Maghrebika & Bill Laswell «Neftakhir» (p) 2006

Переходим, пожалуй, к главному диску сегодняшнего выпуска, великолепному альбому, который записали североафриканские музыканты вместе с Bill Laswell. Величайший бас-гитарист современности, человек не признающий музыкальных рамок и границ, всегда настроенный на создание новых форм, звуков и сторонник тотальной гибридизации в очередной раз записал альбом экстра-класса. Несмотря на то что, главной любовью Ласвелла был и остается dub — не уверен, существуют ли стили и движения, где бы он не приложил свою руку. Как музыкант и продюсер он работал почти со всеми знаковыми артистами: John Zorn, Herbie Hancock, Lori Anderson, Piter Gabriel, Swans, Scorn, Iggy Pop — вот лишь малая часть золотого списка Билла. Альбом «Neftakhir» выпущен лейблом Barbarity. Сам проект называется Maghrebika. Марокканские музыканты, франкоговорящие хип-хоперы, двое алжирских певцов, североафриканские инструменты, флейты и скрипки, окутанные дабовой дымкой гитары Ласвелла, выдают мощнейший tribal-groove. Помимо несомненных музыкальных достоинств, «Neftakhir» — это ещё и неагрессивный манифест против антимусульманской истерии, усилившейся после событий 11 сентября.

Brought home a fair armload of stuff this weekend. Went over board, wAaaAAaaaAAay over board, and I don't regret it one bit.

Big Black - Songs About Fucking (Vinyl)
When I bought my stereo this album was at the top of my list of things I needed buy on vinyl. The CD has your typical poor vinyl CD transfer thing happening. The sound is simply blunted, claustrophobic and shitty. I took a listen of it tonight but wasn't able to really crank it up the way I wanted to. It still kicked a lot of ass.

Burial - Untrue (Vinyl)
One of my favourite bands at the moment. At the top of the game in the "Dubstep" movement, though I have a difficult time squaring him with dub artists such as Scientist and King Tubby. If this was the 90s he'd be just easily compared to some of the murkier works of Bola and Autechre but you'd probably have to separate him from those two by saying it's more "dubby."

Black Flag - Damaged (Vinyl)
I remember seeing the video for TV Party on Much Music when I was a kid. I wondered if it would be considered a really good Black Flag song because it didn't seem as threatening as punk was made out to be. I still enjoy the odd Henry Rollins rant, but it does have to be the odd one. BTW, it's a great album, but that goes unsaid.



Walter Carlos - Sonic Seasonings
Early electronic/moog music with a lot of ambiance and nature sounds in the mix. A surprisingly good listen that will be spending a lot of time on the record player.

Herbie Hancock - Future Shock (vinyl)
Nice to get a used copy of this on vinyl. Especially the same week I rated Rock It on of the most important songs of the 80s (it was just a comment on a tumblr blog). It's also amazing how much Bill Laswell has touched.



Herbie Mann - Waterbed (Vinyl)
Just one of those cross-over into funkyness albums that a well esteemed artist does to the guffaws of the snobs and the swooning of people like me.


There's a few others out of the Easy Listening section by Percy Faith, Enoch Light, and Richard Hayman (this one is actually quite cool). But, that's enough blathering for one night.

Fri 10 Jul – North Sea Jazz Festival 2009

Yesterday we went to North Sea Jazz, I still stand by all the bitching I normally do about festivals and NSJ in particular, this experience only confirmed my prejudices (based on attending other festivals). Had I paid 83 euro's I would've been disappointed. 83 euros and then ask 50 cents for a program? WTF?!? 30 cents for a leak. € 2.30 for a beer. And then those big halls which to me just don't seem like places to enjoy music. When I came in, 15 minutes late for Bar Kokhba because of some guestlist hassle which luckily were fixed eventually, the room was full they told me with the advice to seek my entertainment elsewhere. Nice. Good thing I saw them twice already.

Anyway, I now know why I ignore these mega-happenings and will continue to do so. Yet, once inside the Yukon tent you can just think you're in a small venue and goddamn, what shows were ahead of us!

The Secret Chiefs 3 show was dedicated to Book Of Angels 2 which is a nice change to the 5 shows I've seen so far. They flew in Jason Schimmel on lead guitar and Wu Fei (zomg, teh cute!) on gu zheng (Chinese version of the Japanese koto) and vocals. The show was a blast! Ches was sitting in front of the band, with his back to us, like a conductor of the band who were in a circle around him. Unrehearsed but that rough edge only added to the spontaneity and fire of the show. Lengthy solo-spots to justify the presence on a jazz festival, all in all an amazing show!

I had a vague idea of checking out half an hour of Erykah Badu inbetween but I didn't do that, rather took in some fresh air and beer instead of succumbing to that silly zapmentality. The next performance was by John Zorn, Milford Graves, Bill Laswell and special guest Bill Frisell to replace Anthony Braxton who normally plays in this lineup. Graves entered the stage doing a weird African dance doing his scat vocals. He moved slowly behind his kit to start doing his great drumming. After a while Laswell entered, gained some weight since spinal meningitis got him down and looked healthier than he did in a while. That went on some more until Zorn entered with some more traditional and lyrical playing before he headed into more violent moods. Frisell is one of those people who can crash into any jam and just destroy. He's been on a mellow tip for some time but I hear he found his distortionpedal again lately. Tonight he provided some wonderful raw textures to the energy waves coming from the other three. They were even allowed an encore even though the tent did get a bit emptier over the course of the show (I guess people who got interested by seeing The Dreamers and Bar Kokhba Sextet were in for a surprise, in spite of all cliché'd 'musical terrorrist' promo blabber being written in the papers. I did catch some annoyed 'is this music?' expression on the faces from people leaving). Again this was a show where the drummer seemed in charge and the result was once again what you rightfully call 'a blast'.

Brazilian filmmaker Bruno Natal is the director of Dub Echoes, a documentary about the history of Jamaican dub music and its influence on contemporary electronic music. Featured musicians include Lee “Scratch” Perry, King Jammy, Sly & Robbie, U-Roy, Kode9, Mad Professor, Howie B, Bill Laswell, LTJ Bukem, Peter Kruder (of Kruder & Dorfmeister), Roots Manuva, Zion Train and many more!

Being that we broadcast this show on Valentine’s day, we have a bit of massacre for you. Not one, but 2 showcases on offer, courtesy of Gunjack and Hellfire Machina.

SHOWCASE no.ONE
Heading up our first of this weeks 2 showcases, we present Gunjack.

Native to Los Angeles, California, Gunjack AKA Brian Gibbs started his first label, Deafmosaic while residing in Tokyo, Japan. Gibbs later moved to Spain and released many techno gems through Jaxx Records, Madrid. Currently Gibbs is in South America. His beats are utter filth, and his production showcase is going to be a relentless listen make no mistake.

SHOWCASE no.TWO
Stepping out from the Big Apple, but originating from London, Hellfire Machina have been turning heads since the projects inception last year. Sonic exploration in the realm of 140 bpm, with an ethos of non conformity, heavy bass and fierce attitude, the Hellfire crew are set to explode. Their productions have already been devastating dancefloors around the world which has led to a biweekly DJ residency in New York, numerous releases penned for the first part of 2009 not to mention a host of remixes that are currently being crafted in their studio ‘Planet Twisted‘.

Hellfire consists of Jody Shires aka Mechabot1 (one half of Sunz of Mecha + Uncouth Youth / label boss of mechanoise / owner of BreaksFM), Tom Williams aka Chosen Substance (founding member of Junglist Movement and Raw Groove), and Michael Deane aka Mikey FX (one half of Cause n FX / part of the team behind Mechanoise)

Lun. 23 juin – Domaine privé John Zorn

Monsieur John Zorn s'installant durant une semaine entière à la cité de la musique, il nous livre chaque jour un aspect différent de ses influences et productions.
Pour ma part ce soir (et premier soir) fut entièrement jazzcore, c'est-à-dire avec les sons des différents instruments poussés jusqu'à saturation, une vision sonore donc torturée et agressive. Avec le saxo de Zorn, mais aussi une batterie, des guitares et la voix (Mike Patton, je me suis déplacée pour lui à la base), l'ensemble parait cacophonique. Je ne perçois pas de ligne mélodique définie, comme si le concert n'était que pure improvisation mais en fait c'est très structuré ce qui rend ce concert plus intéressant à analyser qu'à entendre car chaque instrument est joué de différentes manières.

A la fin, je n'ai pas adhéré du tout au genre Jazzcore lui-même mais je reste assez impressionnée des performances de ce concert au format américain (court : 30min+45min).
Vu que je vénère (un poil) Mike Patton je ne dirai rien contre ses cris et râles douloureux. Le musicien qui s'est fait remarqué, c'est bien Bill Laswell, qui "légèrement" imbibé d'alcool s'est déplacé sur la scène non sans aide (et a buggué une fois ou deux sur des morceaux).
