50 Foot Wave - Power+Light
Mar 9 2009, 19h17 por JeroenKlomp
from 50 Foot Wave's Cash Music site:
“Power and Light” was something we’d seen written on the side of a van once on a 50 Foot Wave tour. Like many eloquent things we see written on the sides of vans, it turned up in a song a few months later. A song which stretched out in both directions, greedily snatching at parts of any other songs it could find and stuffing them down its throat. It seemed never to be satisfied with the beginnings and endings I handed it, always eager for more movements, until “Power and Light” was an epic, half-hour piece of piled up pieces. That poor van has no idea what it wrought just by driving down the highway.
When I played the screechy results by myself, cramming them into demo form and sending them off to my bandmates, now scattered across the U.S. (I so wished we were still an LA band so that I could have apologetically invited them to the practice space for an afternoon of gentle thrashing and warm beer), they may have blanched, but they did not let on. They are superheroes, after all.
I saw Rob in California soon afterwards and asked him if it was even possible to learn a half-hour long song. He grinned and said sweetly, “I already did!” Of course.
We recorded this interesting monster with Mudrock, who is starting to seem a little masochistic in his continued willingness to donate his time to work with noisy, broke 50 Foot Wave. He even gave us the apartment upstairs to live in during the session, ensuring that we would eat, sleep and breathe Power+Light for the duration.
He also gave us Victor Lawrence, a dear creature who plays achingly beautiful cello. Victor’s parts make these gritty songs heartbreaking, for which I am forever indebted.
The first thing you notice when you enter Mudrock’s Highland Park studio in Los Angeles is a mannequin head wearing a surgical mask with wires coming out of the back of its scalp. I found it wildly off-putting and wondered (privately) if Mud wasn’t actually a little sado-masochistic after all.
“Her name is Beatrice,” said Mud, “she’s a mike. You’re gonna love her.”
“I will not love that,” I answered, stepping away from it, but unable to tear my eyes away from its dead stare.
“You will,” he said. “Trust me.”
I didn’t trust Mud then, but I trust him now, because I do love Beatrice. She is an amazing microphone and her unblinking calm saw me through many a gut-wrenching vocal. I sang to her, mostly, and she took it gracefully. She didn’t seem to mind the screaming or even the endless leads I played, Mud crawling around on the floor, pressing his hands into foot pedals chosen from his sleek, enviable and totally indecipherable collection of Japanese guitar effects.
Beatrice didn’t flinch when Bernie’s bass cab shook the building, or when Rob’s godless pounding almost flattened it. She merely accepted the sounds and laid them down, adding her own personal tweak: a bizarre combination of transistor and room. She looks like she may have seen a coupla hard days, too, which adds to her depth, makes her expression seem serene rather than blank.
Or maybe I’m projecting. ‘Cause Mud was right; Beatrice is lovely. Which is why she graces the cover of Power+Light, brilliantly photographed by L. Fletcher and artfully coalesced into an LP sleeve by David Narcizo.
We did eat, sleep and breathe Power+Light or we would have if we’d taken time away from playing to do things like eat, sleep and breathe. It seemed more important to serve this greedy, forever-long song and give it the world it had asked us for when its van whizzed past ours on the highway so many tours ago.
Love,
Kristin

השירים שהכי אהבתי ב-2008
Jan 24 2009, 21h11 por lidermanrony
1. Counting Crows – Hanging Tree
2. Drive-By Truckers –
Daddy Needs A Drink
3. Counting Crows– 1492
4.Belly– Sweet Ride
5.EatLiz– whore
6.שלומי סרנגה– האמנם (את תלכי בשדה)
7. Big Star–
The Ballad Of El Goodo
8. Velvet Revolver – Can't Get It Out of My Head
9. Pearl Jam–
Off He Goes
10. Big Star–
Thirteen

Counting Crows - Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings

Daddy Needs A Drink
Puttin' People on the Moon

Tuesday Ten: Side-Projects
Nov 18 2008, 19h18 por amodelofcontrol
For this week's Tuesday Ten, I'm turning my attention to the side-project, an often-maligned pasttime for many artists. For the avoidance of doubt, here is what Wiki has to say about what a side-project is:
A side project is a project undertaken by one or more persons already known for their involvement in another band. It can also be an artist or a band temporarily switching to a different style.
Usually these projects emphasize a different aspect of that person's or that band's musical interests that they feel they cannot explore within the boundaries established by their main project. Side projects can later become full-time endeavours, but shouldn't be confused with quitting a band for a solo career or another band.
So with that tidied up, I have no doubt that some of the bands/artists I include will be disputed as to whether they were side-projects or not. Feel free to argue your case or add others...
A Perfect Circle
a project involving Billy Howerdel, and Maynard James Keenan of Tool
Probably one of the biggest success stories in recent years in terms of a side-project, APC flickered brightly for a short while, almost filling in time between Tool albums from 2000 to about 2004. They only released two albums (as well as a covers album), the first album Mer De Noms being a near-perfect alt-rock album that had accessibility, power and above all some cracking songs, notable for in the main being an awful lot less cryptic than Keenan's work in Tool.
Keenan has also released work under the name Puscifer, too, which was an even more radical departure from his work in Tool.
The Breeders
initially a side project of Kim Deal of Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses
This band began as a side-project (borne of Kim Deal's frustration of not being able to contribute much in the way of writing to the Pixies' output), and has since the dissolution of the Pixies became the "main band", albeit with very different personnel along the way, and release schedule that could be termed, er, "erratic". And even wierder, side-projects have spawned from this (in the form of The Amps) too, while Tanya Donnelly went on to form her own band in Belly.
Revolting Cocks
a long-term side project involving Al Jourgensen from Ministry, and initially Richard 23 from Front 242
The sleazy, beer-swilling and often downright filthy younger sibling to the raging and highly political Ministry, this was always the outlet that Jourgensen seemed to use for his more light-hearted side, often involving god-only-knows how many members of other bands in the industrial scene to help him out along the way. The sound of a party I'm not sure I'd ever want to attend, probably their best known tracks include the delightfully titled Beers, Steers and Queers and the cover of
Do Ya Think I'm Sexy that is just plain wrong.
Grinderman
side-project involving Nick Cave from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
The release of the one Grinderman album so far last year seemed to herald something of a critical comeback for Nick Cave, with a more primal, "old school" sound that reached a long way back into his career, perhaps even as far back as The Birthday Party, and frankly was the best thing he'd done in years. Indeed, it clearly struck a chord, as the latest Nick Cave album (DIG, LAZARUS, DIG!!!) was at least in parts almost as chaotic and (whisper it) fun.
Memmaker
project involving Yann Faussurier from Iszoloscope
Talking of fun, tracks from this act's album How to Enlist in a Robot Uprising have been industrial dancefloor sensations this year, and with good reason - a light-hearted concept album of stomping dancefloor industrial that has a vague robot theme without getting too bogged down in it, and is a world away from the intricately constructed soundscapes that Yann has specialised in with his main project Iszoloscope.
Amanda Palmer
a side project of Amanda Palmer from The Dresden Dolls
Perhaps debatable that this is a side-project, but I see it as one - the album Who Killed Amanda Palmer has been released in the down-time between DD albums, and is also something of a departure from the parent band's work. In the main, this is a collection of songs that thematically wouldn't work as DD songs, but as a collection here work very well indeed, but are still clearly the work of Amanda Palmer. In fact, in some respects this is vastly superior to DD material, and in a just world would make Palmer a star - but for now I think she's going to remain an underground star.
Ziltoid The Omniscient
one of the many side projects of Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad)
Often trying to work out what is Townsend's main project is difficult enough, particularly with the finishing off of SYL recently. SYL were, perhaps, his main outlet, but there have been vast numbers of other releases under various different names, of which this is the latest, and probably the strangest, being a concept album about (if I'm getting this right) an alien searching for the perfect coffee. One thing you can say about Townsend: he never takes things too seriously...
Emigrate
side-project of Richard Kruspe from Rammstein
In the now-long period since the last new Rammstein material, some of the members of the band have been involved in other things - the most high-profile being Richard Kruspe's Emigrate project. To be honest, though, musically it doesn't sound all that different to the "parent" band - the guitars sound the same, the huge, pounding beats are there, it's just not quite as interesting, really. Still, the wait for new Rammstein material may soon be over - the band's wiki page reports that the new album is finally nearing completion.
C-Tec
a project involving Jean-Luc De Meyer from Front 242 and Marc Heal from Cubanate, amongst others
Another industrial project that had a number of different people involved along the course of the band's existence, I only really came to the band with their last release Cut, which appeared to my ears to be a pretty much perfect balance between the influences of 242 and Cubanate - and I always saw it as a shame that there wasn't more material released subsequent to that.
Combichrist
initially a side-project of Andy La Plegua of Icon of Coil
While the roles seem to have reversed now, with Icon of Coil being a live-only proposition from what we can tell right now, and Combichrist as the main vehicle for La Plegua's work, in the beginning Combichrist was a "powernoise" project and came to promience doing remixes. The first Combichrist album appeared while IoC were still current, but IoC appeared to be sidelined once Combichrist gained some serious success in the industrial scene. Combichrist is only one of a number of projects that have sprung up from IoC - in addition there are Panzer AG and Scandy (also La Plegua projects), then also NorthBorne, Zombie Girl and Moonitor!

25 To Look Out For September - October 2008
Out 8 2008, 18h45 por earlofsuave
Been away a while what with no internet, lots of gigs and buying a house etc...but back with another brilliant selection of all sorts for you to check out....
In alphabetical order......
01 Bombay Bicycle Club - Evening, Morning
Welcome to return to a live favourite of mine, this time back a lot rockier than before and without a doubt back on my ' Earls ' playlist.
02 Cajun Dance Party - Colourful Life
These guys just can't go wrong in my book. Top class title track off the amazing album ' The Colourful Life '....
03 Chris Lake Feat. Nastala - Start Again (Dub Mix)
Sounds like Underworld at their housiest, rolls only beautifully with plenty of wiggling olong the way.
04 CSS - Left Behind
Really wish I'd seen these guys again at Glasto this year instead of Shit-Z as the new album ' Donkey ' rocks and this track is my highlight...
05 Deadmau5 - Slip
The electro / house king comes along with an album no less called ' Random Album Title '. This tunes has elements of ' Moaner ' mixed with the ' Washmachine ' tune. Relentless yet dreamy.
06 EA Choir - Oh No You Didn't
Not sure what to say about this tune. Is has gangster rap lyrics but sounds like it should come from The Bugsy Malone soundtrack or Barber Shop Quartet. If you can imagine that :) It's great listen to it !
07 Friendly Fires - On Board
They started off on Channel 4's ' Transmission ' late 2007 and now there's no stopping them and not really surprising as this new single sounds like they've been partying with Soulwax and Kylie.
08 Johnny Foreigner - DJ's Get Doubts
Sounds like Pavement crossed with Idlewild with a female singer. Need I say more ? Everything they've done so far I've loved. This is the most recent offering !
09 Justice - Planisphere 1
They're here again with a 4 track EP and they haven't held back one little bit. This is the longest and danciest of the 4 which is why I like it the most.
10 Kings of Leon- Notion
Wow what a new album ! I'm sure I don't need to tell you about it ! this is my favourite. Sex On Fire still sounds amazing even after hearing it 200 times.
11Ladytron - Runaway ( Stray Dogs In Paris Remix )
Lovely funky ' Air-esque ' remix. Soooo much better than the original ( which is wicked by the way )
12 Linkin Park vs. Jay-Z - Numb ( Dark Skies Remix )
Rock & Breaks ?? Prodigy didn't do very well & Pendulum make it sound chartey and poppy! This though has me jumpin like a looney and turning my stereo up till the neighbours' ears are bleedin'. Smashin'
13 Oasis - Falling Down ( Chemical Brothers Remix )
Back to the ' Surrender ' days with this filthy remix.
14 Plump DJs - Rocket Soul ( 12 Mix )
12" Dj friendly version of the best track of Plumps latest filthy bass heavy album ' Headthrash '. Very old School samples, very hands in the air and screaming ! Makes me smile just thinking about playing this little beauty out !!!!
15 Prodigy - Everybody In The Place ( Deadmau5 Mix )
More old school but this time brought up to date with a Deadmau5 remix! He hasn't failed yet !! Superb acid driven electro with all the best bits from the original and lots of new stuff for good measure !
16 Royal Treatment Plant - Undercurrent
Based in London, this is their most recent release, with elements of Pixies, Belly, Deborah Harry ( Blondie ) and Kings of Leon they can't really go wrong !
17 Sam Isaac - Sticker, Star And Tape
This guy has graced Cornwall on several occasions now, mostly acoustically, and recently with a superb full band. He seems to be touring constantly and gets better and better every time I see him. You won't regret seeing him live, ever !!
18 Spooky - Candy (Original Version)
This progressive breaks tune has ' Orbital - Insides and Middle of Nowhere ' written all over it. Awesome !
19 Stanton Warriors - Seeker (What What What Remix)
Best building vocal breaks tune I have ever heard! If you're not dancing by the time this drops there really is something wrong with you :)
20 The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight
A friend has booked these guys for a gig locally and so I thought I'd give em a listen. I was not disappointed. When I listen to them, I can only imagine how totally mind blowing their live show is going to be ! Arcade Fire, Razorlight, Kings of Leon. The self titled album is brilliant !
21 The Kabeedies - King Canute
Coming from Norwich / Woodbridge they have a very infectious and cheeky indie pop feel to them! It makes you wanna do some rock n' roll dancing !
22 The Rapture - No Sex For Ben
With uplifting hip hop beats and cow bells covered in filthy Rapture rhythms I bloody glad the Rapture are back ! Excellent !!
23 The Sea and Cake - Fuller Moon
Belle & Sebastian esque fluffy feeling smashingness.
24 The Soundtrack of Our Lives - Utopia
At first I thought I was gonna be treated with a ' Rolling Stones ' cover then they really surprised me with this ! Sounds a lot like Jane's Addiction at their floatiest, slowly becoming the Pixies at their rockiest !
25 The Whip - Trash
Probably needs no introduction !! Big big big rocking indie / dance tunes ! First track of the superb album ' X Marks Destination '. This never fails at indie or electro nights ! A tune Soulwax wish they'd written.
Hope you enjoy !!! Till next time

Artists I have seen live
Jul 5 2008, 22h52 por Jopageri
This list is mainly for me. A record of over 20 years of gig and festival going.
First ever gig: The Cult at Wembley Arena in 1987, followed some months later by Cardiacs in Maidstone Kent Hall in June 1988. The first a large scale stadium gig; the second a small sweaty affair with from memory about 75 people. Cardiacs were superb but the gig was interrupted by a fire alarm half way through. I remember huddling on a fire escape while the building was checked before we could go back in and the gig resumed. Still one of the best gigs I have been to.
Most recent: Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara in Bath June 2009.
Best gigs: stand outs include Pixies, Leonard Cohen, Paul McCartney, The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev on a double bill, Cardiacs at Maidstone in 1988 and at The Thekla in Bristol twenty years later, and of course The Fall (every single gig!).
Worst gig: Meat Loaf in 2008. Open air gig, terrible sound, Meat Loaf seemed to be stumbling over the words and was out of tune. And it rained.
Most embarrassing: for the first time ever, I forgot I had tickets to a gig. Gutted. Half Man Half Biscuit in Bath August 2009. and it seems it was a cracking show. http://www.last.fm/event/998380+Half+Man+Half+Biscuit+at+Komedia+on+6+August+2009/reviews . Arse.
Anyway, these are the ones I can remember. I haven't included support artists unlesss I specifically wanted to see them. I am sure there are more but my memory isn't what it once was...(see above for evidence!)
