  • Step Into My Office, Baby: The best albums of the last ten years [part one]

    Nov 29 2009, 17h24 por rtreynor

Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress [2003] What I always liked about the voice of Belle & Sebastian's lead singer, Stuart Murdoch, was that he sounded much like Ray Davies of THE KINKS. And what I like about "Dear Catastophe Waitress" is that it has a subtle precious vibe to it reminicent of the Kinks' "Village Green Preservation Society." -- The songs have a sentimentality and sense of humor that seems very local.
And while songs like "Piazza, New York Catcher" may not be the most timeless of tracks, "If She Wants Me" or "Wrapped Up In Books" certainly are.
It still surprises me that Trevor Horn produced this album. The former lead singer of Yes and the Buggles who produced with bombast throughout the 80s and 90s (Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Seal, Yes), was able to turn it down a notch for the better-than-twee indie hipsters from Glasgow. And while I'm currently kind of tired of their sound - this album did play as soundtrack to much of the last ten years for me.
    Listen, watch "I'm A Cuckoo"

    Goldfrapp - Supernature [2006]
While Madonna's output of the decade mostly disappointed, and Britney's pop ingenuity was mostly overshadowed by her personal life - Goldfrapp delivered. If you're not familiar with Goldfrapp, think Madonna channelling Edith Piaf in a subterranean East Berlin discotheque in the late 70s.
Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory debuted in 2000 with the equally excellent "Felt Mountain" - which has a smoky caberet feel to it. But 2006 saw them crank it up and simplify to create some great grooves and moments of pop brilliance. There's nothing overly complex or thoughtful on this album, but it's laden with timeless sultry hooks that make you think about things to do when the lights turn off.
    Listen, watch:
    - "Number 1"
    - "Ooh La La"

    Laura Veirs - Saltbreakers [2007]
Let me start off this by saying that this really was the decade of Nonesuch records. You could pick any ten records that the label put out this decade and have a compelling list of great music...This is my first Nonesuch on the list, but more is to come.
That said, Seattlite geologist-turned-rocker Laura Veirs blew me away with "Saltbreakers" in 2007.
Laura's guitar playing reminds me of Bill Frisell: A clean sound with long sustains and drones....A lazy rhythm guitar that occasional forget that it's playing the lead. Laura's voice is almost conversational, especially in her enunciations. It has a disarming effect and makes you eager to hear each next confession within the album. There are no sleepers here: from the dreamy "To The Country" to the rollicking sing-along of the title track - each song captures your attention and imagination.
    Listen, watch "Pink Light" -

Stats, part 5: jazz

    Ago 20 2009, 16h15 por -273C

Just another one statistical post. Jazz is our field of research today (top-100 of the tag jazz, to be exact).

    предыдущие посты / previous entries
    mainstream
    russian rock
    progressive rock
    black metal

First of all, our traditional arrangement with respect to number of plays and number of listeners.

    Pic. 1 - full size

    Pic. 2 - full size

In both cases the most popular artist is Amy Winehouse (and, yes, I supposed it would be correct to exclude Tom Waits from jazz stats). Then the things go more classical: Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and so on.

    Pic. 3

And that's the way, general dependence of playcount to number of listeners looks like. You can notice, it's bending upwards with growing number of listeners. So, that means, the leaders of our statistics are treated by listeners in a different way, than other artists.

    Pic. 4 - full size

The graph of specific number of scrobbles (a playcount divided by number of listeners for each artist) confirms that notation. Surprisingly, jazz artists have very low specific scrobble number - 11 in average. Amy Winehouse has the highest one - 32.

    Pic. 5

The histogram just supports concentrating of specific number of scrobbles near very low values, repeating the histogram for other genres in general. Sad, but true. Is jazz dead?

    Pic. 6

Some stats about the user activity in shoutboxes. As one can see, there's no strict dependence of number of shouts to number of listeners. It's obvious, that more popular artists should get more shouts. By the way, Amy Winehouse isn't included here - see the next plot to understand why.

    Pic.7

And here's the dependence of number of shouts in the shoutbox to specific number of scrobbles. Amy Winehouse takes the lead again, having six times more shouts than others. So, she's really anomalous for the jazz. And without Amy, the graph exhibits the property, found in previous research: average specific number of scrobbles behaves like a barrier, separating artists with few shouts from artists with lots of them. Let us see, what another genres would show us the next time)

The total playcount in jazz's top-100 is 348 millions.

Thanks to Hzlqgmnzhh for his script.

  • Less than ideal circumstances, but awesome shows still

    Jul 12 2009, 16h20 por twIXta

Fri 10 Jul – North Sea Jazz Festival 2009

Yesterday we went to North Sea Jazz, I still stand by all the bitching I normally do about festivals and NSJ in particular, this experience only confirmed my prejudices (based on attending other festivals). Had I paid 83 euro's I would've been disappointed. 83 euros and then ask 50 cents for a program? WTF?!? 30 cents for a leak. € 2.30 for a beer. And then those big halls which to me just don't seem like places to enjoy music. When I came in, 15 minutes late for Bar Kokhba because of some guestlist hassle which luckily were fixed eventually, the room was full they told me with the advice to seek my entertainment elsewhere. Nice. Good thing I saw them twice already.

Anyway, I now know why I ignore these mega-happenings and will continue to do so. Yet, once inside the Yukon tent you can just think you're in a small venue and goddamn, what shows were ahead of us!

The Secret Chiefs 3 show was dedicated to Book Of Angels 2 which is a nice change to the 5 shows I've seen so far. They flew in Jason Schimmel on lead guitar and Wu Fei (zomg, teh cute!) on gu zheng (Chinese version of the Japanese koto) and vocals. The show was a blast! Ches was sitting in front of the band, with his back to us, like a conductor of the band who were in a circle around him. Unrehearsed but that rough edge only added to the spontaneity and fire of the show. Lengthy solo-spots to justify the presence on a jazz festival, all in all an amazing show!

I had a vague idea of checking out half an hour of Erykah Badu inbetween but I didn't do that, rather took in some fresh air and beer instead of succumbing to that silly zapmentality. The next performance was by John Zorn, Milford Graves, Bill Laswell and special guest Bill Frisell to replace Anthony Braxton who normally plays in this lineup. Graves entered the stage doing a weird African dance doing his scat vocals. He moved slowly behind his kit to start doing his great drumming. After a while Laswell entered, gained some weight since spinal meningitis got him down and looked healthier than he did in a while. That went on some more until Zorn entered with some more traditional and lyrical playing before he headed into more violent moods. Frisell is one of those people who can crash into any jam and just destroy. He's been on a mellow tip for some time but I hear he found his distortionpedal again lately. Tonight he provided some wonderful raw textures to the energy waves coming from the other three. They were even allowed an encore even though the tent did get a bit emptier over the course of the show (I guess people who got interested by seeing The Dreamers and Bar Kokhba Sextet were in for a surprise, in spite of all cliché'd 'musical terrorrist' promo blabber being written in the papers. I did catch some annoyed 'is this music?' expression on the faces from people leaving). Again this was a show where the drummer seemed in charge and the result was once again what you rightfully call 'a blast'.

  • ECM :rarum Series of Selected Recordings

    Fev 17 2009, 23h01 por colmenares

ecm stands for edition of contemporary music, and it's a label based out of munich, germany. their back catalogue spans as far back as 1969 with the release of free at last by pianist Mal Waldron, and even though it's mostly known for releasing jazz recordings, it has also released music from the likes of Steve Reich or Philip Glass. on this post we will focus on their rather interesting series called: :rarum, selected recordings.

the series is focused on allowing the featured artist to create a selection of their own recordings, either as a frontman or sideman. this is done solely to emphasize the input of the artist rather than that of label excecs, and in turn create a more introspective selection of tunes. as an additive, the label has remastered all the tracks to 24 bit. if that wasn't enough, the inserts include rare photography, as well as extended biographies and artist notes.

up to date there are 20 editions of the series, all of which are offered through the ecm shop

here's a list of what's out there so far:

    :rarum I Keith Jarrett
    :rarum II Jan Garbarek
    :rarum III Chick Corea
    :rarum IV Gary Burton
    :rarum V Bill Frisell
:rarum VI Art Ensemble of Chicago
    :rarum VII Terje Rypdal
    :rarum VIII Bobo Stenson
    :rarum IX Pat Metheny
    :rarum X Dave Holland
    :rarum XI Egberto Gismonti
    :rarum XII Jack DeJohnette
    :rarum XIII John Surman
    :rarum XIV John Abercrombie
    :rarum XV Carla Bley
    :rarum XVI Paul Motian
    :rarum XVII Tomasz Stanko
    :rarum XVIII Eberhard Weber
    :rarum XIX Arild Andersen
    :rarum XX Jon Christensen

we certainly hope ecm doesn't stop there!!
