  • SNUZZFEST LOVEFEST

    Nov 29 2009, 10h39 por ChudleyCannons

Brooke and I went all the way out to North Carolina to partake in what will likely be one of the top most musical events of my life (right up there with the Ben Folds Five Reunion last year.) Granted I have a somewhat sick addiction to North Carolina bands (that does stem out of Ben Folds Five). Anyway, SnuzzFest afforded us to see some bands that I never, ever, EVER dreamed of seeing live. Let alone Master Snuzz himself. Brooke, Mel and I did get a special treat December 2007 when Snuzz played us a few songs in his living room, but for such a musical genius we of course felt blessed (but a little cheated too.) So getting to see Snuzz preform live was. Huge. HUUGGGE. A huge wagering point into making the flight from Chicago to just be in North Carolina for 48 hours. And worth every damn penny. But before we actually get to SnuzzFest itself, let's talk about the night before.

We got to NC without a hitch, despite being a small hitch at the hotel. We checked in fine and all that, but when we went up to the room to open the door, the card didn't work. Maintenance came and got us in and then also noted that our smoke alarm was beeping that that battery was ALSO dead. So Mr Man fixed it. Then Brooke and I slept. It was awesome. We were tired.

Then we got up and drove into Chapel Hill. First stop, cause the son was setting was the Whatever and Ever, Amen house. ITS TINY. I mean, it was way before Ben Co had any money, so it makes sense... But I felt SO awkward standing outside, hell, IN THE LAWN of someone else's house, that just happens to live somewhere Ben Folds used to live/recorded his most popular record. Brooke can tell you, I was kinda tweaking out over it.

Then of course, HAD to go eat at Pepper's Pizza and gawk at the terrible, terrrrrrriiiiible, painting of Ben Folds on the wall. Seriously. It's the only bad one on the wall. And it's all the same artist! We walked in and got seated right away (though it was pretty moderately busy) and Brooke and I noticed almost immediately that Animal Collective's "My Girls" (I think) was playing. And we were super pleased to discover after the track finished we were just apparently going to listen to ALL of Merriweather Post Pavilion. We sang along to whatever you can actually sing along with when it comes to Animal Collective. Ha. And noticed that some of the servers were too. Would be a cool fuckin place to work, except it's SO cheap.

Then after eating we went and got Coldstone. Cause we could. And we were on vacation, DAMNIT. After our noms we headed out to UNC just to reminisce... but before we got there we got distracted by this AWESOME band busking. They even had a saw in the band! After a few songs we did depart for UNC just to go to Memorial Hall and feel like tourists. And go, OH this is where we saw the "Ben Fold's Five tickets" sign on the actual box office! OH this is that alleyway where Darren and Robert came out. THIS Is where we hung out with EVERYONE who was there. SHIT THIS ALL HAPPENED HERE AND IT WAS WONDERFUL. And then we left.

Next day we got up and went to Greensboro, to a Sushi restaurant I'd previously looked up. FORGOT, whoops, to look up if it was closed on Sunday. Was. Damn. Brooke used her fancy phone to find us one that was. So there we went, and turned out it was less than a mile from The Blind Tiger. HOORAY. It was noms (expensive, but all sushi is). We headed over to the venue, and eventually got ourselves some beers (OM NOM BLUE MOON). Then took our place in the second row, also feeling awkward about standing front row at this kind of gig. Catie and Chuck seemed to be the emcees of the night. Let's talk a bit about the set up of SnuzzFest.

SnuzzFest was set up for the AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME human being that is Britt Harper Uzzell. Seriously, that man is more than five AWESOMES but words fail to accurately describe him. Anyway. Snuzz, as he's known (though with an umlaut, that I can't be bothered to figure out how to get here on my blog) musically has recently been diagnosed with cancer. And, as a musician -and one that, for some stupid bullshit reason of the universe, never got the recognition he deserves - has no health insurance. With the chemo it's going to cost him about $50,000 A MONTH. A FUCKIN MONTH! The guy has never made more than the poverty line (according to some articles I've read about this) and so Catie and Django (of The Old Ceremony and a certain level of AWESOME) set up the first SnuzzFest, to help offset the cost. Well it went so well Catie set up SnuzzFest West (Django was out on tour with tOC). Which we had enough advance notice that Brooke and I could make travel plans. At SnuzzFest everyone plays Snuzz songs. It was all sorts of awesome. All these musicians that I've heard so much about/listened to all together in one place playing that man's songs. It was just wonderful.

The night kicked off with Steve Williard (of Amplify This... formerly Chuck Folds Five) started out the night with "The Apology". Which was just. killer. A woman I'd never heard of before, Jessica Mashburn, apparently, covered Bus Stop's "No One," which I was super glad to hear cause it is still, to this day, a Snuzz Favorite. Doug Davis and friend covered "Carving Pumpkins" which was also phenomenal. Caitlin Cary's "Like It Matters" was also a highlight of the first set. BUT. THE highlight of set one (which was all non-band) was when Snuzz pulled the Big GMC on stage for "People at Work." I don't actually know how Snuzz and GMC met, but long and short of it is GMC has some sort of mental challenges, but Snuzz included GMC's voice overs on his record Harper. And GMC got up there and just started talking to us about how much Snuzz means to him and how we all need to pray for Snuzz cause Snuzz is his best friend. And. I. Cried. GMC had the ability to say what we are all thinking. It was so touching. Also during this set we were behind a man who had a Shut Up and Listen to Majosha t-shirt on. I was lookin at the back of this shirt trying to read it, and then went... UH that's Ben Folds' handwriting! Wait! I know these lyrics! Wait, what the fuck song is that? And could sing it but not remember what it was called. Talked to the guy eventually.... and he apparently worked sound for them back in the day. HA!

Then there was a short break when they switched over to the house band. (Which included our dear friends Chuck Folds, Steve Williard - and new dear friend Eddie Walker. HA - story with that later, also NC legend Jeff Carroll was on most, if not all songs). But while they were setting up/makin the switch Brooke and I took a bathroom break. And while we were in the back we went to write in the SnuzzFest LoveFest book. And who's standing right there, but Dean (Daddy) Folds. We'd seen him walk in, and we kinda shared the look. Haha. And I was kickin myself for NOT having my Messner Vinyl. Can you imagine having that signed by all FOUR voices on the record!? DAMN TOM MAXWELL WAS THERE TOO! You hear him laugh in Army. OH GOD WHAT WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN. (Just dawned on me as I'm writing this.) Anyway. As I'm signing the book Brooke keeps glancing at Mr Folds. And he sticks out his hand and introduces himself to us. And then remembered me (had to tell him where we met - May 30, 2008 Cary, NC) And talked about Gracie a bit, cause she was there when I met him then too. ha. Anyway, it was great. Kinda weird, but great! Then Sledge was coming on so we had to make our way back to the front.

Sledge played "Eddie" and FUCKING KILLED IT. (In the good sense) OH MY GOD. THEN! This Scott and Molly pair got up and played the SHIT out of "Rocks in My Pocket." THEN when the night couldn't POSSIBLY get better, Chuck, looking rather fuckin awkward without a bass slung around him, led us all through Lorraine. Also big highlights were The Walrus' cover of "Shut Up Singing About the End of the World" WHO THE HELL CARED it was the second time we'd heard the song that night. IT was just as fun (and he didn't edit it. Tongue)

Then it was time for the man of the hour Mr AWESOMEx5+ to get up there and show us how the hell it was done. Big Kids played through This House. Then his current outfit The Numbers played Adderall and Made It Through (I can't remember if there were more). Then Anthenaeum, another big NC band, got up and played, and played really really well, but I cannot remember at all what they played right now. At this point we were about 3 hours into the concert. Then Bus Stop reunited and holy Shit Evan Olson. Can you say STAGE PRESENCE? Well I just did, so there. The four of them (Snuzz, Chuck, Evan and Eddie) looked like they were having a blast for their four song set. I was thrilled to near-death when they played "You" (a favorite) AND they played "Waitin on the Bus" which has become a bit of a anthem for me as of late.

After that the show was done. We all cheered and hollered and loved each other. Despite some rather interesting individuals being there. The point was Snuzz. I did not, really, however, need to see someone flash me (both up and down)...... May have been a LoveFest, but I'm from the North, we're prudes. HAHAHA. Anyway. Hung out with Steve for a bit, briefly with Chuck (who I loled over his Harry Potter shirt). Talked to Robert Sledge. And he remembered me fangirling on him at the reunion. HAHAHAH. Awesome. Then went over and fangirled on Eddie Walker (and presumably his wife) and got him to sign my Big Bang Boom CD. Which was hilarious. He laughed, but I think it might have been awkward for him. And then we WAAAAAAAAAAAAITED for Snuzz. I mean, he WAS/IS the man of the hour (or 4), and he apparently didn't recognize us. Eventually we got tired of him running from other people to other people and I was like, SNUZZ. STOP! COME HERE! hahaha. And then he saw that it was Brooke and I. And, oh my god, his reaction. The hug I got will be forever imprinted in my memory (and perhaps even my body). Got him to sign our copies of the Carving Pumpkins EP and then told him to sign one for Mel, which he was poised and ready to do, when someone came and stole him. AGAIN. to do some interview. So we waited AGAIN. AND SOME MORE. And then he stole my sharpie and had to track him down again (The Blind Tiger is not very big, at all) to get him to do it. But each one was personalized and awesome, cause that's how Snuzz is. We eventually said goodbye and drove back to Durham where our hotel was. And slept, not until after watching a bit of Criminal Minds (<3). And went home. And felt warm and fuzzies.

    Previously: My top 200 tracks 1990-99 Pt.02b: 140 to 121

Part three of my tracks of the 90s rundown: again split over two posts. The next forty will be posted on Friday.

    120
    Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Sir Psycho Sexy
    BloodSugarSexMagik
    1991

You may be forgiven for forgetting, but once upon a time the Chili Peppers were a funk-rock party band, that made everything they did sound enormous fun, with the exception of the odd ballad. And aside from the singles, they seriously went "out there" at points - like this, one of the closing tracks from BloodSugarSexMagik. It's lengthy, filthy, funny, and funky as hell. In fact, it pretty much sums up everything that was great about them (except some of the questionable lyrics), and what they've lost since in becoming stadium-rock bores...

    119
    Cannibal Corpse
    TocarHammer Smashed Face
    Tomb of the Mutilated
    1992

It's ridiculous, over-the-top, and fucking rules. Yes, it's one of the greatest death metal tracks ever written (just check the opening, chugging riff and that bass solo!), a track that never fails to inspire metalheads to go batshit whenever it's aired in clubs (or at gigs). And, never mind anything else, this has to be the most unlikely song ever to feature in a Jim Carrey film.

    118
    Ben Folds Five
    TocarJackson Cannery
    Ben Folds Five
    1995

One of the first songs BFF released, and one of the first I heard (after the delicious dig at the alternative scene that was TocarUnderground), this track has a slightly more down-to-earth subject - dead end jobs and not doing a lot with your life. It's unashamedly retro - harking back to the piano-led rock of the likes of Billy Joel and Elton John from the seventies, but with a knowing post-modern nod in the delivery, not to mention Ben Folds' fantastic line in melodies and vicious sense of humour...

    117
    Longpigs
    TocarShe Said
    The Sun Is Often Out
    1996

Another band who had a brief time in the spotlight, this Sheffield-based band were where Richard Hawley first had success, amongst other things. Their second album sadly sank without trace (it was nowhere near as bad as some would make out), but their first album had some success, mainly thanks to a trio of great singles, of which this - the first, as I recall - was the pick. A slightly-sneering take on the fashion industry (I think that's the subject, it's been a long time!), Crispin Hunt's vocal, that guitar riff...ah, the memories...

    116
    Life of Agony
    River Runs Red
    River Runs Red
    1993

I've said before just how important Keith Caputo's voice was to this band - and this blinding, short-sharp-shock of a track is a perfect reason why. His soaring vocal elevates what would otherwise a brief hardcore blitz into a soulful, shimmering track that still sounds incredible nearly twenty years since it was first released.

    115
    Blur
    TocarFor Tomorrow
    Modern Life Is Rubbish
    1993

For me, this is Blur's greatest single by miles. Parklife may have gained all the plaudits as an album, but this wonderfully whimsical slice of early-90s London life is a spot-on character sketch, and probably the closest in style the band ever got to their beloved The Kinks, too.

    114
    Faith No More
    TocarAshes to Ashes
    Album of the Year
    1997

This album was FNM's last new material - and it's something of a miracle that they lasted this long, such were the internal tensions within the band. Perhaps all the more surprising was how good this last album was, too - aside from the likes of the Mr Bungle-esque chaos of Mouth to Mouth, it was played a little more straight than previous albums, but didn't suffer a bit as a result. All of the singles were marvellous, too, but the muscular crunch of this track remains my favourite (not to mention it being one of Mike Patton's best vocal performances ever, too).

    113
    Tori Amos
    TocarThe Waitress
    Under the Pink
    1994

By some considerable distance the most spiteful song Tori Amos ever wrote, if this was based on fact you have to wonder what exactly the titular character did to deserve this wrath. It starts out calmly, Tori's near-spoken first verse accompanied only by a piano, the lyrics only hinting at what is to come - when the chorus comes hurtling in out of nowhere, and that's the marvellous kiss-off: "I believe in peace...bitch". Yeah, right.

    112
    Stabbing Westward
    TocarNothing
    Ungod
    1994

One of the many, many bands to surface in the alt-rock explosion in the aftermath of grunge, this band took more of an influence from Nine Inch Nails and various earlier electronic bands, coming up with a vaguely chart friendly, anthemic take on the style, at least with the singles. Lyrically the band were unremittingly bleak, Christopher Hall wallowing in misery and self-hatred, although it worked well with his vocal delivery and the music - this was probably the most immediate track on the album (and I'd suspect is the song that got me into the band, although my memory is kinda hazy on this), and the reason it caught on is probably something to do with the stadium-sized chorus...

    111
    The Lemonheads
    TocarConfetti
    It's a Shame About Ray
    1992

Way back when, Evan Dando's band were the shit. Like, the band every alternative kid loved. And it was all down to this album (and, likely, Mrs Robinson). The whole album is summery, whimsical indie-rock, with no song overstaying it's welcome (the whole album - all thirteen songs - is done within half an hour), and it's still a fantastic listen even now. This track - a single in the UK, at least - is still my favourite, a joyous-sounding track with rather less happy vocals...

    110
    Snot
    TocarSnot
    Get Some
    1997

A sadly short-lived first incarnation of this band, after Lynn Strait's untimely death, but their only album with him at the helm was enormous fun. A blast of punk-metal, snarling attitude and the odd breather of lounge-like ambience, they were never a band to be taken too seriously (it was plainly obvious that the band never took themselves too seriously at this point, either). And this, their calling card and the opening track on the album, laid this out nice and clearly. It was party time, and we were all invited.

    109
    Deftones
    TocarEngine No. 9
    Adrenaline
    1995

The Deftones' first album had a highly unusual, dry production that made the whole album sound extraordinarily raw, burying Chino Moreno's vocals deep within the mix. Those few moments where he did break through - like his near-primal delivery in this - were matched by some of the most brutal music the band wrote. I'll never forget the band opening with this in London back in '98 or so. It hurt, but was utterly exhilarating.

    108
    Jeff Buckley
TocarLover, You Should Have Come Over
    Grace
    1994

It wasn't TocarHallelujah that was the true centrepiece of Grace, it was this. A glorious, slow-burn (it's seven minutes or so long) detailing his state of mind as a relationship ends, and as much as it's Buckley's rich voice that is important here, it's also the elegant, poetic lyrics that set the scene perfectly, conjuring up rainswept nights lost in a city, musing on what might have been. Not that this ever happened to me, either, right? Honest.

    107
    Slayer & Atari Teenage Riot
    No Remorse (I Wanna Die)
    Spawn OST
    1997

The film may have blown, but the soundtrack ruled. A very of-the-time set of collaborations between "electronica" and "metal" artists, whoever got Slayer and Atari Teenage Riot together to do this deserves a knighthood. Quite possibly more extreme than any material either band ever put out seperately, it's so loud and in-your-face that you can't help but submit. Shame they never did any more material together, really. Could you imagine how ace an entire album of this would have been?

    106
    Vision of Disorder
    Imprint
    Imprint
    1998

A band that never quite got the respect they deserved, in my view, merging viciously heavy hardcore with lighter elements and coming up with a couple of endlessly listenable albums at least - not least this one. Of which the title track is one of a number of highlights - impressively changing tempo for each verse and containing at least three awesome breakdowns, and being a great tune to boot, too.

    105
    The Jesus Lizard
    Mouth Breather
    Goat
    1991

David Yow's band always sounded like they were teetering on the edge of complete and utter chaos, and it also strikes me that Steve Albini's production techniques were the perfect fit for such a band: tight, taut, and they could be unrelentingly harsh. Mouth Breather isn't their harshest, but the glorious riff that heralds the track is worth it alone.

    104
    The Chemical Brothers
    TocarIn Dust We Trust
    Exit Planet Dust
    1995

The Chems: one of the few electronic acts to successfully write tracks like a rock band, and cross over in a big way. Certainly, that was how it was in the first place, and while TocarLeave Home got me interested, it was this track that followed it on their debut album that sealed the deal. It sounds bloody huge, and a fantastic, dirty bassline underpinning it that drives the whole track forward.

    103
    Pulp
    TocarJoyriders
    His 'n' Hers
    1994

It wasn't Different Class that got Pulp their big break after years toiling away on the indie circuit - it was the previous album, His'n'Hers, that got them the wider attention that then paved the way for the huge success that followed. And the opening track from that, Joyriders, is a marvellous sketch about rebellious youth with nothing much to do other than to nick cars for fun, one of those songs that is brilliant because you can picture every single lyrical detail (and, not to mention, it's an ace song generally). The real story behind the song is rather thinner (if no less amusing), though...

    102
    Sepultura
    Manifest
    Chaos A.D.
    1993

Five minutes of brutal metal fury, this track was built around (fake) newscast-style radio reports detailing the police brutality surrounding the Carandiru prison massacre (that eventually saw the police chief in charge acquitted), and was a staggering clarion call for justice. Other tracks on this album may also have had points to make on the state of Brazil and the wider world, but none made their point as forcefully - or brilliantly - as this.

    101
...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
    TocarMistakes & Regrets
    Madonna
    1999

Following the cacophonous, chaotic noise at the heart of their debut album, they somehow managed to fashion this into a more, er, indie mainstream appeal on their second album, without losing an iota of their visceral fury that seemed to drive everything they did. Leading the charge was this extraordinary track, a dramatic kiss-off to someone who really must have done something bad to deserve such a stripping down in the lyrics.

  • One fan's Ben Folds setlist request

    Nov 12 2009, 19h12 por HeyPetray

As some of you may have noticed, Ben Folds has moved up quickly in my charts. Here's an idea for the few Ben Folds fan/friends of mine. Build the live set list you would want Ben to perform...

    Here are the rules:
-You get up to 20 tracks, 3 of which make up an encore
-Bonus points if you consider the order and flow
-You don't have to explain your choices, but it may be fun
-You can edit it whenever you want
-You can choose songs originally performed by Ben Folds Five
-If you choose to play, post a link to your list journal in my comments below!

My ideal Ben Folds setlist (Version 2)
    01.TocarAnnie Waits
    02.TocarTrusted
    03.TocarFred Jones Part 2
    04.TocarAir
    05.TocarEmaline
    06.TocarPhilosophy
    07.TocarMess
    08.TocarLanded
    09.TocarZak and Sara
    10.TocarArmy
    11.TocarRock This Bitch
    12.TocarNot the Same
    13.TocarBrick
    14.TocarGone
    15.TocarThe Last Polka
    16.TocarLosing Lisa
    17.TocarThe Luckiest
    (Encore)
    18.TocarYou to Thank
    19.TocarSelfless, Cold, and Composed
    20.TocarNarcolepsy

My original list was 26 tracks. Here are the 6 I cut (It was a bit difficult):
    TocarJesusland
    TocarBastard
    TocarStill Fighting It
TocarOne Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces
You Don't Know Me (feat Regina Spektor)
    TocarDr. Yang

I'm still not 100% on the order. I'm going to make a new playlist to try it out and adjust as necessary. It may change next time you drop by!

  • Song lyric poem

    Nov 4 2009, 3h02 por YourGetawayCar

    This should be interesting...

Select 20 songs at random; take line 1 from the first line of song 1, line 2 from the second line of song 2, etc. (If a song had too few lines, I started counting again from the beginning.)

    2. Within Temptation- The Howling
    3. Ben Folds Five- TocarFair
    4. The Beatles- Act Naturally

    6. Regina Spektor- TocarUs
    7. As Tall as Lions- Stab City
    8. Feist- Tout Doucement
    9. Keane- TocarA Bad Dream
    10. Beck- TocarLost Cause

    19. The Post Service- TocarRecycled Air
    20. Joshua Radin- TocarAmy's Song

    Am I too contagious?
    Got us cornered right now
And she shattered her last china plate
And all I gotta do is act naturally.
We once walked out on the beach
They'll name a city after us
    I've been so tired
    La vie je la comprends
Guess I'm not the fighting kind.

They know your secrets, and you know theirs
I was miles from dry land, but you gave everything you had
    Now I can't change
To keep you warm from the storm
But in time things must change
    Lucy, Lucy my gal
But I couldn't talk about it

You will die when I say you must die
And tonight I thank the stars
    Calm down, release your cares
    Show me something.
