  • you are on drugs

    Jan 12 2009, 22h48 por ShShawShShane

before I get to the subject line, I'd just like to mention that you can now watch the premiere of the second season of Flight of the Conchords online at both HBO http://www.hbo.com/conchords/ & IMDB http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi1626342169/ <---(you must be a registered user). it wont air on television 'til sunday. the episode is hilarious, as per usual, and the song at the end is now one of my favorite Conchords songs.

moving on, a friend recently asked me to make him a very specific sort of mix cd. I eagerly accepted the challenge and ended up with a playlist over three albums long. I edited it down slightly, removing any tracks that broke the seven & half minute mark (which sadly cut out tracks by Joanna Newsom, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Fuck Buttons), and ended up with a three disc mix. each disc runs slightly under 80 minutes, so you can burn your own at home. I'm putting up all 3 track lists for your listening enjoyment. I heartily suggest being a lifelong fan of every artist listed. get on it!

  • Top Ten for 2008, Honorable Mentions, and Discoveries

    Dez 19 2008, 9h51 por AnUprightBear

Some people reminisce about the passing year by sitting in front of a nice fire with their family and some egg nog. Some people look back on the year by obsessively listing and judging things. Guess which type of person I am.

    Top Ten Albums
    10. The Mae Shi – HLLLYH
There are just not enough solid innovative rock albums out there, especially ones that just straight up rock. The Mae Shi do this extremely well.
    9. The Hold Steady – Stay Positive
I would say this was the summer album of the year. I feel I might be rating it too highly but they put on an amazing show and I’ve just gained such a connection with The Hold Steady this year that it’s hard not to rate it so highly.
    8. No Age – Nouns
Great noise rock. More cohesive than Weirdo Rippers. They put on a great show. Also, one of the loudest shows I’ve been to. If you get the chance, watch High School Record, as well. It’s like if Napoleon Dynamite didn’t suck and was carefully written and directed by someone wanting to capture their high school experience and didn’t just clumsily want to make fun of the weird kid for being the weird kid.
    7. Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes
Mmmmmm delicious harmonies. I just love listening to this album. It just transports me to some sort of idealized, snowy countryside and relaxes me every time.
    6. Spiritualized – Songs in A&E
I kept seeing this album all over the place so I finally gave it a couple spins and it’s pretty god damn good. I really like the diverse styles of the songs but how the album works so well as a whole.
    5. TV on the Radio – Dear Science,
I could tell this was going to be one of the year’s best when I first listened to it. It’s just such a solid album. I didn’t really like Return to Cookie Mountain as much as other people did but, for me, this album felt more solid and I guess just tighter overall.
    4. Atlas Sound – Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel
This album basically kept me from going crazy earlier this year. The whole thing is really solid, especially “Recent Bedroom”. I love Bradford Cox.
    3. Titus Andronicus – The Airing Of Grievances
Punk rock at it’s finest. Amazingly kick ass lyrics over rock-out-with-your-cock-out, flippin-the-bird-to-everyone jams make for a fucking awesome album. The whole thing is just so fist-pumpingly awesome. I’m still really disappointed I missed their show earlier this year. But I look forward to hearing from them for years to come.
    2. Department of Eagles – In Ear Park
Killer song writing. I get more out of each song with each listen. At first I was pretty unimpressed, even as a huge Grizzly Bear fan. But it’s really grown on me and I just love the whole orchestral sound of the whole album. No one writes songs quite like Daniel Rossen.
    1. Deerhunter – Microcastle
By far my favorite album of this year. Ever since I really gave Cryptograms a chance, I’ve been hooked by everything Bradford Cox touches. This album has fewer tape loops and atmospherics, which I tend to like and loved on Cryptograms, but the song writing definitely ups the ante here and makes this album the best of the year. Weird Era Cont. is pretty great too, i just haven't listened to it nearly as much.

Honorable mentions/Stuff I didn’t have a chance to listen to very much
King Khan & The Shrines – The Supreme Genius Of King Khan
This album only misses the top ten because it’s not quite as solid as the others. Imagine everything awesome about 60s rock boiled down and led by a crazy awesome Indian dude.
    of Montreal – Skeletal Lamping
This is a really good album but it’s just no where near as good as Hissing Fauna. I had it in my top ten for a while but mostly because of several songs I really like. “Nonpareil of Favor”, “Touched Something’s Hollow”, “Gallery Piece” and “Id Engager” are pretty great songs but the rest left a lot to be desired, particularly the lyrics. The choppy, schizophrenic song structures may have allowed ideas that may not have ever seen the light of day to be put on display but I think it left a lot of ideas undeveloped.
    Man Man – Rabbit Habits
Solid album just not as good, especially lyrically, as Six Demon Bag.
    Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend
Great catchy popy interesting album but other than that eeeeh.
The Ruby Suns – Sea Lion
I really like listening to this album but once I’m done with it, I find it difficult to remember anything from it.
    Crystal Antlers – EP
Definitely looking forward to hearing more from them and seeing them live eventually.
Frightened Rabbit – The Midnight Organ Fight
From what I’ve heard this album is pretty good especially “The Twist”, “Heads Roll Off”, and “Keep Yourself Warm”
    HEALTH – HEALTH
Beautiful noise. But even as an ardent supporter (heatedly arguing with some of the pissed off crowd as they opened for of Montreal), I’d have to admit they’re sometimes hard to listen to (mostly because of my frequent head aches). But I think if they could create an album of songs like “Perfect Skin”, “Heaven”, and “Crimewave” they would have a classic on their hands. The new stuff I heard live sounds really promising.
    The Dodos – Visiter
    Love the guitar and rhythm.
    Ponytail – Ice Cream Spiritual
Worth your time if not just for “Beg Waves” and “Die Allman Bruder”
Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head – Glistening Pleasure
Catchy stuff just not quite solid as an album. They’re great live though.
Times New Viking – Rip It Off
Love the lo-fi noise of it all. Great album.
    El Guincho – Alegranza
If Panda Bear grew up in Brazil, this is what his music would sound like.
Hercules and Love Affair – Hercules And Love Affair
Great danceable tracks. If you wish that Antony and the Johnsons or LCD Soundsystem had a baby, this album is for you.
    Fuck Buttons – Street Horrrsing
    Sweet, sweet noise-tronics.
    High Places – 03/07-09/07
Great songs. I definitely look forward to hearing more from them.
    Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles
The “Crimewave” remix is amazing but the rest of the album isn’t quite as good. That being said it’s still pretty good stuff.
    Islands – Arm’s Way
Just a bit too much polish and not enough heart.
    Paavaharju – Laulu Laakson Kukista
Great to listen to when going to sleep. There are some really beautiful moments here but there’s also a lot of space.
Lil’ Wayne – Tha Carter III
Lil’ Wayne is probably my favorite rapper out there because he may be a lot like other rappers but he’s weird enough to take chances and experiment. Also, his rhymes are usually pretty good.
    The Magnetic Fields – Distortion
Good album but a lot of it kinda sounds same-ish.
Xiu Xiu – Women As Lovers
Solid Xiu Xiu album but I didn’t find any heart breakers or breath takers on this one.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!
Solid album, just haven’t listened to it much. I want to download more and I guess understand his career as a whole first, I guess.
    Portishead – Third
I definitely need to listen to this album more.
Wolf Parade – At Mount Zoomer
I’ve listened to it maybe once after I reviewed it early in the year. That being said, I did enjoy it and I definitely look forward to hearing more from them.
Black Mountain – In The Future
    Solid Zeppelin/prog rock revival jams.
    Andrew Bird – Soldier On
Looks like the next album will be pretty good.
Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours
I just wasn’t very impressed, although I do really like “Light and Music”
Girl Talk – Feed the Animals
Too much rap focus and not enough weird stuff. Still a great album though.
    The Bug – London Zoo
Haven’t really listened to it a whole lot but I definitely like it. The guy’s voice kinda bugs me though.
Sigur Ros – Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust
Pretty good but it’s just no Agaetis byrjun.
    Beach House – Devotion
Haven’t listened to it enough to really judge it other than I liked it.
    Jay Reatard
I can't remember which one of his albums came out this year but he's freakin awesome and everything I've heard by him is pretty gosh darn kick ass.

Stuff I didn’t really get around to
Brian Eno & David Byrne – Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
    WHY? – Alopecia
Drive-By Truckers – Brighter Than Creation
    M83 – Saturdays = Youth
    Mount Eerie – Lost Wisdom
    DJ/rupture – Uproot
Air France – No Way Down EP
The Very Best – Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit are The Very Best
Fucked Up – The Chemistry of Common Life
    Santogold – Santogold
Silver Jews – Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea
Death Cab for Cutie – Narrow Stairs
Bonnie “Prince” Billy – Lie Down in the Light
Marnie Stern – This Is it and I Am it and You Are it and so Is That and He Is it and She Is it and it Is it and That is That
Los Campesinos – Hold on Now, Youngster

    Discoveries
These are all bands and artists that I have come across in this past year and I just felt I should document my musical growth I guess. A fair amount of them I’ve known about for quite some time but they just never clicked with me until this year.
    Brian Eno
I heard his name dropped so many times that i figured i should find out what the fuss was all about. And then I found out. Everything I've heard from his early glam stuff to his ambient stuff to even his producing is pretty amazing. I absolutely love Here Comes The Warm Jets and the more i listen to Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy and Another Green World the more i love them.
    Tom Waits
I can't get enough Tom Waits. There's something about his personality and the disparate elements that make up his music that keeps me wanting more. At first I didn't see what the big deal was but then I listened to the live VH1 album where he tells stories about his songs and I went back and fell in love with Raindogs.
    Phil Spector girl groups
I honestly haven't given this collection a lot of listens (Back to Mono) but what I have listened to has made me appreciate the influence it's had over the music I love.
    The Magnetic Fields
69 Love Songs is pretty darn awesome.
    Microphones
It's nice to hear an artist make such quiet intimate music. Rarely is music this affecting.
    The Olivia Tremor Control
    Psychedelic awesomeness.
    Andrew Jackson Jihad
    Amazing lyrics, addicting music.
    The Replacements
Let It Be is such a good album.
    Sonic Youth
I really only listened to Daydream Nation and other select songs by them and then I realized the mistake I had made.
    Silver Jews
Amazing lyrics. American Water was definitely a grower and now I love it.
    Bob Dylan
Sure I liked a fair amount of his songs but it wasn't until I downloaded some full albums and really took the time to listen to them that I feel I really started appreciating his work.
    Neil Young
    Same deal as Bobby D.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
I had Trout Mask Replica for a long time but I could never really get into it. I saw the objective importance the weirdness of the album had on influencing future music but that didn't make me like it anymore. It wasn't until I got into Tom Waits that I went back and was able to appreciate Captain Beefheart.
    Sebadoh
I had III for a long time but there was just too much on it and too many demos and b-sides that I'd always lose interest and move on. Harmacy and Bubble and Scrape changed my mind about them.
    The Mountain Goats
I'd always liked "This Year", "Woke Up New" and "Cotton" but it wasn't until I listened to All Hail West Texas that I couldn't get enough.
    Dinosaur Jr.
A great band with amazing guitar that, for whatever reason (even though I saw J. Mascis live years ago), I just didn't get around to listening to until this year.
    The Breeders
I'm not exactly sure if it was this year or the end of last year that I really got into them but I'm going to put them on here because of how awesome they are. It's like if Bikini Kill was more interesting and made music with the Pixies.
    Aphex Twin
At first I saw him as being a sort of novelty in electronic music but "Avril 14th" single handedly made me take a closer look.
    Black Lips
They're just so awesome. I just couldn't get enough of them this summer.
    Black Bear
Similar to Microphones in the lo-fi bedroom rock intimacy of the album and the lyrics which made me instantly fall in love with them.
    Destroyer
Definitely a grower but it was ultimately the lyrics that sold me. Also, "Notorious Lightening"
My Bloody Valentine (Stuff that’s not Loveless)
I finally got around to listening to more than one of my all time favorite albums Loveless and other than the early overly-gothy EP or two they made some damn good music.
    Minutemen
Great, inventive punk. It's always nice to see bands experimenting and changing styles.
    Miles Davis
I finally had enough distance from my days in jazz band to actually appreciate jazz.
    The Stooges
Recently I got around to actually giving Funhouse and Raw Power good listens and they definitely live up to the hype. It's sad to see how burnt out he is now though (see video of him at Madona's birthday [Side note: evidently Mike Watt is in this video too. I hope for his sake he was either there for the novelty or because he's friends with Iggy Pop]).
    Can
Amazing rhythm section and sexellent jams. I may not really understand krautrock as a genre but I know that I love this band.
    Out Hud
Awesome, inventive electronic music. S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D. is amazing.

Also, why are MGMT popular? They're really just so boring. I just don't get it.

Big ups to anyone and everyone who's given me recommendations throughout the year. They, as well as all ya'lls comments and conversation, are always appreciated. Thanks!

    Dez 1 2007, 3h09 por thisisahiijack

Hello. In this series of journal entries, you will find an extensive list of every music folder I have on my computer from a Kansas City/Lawrence area band. A large amount of them I have personally ripped myself from compact disc or vinyl. Others, I may have ripped straight from MySpace with a handy little device you can search for on the interweb. The remaining ones I found on the wonderful file-sharing program Soulseek, which I'm sure if you are reading this you are at least familiar with.

The bands that have their folder listed as 'various' means it is either non-album/compilation tracks, or various songs I downloaded from their MySpace. Lastly, not to be a horn-tooter, but I believe this might be one of the most complete digital collections of music from the area. I pride myself on being a bit of a completist, and again if you have something I do not get in touch!

I will update this from time to time, as I have new albums added, or as newer artists become taggable.

  • Top 12 (roughly) of 2006

    Dez 26 2006, 21h59 por VMWhelan

Well it's that time of year that everyone pumps out these lists. This years list was hard... not because there was so much, but because I almost left it as a top 9. It's not that this was a shitty year for music, its because last year was such a good year, that i'm still discovering CDs from 2005 and listening to them. Maybe 2007 will be a good year for 2006.

So here's the list, and it's subject to change within a few months. I'm not even sure if this is the right order now, and I suck at mini reviews.

EDIT: Changing the order a little, added an album and added an honorable mention.

    01. Sunset Rubdown - Shut Up, I am Dreaming
I don't know if this is number 1 because its the best or because I decided it in the summer. I listened to this album a shitload of times toward the middle of the year, and I enjoyed every second of it. I recently went back to it this month and I still loved every minute of it. This album blows Wolf Parade out of the water. Maybe Wolf Parade will be the side project soon.

    02. Black Bear - The Cinnamon Phase
This random download (that I eventually bought) was such a pleasant surprise. I love this one man band: I love the synths and I love the beats. Every song on this album is great, from songs about Flying Deloreons to a whistling Mothers' Day tune. The final song even inspired one of my own, though not as good. This album was my summer album, even more than Sunset Rubdown.

    03. Peter and the Wolf - Lightness
I just began listening to this last month, and I wish I would've jumped on this band when I heard a song last year. This is every lo-fi lover's dream album. It's near perfection.

    04. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Etiquette
Formerly using just a casio, Owen makes some beautiful, simple music. This album contains more than his previous work, but is just as good. My friend Sam loves this album, therefore I listened to this album, therefore I fell in love with this album. The Parenthetical Girls cover at the end is a lovely addition.

    05. Electric President - Electric President
So you love the Postal Service or the likes? This album fits in well with that sort, though there is a HUGE difference between this and the Postal Service. Theyre on MORR music and if your into Indietronic or indie pop with an electronic twist, then you should love this.

    06. BOAT - Songs That You Might Not Like
If you love indie pop, this album was made for you. This is another album without a track to skip. You won't know it, but you'll have these songs stuck in your head, and you'll sit there thinking "WHAT THE FUCK SONG IS THIS?!" If that happens, go back to this one, there's a good shot it's from this CD.

    07. Talkdemonic - Beat Romantic
Glitchy, electronic yet organic music that'll amaze you. This is the top instrumental album of 2006 for me.

    08. Islands - Return to the Sea
The Unicorns died and left Islands behind. The Unicorns with a more natural, real sound. Considering 2/3 of the Unicorns wrote this album, its kinda obvious that Islands would resemble them. Despite this, Islands is their own band, and there are a lot of differences between the bands. Regardless, if you loved the Unicorns, you should enjoy this album.

    09. Headlights - Kill Them With Kindness
If it's not on BOAT, then it's on here. This a great album to listen to back to back with the BOAT album. Catchy but excellent indie pop that'll keep you coming back.

    10. The Lovely Feathers - Hind Hind Legs
I've heard countless comparisons to the Unicorns, and theyre somewhat justified. This fits in great with BOAT and Headlights, catchy, fun, indie pop. This is a little nuttier than the other 2, kinda like the Unicorns lyrically, with less death involved.

    11. Ef - Give Me Beauty... Or Give Me Death!
Well, there won't be any death involved, cause this album is beautiful. Another great instrumental band, reminescent of Explosions in the Sky, but they're not copycats: there is some originality in these songs. The male/female vox in the second track are beautiful. If you like post-rock, this album will be one of your favorites.

    12. Antarctica Takes It! - The Penguin League
This one was definately worth the $6 that it cost me. Very homemade (CD-R and computer printout) but the music is lovely. The recording matches the case, as it's very lo-fi, but a very good album reminescent of Page France or Sufjan Stevens.

    *EXTRA SPECIAL HONORABLE MENTION*
    Radical Face - Ghost
This is top 5 material, unfortuanely, I've been listening to a leak, and it got pushed back to 07, so it doesn't qualify. This is one of the most beautiful CDs of the past few years. This is the non-electronic project of Ben from Electric President, and believe me, it eclipses that record. Definately will make my 2007 list.

Those are the albums I actually made it all the way through MULTIPLE times. I wasn't gonna put an album on this unless I'd loved the entire thing. My honorable mentions are albums I enjoyed a lot, but didn't listen to enough to put them on this list, or albums from bands I love that I haven't gotten around to yet. Of course, there is no order

Max Richter - Songs from Before
This album is beautiful, unfortunately, I listened to his previous album a lot more this year. Im pretty sure this would've cracked top 10 had I listened to it just a little more.

Man Man - Six Demon Bag
Only got through this all the way once or twice, but heard the first few songs a bunch. I definately need to listen to more of this.

The Mountain Goats - Get Lonely
I love his/their old stuff, haven't gotten around to this one yet.

Page France - Pear and Sister Pinecone
Last year's album was amazing, I haven't really gotten past it yet. Maybe I'll move on to this soon.

    Grizzly Bear - Yellow House
    See Man Man

Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds
I didn't like this at first, but just recently starting listening to it and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I wish I would've tried harder before.

Xiu Xiu - The Air Force
See Final Fantasy, only this happened a little earlier than 2-3 weeks ago, and I have never been able to get into this band at ALL. Believe me, I tried plenty of times in the past couple years.

    Bound Stems - Aprreciation Night
I loved their EP and I listened to this a few time, but not nearly enough.

    Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
I love love love love love Postcards from Italy. I listened to this a few times, and I couldn't really enjoy it because I loved Postcards so much, and I kept going back to it. I need to give this a few more chances.

    Mogwai - Mr. Beast
I love this band, unfortunately, this album doesn't compare. While it's still a good record, it's not great. I'm not comparing to old Mogwai, I'm comparing to the entire genre. Still, there are some gems on this. Definately worth checking out.

    Mono - You Are There
Like Max Richter, I listened to Mono's old material more this year, and I need to hear this one more. From what I have heard, it's beautiful. Most likely one of the better post-rock albums of the year.

    Ratatat - Classics
Good, fun CD, but it can get kinda repetitive. If you like nintendo-like synths, you should enjoy this.

Sunset Rubdown - Sunset Rubdown EP
I love this EP. I didn't include it because it's just a short EP, and they already made #1 album.

Takka Takka - We Feel Safer at Night
Kinda generic, a little boring at times, but this album has a couple really good songs, and the rest are for the most part enjoyable at least.

    The Blow - Paper Television
See Man Man, except, I love her friends. Parentheses is a great song.

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
This has potential to be a great album. Only listened a few times, but LOVE the first song, and the second track is pretty good too. Unfortunately one song in the middle or the song was terrible (the Perfect Crime) and it kinda through me off. I need to go back to this one.

The Most Serene Republic - Phages
See the Mountain Goats, though I do enjoy the title track a bunch.

    The Robot Ate Me
    See the Mountain Goats

The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth
I forgot this was 2006 till just now. Great album, though i haven't touched it in quite a bit.

Michael Zapruder's Rain Of Frogs - New Ways of Letting Go
I listened to this about 5 times, and I enjoyed it a LOT, but for some reason, I didn't get addicted to it. Maybe I'll listen to it more soon. I could see this one on the list.

    My Morning Jacket - Okonokos
Great album from a great band. It's live, so there's not much new, so I didn't put it on. Despite that, I enjoy it quite a bit.

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton - Knives Don't Have Your Back
So I kinda forgot about this CD. I listened to it when it first came out, and I thought it was good. I'm a fan of Metric, especially after seeing them headline the Islands show in the beginning of the year. I really haven't listened to this one enough to add it either.

That's it for now, hope if you bothered to read it, you enjoyed it or at least respect it.

  • Bears!

    Ago 16 2006, 15h36 por fionapinkstars

I seem to be listening to a lot of music by bands with Bear-related names at the moment. So much so that I'm considering having a week of Bear-only music.

    So far we've covered;
    Black Bear
    Grizzly Bear
    My beloved polar bear
    Volcano the Bear

    Next on the list;
    Panda Bear
    Huggy Bear
    Bearsuit

    Anymore suggestions? Go!
