  • November Mixtape: Farfaille

    Dez 1 2008, 8h21 por laura_mac

Farfaille = "for fall," get it? In some parts of the world, November means scarves and mittens and 18 inches of snow, but here in Tennessee I'm still walking to class in a t-shirt and light jacket through piles of orange maple leaves. So, in the spirit of the dog days of fall, here are some songs for the season.

As always, click on the album art to download. Criticism, constructive or otherwise, as well as abject praise is always welcome.

  • CDs for Erin Epley (2008), pt. 2

    Ago 20 2008, 23h23 por gradmusicfan

CD # 2: Even Cowgirls Get the Blues

That is an Emmylou Harris record that isn't even represented on this list. Why? Because I laugh in the face of your rules! Ha!

    Anyhow...

    1. "Long Monday," John Prine

Prine is seriously underrated. I'd call him the poor man's Dylan but that would be unfair to both of them.

As a sidenote, as I notice that more and more of my lists are populated with songs Jillian Wormington exposed me to, I think I have to say that she was my favorite girlfriend ever. That probably speaks more to my own incalculable selfishness than anything else.

    2. "Howlin' at the Wolf," Hank Williams

If you can get over your pretensions and allow yourself to get into serious country music and thus open yourself up to the Hank Williams experience you will be a better person and 2 or 3 steps closer to God.

    3. "Can't Let Go," Lucinda Williams

    4. "Look at Miss Ohio," Gillian Welch

Public Radio International-- Look at Miss Ohio

    5. "I'm Alive," Shelby Lynne

I am completely obsessed with Lynne's 2003 album Identity Crisis and this is my favorite song off that disc. It might just be my favorite song ever. The understated but superbly executed Hammond Organ and steel guitar fills (I think I am right about the instruments but who knows) push it over the top for me.

I could (and have) stared at that picture for hours.

    6. "Condi, Condi," Steve Earle

A country reggae tune about having the hots for Condoleeza Rice should not be good. But this is pretty wonderful.

    7. "Two More Bottles of Wine," Emmylou Harris

    8. "Sin Wagon," Dixie Chicks

    9. "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," Billy Bragg & Wilco

For those that don't know, this is from a project wherein Bragg & Wilco recorded songs from lyrics left behind by Woody Guthrie.

    10. "Shotgun Willie," Willie Nelson

    11. "A Little Blues," The Be Good Tanyas

Frazey Ford's lead vocals are simply amazing. You must do yourself a favor and check this band out--even if Americana is not your thing.

    12. "Little Boy Blue," Will Oldham

    aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy

    13. "Wagon Wheel," Old Crow Medicine Show

    14. "The Race is On," George Jones

    15. "Little Boxes," Malvina Reynolds

This song is most famous nowadays for being the original theme song for the Showtime series Weeds.

    16. "Return of the Grievous Angel," Gram Parsons

Won't you scratch my itch, sweet Annie Rich?

    17. "Fist City," Loretta Lynn

Far from a mere song about a cat fight, this is an invitation to a flat ass beat down. Stay away from Loretta's man!

    18. "In Spite of Ourselves" John Prine & Iris DeMent

    19. "All I Want Is You," The Moldy Peaches

You know this from the opening of Juno.

    20. "Big Red Balloon," Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra

    21. "Come Pick Me Up," Ryan Adams

I used to think this guy was a bit of a joke. However, I have took the time to listen to his music and it is quite good. This is probably my favorite.

    22. "I Am Weary, Let Me Rest" The Cox Family

This is on the O Brother Where Art Thou? sountrack

    23. "One More Cup of Coffee," Bob Dylan

    24. "Let Him Fly," Patty Griffin

The Dixie Chicks do a cover of this song.

  • All You Gotta Do Is Touch Me.

    Jul 25 2008, 6h11 por jakeandlola

Jonatha Brooke is one of my favorite artists of all time. Despite not being very well known, she has a very loyal fan base, especially here in the US and in parts of Europe (read: Denmark!) So I wanted to give you a little insight into this amazingly talented artist who needs our support (read: buy her albums!) She's got a new record coming out on August 26, with lyrics borrowed from the library of Woody Guthrie. Yes, THAT Woody Guthrie, the folk legend. Now, she's not the first artist to re-interpret Guthrie's lyrics. Billy Bragg & Wilco put out an album in '98 called Mermaid Avenue, the lyrics of which were also taken from the Guthrie archives. Jonatha has made these lyrics her own, thus making Guthrie accessible to folk traditionalists and modern music lovers alike.
Some of Jonatha Brooke's Similar Artists from last.fm:
Shawn Colvin, Dar Williams, Patty Griffin, Patty Larkin, Natalie Merchant, Erin McKeown, Lisa Loeb, Paula Cole, Brandi Carlile, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Osborne, Heather Nova
I fell in love with Jonatha in 1995 when a friend introduced me to Plumb, her first solo record. The first track on the album, TocarNothing Sacred, is a blistering look at the end of a relationship:
To be true, to be kind, to never walk away
And it's true you were blind no matter what I would say to you
Is there nothing sacred, to you?
The heartache on the album is palpable. Now that I think about it, a lot of the songs on Plumb are about break-ups. And who hasn't gone through one of those? It's feminism, but only in the sense that she is a strong woman who won't take anything lying down. It's empowering music, but more than that, it's beautiful. (Check out the track TocarInconsolable if you want a good cry). Jonatha's mastery of the guitar does not go unnoticed; her harmonies are unique to her sound and again show a technical skill that any folk-rock artist would find hard to match.

My Top 10 Fave JBro tracks to check out:
    TocarMade of Gold (Plumb)
    TocarWest Point (Plumb)
Because I Told You So (10 Cent Wings)
Landmine (10 Cent Wings, and the version from Live in New York is amazing)
    TocarAnnie (Live)
    Linger (Steady Pull)
Eye in the Sky (Back in the Circus, Alan Parsons Project cover)
It Matters Now (Back in the Circus)
Hearsay (Careful What You Wish For)
After The Tears (Careful What You Wish For)
Her subsequent studio albums, 10 Cent Wings (1997), Steady Pull (1999), Back in the Circus (2004), and Careful What You Wish For (2007), show a progression from a folk siren to a rock goddess -- with occasional glances back at the spare, soulful harmonies at which she excels. For those of us who love Jonatha's sound, her new album (which I've attached the video promo for below) sounds like it's gonna be pure Jonatha. She's collaborated with some awesome artists like Keb' Mo', Joe Sample and Glen Phillips, lead singer of Toad the Wet Sprocket. What I've heard so far sounds awesome (the first track, called All you gotta do is touch me, is available streaming on JBro's MySpace (link below).

Me and Jonatha last year in Chicago.

I got to see Jonatha three times last year, in Chicago, Ann Arbor, and right here in Portland. She is incredible live, whether she plays solo or with her kick-ass band. (Hello, Goffrey Moore on guitar? ROCKS.) Jonatha always makes herself available after shows to chit-chat with fans and autograph CDs, and for ubergeeks like me, be photographed with rabid fans. And she is embarking on a cross-country tour in the fall, so the likelihood is if you are in the US, she's coming close to you. (She's also got a couple of dates in the UK in October, and doubtless she'll have some sort of 8-week tour of every single town in Denmark. Those Danes are CRAZY about Jonatha.) I strongly encourage you to check out all of her albums, but especially The Works when it comes out on August 26. I hope you will fall in love with her the way that I have, and that you will count yourself among her fans.

  • Lb4Lb#5: But We're Okay, We're Fine

    Jul 16 2008, 3h33 por tadmaster

    I wanna clear my head,
    I wanna drink that sun,
I'm gonna love you good and strong
While our love is good and young.
    - TocarGet Out the Map

Normally, this "lb4lb" thing is about an album (or two) that particularly moved me in some way. Nothing is as frustrating as buying an entire CD that only has one or two tracks that you really like on it; and few things are as satisfying as finding a collection of songs that flow together and keep you coming back for the whole set.

But THIS time, I want to talk about a "lb4lb" career.

The best thing you've ever done for me
Is to help me take my life less seriously
    It's only life, after all.
    - TocarCloser to Fine

Folk music doesn't get paid the respect it deserves, partly because folk fans pay it FAR too much respect. It's an art form based on intimacy, and the fandom associated with other genres simply spoils the effect.

Nothing kills the joy of listening to Peter Paul and Mary like hearing someone blather on about the symbolism of Puff The Magic Dragon. (I know it's a work of subtle genius, man, you don't need to explain why!) Nothing makes a noble Woody Guthrie protest song more boring than hearing about how noble and historic it is.

(That's not to say covering folk isn't a great idea. Billy Bragg and Wilco paid a fine tribute to Woody with Mermaid Avenue and Mermaid Avenue Vol. 2; and Bruce Springsteen did Pete Seeger proud with We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions.)

Folk is at its best when it is left alone; a troubadour with an instrument. A guitar, three chords, and the Truth. And a little bit of history.

All the shiny little trinkets of temptation
    (make new friends)
Something new instead of something old
    (but keep the old)
All you gotta do is scratch beneath the surface
    (but remember what is gold)
    And it's fools gold
    - TocarPower Of Two

They've played with Michael Stipe of R.E.M. They toured with The B-52's bassist, Sara Lee. Stephen King set part of a novel around one of their concerts. They sell out tours around the world.

But, there is no reason on earth why the Indigo Girls should be so damned popular. They don't get airplay. They aren't "pretty". Their songs are arguably "all the same" (unless you're actually listening to them). If you're looking at surfaces, theirs is dusty, and someone has written, "Best Buy is that way" in the dust to help move you on.

Scratch beneath that surface, though... you see denim. You feel the calluses on your fingertips. You might smell some weed smoke. But you'll hear those voices. You'll look up to see two women with guitars, and you will swear they are angels giving you something that will change your life.

My friend tanner she says you know
Me and jesus were of the same heart
The only thing that keeps us distant
Is that I keep fuckin up
    - TocarShame On You

I don't really know many facts about Amy Ray and Emily Saliers; I heard they were Christians, I heard they were lesbians. I heard they used to be a couple, and I heard...

    I heard the music.

That's all that matters, in the end. There is nothing I can say as a fan that will matter, or make a difference to you. But if you listen to that music, those words.

It took a long time to
become the thing I am to you.
And you won't tear it apart
without a fight, without a heart.
    - TocarBecome You

They are tough, honest, beautiful. You won't care about every song on every album; at least, not at first. But they will speak to you, and you will feel something; and it will be like the realization that part of you was asleep. Something you didn't know was hurting will be soothed.

When we get a little distance some things get clearer
Give em the space our hearts grow nearer
I ran as hard as I could and still ended up here
    but it's alright
