I don't care about the meaning. I mean, the meaning is important, but the music is of more significance.

Probably my favourite B&S song. Looking at the comments here, I'd like to say that I disagree with the war verse not fitting in. Seeing as this song isn't about love or war, it's about God, I do believe it fits in nicely. Also, regarding the love perspective, not all of it is directed at loving another person, it can actually be taken by your love for other things as well I think. Anyway, an awesome song, just marvelous.

If you're going off to war, then I wish you well, but don't be sore if I cheer the other team

llamagesicht (Nina) : Stuart says if you "find yourself out of love" and are so sad that you decide to go to war, he won't support you... then he gets incredibly sidetracked and says how he doesn't approve of war blah blah, nothing at all to do with being caught in love, not really. Also, I think the meaning of this song is silly: that you can only be happy when you're in love. I think Stuart probably thought he was "in love" while writing this song, just a thought.

I'm not really fond of Dear Catastrophe Waitress, but this song is simply outstanding. :)

I love the way this song sounds; a song with so many religious references set to any other tune would not be my cup of tea. The ending seems to be about civilian deaths in war. I don't see why Stuart would write a song saying that he will "cheer" the countries his goes to war with; rather, he seems to be pitying the innocent lives that are taken. That's my take on it, and from this stance I love the ending.

It's true, I did smile like a mofo the first time I heard this. And I still do.

Great song. And to think my whole kick of listening to too much Belle and Sebastian music (which eventually led to this song, which is probably my favorite of any of theirs now) started when I accidentally played "Mary Jo" one day...

The soldier/war thing is the best part of the song. The god stuff I can do without, but the last verse makes up for it.
