New Dubstep Group.
Out 5 2008, 15h48 por BurntFingers
I just created a new dubstep group.
I discovered dubstep, and now I can't sleep
It's the second group in my "I discovered [genre], and now I can't sleep" series, the first being breakcore.
The group is new, so it looks a little bare at the moment, but currently connected are;

Blitzen Trapper
Wooo - what a packed night! And loads of great requests, old and new!
Speaking of which, the best new track was 'Gold For Bread' by Blitzen Trapper. It's off their very poppy new album, 'Furr,' and it was released last week. Check it out for singalong loveliness!

Gary Numan
The best old track was 'Observer' by Gary Numan. I was a teenage Numanoid and it's pretty obvious that his synthiness has stuck with me since then in the music I make myself. Where would synthpop, electro and all their modern derivatives be without Numan's huge influence? 'Observer' is just perfect.

Tonight's best new track was 'The Beast Is Us' by Braintax. This track sums up why I love hip hop so much more than any rock, indie or other song-form music. It's so powerful, it's the perfect meld of brain and body. The lyrics are ferocious, intelligent and funny and the beat is undeniable. How can you go wrong with shit like this? :
"Spit 'bout crimes we forget for the sake of our own little tragedy's
Incidental maladies
Irrelevant like a fucking Akon ballad is
The biggest shame of this society we live in
While we act all spiritual when we're money driven
It's the way we forget in a hell of a rush
Like 'If it ain't affecting me, then I ain't too fussed'
Then there's bombs on the street and us Brits get shaky
But how can we be shocked - Check our leadership lately?
They're rattling the sabres, talking 'bout Jesus
Fundamentalist believers acting like crusaders
Memories are short over here
The zeitgeist is a truck that the media steer
So we ain't on the streets protesting - We're stuck in front of TV sets digesting
Forgetting about the lies and the unfound weapons
Suggestions, the questions we should be asking journalists a second
I'm (BRAAAIIIIN) taxing - the opposite of aspirin
Blood is on the streets and the East End soaking it up
Bush making me a target - and I'm not too pleased
There's no peace when the beast is us"
There's more going on in that one verse from Braintax than a decade's worth of mewling indie kid slop. I really hope that Braintax isn't quitting hip hop as has been reported. We need more artists like him, not fewer.

The best old track was The Vaselines' 'Son Of A Gun.' What a stunning band and what a perfect pop song. Ace.
Tonight, you heard:
Raine Maida - Careful What You Wish For
System of a Down - Suite Pee
Lil' Wayne - Dr. Carter

Recommendation #34 [Skream - Watch The Ride]
Set 17 2008, 20h47 por ofLogic
Skream - Watch The Ride

Skream is one of the dubstep scene's most revered producer/DJs. Both in the studio and in the club he has been a fresh-faced and forward thinking pivot of a genre that has been sneaking up behind the mainstream for the past two years. Skream, also known as Ollie Jones, has been responsible for some of the hardest and darkest anthems including his classic Midnight Request Line, recently revamped by Hot Chip and fidget-house king Switch. He is also one of the most prolific producers out there with a rumoured 1,500 as yet unheard tunes stashed away in his studio bunker.
If you are already a fan of dubstep then this is a must-have for the sheer volume of new material and exclusives. Those new to the genre and curious to see why a dubstep artist is in line for a Mercury Music Prize may want to look elsewhere for their first fix. This is dark and unrelenting music aimed straight at the dance floor with highlights including Skream's the Shining, Smut's Badman and Benga's 28 Basslines VIP. Benga's Diary of an Afro Warrior and Skream's self-titled debut are more melodic and eclectic home listening offerings…

Headphone Commute’s Best of 2008 on The Blend
Ago 16 2008, 14h03 por liftmuziek

So you've read my Best of 2008 [so far...] (you've read it, right?), and seen some familiar artists, while the rest seem unknown and mysterious. If only you could check out all of these recommendations... If only you had the time to plow through the samples and purchase the mentioned albums... Well, fear not. I've got a special treat for you. Bevin Campbell from the Australian radio show, The Blend (PBS 106.7FM) has contacted me to feature the Headphone Commute's Best of 2008 selections on his July 22nd episode. I was able to secure a copy of the broadcast with the permission to re-post on Headphone Commute! That's right, kiddies, over an hour of music, spanning the best of my selections across a variety of genres ranging from ambient, downtempo and IDM... to dubstep, experimental hip hop, minimal techno and even breakcore. There's only so much that Campbell is able to fit into his fine program, but after a nice opening with The Herbaliser, he squeezed in the following roster (in order of appearance) : Hecq, Emanuele Errante, Evan Bartholomew, Hol Baumann, Kangding Ray, Kettel, The Flashbulb, Barry Lynn, Meat Beat Manifesto, Benga, iTAL tEK, and Venetian Snares... What a superb sweep of genres, that is starting on a minimal side of the spectrum and progressing towards the insanity of jungle infused drill'n'bass! But wait, there's more! The second part of the show opens up with my favorite Reader's selections for the first part of '08, which includes Quiet Village, Kelpe, Flying Lotus, Scuba, Ellen Allien, The Black Dog, 2562 and Portishead in closing. And best of all, this is a free download with almost two hours of music! You can't afford to miss out on this one. Let's face it - I shouldn't even have to sell you on this one. A great preview of best of the crop! Huge thanks to Bevin for his hard work the and a fantastic show! This one goes down into the archives. Forever...
