• Yes, another "best albums of 2009" list - JUST WHAT YOU NEED TO READ!!

    Dez 27 2009, 7h38 por CaptainGaylord

I remember most of the top album lists last year started out with music snob crap like "well it was a pretty lousy year for music, but i guess SOME good things came out." 2008 wasn't a goldmine, but come on - a lot of good stuff came out! Granted, the albums by TV on the Radio, Portishead, Cut Copy, Elbow, and the like were all ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE, but some stuff didn't suck! Like that Coldplay album. Boy oh boy, wasn't THAT a gem!

There's no arguing that this year was abundant with great music. In fact, I wanted to just make a list of 20 or 25, but I just couldn't do it. Even 50 was hard for me! Anyway, without further rambling, here is my top albums list for 2009. I must warn you in advance though that it is quite long, and if you really want to sit and read all about what some random guy on the internet thinks about the year in music when it's such a beautiful day outside, well.. it's your life.

    50. Röyksopp - Junior
I was pretty excited when I heard about a new Röyksopp album, but I wasn't expecting this. There's a lot of the smooth downtempo you'd expect, but a lot of it is just so damn bouncy and fun! The opening alone is fantastic, and a lot of people criticize TocarHappy Up Here for trying to be another
TocarEple, but if you're going to do that you may as well go ahead and make fun of how similar the choruses in Muse's last two singles sounded, too.
Favorite tracks: TocarThe Girl And The Robot, TocarThis Must Be It

    49. Caustic - This Is Jizzcore
This is such a furious affair from start to finish. It sounds like it can't decide whether it wants to be pounding industrial, almost danceable dark wave, or psychotic breakcore. Either way, the pummeling beats and clever use of samples make it absolutely hypnotizing.
Favorite tracks: TocarCock Blockin' Beats, TocarPull the Pin

    48. Cold Cave - Love Comes Close
A very aptly named band. Right from the getgo, Love Comes Close gives off this incredibly icy and detached aura with its distorted vocals and dark, fuzzy synths. The gloomy hooks can sound very eighties at times, but they never come across as derivative; hell, if the New Order-covering-Goodbye Horses sounding title track manages to not only avoid it, but still sound damn good, that's quite a good sign.
Favorite tracks: life magazine, Heaven Was Full

    47. Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
Ambivalence Avenue is startlingly inventive. To be honest I was expecting more of a simple, ambient sound on this but what I got was way more intricate and diverse. Some songs are kickback to be sure, but some have a cleverly chopped up, almost folk as idm (got I HATE that title) sound. Very pleasant surprise.
Favorite tracks: Fire Ant,, The Palm Of Your Wave

    46. Faunts - Feel. Love. Thinking. Of.
Basically what indie pop would have sounded like in 1983. Though again, like Cold Cave, impressively able to avoid being completely generic, which these days is WAY too easy to do when you mine the eighties for inspiration.
Favorite tracks: Feel. Love. Thinking. Of., TocarLights Are Always On

    45. Girls - Album
On top of the fact that most of what Pitchfork says is to be taken with a grain of salt, naming your album "Album" isn't going to do much other than make you look either unimaginative or smug. Despite that, this interesting, hook-filled indie/surf rock blend is actually pretty damn good. It's especially good if you're looking for a breakup album you can mope to while bobbing your head.
    Favorite tracks: Hellhole Ratrace, Summertime

    44. Boxcutter - Arecibo Message
Textbook dubstep. Great, chopped up rhythms and great progressions. Complex, disjointed, and very intriguing.
Favorite tracks: TocarSidetrak, TocarFree House Acid

    43. Micachu - Jewellery
I seriously can't wait until the next new music genre comes out; since we're at the end of a decade, I can't help but imagine it's a mere couple of years away. I like indie and eighties revival as much as the next guy, but.. I dunno, I'm ready for something new. Which is why artists like Micachu are so great - they toy with the current sound until it resembles not quite new, but close enough to be completely unique. Very quirky stuff.
    Favorite tracks: TocarVulture, TocarGolden Phone

    42. Real Estate - Real Estate
Again, surfy sounding indie pop recommended by Pitchfork. But again, it's surprisingly on the money. Nice and spacey sounding without getting overly psychedelic, with great melodies to boot.
Favorite tracks: Beach Comber, Pool Swimmers

    41. HEALTH - Get Color
It's very impressive to think that a noise rock band could yield more good ideas than simply "damn, it's so loud! Isn't this great??" but there's so much more here than that. There are really good melodies here and there, but it's the layering and transitions that really sell it.
    Favorite tracks: Die Slow, Death+

    40. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Narrowly beating out Passion Pit for that whole indie dance thing they've each got going. Both bands put out great albums this year, but Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix just has more heart to it.
Favorite tracks: Love Like A Sunset Part II, Armistice

    39. Zoot Woman - Things Are What They Used To Be
What is this, six years after their last album? Well for better and for worse, it doesn't sound like it. They pick up more or less where they left off and their energy is in tact, but they've got a bit more poppiness to their sound, as well as a few great hard hitting dance numbers that would've been out of place on the first two albums.
Favorite tracks: TocarLonely By Your Side, Things Are What They Used To Be

    38. A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head
Maybe not the biggest step forward to follow their debut with, but it's pretty sweet nonetheless. These guys have not only put out some of the loudest shoegaze this side of the early nineties, but harmonies Robert Smith would kill for as well.
Favorite tracks: TocarKeep Slipping Away, TocarSmile When You Smile

    37. Basement Jaxx - Scars
From the Timbaland-sounding opening to the weird flamenco-house end, for as diverse Scars is, it always sounds unified. The production masterfully matches each track's guest vocalist (the album is LOADED with them) with the only real misstep being the uh.. TOTALLY HOT one with Yoko Ono.
    Favorite tracks: Raindrops, Feelings Gone

    36. Priestess - Prior To The Fire
Yeah, it's not released in the U.S. until mid to early 2010, but it was released this year, so fuck it. Basically what Wolfmother would sound like with more personality. I mean I'd like to see them make a dorky ode to Robocop sound as good as Priestess did!
Favorite tracks: Raccoon Eyes, The Gem

    35. Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport
How many ten minute long songs do you know where when upon first listen, after not even two minutes you already know you're not going to be bored? And that's just the opener. Like if a post-rock band tried doing trance or something.. just freakin' awesome.
Favorite tracks: The Lisbon Maru, Phantom limb

    34. Bat for Lashes - Two Suns
Intensely seductive. Seriously. With such lush and dark music backing that soft, breathy voice... I mean if you didn't want to bang her by the time you were halfway through this album, well... well.... well YOU HAVE BAD TASTE!
    Favorite tracks: TocarGlass, TocarPearl's Dream

    33. Boys Noize - Power
After Simian Mobile Disco's good-but-nothing special sophomore effort, I was kinda nervous waiting for the new Boys Noize.. but all concerns were immediately gone. It did exactly what the former failed to do - yeah, to add new layers, but keep that back end strong! And my god, is it strong here. ...and no, I'm not working up to some lame pun about the album's title... I had the POWER to resist! ....oh wait...
    Favorite tracks: TocarJeffer, TocarSweet Light

    32. Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Even at its most aggressive, The Ecstatic never sounds anything but smooth and controlled. Clever beats with an even more clever flow over every single one. What's not to like?
Favorite tracks: TocarPriority, Quiet Dog Bite Hard

    31. Junior Boys - Begone Dull Care
Speaking of smooth... damn. Maybe their last one was slightly better, but they're still sooo good at letting their songs breathe (these eight songs still make Begone Dull Care about as long as any twelve song album) without getting too repetitive. As simple as they can get, they're still nice and chill. And make you want to make out with the nearest attractive person.
Favorite tracks: Bits & Pieces, Hazel

    30. Bear in Heaven - Beast Rest Forth Mouth
Yet another band I would have no idea existed without god damn Pitchfork. I was very very surprised with their unabashedly psychedelic sound, but even more so with how little they limit themselves to the tag, opting rather to take the tag with them as they explore different facets of alternative music. Bears in Heaven. Yeah. YOU LIKE THAT?? BEARS.
Favorite tracks: TocarWholehearted Mess, TocarFake Out

    29. The xx - xx
I fell in love with this album immediately, and not just because the desire to sing "come, my lady, come come my lady" when the intro's drums kicks in makes me giggle. The dark atmosphere is so inviting, and not even because of how catchy the songs are, or how sultry the female (now that I think of it, they both are really) vocals are... it's just so well established, and doesn't even overtake any of the songs. It's got such a sexy sound.. in fact, I wonder how many people are fucking with this on right now...
    Favorite tracks: Crystalised, Basic Space

    28. Dent May - The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele
This looked like it was going to be about the most pretentious piece of crap I'd ever heard, but probably the first thing I noticed when listening to it was just how startlingly genuine it sounds. There's a cute early-They Might Be Giants feel to it at times (namely with the opening) and it never feels postured throughout. Very inventive backing to him and his..... I'm not calling it a magnificent ukulele, but it is pretty sweet.
Favorite tracks: God Loves You, Michael Chang, I'm An Alcoholic

    27. Eminem - Relapse
Dammit! I was doing so well with avoiding any mainstream artists... and I had to go ahead and put fuckin' EMINEM here. In front of twenty-three totally sweet albums, no less! Well it's here, and it's god damn good, easily his best since The Marshall Mathers LP. I would argue that it's got the best opening of the year with the half funny/half disturbing introductory skit, and he seems the most comfortable he's ever been with making fun of himself, ("oh boohoo! I HAVE A DRUG PROBLEM") which is a must for someone like him. Brilliant rhymes, great beats, and he just flat out sounds more confident than he has in almost a decade.
    Favorite tracks: TocarMy Mom, TocarUnderground

    26. Atlas Sound - Logos
One of the best examples of the year of psychedelic pop being unexpectedly accessible. It has such a warm, pleasant sound that he even makes an eight minute song seem like a sublime slice of pop that ends too soon. Diz-amn.
    Favorite tracks: TocarAn Orchid, TocarShelia

    25. Dinosaur Jr. - Farm
It was pretty exciting when they came back a few years ago with their original lineup, but who expected that to only be the beginning? Er... re-beginning? They really feel like they haven't missed a beat since 1990, and yet still sound just as relevant nearly twenty years later. Hell, singers who need to learn how to sing with a pained voice but without sounding like a little bitch could benefit the most from Farm! Lo-fi grunge is here ta STAY, yo.
    Favorite tracks: Plans, Over It

    24. Baroness - Blue Record
Bash them as a part of the whole so-called "scene-metal" genre all you want, but there's no denying their raw talent and lack of contrivances. The southern sounding progressive metal sounds great on its own, but when that commanding roar armed with such catchy vocal patterns(yeah, he doesn't even growl! I know, what BULLSHIT) steals the show. And the guitar solos? Forget about it. Game over, man! GAME OVER!
Favorite tracks: TocarJake Leg, TocarThe Gnashing

    23. Moderat - Moderat
Danceable melancholic electronica? Damn straight. For some reason they pull it off so well that the music (and especially the vocals, when Apparat sings) sounds downright penetrating. Hell, even if the whole album didn't sound great, it boasts Rusty Nails, which is easily one of the best songs of the year.
Favorite tracks: Rusty Nails, Out Of Sight

    22. Great Lake Swimmers - Lost Channels
"These guys sound like total wimps! You tellin' me they swim in the Great Lakes?? HAH!" ...okay, nobody ever said that. This band is one of the most consistently gorgeous/heartbreaking active bands that I know of; the rich folk sound is powerful enough, but the gentle, yet pained vocals never fail to get to you. Loves it.
Favorite tracks: TocarEverything Is Moving So Fast, TocarStealing Tomorrow

    21. Pearl Jam - Backspacer
I've always been a Pearl Jam fan; even throughout their hazy little experimentation phase, but I'm really glad that's all over. I was blown away by their self titled, but this is even better. It's such a tight and entertaining rock record, but they haven't lost any of their poignancy either. Can you believe they'll be eligible for induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in another couple of years? Scary...
Favorite tracks: Got Some, The Fixer

    20. Slayer- World Painted Blood
Slayer is another band I've loved for a long long while. I didn't want to admit that after Seasons they'd gotten pretty damn... well, redundant, but I still loved them anyway.. until Christ Illusion came out and I just couldn't take that faceless brutality anymore. So no, I wasn't too excited about this album, but I got it anyway... and my god, I'm glad I did. Finally, a Slayer album with more Jeff Hanneman written tracks!! I mean, not to discredit the writing skills of the man who wrote the poetic line "I'm the one who's gonna rip your fucking face off," (Kerry King), but it's so nice to hear the clever time changes and transitions take over instead of the three or four minutes of them playing as fast as they can. Easily, their best in a long ass while.
Favorite tracks: Beauty Through Order, Psychopathy Red

    19. The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die
Alright, I don't care what anybody says, because I seriously do not get why this album has gotten so much disapproval. It really blends the few good qualities of Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned with their early work, which was basically three consecutive masterpieces. What's even better than the fact that it recalls those albums is that it's waayy worth listening unto itself. Aggressive but with strong, strong groove, and it just sounds so fucking fun.
Favorite tracks: TocarTake Me To The Hospital, TocarPiranha

    18. Vitalic - Flashmob
Speaking of electronica follow-ups that have taken forever but proved well worth the wait... this is some flooring progressive house. Intricate, but always with a sick beat to propel it. The hooks are seemingly endless, and the music's power seldom relents, though cleverly sets up for harder hitting tracks fairly often. If you've heard better house music this year... seriously, tell me! Fuck, man... I wanna go raving now.
    Favorite tracks: Poison Lips, Still

    17. Mastodon - Crack The Skye
I have to be honest, I flat out didn't like this album the first time I listened to it. As they say though, it's more of a grower than a shower, and it wasn't long before it snared me in with its quick flow and severely complex instrumentation. I don't care how many other douchebags like me are on this bandwagon - you give Crack the Skye a few listens, it will give you some damn-near flawless metal.
Favorite tracks: Divinations, Crack The Skye

    16. Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt. II
Speaking of flawless, have you heard the flow on this fucking thing? God damn. It's nonstop, and the beats are maddeningly simple, but equally maddeningly addicting. As the musical goes, who could ask for anything more?
Favorite tracks: Black Mozart, 10 Bricks

    15. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Don't you love how many bands successfully tweaked up their own different brands of strange yet poppy indie? Choppy melodies, fucked up time signatures, mismatched choruses.. the fact that all this works so well is amazing as it is, without the songs themselves being amazing as well.
Favorite tracks: The Bride, Stillness Is the Move

    14. The Antlers - Hospice
Like Bon Iver's from last year, The Antlers' sophomore album has quite the sob story behind it. I imagine next year we'll be treated to another guy isolating himself from the world to write and record an album as well... not that I'd mind, mind you, if it's anywhere near this good. I love how Hospice's heartbreaking theme is left just flimsy enough for personal interpretation, and it's all the more powerful for it. Not to mention the lush feel, intoxicating sounds, and all that other stuff music critics say.
Favorite tracks: TocarKettering, TocarThirteen (just for the end. MY GOD.)

    13. Manic Street Preachers - Journal For Plague Lovers
Unbelievably rousing. Alternately energetic and moving, Journal for Plague Lovers is about as spot on as post-Blur/Oasis britpop gets. If by the time the third track has come and gone and you haven't moved once... well, you know what they say. Good thinking, because that shit kills.
Favorite tracks: TocarFacing Page: Top Left, Marlon J.D.

    12. Dan Deacon - Bromst
I think that probably the most impressive thing about Bromst is just how it builds on itself. The whole album flows remarkably, and each song is continually layered over with tons of sounds that should be weird but all somehow fit wonderfully. More than a few of these songs I was too mesmerized on my first listen to formulate an articulate opinion.
Favorite tracks: Padding Ghost, Woof Woof

    11. White Rabbits - It's Frightening
This one I fell in love with right away. In fact, I think it's the highest album I've ranked with the least amount of listening time, but hey - I'M STANDING BY THIS BITCH. From what I understand, Britt Daniel of Spoon produced this, which would help explain the somewhat Spoonish sound, but that's ultimately reductive. It's far better than just something to listen to while waiting for the next Spoon album; every song has such texture to it but with such apparent effortlessness, and it's a shame more run-of-the-mill indie bands don't sound anywhere NEAR this good.
Favorite tracks: Rudie Fails, The Salesman (Tramp Life)

    10. Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career
Speaking of ungodly addicting indie pop... man, I could not let this one go for a long, long time. It sounds like it should just be derivative Belle and Sebastian wannabe shit, but.. it's just so well written, and all the elements are so cleverly woven together, it's impossible to hate. Every poppy hook and every kitschy melody against that melancholic backdrop just makes me want to fucking melt. Great fucking album.
Favorite tracks: Away With Murder, Swans, Careless Love

    9. Fever Ray - Fever Ray
I still haven't decided whether or not I like this better than The Knife, but it's always a good sign when a solo project is neck and neck with the original group. Not only is this intricate as shit, but it's overwhelmingly atmospheric - tell me this isn't creepy ass music! I mean don't get me wrong, it's infinitely charming, I love how freakin' dark it is, but... whatever, I don't know what I'm saying.
Favorite tracks: TocarIf I Had A Heart, TocarWhen I Grow Up, TocarConcrete Walls

    8. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Yeah, I know... everybody else has already been shitting their pants over this album for nearly the entire year... so I won't get too bad with it. There's just something to be said for something so sophisticated and psychedelic to be so listenable.
Favorite tracks: My Girls, Summertime Clothes, Brother Sport

    7. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
It's kind of funny to envision what is essentially folk music to have so much stuff going on. Everything clicks brilliantly, and does so all throughout the album. This edges out Merriweather Post Pavilion for me simply because it's just so much easier to love, but still rewards repeated listens every bit as much as the former album does.
Favorite tracks: Southern Point, About Face, While You Wait for the Others

    6. Neon Indian - Psychic Chasms
Most placed Memory Tapes higher than Neon Indian, and I can totally understand why. But this album is just so artfully weird, it was irresistible from first listen. It sounds like eighties pop thrown into a blender, then the blender being thrown into a washing machine. Then the washing machine gets hoisted up by a tornado. You get the idea, I mean this shit is just plain WEIRD. But its pop sensibilities are so strong, everything is so catchy.. it's so abstract but so attractive, I'm surprised there aren't more people who love it as much as I do.
Favorite tracks: TocarLaughing Gas, TocarShould Have Taken Acid With You, TocarEphemeral Artery

    5. Major Lazer - Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do
Listening to this, you wouldn't think a couple of white guys produced it; if ever they were out of their element while putting this together, you'd never know it. This stuff seriously pumps you up. It's got energy and charisma to spare, and is a great introduction to dancehall, a genre I know jack shit about. This shit makes you move, dude.. such a ridiculously fun album. It's really hard for me to imagine any non-uptight people not loving this.
Favorite tracks: TocarWhen You Hear The Bassline, TocarCan't Stop Now, TocarMary Jane, TocarPon De Floor

    4. St. Vincent - Actor
I don't think there's a single indie-loving guy who's familiar with St. Vincent and doesn't have a ridiculous crush on her. Um... not me though. Never. And even if I did, her insane creativity would have nothing to do with it. Outstanding melodies with interesting instrumentation... she makes indie sound refreshing again... ahh, I sure am not smitten in the least.
Favorite tracks: Save Me From What I Want, The Neighbors, Actor Out of Work, The Bed

    3. Depeche Mode - Sounds Of The Universe
Yeah, yeah, I love Depeche Mode. I honestly believe that people who put this album down would be praising the shit out of it if it were some newer band and sounded ever so slightly less DM-ish. I'm not going to get into that whole game so many DM fans do, the "BEST ALBUM SINCE VIOLATOR" bullshit (because it really isn't) but my god it's still pretty fucking good. I just think it's so remarkable how after so many years they still turn out consistently good material. Everything about this album, except maybe the dumb title, is absolutely mindblowing.
Favorite tracks: TocarWrong, TocarFragile Tension, TocarPeace, TocarPerfect

    2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
You know, you hear the singles, and you think "god damn that sounds fucking good!" but you never realize just how consistently jaw dropping this is until you listen to It's Blitz! as a whole. There is not a single weak song in this tight set, and the decision to go electronic this time around was incredibly inspired. I mean, anybody could, but they make it work so so well; energetic, fun, well textured, a total knockout from start to finish.
Favorite tracks: TocarZero, TocarHeads Will Roll, TocarSoft Shock, TocarDragon Queen

    1. The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
Absolutely god damn stunning. Not immediately, though; when I first heard this, I didn't exactly hate it, but I was somewhat disappointed. I still liked it of course, so I kept listening to it... and it didn't just grow on me, it crept under my skin and is still there. My whole idea on why it's called Embryonic is that it is never complete to you when you first hear it, it reveals more and more of itself each time you listen, and it's almost as though the album is in a constant embryonic state in your head. Every single time you listen to it, you catch new things, certain melodies resonate more, and so on and so forth. I really can't praise this album's intricacies enough, I fucking love it. And that is my top album of the year.
Favorite tracks: Convinced Of The Hex, The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine, Evil, Aquarius Sabotage, See The Leaves, If, Gemini Syringes, Your Bats, Powerless, The Ego's Last Stand, I Can Be A Frog, Sagittarius Silver Announcement, Worm Mountain, Scorpio Sword, The Impulse, Silver Trembling Hands, Virgo Self-Esteem Broadcast, and Watching The Planets.

.....I'm only half-joking when I list all of the songs as my favorite.

So now that that whole thing is done, why not just go through a couple more things real quick. I mean you've read this much, right? WHY THE HELL NOT.

    -GUILTY PLEASURES-

    Lights - The Listening
To steal a comment a character played by Jon Stewart once said, Valerie Poxleitner is a bottle of pancake syrup with legs. I haven't heard more saccharine loaded, pop bloated shit in a long long time. And I love it.

U2 - No Line On The Horizon
Despite the fact that the second half sputters out, the first half was surprisingly good. Yeah, passionately singing lines like "II WAAAS PUUNCHIN' IIIN THE NUUMBEEERRRS ON THE AAA TEEE EEEMMM MACHIIIIIIIIIINE" isn't exactly the most romantic thing imaginable, but hey, it works.

    Chris Cornell - Scream
I remember it was this big thing about how he was collaborating with Timbaland, and everyone was extremely curious... until the album dropped, and about 90% of Cornell fans promptly vomited wherever they were. But... I kinda liked it. A lot, actually. I know this will sound sarcastic, but I think he sings "That bitch" quite well!

    Discovery - LP
....you know, kinda like a non-artistic Passion Pit. It's damn fun, though. IIIIII-III-IIIII wanna beee youurr boy-boooyyyyfrieeend....

    Weezer - Raditude
The Weezer fan who hasn't yet come to terms with the fact that they will NEVER put out anything remotely close to their first two albums is a very sad person indeed. I actually liked the Green Album and Maladroit, though Make Believe's insulting pandering had even my colon clenching. The Red Album was better, because at least they were trying something new, but here... at least it sounds like they're having fun, and not trying toooo hard to interest all of Weezer's original fans' younger siblings. Oh Rivers Cuomo, you fuckin' creeper.

Calvin Harris - Ready For The Weekend
Quite possibly the most obnoxious dance music I've heard in a while.. and I can't get enough of it.

-OVERRATED/NOT REALLY VERY GOOD/WHAT THE HELL??-

The Big Pink - A Brief History of Love
Why are people so impressed with this album? It seriously sounds like they can't decide what kind of music they want to make, so they'll just mimic styles from all their favorite bands all throughout. I mean I do like it, but more because it sounds like a mix tape of bands I actually DO like, not because it's genuinely good. And how seriously can you take lyrics like “If you really love him then tell me that you love him again” when they come not a minute after a triumphant declaration that “these girls fall like dominoes”? Yeah, sounds real genuine.

Editors - In This Light And On This Evening
You know, it's not even the blatant rip off of New Order's sound that bothers me, I mean that's no big deal really, it happens all the time. What really gets me is how overly dramatic this thing is! I mean there are a few very very good songs in this mess, they do deserve credit for that, but.. god! It's like they were trying way too hard to be sweeping and epic... and that's Muse's job. Speaking of which...

    Muse - The Resistance
Is it just me, or is Matt Bellamy incapable of writing a chorus without the word "we" in it? As if he's trying to hard to rouse his legions of fans. "IT'S US AGAINST THEM YOU GUYS!!! YEAH!!!" God. And what was with that shit when in some interview a while before The Resistance's release, they were asked about a new album, or how they might go about any release at all. The response? "Not that we're against the concept of releasing an album in the traditional format at all. It's just the way the world and technology is evolving, it's presenting a canvas to do whatever you want and just release music as and when it is ready to release. It can happen much more organically."

...wow. WAY TO ANSWER A QUESTION. Jesus christ, I guess "we're not sure" was just too simple.

Alice in Chains - Black Turns to Blue
Actually it's kinda unfair to call this a disappointment, it's still quite good... it's just that it's ultimately on par with Jerry Cantrell's solo stuff, which again, is quite good, but just not Alice in Chains. I've been listening to them for a long long time, and for fourteen years the idea of them putting out new stuff was always lingering somewhere in my head. So when it finally happened... I guess I just expected too much.

    Owl City - Ocean Eyes
Are you serious? "Yeah! Postal Service with a poppier sound, and some gratingly whiny vocals! What a great idea!"

I've tried time and time again, I cannot get into this guy. Funnily enough I liked Lights' music right away.

    Air - Love 2
Man... my faith in them is gone, and it makes me really sad.

Marilyn Manson - The High End of Low
You're out of ideas, dude. Just take a break or something... or maybe finish your movie, or one of the many projects you never complete.

....alright, I've tortured you enough. For those of you who read all the way through... damn. You've got some patience. Skillz. Thanks for sticking around.

  • Loveliest Albums of 2009

    Dez 27 2009, 0h58 por rm508

    In rough order.

    20. brazos - Phosphorescent Blues
A small, plucky Austin TX outfit. Their best feature is their almost total lack of ego. Fine craftsmen of folk pop.
    Best tracks: Kid; Day Glo

    19. Socialist Leisure Party - Tactical POP! for Coffee Cadets
An eight song mini-album from ex-members of Action Painting!, offering jangle of the Fire Engines and Monochrome Set variety. Dangerously close to pastiche in fact, but whatevs, they pastiche with panache.
Best tracks: Down With the Kids; Head in the Hay

    18. Marmoset - Tea Tornado
Another terse and gently abrasive album of post-punk psychedelica from Marmoset, at once simple and baffling.
    Best tracks: Strawberry Shortcakes; Hallway

    17. The Fresh & Onlys - Grey-Eyed Girls
A lot of bands sounded like this in 2009, but The Fresh & Onlys did it best.
Best tracks: Dude's Got a Tender Heart; I'm Gonna Be Your Elevator

    16. Ramona Falls - Intuit
A Menomena offshoot with similar cut-up aesthetics, and similar levels of bombast. Not quite as successful, but a good stopgap.
Best tracks: Salt Sack; Diamond Shovel

    15. Cats on Fire - Our Temperance Movement
    Brisk and lyrical.
Best tracks: Letters From a Voyage To Sweden; Tears in Your Cup

    14. The Deep Dark Woods - Winter Hours
A more memorable folk album than this year’s effort from Magnolia Electric Co. Thanks to eagleheartt.
Best tracks: All the Money I Had is Gone, The Birds on the Bridge

    13. Jayme Stone & Mansa Sissoko - Africa to Appalachia
A collaboration between Canadian banjo player Stone and Malian kora player Sissoko. Like Otis Taylor last year, Stone was interested in exploring the African roots of the banjo, and the results are sweet and fresh.
    Best tracks: Bibi

    12. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
    Mea culpa.
Best tracks: Stillness is the Move; Two Doves

    11. Bell Orchestre - As Seen Through Windows
Delightfully rich instrumental rock. Thanks again to eagleheartt.
Best tracks: Water/Light/Shifts; Air Lines/Land Lines

    10. Alasdair Roberts - Spoils
A folk traditionalist from Scotland who peppers his originals with uncanny modern touches.
Best tracks: The Flyting of Grief & Joy (Eternal Return)

    9. PHANTOGRAM - Eyelid Movies
A treat, comparing favourably with the much more widely touted xx. Thanks be to generalmalaise.
Best tracks: Mouthful of Diamonds; When I'm Small

    8. NED COLLETTE & WIREWALKER - Over the Stones, Under the Stars
Australia’s finest (and almost unknown) psych-folksinger gets a proper backing band and a harder edge, without losing his strangeness.
Best tracks: Come Clean; One Evening, In the Middle of the Road

    7. Papercuts - You Can Have What You Want
Papercuts’ greatest asset, lifting their thick, mopey, organ-dominated 60s sound, is a sense of rhythm. Even the slower tracks have a lovely rolling momentum.
Best tracks: Dictator's Lament; Future Primitive; The Wolf

    6. Bowerbirds - Upper Air
A rickety yet grand folk sound. Songs drift and metamorphose without losing drive and purpose. Excellent songwriting.
Best tracks: Beneath Your Tree; House of Diamonds; Ghost Life

    5. Alela Diane - To Be Still
A slow-grower with subtle charms. From Portland OR, naturally.
Best tracks: Dry Grass & Shadows; White As Diamonds; Every Path

    4. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure At Heart
    Youth! Love! Guitars!
Best tracks: Young Adult Friction; This Love is Fucking Right!; The Tenure Itch

    3. Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
One of his best, either as Smog, or as Bill.
Best tracks: Jim Cain; Rococo Zephyr

    2. The Bats - The Guilty Office
A superb return. Lushly orchestrated music from a group of confident, grown-up songwriters.
Best tracks: Castle Lights; The Orchard

    1. The Crayon Fields - All the Pleasures of the World
Completing a southern hemisphere double-act: Melbourne’s The Crayon Fields, sounding accomplished and awkward, premeditated and graceless at the same time – a late adolescent sidekick of The Guilty Office. An indie pop album with genuine and lasting charm.
Best tracks: Mirrorball; All the Pleasures of the World; Graceless

    Honourable Mentions:
Anouar Brahem - The Astounding Eyes of Rita
    Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Vs. Children
    The Clean - Mister Pop
The Clientele - Bonfires on the Heath
Extra Golden - Thank You Very Quickly
Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic
    Kelly Saunders - Kelly Saunders
The Phantom Band - Checkmate Savage
    The xx – xx

    Classical:

    5. Kronos Quartet - Floodplain
A tougher-than-usual Kronos taking on an international programme, with a predominant tone of grief and pain.

    4. Henry Purcell - Ten Sonatas in Four Parts
Some of Purcell’s finest, given a virtuosic reading by the Retrospect Trio.

    3. Jonathan Harvey - Complete String Quartets
Harvey’s String Quartet No.4 with live electronics is a major achievement.

    2. Kaija Saariaho - L’amour de Loin
Award-winning opera gets an excellent debut recording.

    1. David Lang - The Little Match Girl Passion
Won Lang a Pulitzer Prize. The writing – for voice, percussion and bells – is incantatory, urgent, and highly moving.

...Как же я не люблю составлять топы топов, сравнивать музыку разных стилей, чтобы выявить доменанту. Любой артист, подходящий к создании музыки с умом, достоен уважения за проделанный труд. Dez 26 2009, 23h23 por Zar9384

No order, ten favorites this year:

    Smith Westerns - Smith Westerns

Wow. This album is solid from start to finish, and yet these guys didn't really do anything special with their music. It's noisy garage pop about girls and teendom, with inspirations that are less reference points than straight up copies, but damn did they do it right.

Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There are Mountains

This album was almost tailor made for my musical tastes. Intense singer who sometimes reaches out further than his vocal talents allow? Check. Uncommon song progressions? Check. Distortion and talented instrumentation? Check. Catchy and Singable? Check. Tempo changes and variation between songs? Check. It may not be for everyone, hell it might not even be a good album, all I know is it has everything I look for in an album, in my mind it's nearly perfect.

    White Denim - Fits

White Denim make such good music. They definitely matured a bit on their second disc, pumping up the craftsmanship and generally tightened up their act. Emotional Danceable distorted funk rock with wah wah pedals, double tracking and tons of reverb, all done very well.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

Eh, it's a great album, I don't care what the hell you think. As big of an AC fan as I am, this one still took me a while to get into. It's definitely missing Deacon's organic guitar, but avey and panda more than make up for it with their excellent songwriting.

The Rural Alberta Advantage - Home Towns

If In The Aeroplane Over The Sea was made in 2009, this is what it would sound like. Ok, the lyrics aren't nearly as affecting, or heart wrenching, but at times they try. (but really how can you top NMH?) I'm not comparing it to the greatness of ITAOTS, but it does sound like it. Also, the drummer is so high in the mix that it makes me love it even more. The drummer definitely leads this band, even though he doesn't sing.

    Port O'Brien - Threadbare

Port O'Brien have managed to become one of my favorite bands with this album. Way more mature than their last one, and as a friend pointed out, the songs are less focused on the nautical aspect of their lives than the last, but it's still amazing. It's missing some of the charm of their previous albums, but it more than makes up for it in the polish they've added to the songwriting and instrumentation.

    Mastodon - Crack The Skye

Ok, this album is awesome. Most of you guys know why I listen to Mastodon, and either love the hell out of them too, or couldn't care less. Here's the explanation of the plot of this album, straight from Brann's mouth. It's about the only description of this album that does it justice:

"There is a paraplegic and the only way that he can go anywhere is if he astral travels. He goes out of his body, into outer space and a bit like Icarus, he goes too close to the sun, burning off the golden umbilical cord that is attached to his solar plexus. So he is in outer space and he is lost, he gets sucked into a wormhole, he ends up in the spirit realm and he talks to spirits telling them that he is not really dead. So they send him to the Russian cult, they use him in a divination and they find out his problem. They decide they are going to help him. They put his soul inside Rasputin's body. Rasputin goes to usurp the czar and he is murdered. The two souls fly out of Rasputin's body through the crack in the sky(e) and Rasputin is the wise man that is trying to lead the child home to his body because his parents have discovered him by now and think that he is dead. Rasputin needs to get him back into his body before it's too late. But they end up running into the Devil along the way and the Devil tries to steal their souls and bring them down…there are some obstacles along the way."

    Cursive - Mama I'm Swollen

Oh Cursive, I sometimes see you as a guilty pleasure, but your music keeps getting so much better that I feel less and less that way every time you release an album. Even though they used to be a bad emo/pop punk band, they've refined their sound to excellence. Stand out tracks are From The Hips, and I Couldn't Love You. Definitely gets a boost for it's self deprecating lyrical themes. Cursive does that whole "looking at the bigger picture" thing, without making it too deep or mysterious, or making it sound pretentious or silly, yet still allowing the listener to connect to it.

The Dutchess And The Duke - Sunset/Sunrise

Another band that wears its influences on its sleeve, yet still does a great job is The Dutchess and The Duke. Basically an early Stones rip off with a female singer. This album is definitely a step up for them though. They sound much more mature, yet their songs are still catchy as hell.

    miRthkon - Vehicle

Math Rock and Jazz combination work so well. Lots of very technical guitar lines and tongue in cheek humor. This album definitely isn't for everyone, but I sure loved it.

All of these could easily be in the top ten as well:

    The Mars Volta - Octahedron
Akron/Family - Set 'Em Wild Set 'Em Free
    Baroness - Blue Record
    Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
Various Artists - Dark Was The Night
Danger Mouse and Sparkle Horse - Dark Night Of The Soul
    Dan Deacon - Bromst
    The xx - XX
    Woods - Songs Of Shame
    Volcano Choir - Unmap
The Thermals - Now We Can See
    Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer
Stardeath and White Dwarfs - The Birth
    St. Vincent - Actor
    Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
    Neon Indian - Psychic Chasms
The Mountain Goats - The Life Of The World To Come
    Bowerbirds - Upper Air
    Clues - Clues
    Crystal Antlers - Tentacles
    Dirty Projectors- Bitte Orca
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes - Up From Below
The Dodos - Time To Die
Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle

Also, Fall Be Kind by Animal Collective was perfect, but it's an EP so I didn't include it.

  • Top Ten Albums Of 2009.

    Dez 24 2009, 22h56 por Confessions87

I had planned to do a list of my twenty favourite albums of this year but I don't feel I've properly listened to twenty albums solidly to judge them in a ranking as yet, so it's narrowed to a standard Top 10 list. This list is obviously subject to change over the next coming year, albums may be added and some taken away. Note that the albums at the end of this list that almost made the mark are in no order. I haven't properly listened to them to give them full merit, and their place within a potential Top 20 list, or indeed, this Top 10 list below may only come around in a year's time when I've had to fully digest them.

    10. Passion Pit - Manners. Fantastic debut album here and one that will forever remind me of the crazy heat of late June/early July in central London this summer. A time when I was graduating, moving house, looking for a new job, saying goodbye to old friends and generally growing up. TocarMoth's Wings and TocarThe Reeling are great pop/dance.

    9. Wild Beasts - Two Dancers. Another fantastic album that came about through chance from a band from my hometown of Leeds. The album-titled two parter is particularly stunning.

    8. Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster. An album that was technically released in 2008 in a lot of territories, but didn't receive a UK release until January. However, the re-release of the album along with the disc of eight new tracks ensures that this is in the list. TocarBad Romance, TocarPoker Face and TocarJust Dance are three pop standards and probably some of the best modern pop in recent memory.

    7. Fever Ray - Fever Ray. Debut album from The Knife's Karin Dreijer Andersson is one of the most evocative and unusual releases of the year. Tracks such as TocarSeven and TocarWhen I Grow Up are great pop and wonderful escapism. Also the video artist of the year.

    6. Bat for Lashes - Two Suns. Second album from Natasha Khan doesn't disappoint after the stunning debut in 2006. The best track for me is TocarTwo Planets, but TocarDaniel and TocarGood Love are ridiculously replayable songs.

    5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!. Third album is a triumphant change of direction for this wonderfully addictive rock band. Doesn't quite live up to the prowess of Fever To Tell but then it's not meant to. The production and successful branching out into a disco-themed electro discoball wonderland is why this album succeeded so well. And the best album cover of the year.

    4. Florence + The Machine - Lungs. Debut album from Florence Welch blew my socks off back in July. Sometimes the lyrics grate, and it's definitely a debut album in the sense that there's room for growth... but into something hopefully even more wonderful. The soundscapes and vocal delivery on TocarCosmic Love and TocarDog Days Are Over will stay with you forever.

    3. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest. Second album from Brooklyn's Grizzly Bear doesn't fail to impress. The production is slow and meandering, but the rewards are very great. The fact that the album leaked months before it's physical release seemed to only build up a fanbase unseen for an indie band in recent years.

    2. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion. Eighth album from Animal Collective polarises fans and is seen by some as one of the finest records ever made and by some as the decade's most overrated release. For the majority of 2009 it was my undisputed favourite record of the year. Exploring the rest of the band's catalogue brings it down slightly as Strawberry Jam and Feels are equally as stunning in my opinion.

    1. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca. An unexpected list-topper but a deserved one at that in my opinion. The vocal dynamics and arrangements alongside stellar production make this for one of the most interesting vocal albums since Björk's Medúlla. Tracks like Stillness Is the Move and Useless Chamber are fantastically melodic and deeply engaging in their use of stylistic vocal arrangings. An album of its time for sure, and will show to be, an album ahead of its time in years to come.

Albums that almost made the mark:

Anthony And The Johnsons - The Crying Light
    St. Vincent - Actor
    Neon Indian - Psychic Chasms
    Atlas Sound - Logos
Animal Collective - Fall Be Kind EP
    The xx - xx
    Tori Amos - Midwinter Graces
    Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
    Röyksopp - Junior
  • My Albums of the Year: 2009

    Dez 24 2009, 17h48 por jkates87

This list is a run-down of my most scrobbled albums that were released in 2009. There are obviously albums not featured in this list. Those released early in the year obviously have a statistical advantage, but hey.

If you want to try this out for yourself, then you can do by using this dude's code (it takes some time to work it all out, so just be patient): http://lastfmstats.livefrombmore.com/albumoftheyear/

    20. Wilco - Wilco (The Album)

    Released 26/6/2009
Wilco are one of my favourite bands of all time and I think they are generally underrated. Within the genre, Jeff Tweedy is probably the most well-rounded composer aside from the late Elliott Smith. However, this record generally didn't stand up to the calibre that I would expect from Wilco and whilst it just makes it on to my top twenty scrobbled albums, it would also probably feature quite prominently in a 'disappointment of 2009' list.

    19. Lymbyc Systym - Shutter Release

    Released 3/11/2009
Their 2007 release 'Love Your Abuser' left high expectations for this 2009 release, and I must say they didn't disappoint. A truly stunning amalgamation of ambient, folk, post-rock, IDM, indie...etc. Needless to say, Arms & Sleepers' 2009 release titled Matador probably pips this record to the post in this field, but unfortunately I only got hold of that a few weeks ago so it hasn't been officially scrobbled enough for the all-mighty stats chart (although it has been basically on repeat for a fortnight).

    18. Bibio - The Apple And The Tooth

    Released 9/11/2009
One of the busiest men in music during 2009, aside from perhaps Tim Hecker and Aiden Baker. This record adds a couple of interesting songs to the Bibio repertoire but crumbles under the behemoth of Ambivalence Avenue. Whilst I like Bibio's remix of Clark's Ted, the remixes on this LP are generally dull.

    17. The Mars Volta - Octahedron

    Released 22/6/2009
After some truly awful releases, one of my teenage favourites comes up with something that's not entirely crap. Horray.

    16. Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures

    Released 16/11/2009
The 'super group'. I harboured little expectation for this record but it has proverbially slapped me in the face. Reasserts Grohl as one of the best contemporary drummers ever in existence, Holme as a consistent composer, and that other one from Led Zep is okay and all.

    15. The Appleseed Cast - Sagarmatha

    Released 17/2/2009
2009 saw the (relatively late) discovery of Appleseed Cast and they have rapidly become one of my favourite bands. Whilst Sagarmatha isn't their strongest release, I have been playing a lot of AC.

    14. A Place to Bury Strangers - Exploding Head

    Released 5/10/2009
The guy behind Death By Audio guitar pedals writes an interesting, dynamic and engrossing album that betters their stellar début: go figure. I saw these guys live this year as well. I still don't know quite how he makes these noises - and I'm sure most listeners will probably categorise it as just that, noise - but it comes together cohesively in to something ultimately powerful.

    13. Luke Vibert - We Hear You

    Released 10/8/2009
The in-and-out Vibert sound never seems to change. Solid but unimaginative and uninspiring. Following Milanese down a wop-wop-de-pssssh dubstep route probably won't work either Luke.

    12. Nathan Fake - hard islands

    Released 27/4/2009
Stunningly different to DIASOL. Most probably thought this was a lazy turn for the poorer; I disagree. Keeping 8 minute four-on-the-floor lo-fi techno interesting isn't easy.

    11. Prefuse 73 - Meditation Upon Meditations (The Japanese Diaries)

    Released 25/4/2009
Another gigantic IDM discovery for me this year. Beautifully bridges the gap between IDM and hip-hop without being too reliant on stealing funk samples.

    10. Crime In Choir - Gift Givers

    Released 29/1/2009
Probably the most difficult album ever to get hold of. Not sure what the record label were playing at with this one. Either way, the band pull something out of the top-drawer in an unwavering assault on the haters of prog and synth rock's love child.

    9. Clark - Growl's Garden

    Released 23/3/2009
Soooo much anticipation for Clark in 2009. Turning Dragon wasn't exactly my cup of tea following Body Riddle. Growl's Garden didn't bode too well, but holy hot hell did Totems Flare deliver.

    8. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

    Released 11/1/2009
This is probably on everyone's list. Even my dad owns this record.

    7. Bibio - Vignetting The Compost

    Released 3/2/2009
Potentially the last truly 'folk' record from Bibio. Kinda sad to see the end of what is a uniquely distinctive sound that he has tailored to perfection. Not quite sure how he could have continued doing what he was doing on Warp though; and who says no to Warp?

    6. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

    Released 25/5/2009
If anyone asks me whilst in an inebriated state during the festive period what my favourite album of 2009 is, I'll probably blurt out something about Grizzly Bear (trying to pronounce the album title will pose as somewhat of a challenge I fear). Further thought might lead to some other close contenders (see this list), but over all this wouldn't be a terrible place to lay my head.

    5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

    Released 8/3/2009
Unbelievable. Where the hell did they pull this one out from? This is how all indie-pop should sound. Forever.

    4. Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue

    Released 22/6/2009
    1. Sign to Warp
    2. Write one of the best IDM records ever
    3. ?
    4. Profit!

    3. The Flaming Lips - Embryonic

    Released 12/10/2009
A good year for Wayne and the boys. Reaffirmed themselves as one of the best live bands I've ever seen on the back of an 18 track double album that never lags. It sounds like they've been at the bathroom cabinet again. Those who like hearing The Flaming Lips on adverts for continental beers might have heard the last of them.

    2. The Strange Boys - And Girls Club

    Released 3/3/2009
Released 2009, sounds like 1969. These incredibly strange boys have taught me a thing or two about the power of music production. Probably not an eclectic sound - out of tune vocals and 'jangly guitars' doesn't do justice - but some truly fantastic songs on there. Another from the never-ending pool of quality music of Austin TX none the less.

    1. Clark - Totems Flare

    Released 24/6/2009
Number 1 unsurprisingly. The local lad done good.

My 25 Favorite Albums of 2009:

    25. Sun O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions // Ambient, noise; Almost simultaneously scary and beautiful at times. ***

    24. Doves - Kingdom Of Rust // KOR is no Lost Souls, but it does have some pretty great moments. Even if the album itself is sort of schizophrenic with its flashes of what-the-kids-want-now electronic pop, “Winter Hill,” “Spellbound,” and “Lifelines” are sure to please any fan of well-crafted, layered brit-rock. All in all, it’s nice to see an elegant and bold return to form for them after a couple of boring affairs. ***

    23. Mew - No More Stories Are Told Today... // The first thing you notice about Mew upon first listen is how unique they are. (Labeling them properly certainly requires hyphenated words.) This is pretty impressive considering how accessible they are. The other striking thing you notice about them is their keen sense of melody, rhythm, and production. “Introducing Palace Players,” “Repeaterbeater,” “Hawaii,” and “Tricks Of The Trade” would be the standouts for me. The whole album is pretty remarkably paced though. Even if it's not as good as ATGHK. Great “pretentious art rock” band. ***

    22. Delorean - Ayrton Senna EP // I love this dance-y electronic pop music that's very much in the vein of Air France, Cut Copy, etc. It is quite addicting and I can't wait to see them in March. "Senna" has one of the best grooves this year and the remix is probably even better. ***

    21. Bear in Heaven - Beast Rest Forth Mouth // Art-y indie rock in the vein of TV on the Radio or Yeasayer, but more sublime. It's a grower. "You Do You," "Lovesick Teenagers," and "Casual Goodbye." ***

    20. Sonic Youth - The Eternal // What really can I say about a band that has quite honestly shaped the way I listen to music? Even though I didn’t care for Rather Ripped, this band has gone through several transformations since the glory days. And they pretty much do what they want at this point, as they have absolutely nothing left to prove. Add “Massage The History” to the list of SY classics. ***

    19. Deerhunter - Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP // Atlas Sound's Logos was pretty good too, but this is more consistent I think. Short and sweet effort from my neighbor. I love Atlanta! ***

    18. 800beloved - Bouquet // Understated (and underappreciated) throwback to 80s indie pop music. Kinda like the XX, but better. "Skeleton Collection" will stop the world and melt with you. ***

    17. The Antlers - Hospice // Pitchfork discovery right here. Funeral-esque in feel. Not as majestic or anything although it has its moments. Very depressing, but that won't stop you right? Overall pretty sincere and heartfelt stuff. "Two" is really good, but I still like "Kettering" the best. I got this really eerie sense of dread the first time I heard it. Like I was really in for it. ***

    16. Various Artists - 5: Five Years Of Hyperdub // Double-disc dub-step compilation. If you like dubstep and Burial, you'll dig this. If not, you probably won't. Speaking of Burial, he's on it. And "Fostercare" is one of his best songs. Zomby, Darkstar, Ikonika, and King Midas Sound are really good too. ***

    15. Fleeting Joys - Occult Radiance // Shoegaze by-the-numbers. And my favorite kind of shoegaze as well. Not the droning brit-pop of yesteryear kind (The Sleepover Disaster). Or the scuzzy Sunset Strip BRMC/JAMC kind (Gliss). But rather takes its playbook from the genre's early 90's canon. It's basically this year's best attempt at recreating MBV's Loveless. Doesn't succeed, of course, but it sure is pleasant. Even great at times. Especially on "You Are The Darkness." They really need to tour. ***

    14. O+S - O+S // Orenda from Azure Ray. Would probably rate this higher, but I've only been listening for a month. Very much in the vein of Cat Power, et al. Straightforward, heart-on-sleeve female singer-songwriter kinda stuff. Very well-produced. I dig it. "New Life" is as elegant as they come. ***1/2

    13. A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Ashes Grammar // Sprawling ambient/ dream pop album. Better and more coherent than their solid debut. With its vast scope and indirect approach to song structure, it really tries to eschew the concept of zeroing in on a single track. But I pinpointed the ones with some of the best moments. "Close Chorus" and "Passionate Introverts." But you really owe it to yourself to experience this spacious album in its entirety. Headphones recommended. ***1/2

    12. Mono - Hymn To The Immortal Wind // Best post-rock band in existence? i'm probably rating this so high because i saw them live and was completely floored. If you dig this kind of loud-quiet-loud instrumental stuff at all, I'd check them out. "The Battle To Heaven" is a titan of a song. ***1/2

    11. Love of Diagrams - Nowhere Forever // Noise-rock/indie rock. Got dropped by their label. A very good thing because it made them release a great album. The self-titled EP showed potential, but didn't contain anything special. Well, now they are. Think Dirty-er Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, etc. Grows on you with repeated listens. ***1/2

    10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! // You've all probably heard this, but "Zero" is one of the songs of the year. By the way, none of them are subpar. ***1/2

    09. The Horrors - Primary Colours // Joy Division, Pornography-era Cure, accessible Bauhaus, etc. post-punk throwback band. This time, album delivers. Unlike, say, The Killers and other pop bands like that, Horrors dare to use feedback and other atonal qualities to give their songs more character and definition. A band that I thought/hoped would really get huge this year and usher in a "New Ice Age," but didn't. Oh well. ***1/2

    08. Metric - Fantasies // I listened to this more this year than probably any other '09 album. First 6 songs are impeccable. The "Waves" b-side wasn't included. If it was, this album would be top 5 material easy. The last 4 songs are spotty and don't really measure up to the first 6 IMO, but what can ya do? I'm sure you've all heard this. ***1/2

    07. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion // You've all heard this. I'm not big on Animal Collective, but I really did enjoy the even-numbered songs on this album. "Bluish" is amazing. "My Girls" is too. The odd-numbered ones got old after an initial fascination back in January. [On a side note: they really fell back out of favor with me after their latest EP though. I don't want to hear songs about smoking weed and watching construction workers pissing.] ***1/2

    06. Fever Ray - Fever Ray // Hey it's what's-her-face from The Knife. No, but seriously. I like this more than I like The Knife's albums to be honest. It's much more intimate. "When I Grow Up" and "Keep The Streets Empty For Me." ***1/2

    05. White Lies - To Lose My Life // Post-punk, new wave, brit-rock band in the vein of The Sound, Interpol, Editors, etc. The first three songs on this album are spectacular. Utilizes one of my favorite guitar sounds of all-time. ***1/2

    04. Yagya - Rigning // Perhaps the best ambient artist currently recording music? Eno and Aphex Twin 's best ambient work had this evocation of modern environments: airports, hospital waiting rooms, other modern facilities. Yagya is all about nature. Rigning isn't groundbreaking like his 2002 Rhythm Of Snow album, but anywhere's a good starting point with him. ***1/2

    03. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart // Shoegaze/Twee-pop. In fact, the ultimate splicing of these two genres. I'm sure you've heard it, but if not, it is a must-hear. If this band dared to crank their amps up sometimes (such as at the end of "Stay Alive"), they'd be out of this world. Anyway, this album is really addicting. Every song above average and memorable. ***1/2

    02. National Skyline - Bliss & Death // Art rock/shoegaze. NatSky's first new album in 8 years. Jeff Garber was in the emo-turned-heavy-post-punk band Hum during the mid-90s. This band was formed because he wanted to record a really long song. That song didn't happen and they made some incredible art rock recording instead that sounded like they could have been answers to OK Computer or Priest = Aura. This album is less experimental than their earlier stuff, but still very well-produced and lush. Lots of good songs with interesting twists and turns. "Glimmer," "Revenge," and "Kingdom." The guitar textures of Dempsey (also from The Joy Circuit) are lovely and often evoke late 80s and early 90s indie bands. Great for headphones. ***1/2

    01. Bat for Lashes - Two Suns // The only 4-star album for me this year. And it's a good one. Kind of like Saturdays = Youth last year, but everything is sultry; sweet; and sophisticated in that very feminine way. I knew this girl had talent with Fur and Gold in 2006, but now she's truly released something spectacular. Album does seem to kinda taper off toward the middle-end, but it really doesn't. It only seems to because "Pearl's Dream" is so damn good. And not even a song as good as "Good Love" (which would be the standout on most albums) can follow it. "Daniel" is appearing in many top 10 song lists this year - and I don't disagree. But "Pearl's Dream" is still better. Hell, "Glass" and "Sleep Alone" would probably make my Top 20. This album is just phenomenal and I love Natasha Khan very much right now. ****
