  • CMU Social Dec - Rose Elinor Dougall (ex-Pipettes) & City Reverb

    Nov 19 2008, 12h44 por cmumusicnetwork

UnLimited Media in association with Leyline Promotions present

    CMU SOCIAL

Episode Eight: Rose Elinor Dougall, City Reverb + CMU:DJs
Plus the infamous CMU Pop Quiz – do you know your pop?
229, Great Portland Street, London, Tuesday 9th December 2008
    Entry £5 / Doors 7pm-11pm

    THE BASICS:
    - The CMU Social is the monthly networking and showcase night for readers of the CMU Daily, the UK music business’ biggest and most popular daily news service.
    - On Tuesday 9 Dec the eighth episode of the CMU Social will feature performances from two of CMU’s favourite new artists of the moment, Rose Elinor Dougall and City Reverb.
As well as the music, the CMU Social is a real opportunity for music business people to meet, network and generally socialise – or prove their pop trivia knowledge with the CMU Pop Quiz (past winners include Sunday Best, something in construction and Olswangs/Glastonbury).
    - On top of that, there’s a happy hour and well-priced food available from 7pm to 8pm
    - Entry is just £5 on the door

    CMU ON THE SOCIAL:
CMU launched its monthly Social in April, and since then a whole host of great acts have taken to our stage, including Infadels, A.Human, Maths Class, Tim Ten Yen, Post War Years, Vessels, The Deer Tracks, Model Horror, Sportsday Megaphone, RestLessList, Big Strides, Matt Finucane and The Penny Black Remedy. With the best audience and greatest atmosphere we’ve ever experienced at an industry showcase (and we’ve been to many), the night also features the increasingly infamous CMU Pop Quiz plus the finest mix of tunes from the CMU:DJs.

    CMU ON ROSE ELINOR DOUGALL:
CMU’s favourite Pipette (and now ex-Pipette) will be joining us to show off some of her rather fine new solo material, including her fantastic debut single, 'another version of pop song', which is due for release on 8 Dec, and says everything you need to know in its title. Stepping away from the retro, neo-girl group sound of The Pipettes, Rose’s new material sees her creating a clean slate for herself with the only link to the past being her rich, familiar voice. Do not miss this.

    CMU ON CITY REVERB:
Featuring former Radio 1 DJ Chris Coco amongst their number, City Reverb release their debut album, ‘Lost City Folk’, on 2 Feb, which delivers a mix of electronic and live band elements to create a unique and beautifully atmospheric sound that Chris describes as “robot soul”. Their eclectic clash of influences creates a mellow, yet uplifting sound that will provide the perfect opening to our winter festivities.

o The CMU Social is the monthly networking and showcase night for readers of the CMU Daily, the UK music business’ biggest and most popular daily news service.
o On Tuesday 14 Oct the sixth episode of the CMU Social will feature performances from two of CMU’s favourite new artists of the moment, Post War Years, who ended a successful tour with White Lies with a sold out show at the ICA, and Gillan Edgar, a great new artist from Manchester who recently supported Pete Doherty.
o As well as the music, the CMU Social is a real opportunity for music business people to meet, network and generally socialise – or prove their pop trivia knowledge with the CMU Pop Quiz (past winners include Sunday Best, Something In Construction and Olswangs/Glastonbury).

o Entry is free to CMU Daily readers, who just need to email the names of themselves and their guests to social@cmumusicnetwork.co.uk. Tickets will also be available on the door for £5.

    CMU ON THE SOCIAL:
For nearly ten years CMU has been reporting on and writing about and bigging up all kinds of great new music. Among the artists to get some of their earliest coverage in CMU over the years include Stereophonics, Eminem, Snow Patrol, Dandy Warhols, Delays, The Streets, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, McFly, Kasabian, The Killers and Arctic Monkeys to mention just a few. To mark its tenth year, CMU launched its own monthly night meaning we can now not only talk about but also showcase the new bands we’re most exciting about – and just three months in we’ve had some storming sets from bands and artists like Infadels, A.Human, Maths Class, Vessels, The Deer Tracks, Sportsday Megaphone, RestLessList, Big Strides and The Penny Black Remedy. And this month, we’ll add two more brilliant bands to that list.

    CMU ON POST WAR YEARS:
Post War Years have been causing quite a stir this year, thanks to shows with the likes of MGMT, Tom Vek and Does It Offend You, Yeah? They have also just completed a UK tour with White Lies, which ended with a sold out show at the ICA. Their single, The Black Morning, received airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6music and Xfm earlier this year, as well as picking up glowing reviews from the likes of The Times, Fader and Artrocker. Their live performances are whirlwind of racing synths, samplers, and vocal harmonies and band members switching instruments and their sound sits somewhere between Joy Division and Talking Heads. We can’t wait.

    CMU ON GILLAN EDGAR:
Hailing from Manchester, Gillan is getting noticed in all the right places at the moment, including the CMU office, where it was quickly decided that he’s exactly the kind of guy we want playing for us. His music recalls The Beatles, Ryan Adams and Elliott Smith with great lyrics and hooks so large they probably shouldn’t be allowed. He recently supported Pete Doherty in London, where he went down a storm, and we expect the same when he plays for us.

    CMU ON JOSH WELLER:
Josh Weller has been a firm favourite at CMU ever since we stumbled across him by mistake at The Secret Garden Party a few years ago. His catchy tunes, great lyrics, eclectic tastes and amiable personality make him instantly likeable. Comparisons have been drawn to Elvis Costello and Randy Newman, which should give you some idea of the songwriting pedigree we're dealing with here. He takes time out from new recording sessions to be with us, and with only moments to catch his breath after returning from Bestival.

    CMU ON THE DEER TRACKS:
Our first international CMU Social band, The Deer Tracks join us all the way from Sweden to showcase their recently-released debut album, 'Aurora'. The album is a mix of epic electronica and glacial cool, with an emotional resonance not normally association with such a sound. The album has been spinning in the CMU office so much that we're slightly worried that the laser might burn through the CD. So, we’re delighted to be able to see them in the flesh.

    CMU ON MATHS CLASS:
Maths Class are attracting an ever-growing fanbase, thanks partly to support from the likes of Steve Lamaq, NME, Artrocker and Vice - and CMU, of course - but mainly because they have a stack of great punked-up indie songs and a reputation for highly-charged live shows that leave audiences stunned and sweaty, which is exactly why we asked them to come and play for us. The band release their new EP, 'Now This Will Take Two Hands' on 21 Jul.

    CMU ON VESSELS
Hailing from Leeds, Vessels have been rocking the CMU office ever since we discovered them last year. The band recently recorded their debut album (out 11 Aug) with Explosions in the Sky producer John Congleton, in the same studio that Nirvana's 'In Utero' and PJ Harvey's 'Rid of Me' were recorded. The epic mix of rock and electronica contained within 'White Fields And Open Devices' truly come alive when performed live. This band are simply jaw-dropping.

    Abr 25 2008, 17h40 por cmumusicnetwork

    CMU Social Episode Two:
A.Human + The Penny Black Remedy LIVE
    + CMU:DJs
plus the first ever CMU Social Pop Quiz - do you know your pop?
229, Great Portland Street, London, Tuesday 1 April 2008, 7pm-11pm

Entry is free to CMU Daily readers, just click here for more details.

    THE BASICS:

    1. The CMU Social is the new monthly night for readers of the CMU Daily, the UK music business’ biggest and most popular daily news service.
    2. It launched in April 2008 to huge success, with CMU readers from across the music industry amassing on 229 in London to enjoy exclusive sets from CMU favourites Sportsday Megaphone and Big Strides.
    3. On Tuesday 6 May the second episode of the CMU Social will be even bigger and better, with a headline set from one of CMU’s favourite new bands of the moment, Wall Of Sound’s A.Human, who will be celebrating the 5 May release of their debut album ‘Third Hand Prophecy’.
    4. As well as the music, the CMU Social is a real opportunity for music business people to meet, network and generally socialise – or prove their worth with the all new CMU Social Pop Quiz, with prizes to be won between 7 and 8pm.
    5. Entry is free to CMU Daily readers, who just need to email the names of themselves and their guests to social@cmumusicnetwork.co.uk. Tickets will also be available on the door for £5.

    CMU ON THE SOCIAL:
For nearly ten years CMU have been reporting on and writing about and bigging up all kinds of great new music. But up until now we’ve not had the forum to actually showcase the new bands we’re raving about. Up until now. With CMU’s tenth birthday just round the corner, we have extended our partnership with Leyline Promotions to do just that, with the CMU Social, a new monthly night for music people on the inside, providing a place to meet, greet, chat, cheer, network and socialise while enjoying sets from Team CMU’s favourite bands.

    CMU ON A.Human:
Now, this is a band we rate very very highly. And you might say "but CMU, you highly rate everything signed to Mark Jones' Wall Of Sound label", and while that is a not entirely false statement (he just keeps signing loads of our favourite artists), we are especially excited about these WoS signings. In fact, we've been excited about A.Human ever since we first stumbled across them last year, and have been getting increasingly excitable since we saw the release of their debut album 'Third Hand Prophecy' arrive on the release schedule for 5 May. Someone called these guys' music 'shock n roll', which isn't a term I'd normally condone, but in this case I'll let it pass. If you like things synthy and bassy and a little bit mad, then this is an album to track down, and this is a CMU Social set you just have to see.

  • Big Strides - Always Together

    Fev 25 2007, 13h16 por ChrisChinchilla

Out February 26th on Tall Order
Despite my suspicions that Big Strides may have a lot of money behind them (headlining the Electric Ballroom already?) this is a brilliant single. Each track has a different style from bluesy-funk to mellow Ballad, un yet still possessing a similar feel and sound, all superbly captured and recorded. Three boys to watch out for.
