  • 2009!

    Jan 2 2010, 0h47 por caro_g

    2009.

    - recitales.

    3. Matt & Kim + No Age - La Trastienda [07.06.2009]

    10. The Kooks - La Trastienda 17.06.2009]

    · favoritos:

    (en orden alfabetico)

A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head

Bad Lieutenant - Never Cry Another Tear

Big Star - Keep An Eye On the Sky

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Live

Brendan Benson - My Old, Familiar Friend

British Sea Power - Man Of Aran

Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career

Euros Childs - Son Of Euro Childs

    Gomez - A New Tide

    I Was A King - I was a King

Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers

Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs - Under The Covers Vol. 2

My Sad Captains - here and elsewhere

Sky Larkin - The Golden Spike

    Slow Club - Yeah So

    The Besties - Home Free

The Boy Least Likely To - The Law of the Playground

    The Disciplines - Smoking Kills

The Legends - Over and over

The Morning After Girls - Alone

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Throw Me the Statue - Creaturesque

Travis - An Evening With Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop

    1. How did you get into 29? (M83)
I remember being intrigued by the title and album cover of Saturdays = Youth back in 2008, so naturally I pursued the album. It ended up being one of my favourites of the year, and then I fell in love with the gorgeousness that is TocarRun Into Flowers and eventually the rest of the album after I got Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 23?(The Antlers)
Another album I got on a whim (knowing nothing at all about the music it would contain) due to the intriguing cover art. So that'd be the first song on Hospice, TocarPrologue.

    3. What’s your favourite lyric by 22?(Why?)
One of the things I like best about WHY? are the hilariously self-conscious lyrics. My favourite though, would have to be "Even though I haven't seen you in years, yours is a funeral I'd fly to from anywhere" from TocarThese Few Presidents

    4. What is your favourite album by 49?
    There is no 49 :(

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
    See above :'(

    6. What is your favourite song by 50? (Black Tambourine and Lou Reed)
Black Tambourine - Definitely For Ex-Lovers Only
Lou Reed - Probably TocarPerfect Day or TocarSatellite Of Love

    7. Is there a song by 40 that makes you sad? (The Go-Betweens)
You're probably in all likelihood a robot if Quiet Heart doesn't tug at your (quiet?) heart strings just a bit.

    8. What is your favourite album by 9? (Radiohead)
OK Computer. Nothing can be said about this album that hasn't already. Though I was Team-Kid A for a good while.

    9. What is your favourite song by 21? (Ramones)
Has to be Judy Is a Punk . Tons of great songs, though.

    10. Is there a song by 5 that makes you happy?
Ha! Happiness isn't really what Conor's known for, but a lot of the songs make me happy anyway just for being some of my favourite music. Bowl of Oranges and Nothing Gets Crossed Out in their happy-sad way in particular, I guess.

    11. What is your favourite album by 11? (Rocketship)
The only album I've heard from them (and apparently the only one really worth the time and effort) is A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness. But I love that album to bits.

    12. What is your favourite song by 10?(Neutral Milk Hotel)
The title track off In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. One of my favourite songs of ALL TIME. But I'd cheat if I could and just say the entire album is my favourite song.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 2? (The Replacements)
Last summer, driving home from my cottage at night, with the window down and listening to Within Your Reach. I don't even know why exactly, but I just remember feeling really happy in that moment.

    14. What is your favourite song by 38? (Panda Bear)
Probably TocarPonytail. Adore TocarComfy in Nautica and TocarBros as well, though.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (The National)
Apartment Story. Something about the drums and the lyrics "We'll stay inside till somebody finds us, do whatever the TV tells us, stay inside our rosy-minded fuzz"

    16. How many times have you seen 24 live? (Elliott Smith)
...none. And all things considered, it's extremely unlikely (if not downright impossible) I ever will :(

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 27? (Grandaddy)
TocarA.M. 180 in the movie 28 Days Later. One of the catchiest songs evaaaaar. Fuck, it's in my head now.

    18. What is your favourite album by 7?(The Velvet Underground)
The self-titled. I gravitate towards folksy reflective music a lot of the time.

    19. Who is a favourite member of 1? (Animal Collective)
It'd have to be Noah Lennox A.K.A. Panda Bear. One of my favourite song-writers ever.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? (The Wrens)
No, but I'd love to. I hear they're fantastic.

    21. What is a good memory involving 31? (Bob Dylan and Okkervil River)
Bob Dylan: When I was 10 or 11 I had to do some project for school on analysing a song and my dad (since he's always been a big Dylan fan) helped me do Blowin' In The Wind. I ended up getting an A+ of course, haha.

Okkervil River: Sounds tooooootally cheesy, but I remember sitting on a dock, watching the sunset and listening to Black Sheep Boy being a very enjoyable experience.

    22. What is your favourite song by 16?(The Unicorns)
I Don't Wanna Die. Airplane noise at 0:37 and lyric "We don't want to die in our sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep(ing bags)" = genius. Child Star is a very close second, though.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? (The Field Mice, Phoenix, and Wolf Parade)
The Field Mice - Five Moments
    Phoenix - TocarLisztomania
Wolf Parade -TocarI'll Believe in Anything

    24. What is your favourite album by 3? (Pavement)
Slanted & Enchanted. I love several of their other albums nearly as much, though.

    25. What is your favourite song by 25? (The Flaming Lips)
    Superhumans

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (Los Campesinos!)
TocarMy Year In Lists. It wasn't until months later that I realised stationary does indeed make me horny, though.

    27. What is your favourite album by 19?
    DOES NOT EXIST.

    28. What is you favourite song by 18? (The Hold Steady and The Notwist)
The Hold Steady - TocarStuck Between Stations
The Notwist - TocarConsequence (which I am of the firm belief is one of the most perfect songs I've ever heard)

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
    NO 32.

    30. What is you favourite song by 8?(The Books)
TocarThere Is No There. Fascinates me in a way few other songs can every time I hear it.

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Guided by Voices)
    None :|

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Since 44 doesn't exist, no, there isn't. Nonexistence is bleak.

    33. What is you favourite album by 4? (The Microphones)
The Glow, Pt. 2. I love this album more than I love you. I'm sorry.

    34. What is the worst song by 45?(Casiotone for the Painfully Alone)
I dunno. I have to be in a really specific mood to listen to Casiotone.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Silver Jews)
I think it was Smith and Jones Forever. Truth be told, I don't know why Silver Jews are so high up on my charts. I only have American Water, and I think it's just 'k.

    36. What is you favorite album by 48?
    NOTHING

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (The New Pornographers)
Once. It was really fun, of course. The friend I went with knew nothing about the band and thought we were going to be seeing actual porn, though.

    38. What is you favourite song by 36?(Big Star)
It'd have to be TocarThirteen. Just such a lovely song. TocarThe Ballad Of El Goodo and TocarI'm In Love With A Girl are such great pieces of pop perfection as well, though.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?( The Jesus and Mary Chain)
It must have been Just Like Honey at the end of "Lost In Translation", though I didn't remember the song or get Psychocandy until much later.

    40. What is your favourite album by 35?
    SRSLY WTF

    41. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (Galaxie 500)
TocarFourth of July makes me feel alright when you smile.

    42. What is your favourite album by 41? (Tiger Trap)
They only released one album Tiger Trap. What a boring and anticlimatic answer (though the album is extremely lovable)

    43. What is your favourite song by 30? (Aesop Rock)
No Regrets. Such a great narrative.

    44. What is your favourite song by 46?(Built to Spill)
    Right now it's TocarBroken Chairs

    45. What was the first song you heard by 33? (The Decemberists)
I think it was 16 Military Wives. The video makes me giggle.

    46. Is there a song by 20 that makes you happy?(Against Me!)
I always want to sing We Laugh at Danger (and Break All the Rules) really loudly whenever I listen to it.

    47. What is your favourite song by 37? (Conor Oberst)
Cape Canaveral. Some of my favourite lyrics by Conor as well.

    48. Who is a favorite member of 12? (Mount Eerie)
It'd have to be the lovely and talented Phil Elvrum

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43?(The Streets)
I remember seeing Fit But You Know It on TV when I was twelve and thinking "lolwtf @ british guys trying to rap"

    50. What is your favourite song by 39? (Dan Deacon)
What's with all these favourite song questions? Anyway, Snookered, obviously.

If you actually read all of this you must be horribly bored, and therefore you win a hug! <33

  • Big Star - ‘#1 Record’

    Out 11 2009, 14h11 por tomholcroft

Here's a little review I did for my universities newspaper (Bristol) The idea was to pick an influential album that perhaps isn't known by as many people as it should be. I was limited to around 400 words. Enjoy!

    ---

With a name like Big Star, you would think that you were destined for
mainstream success, especially if your lead singer had already sung a
number one hit (Alex Chilton sang ‘The Letter’ as a member of ‘The Box
Tops.’) But Big Star’s claim to fame comes instead from their devoted
and star-studded fan base causing them to be labelled ‘one of the most
mythic and influential cult acts in all of rock & roll.’

Their debut ‘#1 Record’ provides a fitting tribute to the rock bands of the sixties; both the British Invasion groups such as the Beatles
and Kinks, as well as the West-Coast bands such as the Byrds, whilst
maintaining a livelier 70’s sound that continues to appeal to
singer-songwriters from all genres – Elliott Smith, R.E.M, Wilco, Jeff
Buckley and Teenage Fanclub to name but a few.

The album opens with ‘Feel’ a riveting tune combining morbid lyrics
with energetic and uplifting guitar music. Fans of 'That 70's Show,'
may recognise the blistering rock song ‘In The Street’ as being the
shows opening theme tune. Alex Chilton once said that he gets paid $70
for every episode aired and so to him, the programme is 'That $70
Show.' The most famous song on the album, the immensely covered
acoustic ‘Thirteen’ still stands as the ultimate ode to teenage
romance with lines such as “Won’t you let me walk you home from
school,” and “Won’t you tell your Dad ‘get off my back”’ ‘#1 Record’
is filled out in the middle with more unmissable ballads and driving
rock songs with the exception of the unexplainable psychedelic tune
‘The India Song’ by bassist Andy Hummel. Be warned: this song contains
flutes and mentions of ‘bathing a girl in a forest pool.’ The album
ends on an acoustic note, with the last three songs lacking driving
drum parts, only to be replaced with celestial slide guitars, distant
harmonicas and wistful lyrics. A mish-mesh of jangly 70's pop rock,
ballads, heartfelt acoustic songs and the occasional foray into the
avant-garde – the album continues to pleasantly surprise the listener
all the way through to the final track. The bands' influences are so
craftily blended into the music that Big Star have become the defining
'Power-Pop' group - a genre they could be credited with inventing.

For people new to the band who want to hear their elusive yet
influential sound, check out the remasters of the first two albums
released this June and for the more die-hard fan, I would recommend
the ‘Keep an Eye on the Sky’ box-set that came out in September.
