and Zaireeka closer) ends in an cacophonous eight-channel avalanche of barking (if you're doing it right).

    19. The Orb – "Towers Of Dub" (U.F. Orb, 1992)
Dog action? Takes up all of side three of U.F. Orb. Man's best friend makes an early bid for glory as Kris Weston and Dr Alex dub the piss out of him.

    19. Can – "TocarAumgn" (Tago Mago, 1971)
Dog action? It's a prerequisite of making a groundbreaking, extended sample collage that a barking dog will be required at some point. This set that rule.

    20. Wonder Dog – "Ruff Mix" (12", 1982)
Dog action? Wow. This is why everybody hates the '80s.

1 Inspired by an entirely throwaway line in an early episode of Friends. Janice asks who of the group have nearly slept with one another, and they all attempt to change the subject swiftly. "There's a dog out there!" was Joey's priceless effort. i've only just found the actual script just now, but i misremembered it as "Hey there's a dog over there!" for years, so that's yer title. Yeh, so maybe it was a Seinfeld rip-off, but there was still some great comedy writing on that show at times.

    every Friday 2pm till 3pm e.s.t ( GMT-5 )

What do they put in the water in Cerritos?
Whatever it is, this former farming community and
current model of American suburbia is THE unlikely
breeding ground for bona fide turntablists.
The current generation of hip hop wizards
surfaced in the early 90s. These visionaries
unplugged their nintendo Entertainment Systems and
traded them in for technics 1200s.
They pleaded with their parents to drive them
to pro sound in Garden Grove to buy the latest mixers,
and snuck into the 18 and over parties thrown by Legend Entertainment,
dreaming of the day they too would
drop dope beats and move the crowd.
By the time the mid to early 90s materialized,
the Cerritos D.J. scene was dominated by three groups:
Audio FX, Grand Groove, Icon Events.
The competition between the three groups was intense,
and claimed more than a few lives.
The future of hip hop looked grim, until
DJ Butta of Grand Groove decided to put an end
to the silliness, and unite the three powerhouses.
The troika put away their differences and united,
behind the Funky President, becoming The Cerritos All Stars.
Today, the All Stars, three in one, and one in three,
use their powers for good, and not evil. They aim to
influence the next generation of turntablists, and
complete the cipher, ever mindful of the turntablists
that came before them. Cerritos All Stars Radio,
the brain child of DJ Kwest of Icon Events,
is the All Stars' voice, their chosen medium to spread peace,
love and hip hop. Long live Cerritos. Long live the All Stars.

    I'm a mexican / german / bohemian / virgo / Ex graffiti writer / breaker / new waver
    (Actually I'm still a new waver...LOL!) DJ / Events Promoter & Musician.
I don't drink ...do drugs or smoke.. (No real reason... I just feel like I don't need it.)
In Chicago most people know me as a dj & party promoter,
I have been spinning records for over 20 some years &
throwing parties for nearly as long. I have never been very happy
doing things the easy way or even playing what everyone else is playing.
GOD!!! I HATE THE radio!!! Well.. most of the time ...
If you think you know what I'm going to play... your wrong.
I like to keep people guessing... Keep them on their toes...
I like taking chances ... mixing stuff that you wouldn't
normally hear played together. I know it may sound selfish but,
I only play what moves me. I think
I just give my audience more credit than most djs
do. Yeah, some folks want to hear the sing along stuff ...
but some don't. I try to take care of those peeps without losing everyone else.
I'm perfectly fine clearing a dance floor ...
this is how new classics are made. I don't worry because
I know exactly how to get them all rite back out there
(I have 50 Cent records too) I just don't play them
the same way everyone else does. LOL!

    Originally from Houston, TX, Tagg
started traveling the world when his mother joined
the air force in 1986. Having listened to hip hop
music off and on, he moved to Tokyo Japan in 1990
where he became immersed in the hip hop culture
that dominated his school and the city around him.
Getting into the music from an outside culture (being overseas),
he began listening to artists from all over the US
and world, rather than defining his taste by
any coast or genre. In the late 90s while
living in Seattle with a roommate who DJ Tagg
found his own love for the turntables.
He quickly began learning to spin records as
well as how to spend all of his money on them.
He began spinning with his roommate at house parties
and the rest is history. After joining the air force
himself in 1999, he moved to Albuquerque,New Mexico in 2000 where he took off.
He began spinning at New Mexicos legendary Vinyl
    and Verses
in 2003 and was the resident dj by
the end of that year. He also worked with local
promoters such as Slo Motion entertainment as
the opening dj for numerous concerts, events, and

    DJ Johnny Blaze
    every Monday 4pm till 6pm e.s.t ( GMT-5 )
Los Angeles, Ca – With the continuous fall of commercial radio,
many people have ventured into the world of satellite
and online radio. In early 2007 So Prup Enterprises
founder TuSlic started M.E.T.H Radio. After only three episodes,
M.E.T.H Radio had already become popular throughout
the hip-hop scene reaching up to 5000 listeners.
Known for playing all styles of hip hop and
breaking in unknown artist, M.E.T.H radio was
labeled “ the last of a dieing
breed in hip-hop radio.” M.E.T.H radio interviewed
the likes of Spider Loc, The Young Hogs, Spit, 4EN6,
Young Klev (formally of Black Wall Street) &
others. Met by lots of controversy M.E.T.H Radio
was banned from some popular west coast websites
and host TuSlic was barred to real or “overly-opinionated.
After almost a year hiatus M.E.T.H Radio came back
with a new name and format. Now called so prup radio,
TuSlic brought in LaMotte to co-host & DJ Johnny Blaze
to spin in the mix at the end of each show.
so prup radio continues to break in new artist
but maintains a versatile play list that attracts all crowds.
TuSlic & LaMotte discuss many issues ranging from
politics to life issues during the topic
of the week segment of the show.
so prup radio has already bypassed the success
of M.E.T.H Radio and is climbing to new heights each and every week.
With there straightforward approach, TuSlic &
LaMotte have gained a love-hate relationship among
there listeners. so prup radio has garnered interest
from many online publications and radio companies
to syndicate the show to a bigger audience.
so prup radio has also merged with the popular
    website hiphoprealm.net and created soprupradio.com.
Soprupradio.com, which is spearheaded by the show,
has already emerged into one of the premiere
    hip-hop/urban lifestyle websites online.
hiphoprealm, which has been operating for nearly
a decade has closed its doors to concentrate completely
on building so prup radio and soprupradio.com into a powerhouse.
Also online community weserious.com has teamed up
with so prup radio on a mission to bring various online
urban communities together into one forum. so prup radio
is a strong supporter of unity in all forms and hopes
with weserious.com and hiphoprealm that it can create
a movement that not only can benefit other musicians but also the fans as well!

    The Hip Hop Project
    every saturday 8:30pm till 12:30am e.s.t ( GMT-5 )

(L to R: Rev. Rob, TernAround, Cosm Roks, DJ Monky, Eves, & Roper)

Lional Freeman founded the Hip Hop Project in 1995 in an effort to give chicago hip-hop artists a media to express their opinions and showcase their talents. Now, eleven years later the hip hop project still airs every Saturday night and has become a staple in chicago's hip-hop community. Broadcasting out of Loyola University's Rogers Park campus, The Hip Hop Project combines live mixing and social commentary that you cant hear anywhere else on the dial. It's 7:30-11:30 pm timeslot provides Chicago with a better opportunity to hear what's going on in the city we call home.
Local talent has always remained our concentration, but we still offer the highest quality hip-hop from across the globe. During their tenure on our show, TernAround, Roper, Eves & DJ Monky continue to mix live weekly; a procedure still not used in most college radio shows in Chicago. Combined with Cosm Roks, the show's host and executive producer, the hip hop project offers a one of a kind radio experience by staying fresh with old school hip hop tradition as a foundation.
Now, in 2006 The Hip Hop Project have released their first nationally distributed mixtape; "Street Triumph: The Official Freddie Foxxx aka Bumpy Knuckles Mixxxtape (Hosted by DJ Premier)" is selling out all accross the world (Fat Beats). Working with hip hop icons aside, the THHP crew continues to rep their city in the mixtape game by working with Chicago's up and coming talents year round.

  • You want to start discovering hip-hop, but don't have an clue where to start?

    Ago 29 2008, 13h38 por Sybje

    Well here's some help!
So i made this top 100 (for the year 2008) based on the opinions of 29 fok! users, who all sent in their personal top 20. So why not sharing it, it was a fuckload of work anyway. To give you an idea how votingprocess look like, the number 1.'s on the top 20's were worth 20 points and their number 20's 1 point. you do the math.

*further notes; nieuw and nuevo mean -> new but i'm to lazy to change them into english words, and it makes the list looks like utter crap*

    § Position in the top 100 2008

  • Top 25 Rap Albums

    Mai 23 2008, 14h13 por pamento

I'm a little bored so I thought that I would come up with this list and my $0.02 on each album.

The list is limited to one album per artist.

    Here we go....

    25. Slick Rick - The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick

Ricky D displays some of the best storytelling ever over some nice Bomb Squad productions.

    24. Scarface - The Fix

Face is one of my favorite Southern MC's. On this album he shows you what his life is like without coming off as another gangster rapper.

Note: I'm getting into The Diary. It might replace this album.

    23. Eminem - The Eminem Show

Em's most consistent album. A lot more mature and he finally perfected his flow.

    22. Black Sheep - A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing

If you didn't laugh while listening to this album, kill yo self.

    21. The Roots - Do You Want More?!!!??!

Jazzy, mellow, fun Roots >>> The Roots now

    20. Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx

One of the many classics from the Wu. Its a shame that he didn't make another album as good as this one.

    19. UGK - Ridin' Dirty

Pimp C was one hell of a producer. Very entertaining gangsta rap record.

    18. Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet

Tocar911 Is A Joke, Flavor Flav's solo track, is easily one of best songs I have ever heard.

    17. Mos Def - Black On Both Sides

Mos' only masterpiece. It's hard to listen to BOBS, then listen to The New Danger. He was such a raw MC, but his verse on Rising Down sounds like a return to form.

    16. Ghostface - Supreme Clientele

A weird ass album. RZA's verse on Nutmeg has me rolling every time i hear it. Hilarious skits, great raps, crazy beats. What more do you need?

    15. LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out

I like this more than Radio. It has more of a balance of fun and hard tracks.

    14. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

This album set the standard for sampling in hip-hop.

    13. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)

One of the most important album released during the resurgence of East Coast Hip Hop scene.

    12. Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt

Even though he bit the whole Mafioso theme from Raekwon, he pulled it off really well.

    11. Goodie Mob - Soul Food

Four of the best MC's in the south spit some socially conscious lyrics over some of the best Organized Noise productions ever. Cee-Lo pretty much steals the show on every song.

    10. Dr. Dre - The Chronic

Arguably the best produced rap album ever.

    9. Mobb Deep - The Infamous

A very dark album. The production definitely influenced east coast rap albums that came in the future.

    8. Common - Resurrection

Entirely produced by No I.D., this shows Commom at his lyrical peak. The MC'ing on here is insane. After listening to this album for years I still catch something new.

    7. Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die

One of the best concept albums in rap music. And the intro is easily the best intro ever...

    6. A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders

Sometimes I like MM more, sometimes i like The Low End Theory more. Right now I'm rolling with Midnight because I think it's more consistent.

    5. De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead

Smart, avant-garde hip hop. They need to regain their sense of humor and make another album.

    4. GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords

Intelligent, hardcore lyrics. I thought this album had the RZA's best beats and one of Ghostface's best verses.

    3. OutKast - Stankonia

Their weirdest and most consistent album, incorporating funk, electronica and rock elements into the album. Nowhere as boring as the previous two.

    2. Ice Cube - Death Certificate

Nobody was safe from Cube. White people (Horny Lil Devil), Asian people (Black Korea), even N.W.A. was shook after No Vaseline came out. He did what he wanted to do and that's what made this album so great.

    1. Nas - Illmatic

Nas gets his hands on some the best beats ever made and rhymes his ass off on everyone of em.

    Honorable Mentions
    MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday
Eightball & MJG - Comin' Out Hard
    Foreign Exchange - Connected
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
    Big Pun - Capital Punishment
    Madvillain - Madvillainy

Albums I haven't heard yet but need to...
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full
    Digital Underground - Sex Packets
    Redman - Whut? Thee Album
    N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
